ammy, I am 27. And my Instagram/ social media name is Sammyy02k, I chose this because my birthday is April 2, and my last name starts with a K. I thought of it a long time ago not knowing it would grow to be such a big name and eventually trademarked. I am from Portland Oregon, I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology. I have been doing social media as a fulltime job for 1 year. How do you balance your day as you are a Model | innovative Influencer? Most of my day is spent on my phone, posting content, picking thru photo shoots, responding to messages, engaging with my followers and getting lost in other people's content to get inspired to make more. I have

a lot of social media pages to manage so it definitely takes up a lot of my day getting each one caught up. 3 Terms That Describe You? Passionate, Hardworking, Persistent what is your favourite quote? Love me or hate me it’s still an obsession. I think this is a great quote especially for my career, you’re going to get some people who just love to hate you and you can’t do anything about it but laugh because they are spending their life to be obsessed about yours. where do you see yourself in 3 to 4 years to come from now? I would love to have my own reality show, or have my YouTube really up and running and doing more travel vlogging.

Before Life on Instagram what were you engaged on? I worked and showed horses for about 14 years. I was super shy and just a nerdy animal person throughout most of my life. Social media really helped me to blossom into a social butterfly and be more outgoing. How long did it t ak e you to get you we r e you ar e today ? It took me about 3 years to get me where I am at today. I started really getting into taking photos end of my college years. BOTOX The Pro’s and Con’s of Botox Treatment

At what age should you start getting Botox? Most patients typically start using Botox at age 30, some even in their mid-20s. It’s possible to benefit from preventative Botox treatments starting as early as 25, but before that, the odds are low that you could have built up enough lines to worry about Can I wear makeup after Botox?

Can Botox make you look older? Having Botox too young can make you look older, as it could actually accelerate the ageing process. Excessive use of Botox over a long period of time can cause muscles to waste away

Directions

1. Heat the sugar and 250ml water in a saucepan, stirring continually until the sugar has dissolved. Add both the ground and fresh ginger, the tartaric acid and cream of tartar, and bring to a simmer. 2. Simmer for 10 minutes until the mixture has slightly thickened and become golden in colour. Mix the syrup with the remaining water, stir in the yeast, and transfer to a clean 4-litre bucket with a lid or two 2-litre plastic bottles. Add the raisins. 3. Place in a warm spot, but not in direct sunlight, for 8 hours. (If you choose to leave the yeast out, place in a warm spot for 24–48 hours, and open the bucket or bottles every 12 hours to allow the gas to escape.) The raisins should start spinning and rising to the top when the ginger beer is ready. 4. Strain using a clean muslin cloth, chill and add the lemon juice, if using. Serve with fresh ginger slices and lemongrass, to impart flavour, and crushed ice.

The 7 Reasons We Fail By Harvey Mackay

As any successful person will honestly admit, failure happens, and we’ve all had our fair share of it. But from each failure, we learn two equally valuable lessons. One, that there was at least one reason we failed; and two, that we can rebound from that failure. According to Shiv Khera, author of You Can Win, failures most often occur for one of seven reasons. And Harvey Mackay, best-selling author and business speaker, says each one can teach us something valuable, can show us how to avoid falling back into the same hole. Here are the most common failure-causing problems and their solutions:

1. Lack of Persistence

More people fail not because they lack knowledge or talent but because they just quit. It’s important to remember two words: persistence and resistance. Persist in what must be done and resist what ought not to be done. Try new approaches. Persistence is important, but repeating the same actions over and over again, hoping that this time you’ll succeed, probably won’t get you any closer to your objective. Look at your previous unsuccessful efforts and decide

34 |

IS S U U .C O M /R O YA L R O U G E M A G A Z IN E | JUNE 2020

what to change. Keep making adjustments and midcourse corrections, using your experience as a guide.

2. Lack of Conviction

People who lack conviction take the middle of the road. But what happens in the middle of the road? You get run over. People without conviction go along to get along because they lack confidence and courage. They conform in order to get accepted, even when they know that what they are doing is wrong.

