Rare payment made to a black soldier “who hath served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army” at Valley Forge
DS, signed “J. Lawrence,” one page, 8 x 3.75, June 1, 1782. State of Connecticut Treasury Office pay order for £13.2 payable to “Robert Freeman, who hath served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army,” signed at the conclusion in ink by Treasurer John Lawrence. The reverse records several interest payments made, and is endorsed by Freeman with his mark, “X,” near the cancelation hole. The Valley Forge Muster Role Project records a “Robert Freeman,” a private of African American ethnicity, as part of the 8th Connecticut Regiment on duty under General Washington at Valley Forge from December 1777 through June 1778. In very good to fine condition, with some splitting along the fragile folds. Starting Bid $200

Signed. Partly-printed DS, signed “Joshua L. Chamberlain,” one page, 10 x 15, January 19, 1870. As governor of Maine, Chamberlain names Simon B. Davis “to be one of our Trial Justices, within and for our County of York.” Neatly signed in the upper left by Governor Chamberlain, and countersigned at the conclusion by Secretary of State Franklin M. Drew. The gold foil seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait of the Civil War hero to an overall size of 24.5 x 21.5. Signed. Partly-printed DS, signed “G. W. C. Lee,” one page, 18 x 16.25, June 27, 1877. Desirable bachelor’s degree diploma from Washington & Lee University issued to Howard W. Barclay for having “successfully completed the required course of study in the Schools of Law and Equity.” Signed in ink by George Washington Custis Lee as the university’s president, and also signed by faculty members and trustees, including former Confederate General John Echols. The original red seal and ribbon affixed at the bottom remain intact. In fine condition. Accompanied by a 17.5 x 14.75 certificate awarded to Barclay for completing the “Junior German Class in the School of Modern Languages,” signed in ink by three university officials. Starting Bid $200
