Welcome to RPDS I am pleased to welcome you to Riverside Presbyterian Day School. At Riverside, we passionately believe in our mission to educate the mind, nurture the spirit, and foster the development of the whole child. Our dynamic educational program reflects this commitment and is designed to build knowledgeable, well-rounded, critical thinking individuals who respect the differences of others in preparation for life in a global community. Our teaching and learning community understands that a high quality education cannot come exclusively from the transmission of facts from teachers to students, but must be comprised of an integrated and interactive approach, in which instruction focuses on the attainment of knowledge through discovery and reflection. To achieve this, we employ various methods of instruction in order to cultivate the intellect and develop ideas and skills required for lifelong learning and citizenship. Our students thrive when they are presented with meaningful, engaging lessons that challenge them to question, explore, analyze, and present their newly acquired knowledge. At RPDS, we believe children’s educational experiences should be memorable, rewarding, and point them in the direction of their dreams. I welcome you to explore our website to learn about our programs and curriculum and how your child can grow in knowledge, faith, and experience as he or she joyfully engages with other students and faculty. Sincerely,
Ben Ketchum Head of School

Our Mission The mission of Riverside Presbyterian Day School is to educate the mind, nurture the spirit, and foster the development of the whole child. In achieving this mission, Riverside Presbyterian Day School seeks to: • Offer a balanced, challenging academic program which stimulates each child’s intellectual curiosity and the desire for lifelong learning; • Affirm the teachings of the Christian faith and nurture an awareness of God’s unconditional love for every child; • Encourage the development of self-esteem and confidence by recognizing the unique potential and worth of each individual; and • Provide a school climate which promotes respect for the values of our democratic society and fosters concerned and responsible citizenship.
Our Philosophy Riverside Presbyterian Day School provides students with a carefully planned academic program within a supportive environment in which the concepts of respect for the individual, community, and Christian values are promoted. Riverside recognizes that each child is an individual and gears teaching strategies to ensure that children will experience success at their own level of learning. Students are challenged to rise to higher goals and achievement through the use of a curriculum that addresses a variety of learning styles and exposes children to rich literature, problem solving situations, and cooperative learning strategies. Different levels of academic ability, social development, and learning styles are respected and used to design and implement curriculum. A comprehensive curriculum guide built around a challenging academic program includes subject matter in the academic areas, the arts, physical education, guidance, Bible instruction, and technology. The curriculum inspires children to become lifelong learners and equips them with the skills necessary to adapt to an ever-changing world.

RPDS At-A-Glance At its heart, Riverside Presbyterian Day School is a community rooted in faith and committed to providing a challenging academic curriculum while remaining sensitive to the development of the whole child.

