311. Henry Clinton Document Signed. Revolutionary
War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “H. Clinton,” one page, 8 x 12.75, September 1, 1781. As general and commander in chief of His Majesty’s forces within the colonies, Clinton directs a deputy paymaster to “cause to be paid to Captain John McPherson of His Majesty’s 82d Regiment…the Sum of Fifty Two Pounds, Seven Shillings, and Two Pence Sterling, Being Subsistence for the Convalescents left by the aforesaid Regiment at New York.” In fine condition. crystal-clear original 7.5 x 13 imperial bust portrait of Sherman in suit and bow tie, taken by Falk Studios of New York (and so stamped at the bottom), signed in the lower portion of the image in black ink, “W. T. Sherman, General 1887.” In very good to fine condition, with a crease to the lower left corner area, another crease passing through Sherman’s left temple, and a matboard backing affixed to the reverse. dier and administrator (1861-1936) most famous for his role during World War I, in which he led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in the conquest of Palestine and Syria in 1917 and 1918. ALS signed “Allenby F.M.,” one page, 7.5 x 9.75, The Residency, Cairo letterhead, December 25, 1919. Significant handwritten letter penned shortly after the conclusion of World War I, in part: “A remarkable feature of my campaign in the Holy Land is the fact that one third of my Army which won Jerusalem from the Turks was composed of Muslims. That Army also included—besides Christians—Jews and Hindoos. All worked, with sincerity and devotion, in the same cause.” In fine condition, with a small circular area of toning. Vintage matte-finish 10 x 12.75 portrait of Mitchell wearing his decorated military uniform, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To my friend Gould Dietz, with the best regards of, Bill. Official vintage matte-finish 10.5 x 13.5 Signal Corps photo of Petain at an Awards Ceremony wearing the American Distinguished Service Medal, signed and inscribed in fountain pen in French to General Johnson Hagood, “Ph. Petain, 22. 12. 20.” In fine condition. Johnson Hagood (18731948) was commissioned in the artillery and served in France during World War I where he created the Services of Supply. Historic vintage matte-finish 11.25 x 9.75 photo of five Allied military leaders of World War I—Gen. Baron Jacques of Belgium, Gen. Armando Diaz of Italy, Marshal Ferdinand Foch of France, Gen. John J. Pershing of the United States, and Sir Admiral Earl David Beatty of Great Britain—attending the Liberty Memorial dedication ceremony in Kansas City on November 1, 1921, signed in the lower border in fountain pen by all five. Displayed in its original heavy bronze-and-wood plaque, 21 x 19, with legend below: “American Legion Convention, Kansas City, Missouri, November 1, 1921.” In fine condition, with minor dampstaining to the mat. Exceedingly rare oversized vintage matte-finish 9.25 x 13 portrait of Yamamoto in uniform by Harris & Ewing, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “With best compliments to Mr. George Yamaoka, I. ter Signed. Illustrious French general who rose to Marshal General of France (1611–1675) whose military exploits over the course of five decades earned him a reputation as one of the greatest military commanders in modern history; he was killed by an Imperial cannonball at the Battle of Salzbach, in present-day Germany, in June 1675. LS in French, signed “Turenne,” one page, 6 x 8, July 31, 1873. Untranslated letter by Turenne as Marshal General of France (“Mareschal, general des Camps & Armées du Roy”), recommending a veteran soldier’s enrollment in the Hotel des Invalides.
