WELCOME FROM ROYAL & DERNGATE We are delighted to be announcing our new Orchestral Season for 2018/19. Our partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the cornerstones of our yearly programme and we are proud to have collaborated once more with them to develop a season for everyone to enjoy. We truly believe that Royal & Derngate should be accessible to everyone in our community and we therefore extend a particularly warm welcome to those experiencing the power of orchestral music for the first time through our ballet, rock and prom concerts. Royal & Derngate is going from strength to strength, with more audience members than ever before attending a broad range of live performances, events and films. We are especially proud that our work nurturing the creativity of our community continues to make a substantial impact. Last year more than 26,000 young people took part in Creative Learning, youth theatre and outreach programmes at the theatre and throughout the County. However, just 13% of the theatres’ income is from public funding (considerably less than comparable organisations), so your ongoing support is vital in ensuring that we are able to support future artists and develop future audiences. We therefore urge you to consider making a gift-aided donation to Royal & Derngate when you book your subscription ticket this season. We look forward to welcoming you back and thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to welcoming you.

WELCOME FROM THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA It is with great pleasure that I introduce this forthcoming Orchestral Season at our Northampton resident home, Royal & Derngate. With greater variety than ever, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra looks forward immensely to performing powerful, poignant and impressive symphonic works that are central to the classical repertoire, alongside lighter programmes including Symphonic Rock and Last Night Of The Proms. Prior to A Night At The Ballet in June, we would be delighted if you were able to join us for Meet The Musicians. Our players have some brilliant tales to tell, and this free, informal event offers the opportunity to chat with our musicians and find out more about life within the RPO. Thank you for your continuing support and enthusiasm, we hope you enjoy the season ahead!

MARK BEBBINGTON PERFORMS CHOPIN SUN 8 APRIL 3PM
Smetana The Bartered Bride Overture Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 Sibelius Symphony No.2 Conductor Alan Buribayev Piano Mark Bebbington Bringing a distinctly Romantic feel to the afternoon is Smetana’s vibrant Overture to his first and most enduring comic opera The Bartered Bride, followed by Mark Bebbington performing Chopin’s dazzling Piano Concerto No.2. Technically taxing and richly melodic, Chopin’s masterpiece blends rippling virtuosity, Polish dance rhythms and lyricism.
One of Sibelius’ most engaging and beautiful compositions, his Symphony No.2 evokes the expansive, glacial landscape of his native Finland. From an anguished slow movement to a finale of furious passion, this piece climaxes in a flourish of exhilarating heroism.