Decide what is important to you. If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right and doing well. Let your passion show even in mundane tasks. It’s OK to collaborate and cooperate for success, but it’s not OK to compromise your values—ever. • Here’s how to speak with conviction.

idealized vision of what success will look and feel like. Although that can be motivational, it might not be realistic. Succeeding at one goal won’t eliminate all your problems. Be clear on what will satisfy your objectives and don’t obsess about superficial details. • Here’s how to be more disciplined.

3. Rationalization

6. Poor Self-Esteem

4. Dismissal of Past Mistakes

7. Fatalistic Attitude

Winners might analyze, but they never rationalize. Losers rationalize and have a book full of excuses to tell you why they couldn’t succeed. Change your perspective. Don’t think of every unsuccessful attempt as a failure. Few people succeed at everything the first time. Most of us attain our goals only through repeated effort. Do your best to learn everything you can about what happened and why. • Here’s how to change your perspective, Some people live and learn, and some only live. Failure is a teacher if we have the right attitude. Wise people learn from their mistakes—experience is the name they give to slipups. Define the problem better. Analyze the situation—what you want to achieve, what your strategy is, why it didn’t work. Are you really viewing the problem correctly? If you need money, you have more options than increasing revenue. You could also cut expenses. Think about what you’re really trying to do. • Here’s how to learn from past mistakes.

5. Lack of Discipline

Anyone who has accomplished anything worthwhile has never done it without discipline. Discipline takes self-control, sacrifice and avoiding distractions and temptations. It means staying focused. Don’t be a perfectionist. You might have an

Poor self-esteem is a lack of self-respect and self-worth. People with low self-confidence are constantly trying to find themselves rather than creating the person they want to be. Don’t label yourself. You might have failed, but you’re not a failure until you stop trying. Think of yourself as someone still striving toward a goal, and you’ll be better able to maintain your patience and perseverance for the long haul. • Here’s how to fight low-esteem by building confidence. A fatalistic attitude prevents people from accepting responsibility for their position in life. They attribute success and failure to luck. They resign themselves to their fate, regardless of their efforts, that whatever has to happen will happen anyway. Look in the mirror every day and say, I am in charge. You might not have control over every phase of your life, but you have more control than you realize, and you are responsible for your own happiness and success. Your attitude determines your altitude, and you can turn “down and out” into “up and at ’em.” • Here’s how to avoid a fatalistic attitude. WARDROBE

19Ways to Look Better Instantly

I used to love makeover shows, but I was always slightly dejected when each episode was over. There was no miraculous makeover in the cards for me. There was no easy way for me to look better instantly. I was already giving it everything I had. But was I really? Sure, I was doing most of the big stuff, from semi-regular haircuts to flattering everyday makeup, but some of the smaller stuff had fallen through the cracks. Fortunately, I’ve learned, and that’s why I compiled this list of the little things; small improvements that yield big results. And here they are.

1. Whiten Your Teeth

Nothing makes you look prettier and more approachable than a bright, healthy smile. As Charla Krupp once famously proclaimed, yellow teeth are aging! Fortunately, they are so easy to fix! A friend recently told me that she gets her teeth professionally cleaned at the dentist’s office three times a year instead of twice, and I immediately decided to do the same thing. If you don’t want to invest in a professional whitening treatment, use an at-home whitening system or a portable tooth whitening pen. Another tip? Try cool, blue-based lipcolors (cherry,

36 |

raspberry, wine) instead of warm tones (coral) to counteract the yellow in your teeth, or try a gloss designed to help your teeth look whiter.

2. Change Up Your Manicure

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with acrylic nails. Wait, yes, yes I am. I know this is controversial, but thick, long, squared-off nails are dated. The trendiest talons now are delicate, whether short and delicate or longer and slightly almond-shaped at the tip. Don’t be afraid to break out of the French manicure box. There are so many chic, wearable manicure ideas out

WARDROBE there that are neutral and more updated. Classic red, coral or sheer pink nails are always chic. Or if you’re looking for something funkier, try painting all of your nails in one solid color, and then adding a sparkly topcoat to a single nail on each hand, or try a colorful new nail wrap like the ones from Jamberry.

