Traditional Folk Music of Rajasthan The northern Indian state of Rajasthan has always been an important tourist attraction of the country. With the historical heritage and vibrant culture, this desert state has created several admirers and thus is one of the most visited destinations in India. Rajasthani culture imbibes in itself age-old traditions, attractive dance forms and some soul soothing folk music. The folk music of Rajasthan is not untouched by the influence of surrounding areas and a glimpse of Pakistan’s Sindh province can be witnessed. The accent and dialects of nearby states of Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana can often heard in the vocals of the folk songs. The Folk music of the state has originated from day to day activities, storytelling and deep emotions of the people which give a unique character to the music from this region. Traditional music includes the women’s Panihari songs, which lyrically describe chores, especially centered on water and wells, both of which are an integral part of Rajasthan’s desert culture. Other songs, played by various castes, normally begin with the alap, which sets the tune and is followed by a recital of a couplet (dooba). Epic ballads tell of heroes like Devnarayan Bhagwan, Gogaji, Ramdeoji, Pabuji and Tejaji. Due to the diversity of the state, the folk music emerges from every caste, class and region of Rajasthan. The musician castes of Rajasthan involve Mirasis and Jogis of Mewat, Manganiyars and Langas, Bhopas, Kanjars, Saperas, Banjaras and Dholies. Mangniyars and Langas are the most prominent ones who perform worldwide with their unique music styles where the former having a liberal approach and the latter showcasing influence of Muslim styles. A unique character of their performance is that they sing specific ragas for particular time of the day and particular season and one can find them singing songs reserved for specific occasions like weddings, births, festivals, etc. This passion of singing has been passed from generations to generations and the folk artists very efficiently carry the styles acquired from their forefathers and ancestors. Folk of Rajasthan also involves a variety of instruments ranging from tiny Damru to Sarangi, Kamayacha, Morchang and huge Nagara and Dhols that produce assorted sounds and music. When in the trained hands of talented folk musicians, these musical instruments produce magic in the form of exotic melodies that never fail to mesmerize the listeners. Though the musical compositions are quite complex but are performed fluidly by the folk singers, some of whom are even kids with 4-6 years of age but perform


fearlessly at the stage with their group. The voices of Rajasthani singers, both Male and female are very powerful yet refined. The amalgamation of powerful voices and rhythmatic music adds life to the otherwise dull weather and ruthless living conditions of the region. The contributions of musical gharanas of Rajasthan cannot be neglected in the popularity of the state. The hypnotic melodies of the folk music have captured the hearts of the people not within the country but also across the borders. Tourists from foreign land specially plan their itineraries to have a taste of the Rajasthani folk music along with dance performances of the artists in traditional and vibrant attires. Folk performers from the state are invited to perform at events held in different parts of the world and these perform spread the glitters of their talent wherever they go though their traditional music and styles.
