By Trinity Houston1 It’s been almost a decade since I was last in Aruba. I remember it well, the beautiful white sandy beaches, the friendly people, and the way the entire atmosphere just wraps itself around you. I stayed at the Costa Linda Beach Resort, a place that’s been on the island for quite some time, adorned with one of the most gorgeous beaches in the area. Even though it was considered “slow season” I remember being quite impressed with the high occupancy.

Something magical was happening at this resort. When speaking with many of the people on vacation there, most of them were members. I began to hear stories of how their families had been coming for decades to Costa Linda, year after year. This truly was a second home to a majority of these vacationers. I also clearly remember the high demand to stay at Costa Linda. Rental units were very hard to come by since most were owned by members, who opted to never rent-out their units but instead, use them year after year. If someone wanted to buy into the resort, it was pretty much impossible, except in the rare case when another member would sell their unit. In fact, there was an ongoing wishlist of more than 180 people wanting to buy weeks in this Shangri-La, if they ever became available. Demand was so high, it was clear this resort was one of the most coveted places on the entire island. I thought to myself, this is a dream come true for any timeshare resort. They have high occupancy week after week and year after year, with happy members and guests. Too bad they don’t have extra space to expand!

Now nearly a decade later, I just heard the amazing news that Costa Linda will be expanding. My first question, of course, was where? And then, how did they decide to do this? I proceeded to learn the whole brilliant story. When one of the restaurant rental areas became available, the board of directors took a deep look into what would be the best type of business to put into the locale. Should they do another restaurant rental? Perhaps a casino? Or maybe a grocery store? After running all of the numbers and exploring the possibilities, the idea came up to use the space for exactly what was in the highest demand - additional units! They would take the feedback they had received over the years and incorporate that knowledge into the new build. Five complete units in total, two of two-bedroom and three of three-bedroom, splitting into a total of 10 separate units due to the ”lock-off” design. And another well thought out bonus, the ability to have all five units grouped together with joining doors. This new addition will be known as ”The Frangipani Suites.”

Because of the high demand, they decided to open the pre-construction sales to an auction. This is completely UNHEARD of in the vacation ownership industry, but this group of people understood their market and the magic of Costa Linda. In just a few short weeks of the auction, the resort was already in the black, and after a few months, more than 50% of the new inventory was already sold-out. What a great way to utilize a space that would just have been a rental locale. Costa Linda, what you have built and continue to maintain, is nothing short of amazing. You are surely coveted by your peers, as well as most companies who strive to have customer loyalty. Congratulations to you all. Well done, Costa Linda... very well done.

Lo recuerdo bien, las hermosas playas de arena blanca, la gente amable, y la forma en que toda la atmósfera se envuelve a su alrededor. Me alojé en Costa Linda Beach Resort, un lugar que ha estado en la isla por bastante tiempo, adornado con una de las playas más hermosas de la zona. A pesar de que se consideró ”temporada baja” recuerdo haber quedado bastante impresionado con una alta ocupación. Algo mágico estaba sucediendo en este resort. Al hablar con muchas de las personas de vacaciones allí, la mayoría de ellos eran miembros. Comencé a oír historias de cómo sus familias habían venido durante décadas a Costa Linda, año tras año. Esto realmente era un segundo hogar a la mayoría de estos vacacionistas. También recuerdo claramente la alta demanda de estancia en Costa Linda. Las unidades de renta eran muy difíciles de encontrar ya que la mayoría eran propiedad de socios, que optaron por nunca alquilar sus unidades pero en su lugar, usarlas año tras año. HIT THE BEACH Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

PLAIN SAILING The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaks and sail boating and as a Costa Linda member or guest you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite. Reservations are taken at the Towel desk or you can call Ext. 7224. Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the use of kayaks is at your own risk. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

FITNESS CENTER Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need. Please wear proper attire: shirt, shorts and sneakers. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. The Gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

KID’S STUFF After swimming and splashing in the kids pool, take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specifically for them. The kids play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week. You must supervise your children at all times and ensure that there is no rough play on the equipment that may endanger their safety. The use of the installations is at your own risk.

SUN TIPS It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water. If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

Many of us today are familiar with the healing characteristics of the Aloe vera plant, but few really know anything about its unusual history. The Aloe vera plant was first brought over from Africa to Aruba in 1840. Back then, no one could have predicted the enormous impact this plant would have, not only on this tiny Caribbean island, but ultimately around the world. Recognizing the potential of the plant’s nourishing attributes, an enterprising young man by the name of Cornelis Eman planted 150 acres in the Aruban town of Hato in 1890 and began to cultivate it. Somehow, the island’s desert-like environment intensified Aloe’s naturally soothing and moisturizing qualities. So unique was the plant’s ability to improve the overall health of the skin, that news of Aloe’s many benefits soon spread across the seas. And by 1920, Aruba received the “Island of Aloes” nickname.

Aruba Aloe was the first company to formulate and manufacture Aloe-based skin products from the abundant plants which populated the beautiful Caribbean island. Little did Cornelis know that Aruba Aloe, the company he founded, would still be going strong nearly 130 years later and in the same location no less! Spanning across three centuries, the oldest Aloe company in the world is still arguably the best in the world. As they say, “the cream rises to the top” or in this case, the balm!

Today, visitors to the island can learn of the unique history of the plant and its subsequent impact on the world by touring the Aruba Aloe Museum and Factory, all free of charge. Still in the same location in Hato after all these years, the products of Aruba Aloe continue to be grown and manufactured on site. A fully modernized factory has long since replaced the one of yesteryear. However, the museum has preserved many of the artifacts originally used in the cultivation of the plant and the manufacturing of the Aloe-based products. In addition to learning about the history of the plant, visitors who take the tour will be able to see exactly how Aloe is cut, tested, packaged and stored.

After the tour, visitors are able to browse through the myriad of Aloe-based products that are manufactured there, including numerous skin care lotions, creams, and gels; sun care products; body mists and bath soaps; as well as specialized hydration treatments for skin related injuries. The facility is open Monday through Saturday with tours taking place every 15 minutes. Tours are available in English, Dutch, Spanish and Aruba’s native language of Papiamento.

YOUR RESORT HOME When you stay at the Resort, you are not a guest in a hotel, you own your suite during the interval purchased. The Resort is not a hotel, nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understand why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit. As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front desk for assistance. You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes. Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice. Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and Resort Management. Unlike hotels, Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit. Owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights, or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues. Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer, nor allowed to give, free gifts. AIR-CONDITIONING Costa Linda Beach Resort has installed a state of the art environmentally friendly “Smart Thermostat” system as part of its ongoing commitment to our owners and the community at large. The Smart Thermostat system senses when the Suite is unoccupied and will raise the thermostat set point to an economical humidity control setting until the moment a guest returns to the room. Please allow a few minutes for the room to cool to your selected temperature upon your return. Please be aware that the air conditioning unit will be interrupted if you should leave a door open. This prevents harmful mold issues, humidity damage and energy waste.

Arubian Rum: A Caribbean Tradition By David Minasian

The beautiful Caribbean island of Aruba is known for lots of things… its wonderful beaches, its classically perfect climate and its friendly atmosphere. It’s also home to some of the most delicious rums found anywhere in the world. Rum has served as an inspiration behind many cultural paragons down through the centuries - from Caribbean pirates to Don the Beachcomber, from the writings of Ernest Hemingway to the songs of Jimmy Buffett. Even America’s first president George Washington has his own connection to the sugar-based spirit. Images of the perpetually inebriated Johnny Depp portraying Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are what usually come to mind when thinking about the early history of rum. And there is a good reason for that. Rum can indeed be traced back as the beverage of choice among those participating in non-legal conduct on pirate ships dating back to the 1600s. However, there were more legitimate sailing vessels which utilized the spirit as well. During the 1730s, the British Royal Navy rationed a daily pint of Caribbean rum to each of its sailors - a tradition which lasted all the way up through to the 1970s! Rum was, in fact, considered a necessity on board these ships. In 1762, in An Essay on the Most Effectual Means of Preserving the Health of Seamen in the Royal Navy, Dr. James Lind wrote that rum “proves the best and quickest restorative which a sailor can have at sea.” Also during the 1700s in early America, rum began to be manufactured on a wide scale. The sugarcane industry was booming. During the cultivation process, sugarcane was crushed and its extracted juice boiled. In doing so, the sugar crystallized, forming a syrupy byproduct known as molasses. Someone soon discovered that if you were to distill the fermented molasses, rum would be produced. Rum quickly became a favorite among American colonists. In fact, it has been estimated that the average early American consumed nearly 4 gallons of rum per year. It was even viewed as an appropriate gift from early politicians. During one of his pre-presidential events, George Washington provided his constituents with more than 75 gallons of the brew. By 1764, America had distilled nearly 5 million gallons of rum along the East Coast making

it more readily available than whiskey, America’s other preferred spirit at the time. That same year, the British government passed the Sugar Act of 1764 which imposed increased taxes upon the American colonies and forbid the importation of rum. In revolt, activists staged a protest that would foreshadow

Today, Aruba is home to one of the finest rum manufacturing plants around. The Palmera Rum Factory, located in the city of Oranjestad, offers must-see tours of its facilities. The Arubian Taste, located a short distance from the factory, gives visitors the opportunity to try a large variety of different rums including Coconut Rum, Ginger Rum, Blueberry Rum, Cranberry Rum, Raspberry Rum, Lemon Rum, Coffee Rum and even Almond Joy Rum. Aruba was first settled by an Amerindian tribe called the Caiquetios. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island. The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. The name Aruba is derived from the words “ore” and “ruba” or red gold, a reference to the discovery of gold on the island in 1824. In 1986, Aruba won its independence from The Netherlands Antilles and has status apart or autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator. Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast. Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat. The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 m above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time. Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear. Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares. Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions. The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archeological sites throughout the island. Visit the Kunsthuis art gallery, café and cultural center where the entertainment program includes concerts, theater, movies and exhibitions.

SPANISH LAGOON

Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent

The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds including the endemic shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats. Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants. The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

LEARN HOW TO WINDSURF

The prevailing trade winds that blow across Aruba at a constant 15 knots cause choppy conditions along the windward shore, making beaches like Boca Grandi unsuitable for swimming and snorkeling but highly desirable for experienced windsurfers, kite boarders and surfers. Indeed, the island has its own windsurfing community and over the past few years, several local windsurfers have triumphed in international tournaments. The island also hosts the annual HiWinds Amateur World Challenge Windsurfing competition. If you would like to learn how to windsurf and feel the thrill of coursing through the waves, ask at the Concierge desk about classes available from local water sports centers. You’ll start off on the Leeward coast where the breeze is much gentler. If you are a keen windsurfer, you might like to try kite boarding and see for yourself why it has caught on around the world.

If you are an old hand with a rod and net or you have always wanted to try fishing, the waters around Aruba provide plenty of challenges. Game fish such as sailfish, blue and white marlin, wahoo, tuna, bonito and dorado are plentiful year-round. You can charter a boat for a day or a halfday and the experienced crew will take you right to where the fish are running. Help preserve local fish stocks by adhering to the catch and release policy.

Most golfers make a beeline for the Tierra del Sol golf course on the northwest tip of the island. This 18-hole, par 71 course designed by Robert Trent Jones II is challenging and has spectacular views of the Caribbean and the surrounding countryside. There are also two 9-hole courses at the Aruba Golf Club near San Nicolas in the south and the Links at the Divi Resort. Mini golf provides hours of afternoon fun for the family.
