A Celebration of Wine A Benefit For Arts & Education

Wine Auction

CO - CHAIRS

Sarah Woodward & Carol Swig

Art is about deconstructing walls and breaking the rules... Art challenges us to dig a little deeper within ourselves and the world around us... When we moved to the Wood River Valley, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts welcomed the two of us and gave us a deeper sense of community. This inspired us to get involved with the Center and to help further their mission of making art and art education available to every member of this valley. Art is our legacy... Let's raise our glasses to toast the past, present and future successes of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

Cheers!!

Carol M. Swig and Sarah Woodward

Dear Wine Auction Friends, Welcome to the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction. Thank you for being a part of this special tradition. This year we honor our friend and supporter, Jack Thornton for his magnificent contributions to The Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Jack embodied the spirit of the Wine Auction, he loved the event and reveled in the joy of giving back. By being with us this weekend and supporting The Center’s efforts through the Wine Auction, you honor Jack’s spirit and his robust enthusiasm for this event. It is our pleasure to host you in the mountains of Idaho for this important fundraiser. Your participation as an attendee, as a vintner or chef, as a dinner host, a sponsor or as a volunteer adds to the success of our work and the growth of this remarkable community. Your contribution ensures that arts and culture are integral in the lives of the youth in this valley.

Art is...inspiration.

The Center reaffirmed its commitment to arts education last year and we are dedicated to honoring and enhancing that commitment. National studies indicate that arts education increases graduation rates. We are proud to report that the Blaine Country School District has seen an increase in its graduation rate for a third consecutive year. The Center’s K-12 Arts Education programs contribute significantly to these positive developments in our community, and are only made possible through your support. Our internal impact report reflects that our total student reach this year is 7,196 students. Simply put, we see every student in the Wood River Valley multiple times a year. The creative expression and active engagement that The Center cultivates is a powerful tool for these young people and it will support them as they move beyond this community and into their futures. Have a wonderful time this weekend and rest assured that your support is opening worlds to our youth and inspiring creative confidence for a new group of leaders. I encourage you to raise your paddle… Jack always did… with a big smile on his face!

With gratitude and appreciation, Christine Davis-Jeffers, Executive Director

JACK THORNTON In Memoriam

Jack Thornton is one of the significant reasons that the Sun Valley Center of the Arts exists today. When he passed away in January of this year, he left behind an incomparable legacy of support to The Center that began more than three decades ago. It continued without pause with his wife, Gail, at his side. A frequent Board member, Jack was among a group of young wine aficionados who saw the potential of an event that would combine great chefs with talented vintners under the backdrop of the dazzling beauty of the Wood River Valley. It was to be a food and wine celebration on behalf of the community. The Sun Valley Wine Auction proved to be as successful and enduring as his many business pursuits. Also, it sparked the founding of similar events on behalf of nonprofits nationwide. In short, it was visionary. Jack’s capacity for humor and practical jokes is legendary. Any gathering of friends or colleagues could easily fill a book with tales. A lifelong Francophile, Jack spent years trying to become fluent in the language that he loved, but never quite got it. His spectacular restaurant, Evergreen, was his homage to the wine and the cuisine of France he so loved and was a treasured by locals and visitors alike. An avid cyclist, his “boys bike trips” to France brought together the likes of David Reynolds, Dick Fairfield, Chris Kastner, Bill Tribolet. Planned with military precision by Jack, the trips were the ultimate in joie de vivre experiences. River trips down the Middle Fork of the Salmon were a summer staple for friends and family. Of course, Jack filled an entire j-boat with wine to make sure no thirst went unquenched.

Art is...a legacy.

During the course of his life, Jack’s philanthropy knew no bounds and he often quietly supported organizations and individuals with little or no fanfare or recognition. Frequently this was done anonymously. Husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, gourmet, jokester, oenophile, cyclist, golfer, rock solid friend, banjo player, builder, generous heart. Jack embraced life to the fullest.

Let’s all raise a glass in his magnificent memory! Colleen Buckley

The Tradition of the

S U N VA L L E Y C E N T E R W INE AUC TIO N

Thirty-six years ago the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction was conceived by Glenn Janss and a few of her close friends to help support an emerging arts organization, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Few would have envisioned that their idea would grow to become as significant and important as it is today. Over three decades later, the Wine Auction has become vital to the arts programs in this valley. As the story goes, in 1981 Glenn Janss visited Auction Napa Valley and thought, “we could do that here” in Sun Valley to support the then fledgling arts center. She invited vintner friends and guests and they auctioned off some bottles and had a great time trading wine in support of the arts. Thousands of vintners have shared this journey with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Much has changed over time but the exceptional and generous winery participation has not. We are thrilled and honored to have such an outstanding line-up of participating vintners joining us in our efforts.

