Congress Releases 2019 Lok Sabha Election Manifesto While an election manifesto in India is a kind of cheat sheet to make false promises and hoodwink the gullible voters, Congress has released its manifesto which is not expected to make any impact on its election performance. As Lok Sabha election is around the corner, Congress party released on April 2 its manifesto with a slew of promises. According to the party, the manifesto has been prepared after a number of consultations with different stakeholders across India. “आज मने कां ेस पाट का 2019 लोकसभा चन ु ाव के लए घोषणा प जार कया। कां ेस का यह ‘जन आवाज‘ घोषणा प , हंद ु तान के लाख –करोड़ यव ु ाओं, कसान और म हलाओं क भावनाओं और सम याओं को आवाज दे ने क को शश है ।” Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted. Last year, Congress had launched a manifesto website to take citizens’ suggestions for the Lok Sabha election. The website was launched by Congress leader and chairman of the party’s manifesto committee P Chidambaram. The website – available in 16 Indian languages – gave restricted access to users who were willing to provide their personal details such as email and phone number before submitting their ideas for the manifesto.

countering the BJP’s undemocratic agendas through a manifesto which is truly for the people. The party claims that its manifesto will focus on providing jobs to the youth, ensuring that the poor and marginalized are empowered, and it will try to undo the damage to the economy which the ruling NDA / BJP government has inflicted. As most Congress leaders lack knowledge of the current political ecosystem in India, they fail to realize that a manifesto is a wastepaper which is not read even by the party members, let alone the voters. A manifesto has no relevance for voters because it is observed that people who vote in Indian elections are mostly poor, uneducated, and ignorant who are cheated by corrupt politicians with their ad campaigns and false promises. While almost all politicians in India are corrupt – many are facing serious criminal charges – they have been winning elections by dividing voters on the basis of their caste, creed, color, and religious affiliations. Elections are also being won by bribing the voters, intimidating them, or by tampering with the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Then where will Congress use the manifesto that it has released? The party must know that only those politicians and political parties will win future elections in India who know the art of stealing voter databases and hacking EVMs. In some areas where voters are highly educated, a proactive interaction with them can help a political party. But it is being observed that Congress lacks content and communication skills that are required to woo the educated voters. All the communications of Congress are designed to criticize PM Narendra Modi – particularly Modi’s demonetization decision and Goods and Services Tax (GST) introduction. Although Congress had raised the issue of corruption in Modi’s Rafale deal, it proved to be a damp squib as Modi and BJP have refused to acknowledge Congress rhetoric. Educated people (who are less than 5% in India’s population of 1.3 billion) are fed up with Rahul Gandhi’s oft-repeated, monotonous speeches on demonetization, GST, and Rafale. Worse, there is no communications expert in Congress who could bring freshness to the content of Rahul Gandhi’s speeches. As Congress workers also lack new-media skills, the party’s messaging on social media properties such as Twitter is not quite effective. The social media team of Congress also does not understand the different digital formats to deliver content to different categories of information consumers. Plus, social media qualitative impact analysis is another subject that Congress workers need to learn. More importantly, Congress must know that no publicity is bad publicity – particularly for Modi. Instead of talking only about Modi and attacking his policies, the traditional party must reveal its own road maps to achieve targets in critical areas such as employment, education, trade, health care, c orruption, and so on.

The Congress manifesto committee members were Manpreet Badal, P Chidambaram, Sushmita Dev, Rajeev Gowda, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Jairam Ramesh, Salman Khurshid, Bindu Krishna, Selja Kumari, Raghuvir Singh Meena, Bhalchandra Mungekar, Meenakshi Natrajan, Rajni Patil, Sam Pitroda, Sachin Rao, Tamradhwaj Sahu, Mukul Sangma, Shashi Tharoor, and Lalitesh Tripathi.
Modi Babu Is Now Expiry Babu: Mamata Banerjee Ms. Banerjee has demanded a judicial probe monitored by a former supreme court judge into the demonetization decision that was arbitrarily announced by Modi. All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Chairperson Mamata Banerjee started her campaign in Bangla for the 2019 Lok Sabha election at a rally at Dinhata in Cooch Behar on April 3. Ms. Banerjee – who is a fierce critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi – challenged him for an open debate on various issues in the country. “I am challenging Modi to a debate. We will ask questions to each other, let’s see what he replies to mine,” she stated.

