WELCOME From May through to December the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) continues the celebration of its 70th Anniversary at its resident home, Cadogan Hall, bringing you a variety of repertoire from outstanding international artists. As 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Orchestra pays homage to this literary genius with The Food of Love this summer. With Shakespearean music, verse and anecdote, this unique theatrical evening is hosted by acclaimed actors Gemma Arterton and Patrick Stewart. We are also delighted to be joined by the young and dynamic Alexander Shelley for a new concert series, exploring music by eminent composers Sibelius and Prokofiev, as well as welcoming Garrison Keillor, storyteller and humourist, for a witty performance with the RPO. Ending this season are two Christmas extravaganzas – A Choral Christmas with the City of London Choir and the perennial festive-favourite, Christmas Cracker. We look forward to sharing this concert series at Cadogan Hall with you soon. RPO Rewards points and friends discounts apply

Prince Igor Overture Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Symphony No.5

Fabien Gabel Conductor Alexandra Dariescu Piano

Led by distinguished conductor Fabien Gabel, the RPO performs a sparkling programme of Russian gems, including the Overture to Borodin’s Prince Igor opera and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. Alexandra Dariescu will impress with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody based on Paganini’s Caprice No.24 for solo violin; this much-loved work adds depth, drama and dynamic energy to Paganini’s original score. What began as one of Tchaikovsky’s most difficult works to compose, subsequently became one of his most well-known, as we hear his magnificent masterpiece, Symphony No.5.

TUESDAY 28TH JUNE 2016, 7.30PM Vaughan Williams Mozart Beethoven

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Violin Concerto No.3 Symphony No.3, ‘Eroica’

Pinchas Zukerman

Conductor and Violin

Vaughan Williams’ lush, expansive work for string orchestra opens this summer festival. This unusually orchestrated work is scored for a large string orchestra, smaller string ensemble and a solo quartet, showing off the string orchestra in all its glory and evoking an unmistakably British sound. In contrast to the sweet and lyrical melodies of Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto, Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony is grand and majestic, with the Orchestra out in full force.

Serenade for Strings Andante Cantabile from String Quartet No.1 Sérénade mélancolique Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture Symphony No.8

Pinchas Zukerman Amanda Forsyth

Conductor and Violin Cello

Tchaikovsky has a well-earned reputation as one of the great masters of orchestral writing, with graceful melodies and sumptuous harmonies oozing romance and drama. His three works performed in this concert portray different elements of Tchaikovsky’s style, from wistful and melancholic to luscious and intense. Opening the concert is Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, which has a certain youthful charm while also portraying his developing musical maturity. Ending the concert in style will be Dvorˇák’s cheerful and lyrical Symphony No.8.

The Swan Sees His Reflection Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet Serenade for Wind Instruments Octet for Strings in E-flat major

Pinchas Zukerman Conductor and Violin Amanda Forsyth Cello Principal Players from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

It is a delight to welcome Amanda Forsyth back to the stage for this intimate series of chamber works. From a contemporary composition by Amanda Forsyth’s father – which is reminiscent of Saint-Saëns’ The Swan – to Mendelssohn’s Octet, this concert exhibits some incredible musical talent and world-class performances.

TUESDAY 5TH JULY 2016, 7.30PM Elgar Mozart Beethoven

Introduction and Allegro Violin Concerto No.5, ‘Turkish’ Symphony No.5

Pinchas Zukerman

Conductor and Violin

Scored for string quartet and string orchestra, Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro was composed to show off the performers’ virtuosity. Pinchas Zukerman’s solo line will soar above the Orchestra in this expressive masterpiece. Following on the drama is Mozart’s Fifth Violin Concerto; often referred to as ‘Turkish’, the wild and frenzied Allegro in the final movement emulates a Turkish style with melodic leaps, pounding rhythms and percussive strings. Concluding the Festival is the instantly recognisable and much-adored Beethoven Symphony No.5. This concert is supported by MWM Consulting

Tannhäuser Overture Piano Concerto No.2 Symphony No.4

In typical Wagnerian style, the Tannhäuser Overture encapsulates the drama of this greatly admired opera with its quasi-Bach chorale opening and dazzling, tormenting middle. Composed at the mere age of twenty, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2 harks back to the likes of Hummel and Mozart whilst including Chopin’s patriotic hallmark, as the finale inhabits the world of Polish folk music. The concert finishes with Beethoven’s sunny and joyous Fourth Symphony.
