311. Henry Clinton Document Signed. Revolutionary War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “H. Clinton,” one page, 8 x 12.75, September 1, 1781. As general and commander in chief of His Majesty’s forces within the colonies, Clinton directs a deputy paymaster to “cause to be paid to Captain John McPherson of His Majesty’s 82d Regiment…the Sum of Fifty Two Pounds, Seven Shillings, and Two Pence Sterling, Being Subsistence for the Convalescents left by the aforesaid Regiment at New York.” In fine condition. Remember me very affectionately to Mrs. Carr when you write.” Retains the integral address leaf with partial red wax seal. Fabulous and crystal-clear original 7.5 x 13 imperial bust portrait of Sherman in suit and bow tie, taken by Falk Studios of New York (and so stamped at the bottom), signed in the lower portion of the image in black ink, “W. T. Sherman, General 1887.” In very good to fine condition, with a crease to the lower left corner area, another crease passing through Sherman’s left temple, and a matboard backing affixed to the reverse.
