Praised for the purity of his lyrical and heartfelt performances, Leon McCawley performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.23 – a product of one of Mozart’s greatest Viennese years. Tonight’s concert also features one of Mendelssohn’s stirring evocations of the natural world: his romantic recreation of the dramatic Scottish coast in his Third Symphony, directed by the world-renowned conductor and winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Conductor Award in 2013, Kirill Karabits.

“ Alessio Bax made his first entry

and it was clear within minutes that here at last was a pianist with the style, the sound, the breadth of technique and, above all, the ability to listen and participate in a spontaneous give-and-take interpretation.”

Beethoven

Symphony No.5 Conductor: Alexander Shelley Piano: Alessio Bax With glorious melodies, extensive lyricism and divine harmonies, it’s no wonder Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 is regarded by many as the greatest, and recreating these memorable moments is the young virtuoso Alessio Bax. A dazzling curtain raiser and another uniquely Russian masterpiece, Glinka’s whirlwind Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila has an exclusive combination of earthly exuberance and heroic feeling. Alexander Shelley, a remarkable young conductor, leads the Orchestra through this concert full of energy and splendour. We end with Beethoven’s legendary Fifth Symphony, a work that changed the face of music forever with its opening four-note motif.

Janina Fialkowska

“ Fialkowska was always one

of those ‘best-kept secret’ pianists, loved by connoisseurs for her tonal refinement and exquisite musical taste, but her ordeal seems to have released a new lease of life in her music-making... the playing is sheer bliss.”

Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture

Mozart

Piano Concerto No.24

Dvořák

Symphony No.8 Conductor: Michał Nesterowicz Piano: Janina Fialkowska

Enchanting audiences worldwide, esteemed virtuoso Janina Fialkowska performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.24. At the summit of Mozart’s creative genius, the work’s unique quality is fashioned through the ominous darkness of the minor key, and a touch of Mozart’s elegance, rendering it all the more poignant. Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture depicts the Scottish scenery at Fingal’s Cave with mysteriously intense melodies and calmer passages, capturing both the stormy tides and still waters. Dvo ák’s Eighth Symphony is one of his most exuberant works, drawing on Bohemian folk music for inspiration.

Cello Concerto

Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade

Conductor: Eduardo Portal Cello: Natalie Clein

A display of quintessentially Czech music from two Bohemian legends, with Smetana’s exhilarating Overture to his first and most enduring comic opera The Bartered Bride and Dvo ák’s magnificent Cello Concerto, performed by world-class cellist Natalie Clein. Although composed in America, it expresses the melodic inflections derived from Czech folk music with a continuous flow of invention and lyricism. Young Spanish maestro Eduardo Portal leads the Orchestra in the tale of ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful epic, Scheherazade. A haunting solo violin (Scheherazade), menacing brass fanfares (the Sultan) and the strumming of a harp present a mystical far-away land.