3. Ditch the Boring Bag

Your bag should be a beautiful, high-quality statement piece. It should not be boring, or frumpy, or dated. After all, you carry it every day, and a blah bag can bring down your whole outfit. A stiff bag with a faux exotic print embossed onto the leather looks so dated. Invest in a status bag, if you can, or, for more affordable options that are still on-point stylewise, look to lines like Z Spoke from Zac Posen, Michael Kors, and Rebecca Minkoff. Avoid faux texture, tons of exterior pockets, and a boring shape in a boring color, like beige. For an investment piece, choose a black or camel bag in a strong, elegant shape with minimal detail and hardware.

4. Lower Your Vamp

High vamp shoes (those that cover more of the top of your foot) can be cool, or edgy, or funky, but they are rarely feminine or delicate. Furthermore, thin straps are prettier than thick straps, no matter what the Birkenstock wearers say. And while the new ugly shoes may, arguably, have a place in the wardrobe of a 20-year-old hipster, after a certain age, they look like comfort shoes – the very antithesis of cute. So skip the flatforms and shower slides, the Tevas and the Birkenstocks, and stick with classic but still comfortable options like thong sandals, ballet flats (square toes or pointy toes are both trendy), or gladiators. Call me old-fashioned, but I like pretty.

5. Lose the Platform Flops

Yes, this is closely related to #4, but I feel so strongly about this that I decided to give it its own category. Flip flops should be flat. Ditch the styles with the thick black rubber platform

soles and go for a classic pair of Havaianas. While you’re at it, toss any old flip flops with the black nylon straps and black soles. There are so many options that are equally affordable and comfortable, yet far more stylish.

6. Grow Your Hair Out

Some women immediately cut their hair after having kids. It’s like a rite of passage. 1. Have baby. 2. Buy yoga pants. 3. Chop hair off. But there is another way. You can have a baby. Wear cute clothes. And style your hair however you want it. Within reason. We all make tradeoffs. I decided keratin was too high-maintenance for my current lifestyle, and I embraced my curls, but I didn’t cut it off, because my hair looks better long. The key is to pick a pretty, flattering style that you can maintain, whether it’s long or short.

7. Ditch the Baggy Clothes

So, so, so many women think they are bigger than they are. They wear long baggy tees and slouchy sweatshirts in an attempt to hide it, which actually ends up making them look bigger. Next time you’re shopping, try the smaller size. Or, if you are used to wearing your clothes a little too snug, try the next size up. Clothes that don’t fit are unflattering, unattractive, and most of all, aging.

8. Upgrade your Denim

I find that there’s plenty of room for trendy, disposable denim in a girl’s life. The boyfriend jeans, the updated “mom” jeans, the high-waisted jeans — all these are of-the-moment trends and are best bought at discount prices, either at thrift stores, off-price stores, or fast fashion outlets like H&M. Don’t spend a lot on anything with a short shelf life. The dark-wash skinny jean is today’s answer to the boot cut: sleek, flattering to many, and versatile enough to dress up or down. It is the new classic,

|

37

and should be an investment piece. Plan to spend 2-3 times as much on these, and look for premium labels like Joe’s, AG, and Seven for All Mankind.

9. And your Bra

I know you think your tired, stretched-out, old bra is fine. It isn’t. Unless you struggle to fill in an A-cup, you need some support. The right bra will make absolutely everything you wear look a million times more expensive. You will look taller, slimmer, and chic-er. If you’re a full B-cup or higher, an underwire is required, not optional; and if you can only choose one bra, pick a seamless neutral style with convertible straps for maximum versatility. And if you don’t have a high-end department store in town, go bra shopping online at innovative retailers like Brayola, True & Co., and Third Love.

10. Pick a Fresh New Lipcolor

So we’ve heard how a toodark, too-matte lipstick can age you, and how the opposite – a nude, washed out lip – is also true. Your best pick? An ultra-hydrating color with a little bit of sheen in a midtoned flattering color. Whether you prefer the subtlety of a lip stain or the pop of a bolder shade, make sure the color complements your skin tone and brightens your complexion.

11. Groom your Brows

You know how you feel when they look straggly. Prevent that from happening by regular rearview mirror checks. I find that the angle of the rearview mirror, combined with natural

38 |

light, is the best place to pluck stray hairs as they arise and keep your brows neat and groomed. Keep a pair of tweezers in your glove compartment and touch up your brows whenever you have a spare moment! But never, of course, while actually driving.

