SEASON SPONSORED BY

MADE IN NORTHAMPTON

Our Made In Northampton seasons always aim to present plays that powerfully question the most important issues of our time. 2016 was a year of seismic social and political change and 2017 is already presenting equal challenges. In our last brochure, we announced a mixture of nine classic plays, new commissions, literary adaptations and devised productions, to reflect this age of shock elections, referenda and revolutions. Here we announce three new productions which also offer life-affirming tales of characters who show heroism and the power of hope on their journey to find a place where they belong. As the 150th anniversary of Rudyard Kipling’s birth is celebrated, this Christmas we will premiere a vibrant new musical adaptation of his Nobel Prize-winning family classic The Jungle Book. Featuring all its memorable characters, Jessica Swale’s new adaptation promises to be a thrilling, funny and theatrical re‑imagining of the timeless story. Meanwhile, in our Underground Studio, we collaborate again with Little Angel Theatre on the premiere of Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks’ much-loved The Singing Mermaid for the Under 7s. Several of our productions this year explore the ways in which we develop strategies for dealing with a changing world. Our final new announcement - Harold Pinter’s masterpiece The Caretaker - continues this theme with Pinter’s characteristic blend of humour and humanity. Our upcoming work this Spring includes an ambitious new music-theatre adaptation of Homer’s An Iliad, and a site-specific performance called The Twelfth Player at Northampton Town Football Club’s Sixfields Stadium. It uses interactive technology to portray the experience of Cobblers’ fans across seventy years of the club’s extraordinary history. These are just some of the many exciting productions coming up, several of which will also tour to dozens of theatres nationwide after opening in Northampton. It is as ambitious a season as we have ever produced, held together by a belief that the art of storytelling is as important a way of making sense of our lives today in the internet age as it was for the ancient Greeks.

A unique tour around Sixfields Stadium, portraying the passionate world of football through the eyes of the Cobblers’ fans. Join us for this rare opportunity to go behind the scenes on a 45 minute walking tour around Sixfields Stadium itself and through the past seventy years of Northampton Town Football Club’s history.

WORLD PREMIERE ADD-ON A co-production with

Taking place in the real world and on screen, this family-friendly audiovisual performance, devised by Seven Sisters Group, blends site-specific performance and handheld video technology, moving the audience seamlessly between brilliantly observed characters and placing them right in the heart of the action. Exploring the passion, loyalty and sense of belonging in the world of football, audiences will also delve into fantasy worlds through the eyes of the young supporters. 2015/16 was arguably the most dramatic and euphoric season in the Cobblers’ long and colourful history. In the dark days of November 2015, the club was deep in trouble. Staff and players weren’t getting paid, and Administration was a very real possibility. But through the dedication of their extraordinary fans – the team’s twelfth player – they made an amazing recovery, welcoming a remarkable takeover and bouncing back into League One and winning the Club’s first League title for 29 years. #12thplayer

Following the success of King John, Artistic Director James Dacre collaborates again with composer Orlando Gough and designer Jonathan Fensom, plus a quartet of leading actors, singers and musicians to bring the magnificent scale of Homer’s ancient chronicle to life. EUROPEAN PREMIERE PART OF 2017 SEASON TICKET Adapted by Lisa Peterson & Denis O’Hare Based on Homer’s The Iliad translated by Robert Fagles Composer Orlando Gough

This European Premiere of Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare’s Obie Award-winning An Iliad blends ancient mythology with the myths of our own age and spins a sweeping tale of endless battles, gods and goddesses and undying love. Journeying from Ancient Greece to contemporary Britain, their re-imagination of Homer’s 2,800 year old epic poem is a compassionate account of humanity’s addiction to violence, retribution and chaos. Staged by a creative team that includes three recent Olivier Award nominees, An Iliad offers a vivid musical approach to storytelling which poses the question: has anything really changed since the Trojan War? “SHOCKING, GLORIOUS, PRIMAL, AND DEEPLY SATISFYING… ALMOST MORE THAN OUR HEARTS CAN BEAR” TIME OUT, NEW YORK #Iliad17

