THE HISTORY OF PAPER

“ THE FIRST PAPER WAS MADE BY RECYCLING! “ Over the years, paper has become an indispensable product in the daily lives of many people, like newspapers, toilet paper, books, magazines and works of art. But, the history of paper started many years ago. Even before paper came into existence, people used caves and other natural surfaces to engrave and paint symbols, like in the caves of Lascaux in France. Papyrus, the first paper The ancient Egyptians used a surface called papyrus to write down hieroglyphs. They created this writing material by overlapping thin stems of the papyrus plant and pressing them together. Papyrus spread to different countries and became more and more popular, but due to the popularity and limited availability (the papyrus plant primarily grew along

8

the Nile in Egypt), an alternative had to be found. People started using parchment, a writing material made from animal skin. This surface was far more available than papyrus and was, for example, used in the Middle Ages by monks to make handwritten books for the nobles.

Pulp is a mushy substance created from mixing fibres with water, which is one of the most important ingredients in the papermaking process.

Recycling paper started more than 2000 years ago According to many sources, T’sai Lun is the inventor of paper as we know it today. He discovered than that paper can be created by mixing water with fibres of different products, such as tree bark, old rags and fishnets, and allowing it to dry. So, the first paper was made by recycling! China had kept this papermaking technique a secret for a long time, but the technique was spread to the Middle East, probably by the Arabs who imprisoned Chinese war soldiers. Paper replaced papyrus and parchment because it was cheaper and easier to create. Through the north of Africa and the south of Spain, this method of creating handmade paper came to Europe. The first paper machine After this papermaking method came to Europe, several people tried to develop a papermaking machine that could replace manual labour. The Frenchman Nicolas-Louis Robert came up with the first concept for a paper machine but forwarded it to his brother-in-law in England. The first successful paper production machine was developed there in 1803, by Henry and Sealy Fourdrinier. The design of the first successful paper production machine is often still used in today’s papermaking machines, and is still called a Fourdrinier.

ROYAL TALENS & RECYCLING

In order to limit the impact on the environment, when developing our products, we carefully examine ways of avoiding unnecessary packaging materials and of reducing production waste as much as possible. We use paper and wood with the FSC® quality mark, recycled materials and glass instead of plastic as much as possible.

FACTS ABOUT PAPER

1.

You can’t double fold a sheet of paper more than 7 times.

Try it yourself!

3. 5.

Emails are not CO2 neutral. The emission of 20 e-mails per day for a year, is equivalent to approximately 1000 kilometers of driving.

Most of our paper is vegan friendly. No animals were being harmed as we mainly use plant-based and synthetic materials. Only our Rembrandt 100% cotton water colour paper is made with gelatine-based glue.

12

2. 4. 6.

Paper can be recycled up to five to seven times, because then the fibers will become too short to create a new paper.

Did you know that banknotes are not made from wood, but from a combination of linen and cotton?

Wasps build nests from paper: they chew on reeds or wood until a porridge forms. The dried porridge eventually becomes paper.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Product specialist COOS VAN WAAS As a product specialist, Coos van Waas has been involved in the development of the paper range for nearly four decades. “It was even one of my first responsibilities when I started with Royal Talens, so I’ve been working together with artists to approve the paper we develop for 38 years.” Throughout those years, he conducted extensive research into paper in all its facets and visited many paper production facilities. “They sometimes refer to me jokingly as the paper encyclopedia”. What does paper development entail? We want to offer the full range of supplies for artists, which is why Royal Talens began selling paper so many years ago. Paper is an essential material for many techniques, which is why we always search for the best quality when developing new paper products. After all, the foundation has a significant impact on the result of your artwork; the interaction between paper and pigment needs to be optimal. Various properties determine the quality of the paper, such as the type and quality of the fibres, how fine these fibres have been ground, the internal and external adhesion, the structure and the paper’s fibre density. In watercolour techniques, for example, it is crucial that the paint pigments remain on the paper for optimum impact. Additionally, the fibres of the paper must not come loose due to friction of the brush and the excessive moisture of watercolours. In this way, we determine the perfect properties for each method. Using microscopic testing, we can analyse the composition of new paper and the quality of the paper fibres down to the smallest detail. Alongside innovative measurement instruments, we also continue to test our paper using traditional methods: by hand. With sketching paper, for example, fibre density is a key indication of quality and today we still test this extensively using the age-old graphite pencil and the eraser. The faster the fibres are rubbed off by the eraser, the poorer the quality. To improve the functional quality of the paper, additional base materials are sometimes added during the production process, such as calcium carbonate. This absorbs air-borne acidifying compounds to prevent these from damaging the paper fibres. This additive buffers the paper, guaranteeing optimum longevity. Along with the calcium carbonate, the use of acid-free fibres also improves durability. Paper containing acidic cellulose and materials eventually becomes self-destructive, which is absolutely not what we want to provide to artists. This is why we always use the highest quality of acid-free cellulose. The attention we invest in searching for the right paper quality ensures that our end users can create artwork without worries and can enjoy the result for years to come.

