Northampton Gilbert & Sullivan Group are delighted to be returning to the Royal stage with their latest production, The Yeomen Of The Guard. Under the shadow of the Tower Of London in the 16th Century, the story centres on Colonel Fairfax, a gentleman, soldier and scientist, who has been condemned to death on a false charge of sorcery by his jealous cousin. Fate, however, steps in – in the form of Sergeant Meryll, who owes his life to Colonel Fairfax, and

Elsie Maynard, a beautiful strolling singer who has just arrived at the Tower to entertain the people in the company of a jester, Jack Point. In order to hide his true identity, Fairfax takes his place among the yeomen of the guard, but his apparent departure throws the whole tower into confusion. In this Gilbert & Sullivan favourite, joy, despair, love and sacrifice play their role. Will Fairfax be reprieved? There is only one way to find out.

MADE IN NORTHAMPTON SPRING AND SUMMER 2016

Northampton has always been known for its exports and so it was thrilling, in October, to learn that our theatre productions had been recognised nationwide, with Royal & Derngate winning the 2015 UK Theatre Award for Touring Theatre. Over the previous twelve months, six Made In Northampton productions had toured to 45 venues across 30 towns and cities, playing to 197,000 people. Our new season is equally ambitious, bringing artists from across the world to Northampton and touring to dozens of theatres. We mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with four major productions, one for each century. Set during the final months of Shakespeare’s life, characters in Peter Whelan’s acclaimed play The Herbal Bed include his granddaughter Elizabeth who lived in Northampton. Philip Franks’ production of King Lear follows in April starring Michael Pennington, alongside a cast of fourteen distinguished actors. Spymonkey then collaborate with Tim Crouch to stage all of Shakespeare’s death scenes in their hilarious The Complete Deaths. Finally, Shakespeare’s late play The Tempest in a new version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, will be performed by the most promising 18-25 year old actors from across Northamptonshire and beyond. Alongside this Shakespearean festival are two world premieres. In May, celebrated comedians Peepolykus lovingly derail the epic story of Madame Bovary and later that month a new play by Roy Williams, Soul tells the tragic story of the legendary Marvin Gaye. During July, our Actors Company, Youth Theatre and Young Company will stage David Eldridge’s Market Boy, Patrick Marber’s The Musicians and Lionel Bart’s Oliver! and in September we revive our acclaimed 2014 production of A Tale Of Two Cities ahead of a major national tour. We look forward to welcoming you to Royal & Derngate this season.

A festive and funny, frozen adventure. For Christmas in the Royal this year, we are delighted to be staging an enchanting and funny new version of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, The Snow Queen. Featuring memorable new songs and hilarious characters, this mischievous retelling of a timeless story will melt your heart. In a frozen land far away, a Snow Queen kidnaps a young boy named Kai. His best friend Gerda, a stumpy, grumpy, determined little girl is the unlikely hero who sets out to rescue him. On the way, she finds friends who will help her, and discovers the truth behind the mysterious Snow Queen’s identity and why she lives locked up in solitude in her icy palace. This festive production is written by Emmy-Award-winning comedy writer Georgia Pritchett (Miranda, The Thick Of It, Veep and Wallace And Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit), and features original songs by Dougal Irvine. It is directed by Gary Sefton, who won audience’s hearts at Royal & Derngate with his productions of A Christmas Carol and The Wind In The Willows. “GEORGIA PRITCHETT’S SCRIPT WEAVES THE STORIES OF OTHER FAMILIAR FAIRY-TALE CHARACTERS INTO LESSONS ABOUT FRIENDSHIP, LOYALTY, TRUST AND THE POWER OF HUGS… WITH SOME TRULY MAGICAL TOUCHES” THE STAGE #SnowQueen

Join Sam and a hilarious duo playing a host of snow creatures as he ventures inside a brand new world, and asks if a white Christmas really is the best kind of Christmas after all. “I have always wanted that which I cannot have.” When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour, her husband chooses to stand by her, suing her accuser for slander. In doing so, their lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny in this emotional thriller, based upon real events from Stratfordupon-Avon in the summer of 1613.

A powerful exposé of the contradiction between human desire and social convention which seeks to repress it, Peter Whelan’s moving and uplifting play provides a beautiful evocation of life in Shakespearian England. This is the first major revival since the play’s acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company premiere in 1994, which transferred to the West End and Broadway. The Herbal Bed is directed by Artistic Director James Dacre and designed by Jonathan Fensom (King John) whose production of Peter Whelan’s The Accrington Pals in 2013 led to great critical acclaim for a “profoundly moving production” (The Guardian) and won the UK Theatre Award for Best Design. “MARVELLOUS, TENDER, WISE AND GENEROUS OF SPIRIT… A REMARKABLY PERSUASIVE AND TOUCHING PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY IN CRISIS” DAILY TELEGRAPH ON THE HERBAL BED #HerbalBed

“You had better tell me what I just walked into.” On April Fool’s Day 1984, hours before his 45th birthday, Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father in the shared family home they called the ‘Big House.’ What happened there – and whether it was murder or suicide – has been shrouded in mystery since. In charting the untold truths about what happened during Marvin Gaye’s haunting final days, Soul is a parable about an American family prepared to do anything to promote and protect their children. Not just the story of Marvin Gaye, but of many a musical icon whose family life has been crushed by the effects of their stardom – a searing portrait of the pitfalls of the American dream. Our fourth tribute to William Shakespeare is his last masterpiece The Tempest, in a vibrant new version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Oscar and BAFTA winning Ida; Her Naked Skin, National Theatre). Set on a remote island of villains, lovers, fools and outcasts, The Tempest is a tale of enlightenment and forgiveness. Conjuring up a supernatural world of sorcery, savagery, shipwrecks and chivalry, Shakespeare’s late play is the bard at his most mystical and audacious. Shakespeare’s magical story of growing up and growing old will be performed by the next generation of talent – an ensemble of 18-25 year olds that brings together the most promising young actors from the UK and Northamptonshire. The production is a unique collaboration with the National Youth Theatre, whose renowned alumni rank amongst Britain’s greatest actors including Northampton’s Matt Smith, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Helen Mirren and Daniel Day Lewis. TRANSACTION CHARGES

It is still possible to avoid the transaction charge, with many paying no charge at all, including:

The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to charge a ‘per booking’ charge, not ‘per ticket’, which makes our charges lower than many other theatres. We will continue to tell you about these charges, whether you are booking online, over the phone or at the counter.

• Members of our Friends, Gold and Artistic Director’s schemes • Anyone booking eight or more tickets for a single performance as part of a Group Booking • Customers whose transaction totals £15 or less • Subscribers – on their bookings for Made In Northampton and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra seasons • Disabled Patrons

For more information about our charges visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk

As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate.

GIFT VOUCHERS Gift Vouchers for Royal & Derngate and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse are available to buy from the Box Office in any denomination. We also sell National Theatre Tokens.

CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that we are unable to refund or exchange tickets. For sold-out shows only, we will accept returned tickets for re-sale, providing a gift voucher for the full amount in return. Please note: Information is correct at the time of going to press. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. Every effort will be made to advertise changes in the local press. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.

Royal Auditorium Boxes in the Royal Auditorium are sold subject to technical requirements and may not be available for purchase.
