When creating a new document, you can choose from a range of sizes or you could add in custom.

4

Page Size, default input in millimetres.

Unit of measurements you want to work in.

Portrait or landscape document / book.

Tick this box if you are making a book, if you are designing poster or single sheet document untick this box.

How many pages do you want to start with, you can add more pages whist you are designing.

Add columns to give you a grid to assist you with laying out your elements.

This controls the margin you have around each page.

5

Both images/graphics and text are put into frames, these can be simple shapes, as well as using the pen tool to create custom shapes.

6
7
Draw out a rectangle frame to start laying out where you are planning on adding images.

Now drag an image into the frame you have just made.

8

The blue outlined frame is what will be exported. You can use this to crop your image into new shapes to get more interesting layouts.

If you click in the double circle on the centre of the blue frame or Double click on the image within the frame. The orange frame is your images within the blue frame. Remember things can be bigger or smaller than your blue frame.

When saving it is good practice to also do a ‘save as’ and change the format to IDML. This file is backwards compatible and can be opened in all versions of indesign.

14

When exporting a PDF for printing on the photocopier, always export as Pages. Then when opening it in Adobe Acrobat you can print as a booklet.

15

Type tools are found under the “T” tool on the left tool bar. Remember you will need to use the frame tool to make a frame you can turn into a text box.

Once you have turned the frame into a text box, you can type into it. Remember, in the same way images can be bigger than the frame they are in text can be the same, there can be too much text within the frame or the font can be to bigger to fit as well.

4

W hen the text frame is activated on the top bar there are two panels of tool for formation text.

Character formatting Controls

This panel give you all the formation options to work with individual characters within a frame

Paragraph formatting Controls

Master pages can be found in the page window

Master pages can be selected and edited here

This letter relates to the master page that is applied to this page

To apply master pages to the individual pages, drag them to the page you wish it to be applied to

4

To edit the master page double click on it on the page window. This will open up a double page spread that you can add your elements too

Everything you add to the master page will be locked to the background of the page you apply the master too.
