701. Georges Bizet Autograph Letter Signed.
French composer (1838–1875) whose operatic masterpiece, Carmen, was completed just before his untimely death from heart disease. Boldly penned ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6.25, no date. You will be very kind to give me all the information about this.” In fine condition. Starting Bid $200
702. Edward Elgar Autograph
Letter Signed. Leading English composer (1857–1934) and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, 38 Via Gregoriana letterhead, November 23, 1917. Handwritten letter, in part: “I rec’d the enclosed a few days ago & today I’ve received the copy of…referred to. Will one of your people write to Herr Reiners & tell him I cannot possibly alter the passage. I remember his artistic imagery with pleasure…You will see that his letter requests an alteration of the only real tenor bit…his pencilled proposition alters the melody into nothing.” In fine condition, with faint edge toning. Starting Bid $200
703. Maria Malibran Autograph Letter Signed. Legendary mezzo-soprano (1808–1836) who was one of the most famous opera singers of the 19th century. She passed away at age 28 from injuries sustained after falling off her horse. ALS in French, signed “Malibran,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.5, October 29, 1829. Lengthy handwritten letter by the famed mezzo-soprano, discussing her travel itinerary and their correspondence. In small part (translated): “I end my letter saying that you are a villain, who did not want to reply to me. I have written to you, from Gloucester, from Chester, from all the places in the world…But it seems that this year is not propitious for people who dedicate themselves to literature, fine arts and, like me, who dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to epistolary style…Hem!! No foolishness. Enough prattle...Do you know what saddens me each time I finish my letters? It is to have to sign Malibran because of all the foolishness in the world.” Addressed on the integral leaf in Malibran’s hand. In fine condition.
In 1829, Malibran fell in love with the violinist Charles de Bériot and determined to divorce her first husband. Initially, she asked the Marquis de Lafayette to push a divorce law through the French Parliament; when this effort proved impossible, she asked her lawyers to annul her first marriage. It was finally annulled by the Courts of Paris in 1836, and she would marry Charles on March 26, 1836 —just six months before her unfortunate death. In the final line of this letter, she introspectively comments on the tragic circumstances of her romantic life. Starting Bid $200

1987 UK promo cassette tape and album sleeve proof for Prince’s The Black Album— quite possibly the only two in existence
UK promotional album sleeve proof for Prince’s legendary The Black Album
738. Prince: The Black Album UK Promotional Cassette Tape and Album Sleeve Proof. Exceedingly rare original
1987 UK promotional cassette tape and a UK promotional album sleeve proof for Prince’s legendary The Black Album, also known as The Funk Bible, which was originally intended to be released on December 8, 1987, with an entirely black sleeve and no printed title or song credits. A week before its release date, Prince had the album withdrawn after having a spiritual experience that convinced him the album was ‘evil.’ Warner Bros. worked extremely hard to destroy all of the 500,000 copies pressed on vinyl, CD, and cassette—very few survived, making extant examples among the rarest in the world. To our knowledge, this is the only UK album cover proof and the only UK promo cassette tape of The Black Album in existence. The record is not included. In overall fine condition.
Accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance from the original owner, who was employed as a music buyer for a large United Kingdom retailer during the 1980s and 1990s. Starting Bid $500
The rarest of the rare—an advance pressing of unreleased Camille
sively rare advance pressing of Camille, Prince’s unreleased 1986 album. The mint-condition disc has Paisley Park labels with track listings of “Rebirth of the Flesh,” “Housequake,” “Strange Relationship,” and “Feel U Up” on side one, and “Shockadelica,” “Good Love,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” and “Rockhard in a Funky Place” one side two. Etched into the ‘dead wax’ matrix area are the numbers, “1-25543-A-SH1, B-26287-SH1, 15191” on side one, and “1-25543-B-SH1, B-26288-SH1, 15191-X” on side two. Includes the original unmarked paper and cardboard sleeves, with a “Sound Stage 87 VIP” pass affixed to the sleeve. In very fine condition.
This advance pressing shows just how close to release Camille came before Prince pulled the project—the label artwork had been finalized and advance pressings had been distributed to some in-house executives. It remains unclear exactly how many copies of this Camille pressing exist, but it is estimated that there may be as few as 25. The Camille advance pressing was essentially unknown to the Prince community until one surfaced in a lot from the Prince collection of Karen Krattinger, which we sold in September 2016—this is now the third example we have handled. A tremendously sought-after album of the utmost significance. Starting Bid $1000

Design blueprints and fabric for Prince’s iconic 2005 Oscar night appearance
765. Prince: 77th Academy Awards Fashion Designs and Suit Fabric from the Collection of Maurice
Hood. From the personal collection of custom tailor Maurice Hood—a grouping of five fashion CAD (computer-aided design) faxes, their associated garment samples (fabrics and linings), and a total of 32 garment patterns used by Hood to create five custom suits for Prince. The CAD faxes and fabric swatches were originally sent to Hood by Paisley Park artist Debbie McGuan as guidelines for five finely tailored suits he was commissioned to make for Prince in lead-up to the musician’s appearance at the 77th Academy Awards on February 27, 2005. From the CADs and samples, Hood then produced the series of garment pattern blocks used to make all five suits—in the end, Prince famously chose “Outfit #1,” Hood’s 4-ply purple silk tuxedo, which he wore when he presented the Oscar for Best Original Song.
The five 8.5 x 11 fashion CAD faxes contain sketches made by McGuan, who designed suits for Prince for 14 years, often from opaque artist-given directives like ‘Listen to this song and come up with what you think it looks like.’ Each CAD is dated to February 19, 2005, includes her detailed instructions pertaining to each individual design, and are presented with their respective fabric and lining samples, the majority in tones of purple.
The sheets are accordingly numbered and identified as “Outfit #1...Purple 4 ply silk 2 pc. Formal suit,” “Outfit #2...2 pc. Lush purple velvet (silk) with shawl collar, flap pockets,” and “Outfit #3...Two toned lilac / purple paisley / print brocade jacket (pant made in L.A.).” Outfit designs 4 and 5, while not directly numbered, can be identified by matching their description with Hood’s accompanying provenance letter: No. 4, “2 pc. Black w/ purple pinstripe suit single breasted,” and No. 5, “Lining for 4 ply 2 pc. Suit.” Four of the CADs include additional handwritten notes from McGuan and Hood, and “Outfit #3” comes with a photo of Hood holding the finished product.
The collection of 30 garment patterns are for Prince’s back, side body, sleeves, collars, and fronts, with only the latter differing across the five suit designs—Hood used McGuan’s detailed CAD notations for button spacing, shoulder width to seams, and button holes. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a Special Collector’s Edition of People magazine, which contains an image of Prince wearing Hood’s Oscarnight suit, and by Hood’s detailed letter of provenance. Starting Bid $500