WATERCOLOUR PAPER

From entry-level quality to professional watercolour paper, Royal Talens has the perfect paper for every artist. Each brand offers paper that fits in perfectly with this line. Careful thought has been put into technique, durability and usage. Available in all shapes and sizes From postcard size to a maximum size of A3. In addition to the usual white watercolour paper, Royal Talens also offers the world’s first ever black watercolour paper included in the Van Gogh and Rembrandt brands. Specialty paints and more opaque watercolour paints work beautifully on this black background. 100% cotton watercolour paper can be found in the professional lines. One of the great advantages of cotton is that it is strong and does not yellow. This paper ensures that the quality of the work is preserved over the long-term. Features of the paper Watercolour is a technique that is typically practised on paper. Your paper is the very foundation of your work and that is why it is important for it to meet certain quality requirements. The paper you choose is also partly personal preference. Do you work with a lot of water?

14

Then a paper block glued on four sides is recommended. This prevents the paper from bulging. Also, ‘grammage’, the weight of your paper, is important here. The thicker your paper, the more water it can hold. There are different sizes and structures. The size you choose is entirely up to you. The structure is too, of course, but please note that the coarser your surface, the more paint pigment will accumulate in the dimples of the paper. This results in a coarser result. Watercolour paper is characterised by the glue used inside the paper as well as on its surface. This glue largely determines the expressive quality of the paint. Gluing is necessary to prevent the paint from seeping through and to help the colour remain on the paper. This allows sunlight to pass through the transparent paint and reflect off the white background, allowing the colours to sparkle. All of the glues in the Royal Talens range have a synthetic base and are therefore vegan, except for Rembrandt 100% cotton watercolour paper.

Two watercolour techniques explained The wet in wet technique: after creating a wet surface, you can continue working with your watercolour brush. The paint will flow over your paper. This allows you to produce areas of colour with less defined edges. Control of the paint is also reduced. Because the white of the paper is traditionally used in place of white watercolour paint, you should leave any white parts open on your paper. This can prove quite difficult when using the wet in wet technique, but there is one tool that can help: Liquid Masking Film, a natural liquid rubber that repels water and paint after drying. You can easily remove this film after drying the paint, making the colour of your paper visible again. The dry technique: working with watercolours on a dry surface. This technique allows you to work in more detail.

HOW TO USE

You can combine multiple techniques in the same work. Taking care of your paper Paper is a fragile medium and should be well cared for, both while working and after your artwork is finished. Watercolours can be varnished. In addition to providing a protective layer, the varnish can also add a bit of shine to your work. Varnish helps you protect your work from moisture and dirt. You can also choose not to varnish your work, and instead place it in a frame with UV-resistant glass. If you plan to varnish your work, use the Talens 680 Protecting Spray, which prevents the paint from smearing, as watercolour paint is not waterproof. If you are going to work with a lot of water, it is wise to add a small amount of Talens 008 Arabic Gum to preserve your paint film.

Paper needs to be free of grease if you want the watercolour paint to adhere well. With Talens 051 Ox Gall you can create a grease-free surface, optimising the adhesive properties of your watercolours. Picture left: Beading paint on greasy fingerprint. Picture right: Using Ox Gall.