The Riverside Way The Riverside Way is composed of character traits that can be seen daily throughout our campus. They are used by our faculty, staff, students, and parents. Using the RPDS acronym, The Riverside Way stands for Respectful, Responsible, Persevere, praise, Dependable, Dedicated, Seek, and Serve. The Riverside Way is more than eight words. It’s about the way we carry ourselves in the classrooms, the hallway, in Chapel, on the playground, and in the community. It’s the way we care about those inside and outside our campus. And it’s the way we want others to care about us. The Riverside Way is about showing God’s love through our actions and putting others before ourselves.
Our Commitment to Diversity At Riverside Presbyterian Day School, we believe that embracing inclusivity and belonging enriches our school community and prepares our children for a global, multicultural world. The RPDS community loves and respects all human beings in a manner consistent with our school mission. Each family completes and contributes to the body of Riverside. We strive to foster relationships by encouraging our school community to appreciate, understand, and learn from others, thus demonstrating God’s unconditional love. To achieve this commitment, RPDS seeks to enrich each child’s learning experience by being geographically, economically, and culturally diverse. We are dedicated to providing an embracing, inclusive and welcoming community for all. At RPDS, our commitment to diversity demonstrates God’s unconditional love to all people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, learning style, religion, and/or socioeconomic status. Our community provides opportunities for the entire school community to explore, experience, appreciate, and discover the uniqueness of each individual. RPDS empowers students through the building of strong foundations to accept people from diverse backgrounds and provides an educational environment that fosters a child’s desire to lead a life honoring a knowledge of and respect for all individuals. One tangible outgrowth of fostering such knowledge and respect is that RPDS students are encouraged to think beyond themselves and motivated to engage their hearts and hands in service to others.
6
Core Curriculum Riverside offers a broad and enriching curriculum to which children respond with the highest academic achievement. Our curriculum intentionally spirals, and we are fortunate to have highly trained teachers to deliver this exceptional learning to our children.
Literacy •
•
Literacy incorporates both the reading and writing portion of our lower school curriculum. It involves interactive read alouds, reading groups, and independent reading. Infused into reading is deep and expressive creative writing. Handwriting is taught from PreK 3 through 3rd grade, culminating in cursive writing. Language Arts is our reading and writing curriculum in upper school. Here children read to learn through rich novel-based reading. Grammar is also part of Language Arts. Students continue to develop and hone their writing skills in a variety of ways.
Singapore Math
Dimensions, which is a component of Singapore Math, is taught from PreK 4 through 6th Grade. This curriculum uses the concrete to pictorial to abstract approach. Dimensions is strategic in its methodology and leads to higher algebraic thinking and quantitative reasoning.
History & Global Studies
Science and Social Studies are taught throughout the week as part of Riverside’s curriculum. Some of the many units of studies include Jacksonville history, American history, Ancient Civilization, Regions of the United States, Florida History, and more.
Science
7
Our Kindergarten through 6th Grade science classes use the Amplify Science curriculum developed out of The Lawrence Hall of Science at UC - Berkeley. Amplify Science is a multimodal, hands-on program designed to help educators create the next generation of citizens who are curious, skeptical, and evidence-based thinkers. The pedagogy is project-based, in which students explore and solve authentic problems. This curriculum inspires students to read, write, and argue like scientists in order to gain a better understanding of the world.
Enriched Curriculum The enrichment curriculum at Riverside Presbyterian Day School includes Art, Drama, Foreign Language, Health & Wellness, Music, Musical Performance, Spiritual Formation, and STEAM. Each enrichment subject is taught by a teacher highly trained and passionate in his or her area of expertise. The enrichment curriculum is designed to deepen and broaden children’s thinking in ways that foster creativity, physicality, lifelong learning, and happiness, thus supporting the development of the whole child.
Steam In STEAM, children are exposed to concepts from Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. In this student-centered environment, students take charge of their own learning by actively problem solving, working in groups, persevering, creating, and having fun. The RPDS makerspace is home to a variety of educational robots, multitudes of circuitry technology, 3D printers, and a laser cutter, as well as tools for wood crafting, textiles, paper craft, art supplies, and miscellaneous recyclables just waiting for a child’s imagination to transform them into something spectacular.
Foreign Language SPANISH - PreK 3 - 3rd Grade students acquire practical vocabulary and useful Spanish skills through total physical response (TPR), comprehensive pictorial system, authentic activities, and partial immersion experiences. By the end of 3rd Grade, students are able to communicate effortlessly in Spanish on topics such as the weather, feelings, and telling time. The curriculum for the Spanish I program in 4th - 6th Grade exceeds common core standards in the areas of writing, reading, listening, and speaking. CHINESE - At RPDS, we offer three levels of Mandarin Chinese for 4th - 6th Grade students. A key component to the success of the Mandarin Chinese curriculum is that the courses are cumulative. Having a cumulative curriculum helps create a more lasting retention.
Visual Arts The RPDS Art program provides a robust foundation for budding artists. The underlying premise is naturally conveyed that every child is an artist. The curriculum is designed to celebrate developmental stages as students explore and experiment with expressing themselves through visual art. As they embark on a journey through Art, students encounter a variety of media to create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional masterpieces. Art history is creatively interwoven throughout the projects. Art embraces technology, providing opportunities for computer graphics as well as a digital portfolio for every student.
Music & Performance RPDS is proud to showcase our students’ musical and dramatic talents in grade level productions throughout the year, including traditional Christmas programs, musicals, Chapel performances, and community music outreach opportunities. Children are given frequent opportunities to share their talents with their classmates, teachers, and families during Grand Instrument Week.

