Rare ink signature, “Yours most obediently, John Constable, R. A.,” on an off-white 4.75 x 2.25 slip. In fine condition, with light soiling. Starting Bid $300

Photograph. Painter and illustrator (1832–1883) known for his illustrated editions of books by Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Milton, and others. Uncommon 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by F. Mulnier of Paris, signed in the lower border in bold ink, “G. Dore.” In fine condition. Starting Bid $200 artist (1881–1955) best known for his brightly colored, cubist and machine-age-influenced abstractions. ALS in French, signed twice at the conclusion, “F. Leger” and “Fernand Léger,” one page, both sides, 8.25 x 10.5, penned boldly at the bottom of a typed letter from Armand-Jean Cauliez of Parisian magazine Cinema, dated June 18, 1949. Leger’s bold handwritten letter is untranslated; however, it is assuredly an in-depth response to a survey question posed by Cauliez, who asks Leger (translated): “Is there a new cinematographic avant-garde?” The typed letter has been struck through in pencil by a secretarial hand. In fine condition, with short splits to the ends of the central horizontal fold. Starting Bid $200

425. Maximilien Luce Handwritten Letter with Sketch. Prolific French neo-impressionist artist (1858–1941) known for his work in both the Impressionist and Pointillist modes. Unsigned handwritten letter in French by Maximilien Luce, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 5.25, no date but circa 1910s. A handwritten letter in pencil by the esteemed artist, boasting a wonderful full-page landscape sketch. Luce writes to his son, “My old Frederick,” in part (translated): “I have not yet got to see Monet and so do yourself give your news to him. If you come to me, we will go together to see him. I don’t know if Bonnard is in Vernon.” In fine condition. Starting Bid $300

426. Rene Magritte Autograph Letter

Signed. ALS in French, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.5, personal letterhead, February 14, 1961. Handwritten letter to friend and poet Andre Bosmans, making reference to poet Joë Bousquet and the journal ‘Rhetorique,’ a project he and Bosmans collaborated on together. In part (translated): “I propose to reproduce two paintings of mine among the photos you possess at your choice for the magazine. If the paper of the magazine is not ‘couché,’ we could make four pages in couché paper of which the photos would be well printed. The four pages would be bound with the other pages of the magazine.” Here, he adds a sketch to explain. He continues: “The expenses that this would entail would be on me.” In fine condition, with a small mounting strip along the reverse top edge. Starting Bid $200