ACRYLIC PAPER

Acrylic paper is widely used when working on location and for experimenting with new applications. Carrying paper is a lot easier than carrying a canvas, and working with paper also makes it possible to cut out sections, frame them or attach them to something else. Acrylic paint contains water and as the acrylic paint dries, water evaporates from the paint, leaving you with less volume. To prevent the paper from warping during the drying process, acrylic paper usually has a high grammage. Acrylic paper can also incorporate different structures. Some acrylic paper has a canvas structure, while other acrylic paper has a fine or medium structure. A fine structure is more suitable for detailed work and fine lines. Acrylic paper is suitable for any acrylic-based product.

18

How to use A block of acrylic paper is easy to take along with you, and your work can also be easily stored afterwards. You can paint on paper in the same way you do on canvas. If you would then like to hang your work on the wall, it can easily be framed. Taking care of your paper You can varnish acrylic paper. This is possible in the gloss level of your choice: matt, satin, glossy or high gloss.

OIL PAPER

Royal Talens has been creating oil paint for artists around the world since 1899. It has also been producing paper that helps release the full potential of this paint. Years of experience and craftsmanship have guided us to the materials we use today.

Royal Talens offers a variety of quality options for oil paper. from entry-level quality to oil paper for professional artists. Oil paper is easy to take with you for sketching in oil paint. Another benefit of using oil paper is that you can cut out pieces to frame or to use in collages, for example. Oil paper has the same structure as a canvas, which gives it the same feel as working on canvas. A special external glue applied on the paper prevents the oil from soaking through the paper. How to use The paper is prepared, so you can work on it immediately. If necessary, a layer of (coloured) gesso can be applied to the paper. Gesso adds grip to the oil paint and it can be coloured by mixing it with a small amount of acrylic paint.

20

Acrylic does not provide good grip for oil paint, so the ratio of acrylic to gesso always has to strongly favour the gesso. Taking care of your paper/artwork Just like working on canvas, a varnish can be applied after the work has completely dried (9-12 months). In the interim (after drying for about 6-9 months), it is possible to revive any discoloured areas using the Talens 004 Retouching Varnish. When working with thick layers of paint, it is wise to eventually glue the paper onto a hard surface. Oil paint becomes harder over time. On a firm surface, the paint has less chance of cracking (craquelure).

DRAWING AND SKETCHING PAPER

For drawing and sketching paper, it is important to know which techniques will be used on the paper. For example, smooth paper works well for creating clean lines. When working with colour and/or graphite pencils, having a bit of structure on the paper is recommended. This allows pigments to remain in the small dimples present on the paper. Sketches are best preserved on acid-free paper - just look at the sketches by the artist Rembrandt! This paper is suitable for pencils, coloured pencils and charcoal. The difference between sketching paper and drawing paper is that sketching paper is often lightweight and intended for sketching and experimenting. Drawing paper is of higher quality and is usually heavier than sketching paper. It is used to create works that need to be preserved for a long time. How to use Sketching paper often comes in thick blocks. Since it is for sketching, you do not necessarily need high grammage or 100% cotton. The surface of the paper is important: it has to be nice to work with.

24

A light structure is recommended so that the pencil has some grip on the paper, helping to improve colour transfer. The paper has to have a certain strength so that erasing does not become an issue. Drawing paper is of a higher quality for more serious work. Typically, drawing paper has a higher grammage. Taking care of your paper/artwork It is best to keep your drawings in a folder or drawer so that little to no light can come in, which can help prevent yellowing.

PASTEL PAPER

Royal Talens offers a wide range of pastels that can be combined with the wealth of pastel paper colours on offer. To get the most out of the pastel colour attributes, the colour of the paper must be carefully chosen. It can capture, enhance or soften the colours in the work. The paper can become part of the work. A coloured background also has the advantage that the pastel painting does not have to be completely ‘filled in’. The structure of the paper is also important. Pastel will fall directly from the paper if it has no grip and will not give off any colour if there is too little resistance from the paper. If the structure of the paper is ‘full’, Talens Pastel fixative (061 and 064) can be used. This gives more structure, allowing the next layer to adhere. This paper is suitable for soft pastels and carré pastels, charcoal, pencils and chalk.