Riverside in the Afternoon (RITA) Before and after an academic school day, RPDS is here for your child with Riverside in the Afternoon, often referred to by its acronym, RITA. The extended day programming opens its doors at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m. in the evening on regular school days. An excellent after-school program is the perfect complement to investing in an excellent education. At Riverside, we value every moment we have to equip our students with the foundations of academic and lifelong success, and our after-school program is no exception. An effective after-school program must be strategic, fun, and age-appropriate. We realize that your child has already spent many hours learning, so we must be creative in encouraging them to learn and play for a few more hours. Many of our RITA employees are working towards becoming credentialed teachers or working toward a college degree, and some are experienced teachers. RITA employees maintain the same active learning and engaging activities with our students. The entire staff is First Aid and CPR trained. As the school day concludes and the transition to RITA begins, students may also participate in our Afternoon Academies program. There are a variety of activities from which to choose, all tailored to enrich each child’s afternoon experience at RPDS. These activities are varied among age groups, and offerings rotate throughout the school year.

• Splitting Tuition/Fees: Requests to have the responsibility for the payment of all tuition/fees divided between responsible parties are honored when this split is clearly indicated on the enrollment contract AND BOTH PARTIES HAVE SIGNED an agreement noting the same percentages.
RITA Schedule & Fees The Riverside in the Afternoon (RITA) program is designed to be a relaxed environment, which provides students variety within the care offered during after-school hours. Art, games, crafts, homework time, and outdoor play are some of the activities provided by RITA. RITA may be utilized on a “drop-in” basis; however, this is the most expensive way to participate. RPDS recommends taking advantage of the monthly plan for the RITA program. All RITA fees are added to a parent’s Smart Tuition account.

Financial Assistance Philosophy & Policy
All financial assistance awards are based upon each family’s demonstrated financial need. These awards cover a broad range of needs which enhance the socioeconomic diversity of our student body. Riverside Presbyterian Day School admits students of any race, creed, color, sex, or national origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The distribution of awards will adhere to NAIS principles of Good Practice for Financial Aid with special attention to fairness, equity, and confidentiality. • Continued eligibility for financial assistance is based primarily on a family’s ongoing demonstrated need for funds. Families must re-apply for financial assistance each year. • If a student receives a grant from an outside funding source, Step Up for example, these additional funds will be considered part of the student’s financial assistance award and should be disclosed to RPDS as soon as possible. • All information received by the Financial Assistance Committee is held in the strictest of confidence. When financial assistance information is disclosed, those receiving the information are reminded to safeguard the confidentiality of the information. • No financial assistance award can be made for an upcoming school year until a family’s current school year balance has been paid. • In most cases, the Financial Assistance Committee will make an award only after considering the financial resources of both parents, but we do look at each situation on a case-by-case basis, and we make every effort to be sensitive to particular family circumstances when finalizing an award.
15
Affording Riverside All qualified students desiring an RPDS education deserve the opportunity to receive an excellent education. Financial assistance is one way we strengthen the economic and social diversity of Riverside Presbyterian Day School. Therefore, we are dedicated to providing need-based tuition assistance to families. Each year, approximately 20% of our students receive some level of financial support. Financial Assistance Eligibility The Financial Assistance Committee relies upon information supplied by families to FAST, our need analysis provider. In computing the amount of the award, Riverside considers factors such as family size, income, expenses, assets and liabilities, and spending priorities. Each year, families applying for financial assistance must submit all required information, including tax documentation. The most important aspect of the financial assistance process is meeting the deadlines. Parents may begin the FAST online application for the 2022-2023 school year after November 1, 2021. This application will remain open throughout the 2022-23 school year. The online submission deadline for all student applications is February 15, 2022. REQUIRED TWO-STEP PROCESS: 1. FAST online application ($48 Application Fee) 2. Tax Documentation (2021) Completed applications, including submission of ALL tax documentation, are required prior to review by the Financial Assistance Committee. Upload or mail signed copies of your 2020 Federal Income Tax Return (1040), including all schedules and W-2/1099 forms to FAST no later than February 15, 2022. The mailing address for FAST is: Independent School Management Attn: FAST Processing 1316 N. Union Street Wilmington, DE 19806 To gain the maximum award, it is important that families meet all deadlines, including having current taxes verified. The Financial Assistance Committee determines financial awards and holds all information strictly confidential. Failure to meet the deadlines jeopardizes your opportunity for financial assistance. We cannot guarantee funds will be available after the deadline. Families seeking tuition assistance after February 15, 2022 will receive consideration based upon available funds. If you have any questions, or need additional information, please contact the Admission Office at 904.353.3459.
