With the recession biting hard, Emily and Oliver have decided to downsize and shift their middle‑class London lifestyle to a small town in the north of England. One night they open their doors and invite next door neighbours, Dawn and Alan, into their home. Over the course of a disastrous evening of olives, anchovies, Karl Marx and abstract art, class and culture collide with consequences as tragic as they are hilarious.

Written by one of the most entertaining observational comedy playwrights to emerge since Alan Ayckbourn, Torben Betts, and produced by the award-winning Original Theatre Company, don’t miss this acclaimed production of the smash hit comedy, Invincible. MON 6 – SAT 11 NOVEMBER

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). MADE IN NORTHAMPTON

Our Made In Northampton seasons always aim to present plays that powerfully question the most important issues of our time. 2016 has been a year of seismic social and political change and I’m sure that 2017 will continue to present equal challenges. With a mixture of classic plays, new commissions, literary adaptations and devised productions, our new season reflects this age of shock elections, referenda and revolutions. The Grapes of Wrath, An Iliad, The Blue Road and A Passage to India are a series of new play commissions and literary adaptations which offer life affirming tales of characters who show heroism, humanity and the power of hope on their journey to find a place where they belong. Their stories explore globalisation and identity in the modern and ancient worlds. Death Of A Salesman, Education, Education, Education, Rules For Living and Love From A Stranger show in either tragic, hilarious or provocative ways, how we develop strategies for dealing with a changing world. As plays they help us understand the worker who feels abandoned by his country, the generation who feel out of touch with politics, and the households who have forgotten how to be families. All explore our need to belong in both good times and bad. The Twelfth Player brings to the season a new type of collaboration, between a theatre, an art gallery and a football club, using interactive technology to portray the experience of Cobblers’ fans set across seventy years of the club’s extraordinary history. In creating these productions, we are welcoming some of the country’s finest writers, composers, actors and creatives to Northampton and we are taking work Made In Northampton to dozens of theatres nationwide, championing the brightest emerging artists and companies alongside the most celebrated. It’s as ambitious a season as we have ever produced, held together by a belief that the art of storytelling is as important a way of making sense of our lives today in the internet age as it was for the ancient Greeks.

Artistic Director James Dacre collaborates again with acclaimed composer Orlando Gough (King John) on Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare’s bold new adaptation of Homer’s chronicle. Winner of America’s prestigious Obie Award, this European premiere of An Iliad blends ancient mythology with the myths of our own age and spins a tale of gods and goddesses, undying love and endless battles relayed through the prism of our time. Casting the Poet as a refugee evicted from his country, his poem is an account of humanity’s addiction to violence, retribution and chaos. It offers an exciting new approach to storytelling which poses the question: has anything really changed since the Trojan War?

WORLD PREMIERE ADD-ON A co-production with Fermynwoods Contemporary Art & Seven Sisters Group

01604 624811 www.royalandderngate.co.uk

2015/16 was arguably the most dramatic and euphoric season in the Cobblers’ long and colourful history. In the dark days of November, the club was deep in trouble. Staff and players weren’t getting paid, and Administration was a very real possibility. But through the dedication of their extraordinary fans – the team’s twelfth player – they made an amazing recovery, welcoming a remarkable takeover and bouncing back into League One and winning the Club’s first League title for 29 years. The Twelfth Player is a unique collaboration between Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, Royal & Derngate and Northampton Town Football Club. Audiences will get a special opportunity to go behind the scenes on a 45 minute walking tour around Sixfields Stadium itself and through the past seventy years of the club’s history, viewing the passionate world of football through the eyes of three generations of a family of Cobblers supporters. Taking place in the real world and on screen, this audio-visual performance devised by Seven Sisters Group blends site-specific performance and handheld video technology, moving the audience seamlessly between brilliantly observed characters and placing them right in the heart of the action. #12thplayer This tour may not be suitable for patrons with accessibility requirements

Rules are broken, lies are told and secrets exposed. Everyone creates their own rules for living. But what happens when an extended family gathers in the kitchen for a traditional Christmas and each of them rigidly follows those rules? In Sam Holcroft’s hilarious comedy, the rules acquire a life of their own. There becomes no place to hide as long-held rivalries and resentments rise to the surface, accusations fly, and relationships fall apart. Royal & Derngate welcomes back former Associate Director, the Evening Standard Award-winning Simon Godwin (Regeneration) to direct this brilliant and darkly funny play, in collaboration with the producing team with whom we recently won the 2016 UK Theatre Award for Best Touring Production for The Herbal Bed. “INGENIOUS AND INSIGHTFUL” THE TIMES

It’s 1997 and it’s the last week of term at the local secondary school. Miss Haines has lost the mock exam papers, the Year 11s have put a Renault 5 on the school roof and the video player has broken. Things can only get better. Education, Education, Education asks big questions about a country in special measures. It explores power, responsibility, and change through the eyes of a hapless group of schoolteachers trying to make it through the day. The show is devised by The Wardrobe Ensemble, who won huge critical acclaim with their 2015 production of 1972: The Future Of Sex at the Edinburgh Fringe. Directed by Royal & Derngate’s former RYTDS Director In Residence Jesse Jones, they use their trademark inventive theatricality and irreverent humour to explore the stories that have shaped our recent political history, and what the future might look like. TRANSACTION CHARGES The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. We charge a ‘per booking’ charge, not ‘per ticket’, which makes our charges lower than many other theatres. Don’t forget, you don’t pay this charge if you are a member of our Friends, Gold or Artistic Director’s schemes; if you book eight or more tickets for a single performance as part of a Group Booking; if your transaction is less than £15; if you are booking a subscription for Made In Northampton or Royal Philharmonic Orchestra seasons, or if you are a Disabled Patron.