The locals know that Sun Valley, Idaho, is a community built on camaraderie and meaningful friendships. The Sun Valley Center Wine Auction shares those same qualities. Lasting relationships are formed here between patrons and vintners. We take pride in being a world-class event with an intimate feel, and we welcome all of our guests with open arms. The Center has grown and flourished over the years but its mission has stayed true – to enrich our community though transformative arts and educational experiences. The tradition of the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction also remains the same – to raise vital funds to support arts education in our community. The Sun Valley Center Wine Auction is as relevant as it ever was, bringing vintners and wine lovers together in a beautiful location for three glorious days of incredible wine, food and friendship. For the love of our community, let’s all raise our glasses and our paddles!

Thank You to Our

VINTNERS The Sun Valley Center for the Arts is appreciative of the continued generosity of the participating vintners who make this event possible.

C O N TA I N E R D E S I G N AT I O N S 1 . 375 ML

6 . RE H O B OA M

2 . 75 0 ML

7. IMPE RI A L

This designation refers to a small bottle that holds 375ml of wine, half as much as a standard wine container.

This designation refers to the standard-sized bottle that holds 750ml of wine, or 4/5-quarts. This size bottle, regardless of whether it has a straight or sloping neck, is used for red, white, rosĂŠ and sparkling wines. Sparkling wine bottles appear to be larger than standard because they are made of thicker glass to withstand the pressures of carbonation, but they contain 750ml of wine.

3 . M AG N U M

This designation refers to a bottle that holds 1.5 liters of wine, the equivalent of two 750ml bottles. Sparkling wines are sometimes fermented in magnums because this method is believed to lengthen the wine’s life.

4 . D O U B LE M AG N U M

This designation refers to a bottle that holds three liters of wine, the equivalent of four 750ml bottles.

5 . J E RO B OA M

A TA S T E O F H I S T O RY with Joseph Phelps Vineyards Since 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has dedicated itself to producing wines of character, quality and significance at its vineyards and wineries in Napa Valley and on the western Sonoma Coast. Their Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are part of the movement bringing recognition and acclaim to this cool-climate growing region. But it is Insignia, their flagship wine and California’s first proprietary red Bordeaux-style blend, which has earned Joseph Phelps its longstanding reputation for excellence. First produced in 1974, Insignia is widely recognized as one of the most iconic wines in Napa Valley, earning favorable critical reviews vintage after vintage. The 2002 vintage was awarded 'Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator magazine in 2005, and in November 2013, Robert M. Parker, Jr. of The Wine Advocate awarded Insignia three perfect 100-point scores for the 1991, 1997 and 2002 vintages, calling it "one of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blends." Tonight, you have the chance to take home a piece of that history with this extraordinary auction lot. Add these special bottles to your own cellar—six 750ml bottles in a gorgeous wooden box, along with three magnums of the 2013 Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia, the 40th vintage of this special wine. It earned 98+ points from The Wine Advocate with its "...stunning inky blue/purple color, a gorgeous nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, fabulous concentration, a full-bodied, multilayered mouthfeel, and tremendous finish with moderate tannin." And, as if the wine weren’t enough, the winners of this lot will also receive a weekend for two couples in Napa Valley, where you will taste the wine for yourself at Joseph Phelps Vineyards during a private lunch with Phelps family members prepared by Executive Chef Brian Sutton while staying for two nights at luxurious Meadowood in Napa Valley. This lot truly has it all!

Must be booked on mutually agreeable dates.

Next, as if the first part of the trip isn’t heavenly enough, allow yourselves to be spoiled anew by DuMOL Winery. Your group will enjoy two blissful nights at Mayacama, an exclusive private club nestled in the hills of northern Sonoma County, not far from the charming town of Healdsburg. In this spectacular setting, DuMOL Winery’s partner and Director of Sales, Tom Pillsbury, will host a delightful wine pairing dinner. You will also join him for a private tasting event with DuMOL wines at the nearby Flax Vineyard. The winning bidder also receives a stunning collection of wines from the two wineries. First, you will take home three signed Magnums of O’Shaughnessy’s coveted 97-point Mount Veeder Cabernet from 2012. This wine "shows layers of dense berry preserves, exotic cola and smoked meat flavors intermixed with tar and rich toast to create a compelling wine that lingers in the mouth for several minutes. This is a richly textured and intense mountain wine that is rewarding upon release and will continue to evolve with cellaring.”

