TIME OUT ON JAMES I

“LAURIE SANSOM’S GRIPPING PRODUCTION”

The James Plays, directed by Royal & Derngate’s former Artistic Director Laurie Sansom, opened in 2014 to enormous public and critical acclaim. Written by acclaimed playwright Rona Munro, James I, II and III are a trilogy of history plays for contemporary audiences that bring to dramatic life three generations of Stewart Kings who ruled Scotland in the 15th century. From the National Theatre, who brought us last year’s sell-out The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time comes this remarkable co‑production originated by the National Theatre of Scotland and Edinburgh International Festival.

SAT 16 & SUN 17 APRIL James I: The Key Will Keep The Lock – Sat & Sun 11am James II: Day Of The Innocents – Sat & Sun 3pm James III: The True Mirror – Sat & Sun 7.30pm THREE SHOW PACKAGE £42, £60 & £78 INDIVIDUAL SHOW £24, £27 & £36 DERNGATE

Each play stands alone in its own right, but viewed together they form a very special, truly epic piece of theatre created by an ensemble of 20 actors, including Blythe Duff (Taggart), Steven Miller (Casualty) and Peter Forbes (Travels With My Aunt and Diary Of A Nobody at Royal & Derngate). These are very much plays for today, by turns moving, thought-provoking and laugh-out-loud funny. The language is contemporary, the action fast-moving and the narrative compelling and urgent. Gripping writing, royal power battles and a world-class cast make this event-theatre as addictive as any television box set. Please note, these performances contain strong language, violent scenes, nudity and are not suitable for children.

PRESENTED BY DEAD SHEEP LIMITED IN COLLABORATION WITH CAHOOTS THEATRE COMPANY

Graham Seed

Steve Nallon

In 1989 the seemingly invincible Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sacked Geoffrey Howe, her Foreign Secretary. She apparently had nothing to fear from him; his speaking skills had, famously, been compared to those of a dead sheep. However, a year later, inspired by his wife Elspeth’s notoriously frosty relationship with Thatcher, Howe overcame his limitations to destroy his one time friend and political soul mate with one of history’s great political speeches.

Dead Sheep, which opened in London to huge critical acclaim last year, tells this true story in a drama tinged with tragedy and comedy. Starring the extraordinary Spitting Image legend Steve Nallon as Margaret Thatcher and Graham Seed (Nigel Pargetter in The Archers) as Ian Gow, its themes – loyalty, love, political morality and Britishness – are as relevant today as they were a quarter of a century ago. “ENTERTAINING… WITTY… FASCINATING” THE TIMES

It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest

MADE IN NORTHAMPTON SPRING AND SUMMER 2016

In 2015 our Made In Northampton season won the UK Theatre Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre and Royal & Derngate was recognised as one of three UK venues in the Regional Theatre of the Year category of The Stage Annual Awards. Over the coming months we will continue to develop this reputation with our next seven productions touring to over 40 theatres across Britain. Our 2016 Made In Northampton season takes off with a festival to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Following an acclaimed run in Northampton, Peter Whelan’s play, The Herbal Bed currently tours the country. Michael Pennington, who this month received his fourth Olivier Award nomination, heads a distinguished company in Max Webster’s production of King Lear, and then Tim Crouch collaborates with anarchic Northampton favourites Spymonkey to mischievously stage all of Shakespeare’s death scenes in The Complete Deaths. Rounding off our Shakespeare celebrations, Oscar-winning writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz and director Caroline Steinbeis stage Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest, with a company composed of the best 18‑25 year-old acting talent from across Northamptonshire and beyond. We will also celebrate Shakespeare’s legacy with a wide range of other community events and a day of activities across Northampton on Saturday 23 April, the anniversary itself. We then welcome internationally acclaimed ensemble company Peepolykus back to the Royal with their hilarious take on Gustave Flaubert’s novel The Massive Tragedy Of Madame Bovary! The season ends with two projects that have been many years in the making. Roy Williams’ extraordinary new play Soul about the life and death of the musical legend Marvin Gaye will feature the Royal & Derngate Community Choir, while our celebrated 2014 production of A Tale Of Two Cities, written by Mike Poulton with original music by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman will return. At Christmas, the magical tale of Peter And The Starcatcher will receive its European premiere on the Royal stage. A huge hit on Broadway in 2012, it won five Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Award for its glorious music, going on to become one of the most produced plays in America last year. We look forward to welcoming you to Royal & Derngate this season. James Dacre Artistic Director