12. Buy a Cute Pair of Sneakers

Even if you don’t work out. Especially if you don’t work out. Trainers are trendy right now, and just the thing for long days of family travel or hiking around an amusement park. Of course I’m not talking about your worn out running shoes here. Make them count. Make them cute! Then they’ll look like an intentional part of your look and not just an afterthought.

13. Use Sunscreen

Every day. Even when it’s gray. Use an antioxidantpacked formula on the face, neck, chest, ears and back of the neck every morning, and a body lotion with SPF on extremities. In sunnier months, switch your regular hand cream for a moisturizing sunscreen. If you want the protection without the greasiness, try a sunscreen stick, like the Age Shield Hand Balm from Rodan + Fields.

14. Wear Dishwashing Gloves

Not a glamorous subject, but we all wash dishes, and all that soap and hot water and scrubbing can take its toll, and make hands look older. I keep a hand-lotion pump next to my kitchen sink, and apply a quick

IS S U U .C O M /R O YA L R O U G E M A G A Z IN E | JUNE 2020

dab to the backs of hands before slipping on my girly dishwashing gloves. It’s like a little spa treatment! Okay, it’s nothing like a spa treatment, but it’s the best I can do, most days.

15. Find a Great Skincare Routine

As a beauty writer, I have never had a shortage of skincare products on hand, but all that choice can be confusing, to you and to your skin. You don’t need more products. You just need a few well-chosen ones that cover all of your bases. One way to do this is to pick your entire skincare routine from the same company, since the products are designed to work synergistically. And if you are just getting started, keep it simple: a gentle cleanser, an anti-aging cream with SPF for day, and an anti-aging cream for evening. After it becomes a habit, add more products as needed, like an eye cream or a mask. For more tips on choosing and using a skincare routine, check out my new book on the topic, filled with tips from the top skincare experts.

16. Get Botox

When it comes to treatments that can treat current wrinkles while preventing future ones, Botox tops the list. And it doesn’t have to mean frozen face. Get a recommendation from a trusted friend for a derm known for his minimalist approach. Just the tiniest bit will leave you line-free and relaxed-looking for months, and no one needs to know. So what are you waiting for?

17. Use a Skin-Firming Body Cream

I have been told that a cream can’t take the place of exercise, but who has time for that kind of negativity? I personally love the way firming creams leave skin taut, glowing, and, well, firm. I am always on the hunt for the perfect all-purpose body cream, one that makes you firm and glowy, with just a hint of color. Jergens BB cream checks all the boxes, and it’s so affordable! Aveeno, Nivea, and Palmer’s are also good options.

18. Curl Your Lashes

You might not think you need to curl your lashes. You do. Trust me. I have long, dark, curly-ish lashes and was convinced they didn’t need curling, until I tried it. Now I look back on those pre-lash-curling days and shudder. What a waste. Don’t let this happen to you. Curl your lashes, and you’ll be hooked by how bright and wide-awake it makes you look! The best curler is from Shu Uemura. Don’t waste your money on

any other.

19. Discover Coconut Oil

A long time ago, I read that Sophia Loren used to smooth olive oil on her body to keep it soft and youthful, and much as I wanted her skin, I balked. I didn’t want to smell like a salad. Fortunately, with coconut oil, there’s no odd smell. Only a mild slightly tropical aroma that I love. I have been using coconut oil on my face, body and hair for several years now, and I am obsessed. Addicted. My favorite brand is DeRigueur, which is pure, organic, and packaged in a tub so big you could practically soak in it. It absorbs quickly so you get smooth, hydrated skin, without greasiness. I use it to remove makeup, moisturize my dry legs, and calm the frizz in my hair. As promised, most of these 19 easy ways to look better instantly are small changes you can make today that will lead to a brighter, fresher, more stylish you tomorrow.

DEBT RECOVERY BY STEVE ISAACS

Getting into debt is easy, however, getting out of debt is the hard part of it all and in the end it will be well worth it Living debt-free is the greatest financial gift you can give yourself, but you need a plan and the motivation to stick to it. This 10-step plan helps you take control of your debt, starting right now and the first steps that you can do this month to get you going on the path to debt recovery, is to plan along these lines and then stick to that plan each month, until you are living debt free. Tackle the first six steps, then move onto the final four steps :-

1. Get your head right

Like any other hard thing in life, the first step is committing to the process for the right reasons and here are two good reasons and you also need to tell yourself, you won’t go back there :● When you owe money, you’re not just paying back capital. You’re being charged interest every month you are in debt – and with the hike in interest rates, interest is now costing you more than it did before. ● When you are in debt, you are robbing yourself of the money you could be using each month or saving for your future.