T H E U LT I M AT E CALIFORNIA Wine Country Experience Next, collect a magnum each of three outstanding wines from DuMOL Winery: the 2014 Estate Chardonnay (96+ pts Wine Advocate), "a complex, citrusy, full-bodied Chardonnay that gradually builds in the glass to a powerhouse of mineral drive, deep intensity and ultimately broad, mouth-filling weight;" the 2014 Estate Pinot Noir (93 pts Wine Advocate), "especially ripe and powerful, [the] most structured and most complete Pinot Noir of the vintage with many intricate dimensions, quite rich on the mid-palate, deep and layered but uncommonly structured;" and the 2014 Eddie’s Patch Syrah (92 pts Wine Advocate), "a wine of complementary contrasts—bright and lively yet dark in character [with a] lovely balance between richness and length. The wine dances along the palate and has poise and elegance despite its inherent power." It all kind of makes your jaw drop just a little, doesn’t it?

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE in Napa & Sonoma In Napa, Cam Baker and Kate Solari Baker have been the dynamic force behind Larkmead’s transformation from a historic vineyard site into a world-renowned wine estate. Three couples are invited to be special guests at Larkmead’s state-of-the-art winery for a private vineyard tour and tasting with Estate Director, Dan O’Brien. And they do it organically. This is no small feat. When you taste a wine from Peay, it will make you stop dead in your tracks. During your visit, walk the land with Nick and learn more about this unique vineyard, the weather, the soil...and then rest your tired legs as you enjoy a tasting on the porch with staggering views of the surrounding hills. Later in the evening, the vineyard’s chef, Rob Hunter, will prepare a decadent dinner for your group at the Peay Barn House with a selection of the estate’s library wines. Two-Night Stay for Four Wine Pairing Dinner for Four Tour & Tasting for Four Vineyard Tour for Four Two 1.5-Liter Bottles

DISCOVER THE JEWEL of Sonoma County Deep in the heart of Sonoma lies a winery of special distinction and character, Three Sticks Wines. Founded in 2002, Three Sticks is a boutique, family-owned winery led by veteran winemaker Bob Cabral. Their philosophy is to produce small-lot, artisanal wines of world-class quality from exceptional vineyards in Sonoma County, including estate properties Gap's Crown and Durell Vineyards, often named one of the top five vineyards in Sonoma, no small honor! Come out to beautiful Sonoma Valley and experience the natural beauty and the true taste of California. You and another couple will spend two nights just a block from Sonoma’s quaint town square, at The Cottage Inn & Spa, a tranquil and luxurious retreat. Your private room and suite features unique architectural design elements, with fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, kitchens, private patios and access to the relaxing spa. Bring your boots for an off-road exploration of Durell Vineyard, Three Sticks' home ranch and source of some of California's top Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Next, brush off the dust and step back in time at the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe. Built in 1842 by Captain Vallejo, the Adobe is home to Three Sticks and a vibrant piece of Sonoma history. A member of the Three Sticks winemaking team will guide you on a tour and tasting at the historic Adobe in downtown Sonoma. The Adobe is the longest occupied residence in Sonoma and one of the town's few remaining buildings from California's Mexican Period. The Three Sticks team worked with Sonoma historians and the Sonoma League for Historic Preservation to restore and protect the fabric of the property and its rich history. Library Tasting for Six

Two 750ml Bottles Tour & Luncheon for Six One 1.5-Liter Bottle

S TAG S L E A P S TA R S Two neighboring vineyards in the Stags Leap district have teamed up to offer this VIP experience for three couples in one of Napa’s premier AVAs. Cavus is a family-run vineyard nestled high on the hillside in Napa Valley. Dave Phinney, of Orin Swift fame, has been the winemaker since Cavus’ inception and works with Jim Barbour in the vineyard to produce rich, robust Cabernet Sauvignons that have reached cult status, making them difficult to find. And tucked into the dramatic palisades of the Stags Leap district sits Odette Estate on 45 voluptuous acres. Odette produces full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons that are notable for their combination of power and elegance, while simultaneously showcasing the unique properties of the AVA. At Cavus, your group is invited an exceptional "Petit Flavors" menu and the ultimate tasting experience. This special library tasting with the owners of Cavus will take place at their home in the vineyard, where you will have the chance to sample bitesized pairing flavors and taste Cavus’ famed boutique Cabernet, a rare wine that sells out immediately and was called "a blockbuster" by Robert Parker. The winning bidder will take home two bottles of the 2009 Cavus Cabernet Sauvignon on the night of the auction. Next, Odette Estate will host you for a special tour—a behind-the-scenes look at what makes this one of the Cru Properties of Napa Valley. After the tour, join your hosts for a tasting of their award-winning wines paired with a three-course family-style gourmet luncheon. At the end of your visit, take home a magnum of Odette’s current release, the 2014 Odette Estate Cabernet, a beautiful wine revealing the unique characteristics and terroir of the AVA. This full-bodied and expressive Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a long, persistent finish and was given 95 points by The Wine Advocate.

TO R Wines TA S T I N G AT T O R The people at TOR Wines believe that “wine is irresistible, it is fun, and it is about sharing passion, good fortune and community.” Growers come to TOR because they know the wine will likely be single-vineyard designated, it will get high scores and the vineyard will often be recognized in the press. In most vintages, TOR’s single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays have scored in the top ten wines of the vintage, always among the best of Napa Valley, making them rare and hard to find. Now you get the chance to see what it’s all about for yourself with a special tasting for four at TOR, as well as two exceptional bottles. TOR’s 2014 Tierra Roja Cabernet Sauvignon garnered 95 points from Robert Parker, who described the wine as “sexy, beautiful, fragrant.” And he gave the Reserve Cuvée Susan Chardonnay 96 points, calling it “full-bodied, rich and potentially very complex and long-lived.”

Ramey Wine Cellars MAGICAL MAGNUMS At Ramey, the goal is to craft wines that are in perfect balance…they like to say they are guided by the soul of the land. David Ramey has been described as a visionary in the wine industry and his skill and expertise certainly show in the winery’s Cabernets. Ramey’s techniques are grounded in tradition and guided by innovation. The unique character of the wines is such that tasting one of their exquisitely crafted varietals is an experience not soon forgotten. Ramey wines are pure California in a bottle…and now you can take a little piece of California home with you as this lot’s winning bidder. This collection of four magnums of the 2013 vintage, signed by David Ramey himself, includes three outstanding Cabernets— the Annum, given 93 points by The Wine Advocate and described as a “dense wine [that] is exuberant/boisterous and should offer gorgeous drinking over the next 20+ years,” the Pedregal, winning 95 points, “a wine of stunning intensity, full-bodied potency, beautiful purity and length [with] extravagant richness,” and Ramey’s signature Napa Valley Cabernet, as well as the 95-point “beautiful and bold” Rodgers Creek Syrah. Make these bottles yours tonight.

William Cole Vineyards PA S S I O N A N D PERFECTION Along the lower slopes of Spring Mountain, William Cole Vineyards focuses on making wines of layered complexity and dimension. If you act quickly on this incredible auction lot, you will have the privilege of a private tour and tasting for six people at William Cole’s historic stone winery. The tasting includes distinctive library wines along with the current release of the Cuvée Claire Cabernet Sauvignon, cultivated from the 2.5-acre estate vineyard, which enjoys a historic legacy going back to the 1870s. It is a complex, elegant wine that is the cornerstone of their portfolio and represents the best of Napa Valley. And, as a bonus, a signed magnum of the 2010 Cuvée Claire Cabernet Sauvignon is yours to take home and enjoy. Don’t think twice about it!

Pride Mountain Vineyards MAGIC IN THE M O U N TA I N S Perched in the hills above Santa Rosa, Pride Mountain Vineyards is a 235-acre estate that blends smoothly into its mountainous surroundings and California heritage. This historic location includes the ruins of the former Summit Ranch winery, built in 1890. In the caves, over 23,000 square feet of subterranean storage winds naturally under the hillside, opening out onto a terrace overlooking the vineyards and the scenic northern Napa Valley. Join the Pride family for a tour and tasting for four, and whet your appetite by taking home two impressive magnums as well—the 2014 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, a rich and opulent mountain wine with a finish balanced between varietal fruit notes and tannic intensity, and the 2014 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot, their super-ripe and expressive flagship wine with velvety tannins and a powerful finish. Get ready to be impressed!

Ridge Vineyards THE BEST OF MONTE BELLO Perched high atop the cool Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Ridge Monte Bello estate is an ideal site for the winery’s Bordeaux varietals. These low-yielding vines produce two complementary Cabernet blends. An impressive Imperial of one of those, the Monte Bello Cabernet from 2009, could be yours this evening. Year after year, Monte Bello proves to be a consistently outstanding wine with great structure, complexity and balance. And, in terms of ageability, it has been known to lay down for several decades with elegance and ease. Wine Spectator gave this vintage 95 points, and it received 98 points from The Wine Advocate, with a review calling it “…simply magnificent…layers of dark red fruit, flowers, spices and granite are all woven together in this utterly impeccable wine…glorious and radiant.” The longer this one sleeps in the cellar, the better it will be. Can you stand the suspense?

Additionally, you will bring home a double magnum 2014 Failla Vivien Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, a fabulous wine. According to reviews, “Sweet spices, rose petal, mint and succulent cherry/plum notes all lift from the glass. Supple and beautifully layered throughout, the Sonoma Coast hits all the right notes. A final burst of fruit rushes across the palate on the refreshing, inviting wine. There is so much to like.” Find out why Antonio Galloni calls Ehren Jordan’s wines “superb across the board.”

Figge Cellars Carmel Valley, CA

Figge Cellars WINES OF CHAR ACTER Exceptional wines aren’t made. They’re grown. That’s why Figge Cellars crafts grapes into six wines of distinct character—two Chardonnays, two Pinot Noirs, one Syrah and one Rosé. Each wine is made by hand from individual vineyards to express the distinctive story of the land where they’re grown. This “terroir” style of winegrowing is what truly sets Figge apart. Peter Figge’s passion and depth of experience in viticulture enabled him to gently coax a spectrum of flavors from the grapes in the vineyard. This inspired approach to grape growing ensures that far less work is required at the winemaking stage. Figge wines exude exceptional balance and clarity, and pair impeccably with food. This lot offers three outstanding vintages of Figge Pinot Noir: two magnums of the 2008, and six bottles each of the 2013 and 2014 Figge Pelio Pinot Noir, a structured, juicy Pinot Noir exhibiting wild berry, cherry and spice shining brightly around earthly undertones. These are delicious, restrained and elegant wines.

HALL & WALT Wines CLASSIC CABERNET HALL Wines is crafting some of the best Cabernets in the Napa Valley these days. Bid on this lot and you will understand why. By blending these various lots, they have created a rich panorama on the palate, a landscape of complexity and character that clearly defines Napa Valley. Saddleback Cellars CABERNET AND C H A R D O N N AY J E W E L S With a rich history and enviable soil and climate, Oakville boasts the greatest concentration of preeminent Cabernet Sauvignon producers in Napa Valley. Known as “The King of Cabernet,” legendary winemaker and owner of Saddleback Cellars, Nils Venge, makes stellar wines that not only reflect the character of this legendary Napa Valley region, but also seem to reflect Nils’ personality—bold, yet approachable, with layers of complexities. With this lot, you will have the chance to explore those complexities to the fullest. This collection of Saddleback’s premier selections is yours for the taking this evening. These are truly powerful, award-winning wines. Enjoy the 2015 Saddleback Chardonnay, modeled after the "old-world" style from Chablis, France, medium-bodied and layered with ripe tree fruits and soft impressions of toast and spice from oak aging, as well as the 2011 Saddleback Reserve Cabernet, a wine with elegant aromas of lavender, violet and sweet vanilla leading to a palate of rich black currant and anise. Moderate tannins give this delicate wine a backbone.

Somnium Wine DREAMY CABS Racecar driver Danica Patrick has opened a new winery and, with the help of winemaker Aaron Pott, is producing impressive Cabernets from a magical location on Howell Mountain. Take home a selection of Somnium’s wines with this lot, including two bottles each of the 2013 and 2015 vintages, as well as a signed magnum of the 2015 vintage: “From the bottle to the glass, a very dense, opaque color presents itself. With a few swirls the aromas of toasted walnuts, toffee and black cherry fill your senses. A sip reveals heady aromas that roll to the mid-palate with supple tannins. Dark chocolate and cherry flavors intermingle to offer a long, velvety finish of plum and cherry.” Sounds pretty tempting, doesn’t it? And for true fans, the best part of this lot just might be the original hero card signed by Danica… icing on the cake!

To soften the tannins, typical of mountain fruit, Vineyard {511} Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 100% French oak for 30 months, followed by another 12 months of bottle aging before it is released. Sokol Blosser OREGON’S FINEST In 1971, the Sokol Blosser family planted grapes on just five acres in the Dundee Hills southwest of Portland. As one of the pioneering wineries of the region, Sokol Blosser has played a key role in developing and shaping the now-prominent Oregon wine industry. The winery is still family owned and operated, with the second generation now at the helm: siblings Alex and Alison Sokol Blosser. To thrive, Pinot Noir grapes need a particular climate like that of Burgundy, France. Coincidentally, the location of the Sokol Blosser estate is perfect for the notoriously temperamental fruit. You would be remiss if you didn’t try your hardest to go home with these two magnums of Sokol Blosser’s signature Dundee Hills Estate Pinot Noir, one from 2013, expressive and bright, showcasing dark fruit flavors of cherry and blueberry with earthy and spicy characteristics, and the other from 2014, with rich, dark color and great intensity. Enjoy!