She also has categorically demanded a judicial probe monitored by a former supreme court judge into the demonetization decision that was arbitrarily announced by Modi.

On November 8, 2016, Modi had demonetized currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 with the belief that his decision will help check corruption and stop the flow of black money in the country. But his decision resulted in utter chaos in India. Recently, Ms. Banerjee had introduced an interactive tool to expose the lies and falsehood of PM Modi. The web-based tool called Jumla Meter on AITC website claims that since 2014 PM Modi has been on a lying spree and he has been caught multiple times while lying. It quotes different sources to give examples of what Modi said and what the truth is. “I do not speak lies like Modi babu (Mr. Modi). Will call him “Expiry Babu” from now on,” she said, indicating that Modi’s BJP will get defeated in the Lok Sabha election. Earlier, she had said that the end of Modi Government has come, adding that Modi has ruled for 5 years by using law-enforcement agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Income Tax (IT) Department, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to target his opponents. “Expiry date of Modi Government is here. He has ruled for five years with the help of CBI, IT, and ED,” Ms. Banerjee stated.

According to the party, thousands of people had gathered to attend Rahul Gandhi's roadshow after he filed his nomination. His sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had accompanied him. “My brother, my truest friend, and by far the most courageous man I know. Take care of him Wayanad, he won’t let you down,” Priyanka Gandhi appealed to the voters. Congress had announced that Rahul Gandhi would contest from the Kerala district in addition to the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh from where he has been winning since his first election in 2004. While BJP says that the Congress president is going to Wayanad because he is expected to lose his Amethi seat to BJP’s Smriti Irani, Congress counters, saying its president wants to stand with the people of South India who are facing increasing hostility from PM Narendra Modi. With Kerala's largest tribal population, Wayanad shares borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The election in Wayanad will take place on April 23 and Amethi on May 6. The counting of votes for the national election will be held on May 23.

EVM Frauds Reported to Help BJP in Lok Sabha Election of India Instead of boycotting the elections till the elections are held on paper ballots, the naive politicians are taking half-hearted measures of holding useless press conferences and going to the ineffective Supreme Court. Leaders of a number of opposition parties again claimed on April 14 that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) being used in the ongoing Lok Sabha election have been manipulated to favor Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The opposition leaders decided to move the Supreme Court again to demand verification of at least 50% of votes cast in election against the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). Leaders of 21 opposition parties, including the Congress, Telugu Desam Party, Samajwadi Party, Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India (Marxist), jointly addressed a press conference in Delhi on April 14 to highlight the extreme glitches in the EVMs. While most political leaders are not quite educated in India, they fail to understand that it is not safe to use EVMs even with VVPAT. The machines can be secretly programmed to deliver desired election results even when the VVPAT counting happens. People in Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh) alleged on April 11 that no matter who they vote for, all the votes were automatically going to BJP. The voting for the election began on April 11 in 20 states for 91 Lok Sabha seats. According to reports, a BSP candidate Malook Nagar, who also went there to make an inquiry, blamed the BJP government in the State and at the Centre for installing faulty EVMs. He alleged this is a large scale conspiracy by the BJP while EVMs have been tempered to malfunction so that all the votes should go to the BJP candidates. However, local administrative officials have refuted the allegations saying that there was no problem in the machines but agreed to change some of the machines. The faulty EVMs also led to delay of commencement of polling in several constituencies of Andhra Pradesh. Reports suggest many voters returned home without casting their votes due to the problems with EVMs across the State. Earlier, on April 8, the Supreme Court had ordered that VVPAT slips of five randomly selected EVMs in every constituency be counted instead of just one EVM in the elections. The court had passed the order on a petition filed by the 21 opposition parties. However, after observing the EVM frauds, the opposition parties say that the Supreme Court order is insignificant and they will approach the top court again to complain about the vulnerability of EVMs.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused BJP of programming the EVMs to win elections. The opposition parties will carry out a nationwide campaign to highlight the EVM frauds allegedly being committed by BJP in connivance with the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Opposition Leaders Complaining about EVM Frauds in India Meanwhile, BJP said that by blaming EVMs the opposition parties are trying to find excuses for their impending defeat in Lok Sabha polls. A research paper “Security Analysis of India’s Electronic Voting Machines” has analyzed the faults in the EVMs and how they can be exploited to change the election results fraudulently. But the Indian politicians are not taking the right steps to resolve the EVM issue. Instead of boycotting the elections till the elections are held on paper ballots, the naive politicians are taking half-hearted measures of holding useless press conferences and going to the ineffective Supreme Court. Obviously, BJP will win again on EVMs and the opposition leaders will keep crying for the next 5 years.