There are 75 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare: from the Roman suicides in Julius Caesar to the death fall of Prince Arthur in King John; from the carnage at the end of Hamlet to snakes in a basket in Antony And Cleopatra. And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus. 2016 ADD-ON A co-production with Spymonkey and Brighton Festival Adaptor & Director Tim Crouch Spymonkey Aitor Basauri, Stephan Kreiss, Petra Massey and Toby Park Designer Lucy Bradridge Lighting Phil Supple Original music Toby Park CONCESSIONS FRIENDS & MEMBERS POST SHOW TALK

For their fifth outing at Royal & Derngate, Spymonkey (Every Last Trick, Cooped, Oedipussy, Moby Dick) will perform them all – sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically, always hysterically. These four “seriously, outrageously, cleverly funny clowns” (Time Magazine) will scale the peaks of sublime poetry, and plumb the depths of darkest depravity. It may even be the death of them. Adapted and directed by Tim Crouch (The Author, Adler & Gibb Royal Court), The Complete Deaths will be a solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the perfect counterpoint to our production of King Lear. For your viewing pleasure, Peepolykus (Spyski, The Hound Of The Baskervilles) proudly present Gustave Flaubert’s masterpiece Madame Bovary. The ground-breaking nineteenth century novel is brought spectacularly to life by this internationally acclaimed ensemble company, directed by Gemma Bodinetz. Laugh and cry in equal measures as Emma Bovary chooses the wrong husband. Lose yourself in mesmeric love scenes featuring a stupendous collection of devastatingly handsome men. Question the impotence of women in a Victorian patriarchal society, if you want. Marvel at how many parts a Spanish man with limited English can play with only one moustache. “You had better tell me what I just walked into.” On April Fool’s Day 1984, hours before his 45th birthday, Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father in the shared family home they called the ‘Big House.’ What happened there has been shrouded in mystery since. Revealing what really happened during Marvin Gaye’s haunting final days and celebrating his extraordinary life, Soul is a parable about an American family prepared to do anything to promote and protect their children. Not just the story of Marvin Gaye, but of many a musical icon whose family life has been crushed by the effects of their stardom – a searing portrait of the pitfalls of the American dream. Written by BAFTA and Evening Standard Award-winning Roy Williams (Sucker Punch, Days Of Significance) in close collaboration with members of the family of Marvin Gaye, Soul is a dramatic thriller about one of the most influential musicians of our time. It is directed by Artistic Director James Dacre and features the Royal & Derngate Community Choir. #UntoldSoul

Our final tribute to William Shakespeare, in this anniversary year, is his last masterpiece The Tempest. This vibrant new version is an adaptation by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Oscar and BAFTA-winning Ida; Her Naked Skin, National Theatre) and will be directed by Caroline Steinbeis. Set on a remote island of villains, lovers, fools and outcasts, The Tempest is a tale of enlightenment and forgiveness. Conjuring up a supernatural world of sorcery, savagery, shipwrecks and chivalry, Shakespeare’s late play is the bard at his most mystical and audacious.

TRANSACTION CHARGES The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. This is particularly important as we look to a future with reduced funding support from our local authorities.

Don’t forget, you don’t pay this charge if:

We will continue to charge a ‘per booking’ charge, not ‘per ticket’, which makes our charges lower than many other theatres. We will continue to tell you about these charges, whether you are booking online, over the phone or at the counter.

• You are booking a subscription for Made In Northampton or Royal Philharmonic Orchestra seasons

• You are a member of our Friends, Gold or Artistic Director’s schemes • You book eight or more tickets for a single performance as part of a Group Booking • Your transaction is less than £15

• You are a Disabled Patron

For more information about our charges visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk
