Welcome Welcome to St. Maarten/St. Martin!

MARCEL JAVOIS

General Manager Simpson Bay Resort & Marina

You’ve come to a very unique country where extraordinary beauty and friendliness contribute to a peaceful and charming Caribbean way of life. It is the smallest island in the world to be shared by two nations, the Netherlands and France, creating a distinctive European influence with a Caribbean panache. St. Maarten is also the culinary capital of the Caribbean, with an array of elegant culinary fusion that keeps “food lovers” returning each year. With more than 300 restaurants, the island has something for everyone. To this splendid island, Simpson Bay Resort & Marina brings a wonderful resort, offering a wealth of leisure activities. We have plenty of adventures for those who like to stay busy, and six swimming pools plus a beautiful beach for those who enjoy a more relaxed approach. The resort staff joins me in extending a warm island welcome. Now sit back, relax, enjoy your vacation and please call on any of the staff – or me personally – whenever we may be of service. We are committed to serving YOU!

Explorers will be well rewarded with an adventure unlike anything the Dutch side of the island has to offer. In contrast to the bustling cruise ship port of Philipsburg, Marigot is home to luxury yachts and charming boutiques. The cafés and bars along the marina offer some of the best pizza on the island, daily specials and fresh mussels, and remain packed with patrons throughout the day. Inland from the marina and those bustling cafés, you’ll find the Rue de la Liberté and the beginning of your shopping experience in Marigot.

RUV

The entire center and marina area of Marigot is a lovely shopping district with old Créole houses, bistro bars, cafes, restaurants, fashion and designer boutiques, jewelers and perfume shops.

PHILIPSBURG THE CAPITAL OF DUTCH SINT MAARTEN, PHILIPSBURG, IS RICH IN HISTORY AND ABUNDANT IN SHOPPING.

Founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch Navy, the town’s history is still felt when you pass by the historic Court House that was built in 1793. Philipsburg became a bustling center for international trade including salt mining, which was the Dutch settler’s main interest in this unique island. Remnants of the original Great Salt Pond can still be seen while driving along Walter A. Nisbeth Road, also known as Pondfill Road. www.simpsonbayresort.com

on the Dutch side, in the heart of Philipsburg. Philipsburg features over a mile of shopping. In addition to Front Street, there is Old Street with attractive gift stores and art galleries, and Back Street with a colorful local market, souvenir shops, and inexpensive clothing.

Shops in MARIGOT offer many of the same high-end goods you’ll find at shops in Philipsburg – perfume, jewelry and clothing to name a few – but with a decidedly French influence. Many of the best boutiques can be found in the West Indies Mall, which lies at the base of a hill. Fort St. Louis sits at the top of the very same hill. Built in 1767 from plans developed by King Louis XVI, most famous for being guillotined during the French Revolution, this squat stone fort is one of the must-see sites in Marigot and offers a stunning view of the entire city. Another, perhaps more macabre site, is the city’s cemetery, which dates back to the early 19th century. The French Caribbean influence will be noticeable to anyone who has been to New Orleans and seen similar above ground crypts. Along with these sites, visitors should be sure to hit Marigot’s open-air market, which takes place each Wednesday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Rue de France, along the

wharves. This is a wonderful time to enjoy many of the local farmer’s treats such as sweet potatoes, coconuts, tropical fruits, local spices, fresh fish, and of course the various local arts and crafts. For Francophiles who visit the resort, Marigot is a must-see. We recommend getting there nice and early so you can start your day with a warm croissant and a cup of freshly brewed coffee at one of the many cafes. After visiting the open-air market and the high-end shopping in the many unique boutiques, stop by Marina Royale. This marina is more than just a home for the yachts. Today, you will find a variety of waterfront cafes, craft shops, bistros, and a wonderful museum with Haitian artwork. Check out the view from Fort St. Louis and visit the cemetery along the Rue de Sandy Ground as you head out of town. This spectacular French Caribbean journey begins from your island home, Simpson Bay Resort & Marina. Experience Marigot by hopping on the Monday Island Bus Trip, spending a day or two exploring via the daily boat ride with Aqua Mania or by renting a car with Dollar/Thrifty & Paradise car rental. With as many boutiques and fabulous restaurants for which the island is renowned – France is calling!

On most days, it is impossible to miss the gigantic vessels docked at the A.C. Wathey Pier. Great Bay, the bay in front of Philipsburg, can accommodate six large cruise ships at once. In fact, the pier was expanded in 2009 to accommodate the world’s largest mega class cruise ships. Today, PHILIPSBURG is arguably the premier Caribbean destination for the world’s largest cruise lines. With its compact nature and easy-to-follow street plan, Philipsburg is made for pedestrian traffic and an ideal shopping experience. The Boardwalk, along the beautiful shores of Great Bay, is the place to grab a drink or have lunch while listening to live music. Head on up to Front Street for fantastic shops packed with jewelry, electronics and clothing stores. Front Street is also home to a variety of points of interest, including the St. Maarten Museum and the St. Maarten Guavaberry Company. Although guavaberries grow throughout the Caribbean, St. Maarten has taken their cultivation to special heights, and the St. Maarten Guavaberry Company

offers liqueur, barbecue sauce, jam and other goods all made with the island’s native fruit. Make sure to stop by for free samples of their delicious Rum blends including the famous Guavaberry Colada. Turn north onto any alley (Dutch: steeg) or street (Dutch: straat) and you will find a busy shopping area, Back Street. The market here offers a taste of Caribbean flair with a variety of clothing stores and kiosks with great bargains. Getting from the resort to Philipsburg couldn’t be easier. Take Aqua Mania’s water taxi, rent a car on site from Dollar/Thrifty & Paradise car rental, or ride the free, air-conditioned bus provided by AMA jewelers. Cold drinks and a short guided tour covering the history and interesting landmarks is included. Check with your personal concierge for bus schedules and to sign up. Once you experience the flavor of Philipsburg, you are sure to crave another trip to the Caribbean’s shopping capital.

THE STRONGEST CATEGORY 5 ON RECORD EVER TO ORIGINATE OVER THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. The word “celebrate” may seem like an odd word choice, considering the massive devastation and havoc the storm brought to the shores of this beautiful Caribbean island. However, throughout the ordeal and in the days and weeks that followed, the staff of the Simpson Bay Resort & Marina provided countless reasons for celebration for those who found themselves caught in the middle of this historic storm’s horrific destruction.

IN A TIME OF NEED By Trinity Houston.

ON SEPT 6, 2018 THE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS TO THE ISLAND OF ST. MAARTEN CELEBRATED THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HURRICANE IRMA

70 7 0 RESORT LIFE

After receiving advance warnings of the approaching storm, staff members immediately began making the necessary preparations to protect its guests, as well as minimize potential damage to the resort itself. Vital, life-saving information was updated regularly and disseminated to the guests via phone, printed materials, and in-room televisions. While some were able to make it off the island in time, many found themselves stranded once they discovered there were no more available flights. With the hurricane fast approaching, regular meetings between staff and guests were arranged and held in the Simpson Bay lobby. Everyone cooperated and followed directions, making sure they were stocked up on needed medications along with plenty of food and water to get them through the impending crisis. As the winds started to pick up, people were instructed not www.simpsonbayresort.com

to leave their rooms until notified. No one needed to be venturing outside, thinking the storm was over, while the hurricane’s eye hovered overhead. By 4 a.m., the storm’s fury was in full force, reaching 185 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 225 mph! The noise and pressure inside each of the suites was staggering. With many of us hunkered down in our bathrooms, what first sounded like a freight train barreling straight for us, turned into the sound of jet engines. The buildings shook and we could hear horrible crashes all around. At one point, the pressure was so great, it felt like our heads were in a vice grip, ready to explode. The eye of the storm provided a few moments of calm, before the devastation resumed. Fortunately the second half of the storm, with winds now whirling in the opposite direction, wasn’t as bad as the first. Morning light greeted us with a scene right out of a Hollywood disaster film. Upside down cars were piled on top of one another. Several vehicles had even been picked up from the parking lot and tossed into a pool area. Miraculously, there were no deaths or major injuries. And despite considerable damage which included broken windows, shattered walls and missing roofs, Simpson Bay Resort & Marina proved to be one of the sturdiest and safest structures on the island. Many people worked tirelessly around the clock before and after the hurricane to insure the safety of our Simpson Bay guests.

St Maarten’s utilities company GeBe was able to supply us with fuel while the Military and Police forces provided protection and support. There were heroic efforts all around. Staff members risked their lives during the midst of the raging storm to save others, including one of our staff members who successfully rescued a baby and family from a villa whose roof had been torn off.

Following the devastation, an amazing spirit of unity swept through Simpson Bay. People shared food and other items with people they didn’t know. Many of the guests, which included doctors and nurses, volunteered to help those in need. Soon the food and beverage team began supplying everyone with meals, while local restaurants and businesses began donating food, water and other supplies. Meanwhile, our incredibly talented staff technicians managed to get our phone and internet lines up and running in less than 24 hours. Due to it being one of the few standing structures with reliable communications, Simpson Bay Resort & Marina quickly became a hub of safety for stranded tourists. People from nearby resorts whose management and staff had left, along with local residents whose homes had been destroyed, began migrating toward Simpson Bay. These “refugees” were welcomed with open arms. They had heard that our staff had volunteered to remain on site in order to assist in the aftermath.

However, we were far from being out of the woods. On the heels of Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Jose, another Category 5, was heading straight for the island of St. Maarten and would reach the shore within 72 hours! Through contacts back in the U.S. and round the clock coordination by Royal Resort Senior Executive Staff operating out of Mexico, Simpson Bay managed to connect with Senator Marco Rubio’s office who then relayed information regarding our plight to the U.S. State Department. The White House quickly jumped into action and held a press conference where they announced a plan to rescue 1200 Americans stranded on the island of St. Maarten. SBR became the main point of contact for the U.S. Government.

At the appropriate time, we were able to transport everyone to the airport, which wasn’t an easy task since most vehicles had been damaged during the storm. Several round trips had to be made using shuttles with missing windshields to get everyone to the area where people were scheduled to be airlifted to Puerto Rico. It was a tense moment waiting for that first plane to arrive as the sky grew increasingly ominous due to the next incoming hurricane. However, the rescue operation turned out to be a complete success! Thanks must go to the Dutch Ministry of Defense, the St. Maarten Ministry of Tourism, Curacao’s Air Traffic Control Center, the U.S. Military, the Puerto Rico Air National Guard and the Red Cross, with special thanks to the people of Puerto Rico who opened their hearts by providing all evacuees with food, clothing and hugs. Upon their safe arrival in Puerto Rico, many of the rescued guests were briefed by U.S. Government officials. Nearly all of them gave massive accolades to the management and staff of Simpson Bay - even those who had been staying at other resorts.

”...It truly is a home away from home, complete with a loving and caring family that would go to great lengths to keep their family members safe...”

They say you really find out what people are made of during a crisis. The fact is, the Simpson Bay Resort & Marina proved to be a safe haven to so many. It truly is a home away from home, complete with a loving and caring family that would go to great lengths to keep their family members safe. And in just a little over a year, this resort has managed to regain its Premier Resort status, thanks to the effort of SBR’s team. Thank you Simpson Bay Resort & Marina. A million times over…. Thank You.

DUDE, WHERE’S MY BAG?! By David Minasian

DURING THE CHAOTIC POST HURRICANE IRMA EVACUATION PROCESS GUESTS OF SIMPSON BAY RESORT & MARINA SUDDENLY FOUND THEMSELVES IN THE UNENVIABLE POSITION OF HAVING TO LEAVE BEHIND SOME OR ALL OF THEIR LUGGAGE.

7 6 RESORT LIFE

INSTRUCTIONS HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN GIVEN TO GUESTS TO “PACK YOUR BAGS” IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER: - Your most important items in a bag or backpack that could fit on your lap. - Next most important items in a carry-on size suitcase. - Everything else in your largersized luggage. The U.S. State Department then sent word that everyone would be allowed only one carry on bag, but didn’t distinguish the size. All of the Simpson Bay guests had heeded the instructions and arrived to the airport with only their smaller bags. Other tourists however arrived with what appeared to be ALL of their luggage. As the guests began boarding the C-130 transport planes, only bags small enough to fit on one’s lap were permitted, so even the smaller roller type carry-ons were taken by the military. And those with the larger suitcases didn’t stand a chance. Not expecting to leave their suitcases behind, many had failed to include any type of identification on their bags. In the rush to board the planes before the fast approaching Hurricane Jose became a factor, evacuees were hastily handed a ballpoint pen and instructed to quickly write their information on their remaining luggage. Everyone was told the bags would be delivered to the U.S. in a separate plane and distributed shortly thereafter.

Yet weeks went by and no luggage arrived. Evacuees continued to call the U.S. State Department for answers, but to no avail. Six weeks had already elapsed when Simpson Bay’s Management received a call from the State Department wondering if the resort could help locate the luggage, because in their words, it had “apparently been misplaced!” Throughout the entire crisis, the Simpson Bay Resort & Marina had been the U.S. Government’s primary point of contact on the Island of St. Maarten due to their efficiency and reliable communications. As a result, Simpson Bay initiated a massive search of the Princess Juliana Airport, and lo and behold, the missing baggage was found, located in an abandoned luggage bay at the heavily damaged airport, which was still without electricity! Coordinating with the State Department and the Ground Aviation Services at SXM, volunteers from the Simpson Bay Resort & Marina staff began to itemize the nearly 1000 pieces of luggage that were left behind on that fateful day of evacuation six weeks earlier. The cases were sorted by color for identification, and the painstakingly tedious task of matching owner with luggage began.

As each of the hurricane survivors received calls that their luggage had been found and returned, the gratitude expressed was overwhelmingly touching…

The days were hot and the mosquitos were biting. But one by one, volunteers managed to connect with the owners of every piece of baggage containing a tag, phone number or email address. Soon, word began to spread that Simpson Bay was helping to reunite the lost luggage with their owners, and not only for the guests of Simpson Bay, but for all of the tourists that had been evacuated. Hundreds of calls were made back and forth until piece by piece, nearly every suitcase was returned to their owners. This was no small task especially considering that a large number of bags had no identification! The whole process took nearly a month. With the help of American and Delta Airlines and Signature Flight Services, the luggage was sent by plane to those airports closest to the owner’s hometown.

“Your compassion and caring for us has touched our hearts. This generous gesture of finding our luggage has helped to bring healing to our family from the traumatic experience of Hurricane Irma.”

Hello, Dear Friend. I’m so happy to be with you again! What an ordeal we went through in St. Maarten. When those planes came to pick us up for the evacuation, I was so happy! But then…. they took me from you and I didn’t know if I’d ever see you again. Fortunately, someone from the Simpson Bay Resort & Marina in St. Maarten found all of us, and figured out a way to reunite me with you!! Finally, together again! Love,

“Simpson Bay Resort really seems to have their stuff together. Our timeshare people were terrible, and I mean it. SBR had meetings about what was going on and seemed to help everyone on the island with information and the evacuation. When we were in line waiting to get on the C-130, there were representatives from the resort actually keeping track of their guests. And now, with the luggage issue, we had a note in our returned bag from SBR. Kudos to this organization. Our next timeshare purchase will be there.” RESORT LIFE

Accidents will happen and rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from resort personnel should suffice. The Resort is not a hotel nor is it managed as such.