Theater Artists to Voters: Vote Against Modi’s Hateful BJP The coming elections are without doubt the most critical in the history of independent India. As the Lok Sabha election is around the corner, more than 800 theater artists in India have appealed to the voters to vote out the divisive politics from power, referring to the hateful politics of BJP government under PM Narendra Modi. The joint statement in 12 languages (English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Assamese, Telugu, Panjabi, Konkani,Urdu, and Gujarati) and the names of the signatories have been released. As on April 8, more than 800 artists had signed the appeal. They include top actors such as Amol Palekar, Girish Karnad, Mita Vasisht, and Naseeruddin Shah. Since colonial times, according to their statement, Indian theater makers have celebrated India's diversity through their work. The statement adds that theater makers in India have a long and proud tradition of standing against forces of religious sectarianism, chauvinism, narrowness, and irrationality.
Theatre for Democracy Today, according to their statement, the very idea of India is under threat. Today, song, dance, laughter is under threat. Today, our beloved Constitution is under threat. The institutions that have to nurture argument, debate, and dissent have been suffocated, the statement adds. To question, to call out lies, to speak the truth, is branded ‘anti-national’. The seeds of hatred have entered our food, prayers, and festivals, the artists complain about the

despotic Modi government. “The ways in which this hatred has seeped into our daily fabric are alarming and it has to STOP.” The coming elections are without doubt the most critical in the history of independent India. A democracy must empower its weakest, its most marginalized. A democracy cannot function without questioning, debate, and a vibrant opposition. All this is being concertedly eroded by the current government. The BJP, which came to power five years ago with the promise of development, has given free rein to Hindutva goons to indulge in the politics of hate and violence, the artists assert in their statement. The man (Modi) who was portrayed as the savior of the nation five years ago has destroyed the livelihoods of millions through his policies. He promised to bring back black money; instead, rogues have looted the country and run away. The wealth of the rich has grown astronomically, while the poor have become even poorer. “We, theater practitioners of India, appeal to the people of India to help safeguard the Constitution and our secular ethos. We appeal to our fellow citizens to vote for love and compassion, for equality and social justice, and to defeat the forces of darkness and barbarism,” the artists appealed. “Our appeal – vote bigotry, hatred, and apathy out of power. Vote against the BJP and its allies. Vote to empower the weakest, protect liberty, protect the environment, and foster scientific thinking. Vote for secular democratic, inclusive India. Vote for the freedom to dream. Vote wisely.”