2.

Total up all your debts

Make a note of every debt you have, including your credit card, bank loans, retail accounts, car finance and home loan – even the R200 you owe your cousin! You will firstly need the right information iro the debt you owe, so if need be call the institution that you owe money to that will enable you to plan correctly (write down the answers) -then ask yourself these three questions./ How much is outstanding? ● What is the interest rate that I am paying? ● How long until the debt is paid back at this rate? ● Can I pay in more than the minimum monthly repayment and are there any penalties for doing so? 3. Decide on your method you will use for repaying the debt There are two tried-and-tested methods that deliver the best results for paying back your debts. They are: 4. Do a budget Write down all your monthly expenses, including rent, medical aid, insurance, school fees, food, transport, entertainment, clothes and so on. Then look for every opportunity you have to tighten your belt. Could you buy yourself lunch at the office less often? Could you share a ride into work with someone and halve your petrol costs? How much could you cut back on entertainment? Could you buy cheaper food at the supermarket? If you find that you are already stretched to the limit of your budget, consider ways to earn extra income – like renting out a room in your home, or selling baked goods to colleagues at work. Take or make any opportunity you can to save money or earn a little extra.

5

. Keep track of it all

At month-end, put your plan into action. Pay back the minimum instalment on all Put all of this information into your accounts. Then, put any additional an Excel Spreadsheet or a wall chart, or just in a notebook. Keep money into the debt with the smallest outstanding balance or the highest track of each lender, amount owing and each monthly instalment. Every time you interest rate – depending on whether you have opted for the snowball or avalanche make a payment, update each of these method. Congratulations, you have taken blocks. the first step towards financial freedom! 6. Make the first round of payments under Now keep on going, every month. your debt-busting plan

42 |

IS S U U .C O M /R O YA L R O U G E M A G A Z IN E | JUNE 2020

And now follow the next 4 steps in the months to follow 7. Kill your lines of credit As soon as those loan balances start looking healthier, you will be tempted to spend on credit again. Don’t allow yourself that temptation, remember all your hard work paying these debts back. And as you finish paying each debt, close the account. Be very disciplined about this. If you are still thinking “but…” then you are not fully

committed to the process and you will end up right back where you started. 8. Consider overpaying on your asset finance as well Your home loan and car finance would probably come out last on the additional repayment list, whether you were using the snowball method or the avalanche method. These debts are slightly different to the others, because they are funding assets and generally have low

9. Consider starting to save The interest you earn on saving is almost always less than the interest you are charged on credit. This means that if you are saving while still paying back credit, you are losing money. The most financially sound approach to take is to use all your extra money to get out of debt first and only then start saving. However, in practice, this doesn’t always make sense. For one thing, people tend to need the security blanket of having savings, even if they are paying back debt. For another, you might find that you need to spend money while you are paying back debt, and if you don’t have savings, you’ll have to go into even more debt and start the cycle over again. So go ahead and save if you have the budget to do so, but don’t forget that getting rid of debt is your priority.

COVID-19 interest rates. This is not to say that you shouldn’t try to reduce or get rid of them – you absolutely should – but that you don’t need to prioritise early settlement to quite the same extent as you have with all your other lines of credit. That said, it’s astonishing how quickly you can reduce the term of your home loan and the interest you pay if you can pay just a little bit extra each month.

10. Stay debt free, for good Paying back outstanding debt is a gruelling process. But it feels great once it’s done. Whatever you do, don’t start the cycle over again. If you need something, it's better to save for it than to go into credit. Try to adopt a policy of going without, rather than spending money you don't have. Congratulations on committing to getting out of debt and to living that way in future, being debt free. You’re in this for the long haul, but it will be worth it in the end. NOTE: If you have taken on more debt than you can afford to pay back using these methods, then you may have to consider debt counselling, as those people have way more experience & expertise in helping people recover from debt. Don't Use Your Phone as an Alarm Clock

This one's tricky, right? Even though you haven't had one in years, actual alarm clocks do still exist—and getting one could actually help you get a better sleep. Since the blue light from cell phones can disrupt your sleep cycle, it's best to keep it far away from your bed. In fact, leave it in another room. Then once you wake up after a peaceful night of shuteye, you can get up and grab it.