Directed by Jesse Jones & Helena Middleton

At the local secondary school it’s a different story. Miss Belltop-Doyle can’t control her Year 9s, Mr Pashley has been put in charge of a confiscated tamagotchi and for some unknown reason Princess Anne is attending the Year 11 leavers assembly. Tobias, the German language assistant, watches on. Things can only get better... Education, Education, Education is a love letter to halcyon ’90s schooldays – to smiley potato faces, to the tv being wheeled in on a Friday afternoon, to yoyos, to CGP, to setting fire to the bin, to pogs and furbies. A tribute to our teachers who were probably just as confused as we were. The show is devised by The Wardrobe Ensemble, who won huge critical acclaim with their 2015 production of 1972: The Future Of Sex at the Edinburgh Fringe. Co-directed by Royal & Derngate’s former RYTDS Director In Residence Jesse Jones and The Wardrobe Ensemble’s Helena Middleton, they use their trademark inventive theatricality and irreverent humour to explore the stories that have shaped our recent political history, and to think about what the future might look like. “THE MOST EXCITING YOUNG COMPANY I HAVE SEEN FOR QUITE A WHILE” THE TIMES #Education17 Contains adult themes

Aston welcomes the homeless Davies into his dilapidated flat, sheltering him from the violence of the streets. Recognising an opportunity, Davies attempts to leave his past behind and start afresh. But what is he being offered? Friendship? Shelter? A job? Or a home? When Mick, the landlord arrives, he confronts the unexpected guest and the three men begin to circle one other suspiciously, each desperate to turn this new situation to their advantage, whatever the cost. Harold Pinter’s 20th century masterpiece explores everyone’s search for a sense of belonging in a world where the line between truth and reality is constantly in flux. Directed by Christopher Haydon (Grounded, Twelve Angry Men), this bold new production explores the paranoia of living in an ever-changing landscape. #Caretaker17

Did you ever go to Silversands On a sunny summer’s day? Then perhaps you saw the mermaid Who sang in the deep blue bay... One day, the singing mermaid is tempted away from all of her sea creature friends and her peaceful home at Silversands to join a travelling circus. The audiences love to hear her sing, but the poor mermaid was tricked! Instead of the swimming pool she was promised, she is kept in a small tank by the wicked circus master Sam Sly, and she soon longs to return to the freedom of the sea. Will she ever escape? And who will help her along the way? Through beautiful puppetry and performance, and with music by Barb Jungr (We’re Going On A Bear Hunt), Royal & Derngate collaborate once again with Little Angel Theatre (Moominsummer Madness, 2014), to bring Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks’ enormously popular story, The Singing Mermaid, to life. #SingingMermaidShow

GREAT EXPECTATIONS BY CHARLES DICKENS

ADAPTATION BY DECLAN DONNELLAN AND NICK ORMEROD

A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict forever changes the life of the orphaned Pip. Turning his back on his humble beginnings as a blacksmith’s apprentice, he strives to better himself and become a gentleman, unaware of the heartache that awaits him. Great Expectations lays bare the web of lies and guilt in Charles Dickens’ least sentimental love story. It also tackles big questions of identity while mustering a cast of unforgettable characters, chief amongst them Miss Havisham, Magwitch and Joe Gargery. Directed by Erica Martin, The Actors Company invite you to immerse yourself in this classic story and discover one of Dickens’s most loved tales.

At Royal & Derngate, we are committed to an accessible pricing policy and offer discounts wherever possible. In some instances, ticket prices and available discounts are dictated by external promoters and there is no flexibility for the provision of discounts. This page represents our usual discounts, however there are a number of shows every season where slightly different concessions apply. A separate discount and pricing structure applies to our Orchestral Season. Box Office will advise if these exceptions affect your tickets at time of booking. Only one concession type applies per ticket. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase.