BJP Releases Cheat Sheet, Promises to Build Ram Temple Although a conflict has been persisting between Hindus and Muslims of India about the construction of Ram temple, BJP has made the promise to entice Hindu voters. While an election manifesto in India is a kind of cheat sheet to make false promises and hoodwink the gullible voters, BJP has released its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The BJP government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completely failed on all fronts during its tenure of 5 years. But the party has made a slew of new promises to woo the voters. Today, rampant corruption, extreme lawlessness, and unprecedented unemployment are disturbing the 1.3 billion people of India. But instead of addressing these crucial issues, BJP has promised to make a temple of a fictional character Lord Ram (believed to be a Hindu God) in Ayodhya. The party said in its manifesto that it will explore all possibilities within the framework of the Indian Constitution to facilitate the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. While a conflict has been persisting between Hindus and Muslims of India about the construction of Ram temple, BJP has made the promise to entice Hindu voters who are in majority in India. Modi and BJP also have promised to make India a Hindu Rashtra (a nation only for people who belong to the Hindu religion). And in the current Modi rule, all attempts are being made to persecute Muslims in India. As Modi won the 2014 election by exploiting the religious sentiment of Hindu voters (almost 80% of people in India are Hindus), he is actually a communal politician. In order to get the Hindu votes, he can even resort to violence against minority communities. Modi, who was an accused in the Gujarat riots of 2002 in which nearly 2,000 Muslims were murdered, won the Lok Sabha election on the promise that he will make India a Hindu Rashtra where local Muslims will not be treated as true Indians. Most Hindu voters bit the bait and voted for Modi as a religious demagogue rather than a wise leader. The dilemma began for Indian people as soon as Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014 because he is not trained to manage any field that requires professional competence. In the 2002 Gujarat riots, while thousands of Muslims were killed, there were incidents of rape, robbery, and widespread destruction of property affecting Muslims.
Narendra Modi (file photo). Courtesy: PIB It was alleged that the killings were executed at the behest of Modi who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Although Indian courts have almost exonerated Modi in this case, most Muslims in India still believe that Modi was responsible for Gujarat massacre. The Supreme Court of India has decided to reopen the Gujarat riots case. According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the attacks against Muslims in Gujarat were actively supported by state government officials and the police. Police told Muslims, “We don’t have any orders to save you.” As a result, the U.S. administration denied visa to Modi in view of the allegations of human rights violations against him in the 2002 incidents of riots and carnage. But now as he has become the PM of India, Modi is visiting the U.S. frequently because now he enjoys political immunity. During his visit in India in 2015, the U.S. President Barack Obama did not mince his words when he expressed his concern over the communal violence and religious hatred in the country under Modi’s leadership. He also suggested that the Indian government must ensure religious freedom for all its citizens. While all the odds are stacked against Modi and his government, BJP has released the election manifesto to hide its failures and make more false promises. If the electronic voting machines (EVMs) did not favor BJP in the Lok Sabha election, it will be almost impossible for BJP to win.

Environmental Damage and Pollution in India Appeal to Global Community A new IQAir AirVisual report, which covered 3,000 cities of the world, has revealed that Gurugram (a.k.a. Gurgaon) a suburb of India’s capital New Delhi is the most polluted city of the world while 22 of the top 30 polluted cities are in India. Also, Delhi remains the most polluted capital across the world. As pollution levels remain dangerously high throughout the year in India, all travelers including business executives, tourists, and diplomats need to exercise utmost caution while planning to visit India – particularly India’s capital New Delhi. Moreover, companies and investors must not come to Delhi for setting up their businesses or for trade conferences as pollution can harm them as well as their families. Foreigners who have come to stay in India for their work, should preferably go back to their countries. Or, at least, they should not keep their children with them because Delhi’s pollution is very harmful for children. Delhi Government, the Indian Government, and the pollution-control agencies are not taking proper steps to control pollution because most politicians and bureaucrats in India are corrupt, uneducated, and careless. The extreme pollution in Delhi is being compared to the poisonous gas chambers used by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust for the genocide of millions of European Jews. As pollution in Delhi / India is harmful to millions of Indians as well as people in other parts of the world with its impact on global warming and climate change, its lethal effect is equivalent to weapons of mass destruction. The Indian government - including bureaucrats and politicians - is causing serious environmental damage which is harmful for the entire planet. Therefore, the global community including the UN and the U.S. Department of State and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) must impose strict economic, diplomatic, and trade sanctions on India and Indian officials.