Don't Shop Hungry

You've probably heard this a billion times, but it still rings true: When you go the supermarket starving, you're going to leave with a bunch of items you don't need—particularly very unhealthy ones. The next time you go shopping, make sure you're satiated and you'll wind up with things that actually deserve a spot in your fridge.

Skip Out on Take-Out

Sure, it's easy ordering your food all the time—but it's doing nothing for your well-being. When you get take-out, it's impossible to know which sneaky ingredients are lurking in your food. For all you know, there could be 500 calories of oil alone. Instead, learn how to make your own meals and it will greatly benefit your health.

Cuddle with Your Significant Other

One super easy way to better your health? Do a whole lot of cuddling. Because of the release of oxytocin in your body that comes from that lovey-dovey human contact, you'll get an instant boost of happiness, which helps out your mental health.

Don't Be Afraid to Lift Weights

Women tend to avoid lifting weights in fear of getting bulky—but bulkiness is not always the result. Instead, you can tone up, developing muscles that not only look great but also keep your body going strong—and on top of that, it's also a great way to increase your energy levels and keep your body feeling (and looking!) young, says the Cleveland Clinic.Sure, they're uncomfortable—but they could be life-saving.

Don't Skip Your Yearly Ob-Gyn Appointment Every woman knows that going to the ob-gyn is no fun: No one gets excited for that visit. But, it's important: By making sure you hit up your yearly appointment, you can make sure you stay as healthy as you can thanks to the breast exams, pelvic exams, and pap smears. Sure, they're uncomfortable—but they could be life-saving.

Blast the Tunes LIFESTYLE Putting on your favourite playlist every morning can do your health some good. According to a 2013 study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology, those tunes not only up your energy levels and get you excited about the day, but they also make you feel happy—and help you stay healthy in the process.

Wear Something Citrusy Your mood has a big role in your health, and one instant way to make yourself feel a little happier and more energized is by spritzing on a citrus perfume. Don't Always Skip

Dessert

People think in order to be healthy they always have to pass up on dessert, but that's not the case. You don't have to cut something you love out of your diet as long as you can find moderation—and if that just so happens to be eating a few bites of ice cream after dinner occasionally, that's totally fine. Instead of forbidding yourself and eventually binging, you'll know you can have it anytime you want—and probably want it less because of that.

Don't Sit Too Much During the Day If you have a desk job, it's not uncommon to plop down in your seat and stay there most of the day. But there's a reason to make it a point to get on your feet. Stretching and walking around gets your blood flowing, and that leads to making you feel more energized. Plus, on top of that, your brain also gets a nice boost, making you more creative and be able to think more clearly.

Keep a Gratitude Journal In your mind, you probably know what you're grateful for—but writing it down can do wonders for your mental health. Spend five minutes every night jotting down things you're thankful for in a journal as well as the things you loved most about the day. It will remind you just how great your life is—and give you a major mood boost.

Start Using Daily Aff irmations Instead of putting yourself down, start focusing on bringing yourself up. And a great place to start is by using daily affirmations. Before you head out the door in the morning, give yourself a pep-talk: Say "you're beautiful," "you're powerful," or "you can do this" out loud to yourself in the mirror. It might feel silly, but it will give you a boost.

Practice Self-Care

Some people might think self-care is selfish, but that's the furthest thing from the truth. It's so easy to get caught up in the day to day and forget to take time to focus on yourself and your mental and physical health, but it can make such a huge difference on your well-being. Spend time every day doing something for yourself—even if it's just 20 minutes—to live a happier, less stressful life.

Take Baths Often While showers are a quick and easy way to get clean, there's nothing more relaxing than slowing down and enjoying a nice warm and soothing bath. With the help of some candles and a fizzy bath bomb, that peaceful soak will calm your nerves and help get rid of stress and anxiety. JUNE 2020 | IS S U U .C O M /R O YA L R O U G E M A G A Z IN E