Taking care of your paper/artwork Because a pastel drawing is fragile, you can also fix it once the work is finished. This is possible using Talens Pastel fixative (061 and 064). The colour layers and particles will adhere to each other and to the surface and will last longer.

Rembrandt - Pastel Paper Blocks Rembrandt paper has been specially designed for the professional painter. It is acid-free which ensures the work stays in good condition for many years. Rembrandt pastel paper is available in various colours, divided in light and dark colour pads. Item no

PAPER GLOSSARY ACID-FREE PAPER The acid has been extracted from the paper fibres, allowing the paper to be stored for a long time without yellowing/ageing. CELLULOSE Purified wood fibres. COTTON Fibres that are derived from the cotton plant. EXTERNAL GLUING This is a special coating on the paper. It ensures that the paint cannot seep through the fibres of the paper. For example, external gluing ensures that oil does not soak through the paper when using oil paper, and that with watercolour paper, the pigments do not seep down deeply into the paper, but instead are able to adhere to the paper. FIBRES Paper is a thin material produced by pressing together moist and ctton fibres of cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses, which are then dried into flexible sheets. FOUR-SIDED GLUING Paper that is glued on four sides can be used with water. Because all four of the sides are glued, the paper will not warp. Once the paint has dried, you can remove the sheet. There is always a small part that is not glued, so in this case you can use a palette knife under the paper to cut the work loose along the glued edges. The sheet underneath will be clean and ready to use. FOURDRINIER The first successful paper production machine developed in 1803, by Henry and Sealy Fourdrinier. The design of the first successful paper production machine is still often used in today’s papermaking machines and is still called a Fourdrinier.

LIGNIN-FREE If paper is lignin-free, then that means the lignin has been removed from the wood fibres, which will prevent the paper from yellowing. ONE-SIDED GLUING The paper block is glued on one side. This allows you to easily remove your paper from the block. PAPER SURFACE (GRAIN) Every paper has a structure/grain. This will be more visible or tangible in one type of paper than in another. It depends on whether the paper has a coarse, medium or fine structure/grain. PULP Pulp is a mushy substance created from mixing fibres with water, which is one of the most important ingredients in the papermaking process. QUALITY The quality is determined by the internal and external gluing, the type of fibres and the grammage of the paper. RECYCLED PAPER Recycled paper is made with recycled fibers, this is made from reprocessing waste paper. Postconsumer waste refers to paper that was recovered after actually being used by a consumer and discarded. WEIGHT (GRAMMAGE) The weight of the paper expressed in grams per m². Heavier paper (for example 300 g/m²) generally warps less quickly when it comes to techniques that use a lot of water.

FSC® QUALITY MARK Forest Stewardship Council®. This organisation sets global standards for responsible forest management, carefully considering the interests of people, the environment and the economy. INTERNAL GLUING This is the glue that is mixed with the paper pulp. It ensures the strength of the paper.

SUSTAINABILITY Sustainable production at Royal Talens goes beyond making safe, environmentally conscious choices for responsible components and meticulous waste separation. It also means taking care of the environment and our surroundings. For this reason, the Royal Talens range of paper blocks is largely made of wood fibres that come from responsibly grown wood that bears the FSC® quality mark. Our other wood products such as easels, stretched canvases, brushes and paint and pencil boxes are also being increasingly produced with responsibly grown wood that bears the FSC® quality mark. This wood complies with the guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council®. This organisation sets global standards for responsible forest management, carefully considering the interests of people, the environment and the economy.

Worldwide support The FSC® label is supported worldwide by all major environmental and development organisations, unions and international business. FSC® is the only organisation with a consistent independent standard and certification system that can be applied worldwide for all types of forests and plantations. Being awarded the quality mark is no easy process. Obtaining the quality mark means meeting strict criteria and implementing them throughout the organisation. Every year, Royal Talens undergoes an assessment by the FSC® accredited certification body as to whether our working methods are in line with the standards.
