Re~Prose Welcome to 2018 2018 is off to a rapid start here at the RSA... unbelievable that we are two-months into the year already, not only that the start of 2018 has been positive. We kicked off the year with two of our more important Gateway Tradeshows: National Home Builders Association Tradeshow in Orlando, FL, and World of Concrete in Las Vegas, NV. These two tradeshows resulted in over 250 news leads for the RSA and 15 (and counting) sales, 4 of which were sold directly from the tradeshow floor. The Gateway Program continues to be beneficial to the RSA and we are constantly searching for new opportunities to enhance the program ever further as a way of benefitting all of the RSA Members. We have 3 more tradeshows left in 2018 and I think they will provide some great potential to the RSA and its members. Our newsletter, re~Prose, will also undergo some significant changes as we kick off 2018. The publication will now occur once every other month. This change reflects the comments in our annual member survey in which the RSA Membership reported that though they enjoyed the newsletter the content was a bit light in terms of providing value to the membership. This change will allow us to provide additional benefit, while still providing great and original content. Looking ahead to the remainder of 2018 we have some great and positive

changes coming both for the Executive Office and the RSA Membership. One of the biggest goals is to improve the overall form and function of the RSA website. The website is a crucial repository of information and at present we lack the ability to quickly find information that is vital to the overall success of members.
We want a website that will quickly allow you to log on, grab the information you need, and continue to operate your business without delay... because you are unable to locate a document that is vital to your operations. This will be one of the many brand improvement changes we look to implement in 2018. We will be discussing other fascinating improvements as we get closer to developing them. Lastly, I will be reaching out to each of you over the course of the year. My goal is to develop a stronger rapport with each of you and really hone in on what value the Marketing and Communications department can deliver to you the member, but also the wider membership. I look forward to speaking with each of you and can’t wait to see where 2018 takes us!

Industry "Pulse" Construction Data
ction constru updates
Construction Spending While often revised in subsequent months, construction spending figures each month from the U.S. Commerce Department examine the private and public construction sectors. Within the private sector, the report tracks single-family residential, multifamily residential and nonresidential. Latest report: February 1, 2018 / Next release: March 1, 2018 A robust job market, low interest rates and post-natural disaster building all contributed to the month's strong spending report. Construction Employment The labor shortage has consistently been a major challenge for construction companies. Each month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases job gains or losses in the industry and divides the figures into residential and nonresidential sectors. Latest report: February 2, 2018 Next release: March 9, 2018
Though strong employment figures point to industry strength in the near future, contractors should monitor inflation that could push material and labor prices higher. Construction adds 36K jobs in January By Kim Slowey • Feb. 5, 2018
Dive Brief:
The U.S. construction industry added 36,000
net new jobs in January, with the lion's share of more than 26,000 being added in the specialty trade segment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Construction employment grew by 226,000 positions over the last 12 months.
Dive Brief:
Construction spending increased 0.7% in
December from a revised November figure of $1.245 trillion to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.253 trillion, the U.S. Census Bureau. This represents the fifth-straight month of spending increases and a record spending high this year, according to MarketWatch.
The nonresidential sector slid in January,
decreasing by 2,300 jobs for the month. The slide, according to Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Chief Economist Anirban Basu, could be attributed to market saturation in certain parts of the country. Heavy and civil engineering grew by 6,300 new new jobs, which Basu said could indicate a lift in public construction spending.
The 0.7% rise, according to a Reuters report
published in CNBC, beat analyst estimates by 0.3%, as both private and public construction performed well during the last month of 2017. A robust job market, low interest rates and postnatural disaster building all contributed to the month's strong spending report, MarketWatch reported.
Though strong employment figures point to
On a year-over-year basis, 2017 construction
spending increased 3.8% to $1.23 trillion, the smallest increase in six years, Bloomberg reported. A lag in power and manufacturing construction projects contributed to a slow 0.6% increase in private nonresidential construction. Public spending decreased 2.5% while residential spending increased 10.6%.

Kevin's Corner Hello RSA Members and a belated Happy New Year to you from us at the RSA. While winter in Colorado didn’t fully start until mid-February, the 2018 year at the RSA has been at a hectic pace starting with two Canon Gateway tradeshows in January. Once again we exhibited at the International Homebuilders show in Orlando and the World of Concrete in Las Vegas, where we showcased the new TX3000MFP from Canon. We managed to close 6 sales on the show floor between the two shows which is a first for the program. Dan Schoenherr has closed another 10 and is working a lead list of 250 contacts. In March at the McCormick Center in Chicago, the Gateway Program will be exhibiting at Global Shop https://www.globalshop.org/ highlighting Canon’s Pro Series printers for retail POP applications. Global Shop is the tradeshow for the Point of Purchase Association International (POPAI.com) now part of Shop, the global retail trade association As we roll into February, we’re busy planning for the 2018 spring meeting which happens April 19-21 at Paradise Point in San Diego. https://www.destinationhotels. com/paradise-point.

Chances are if you haven’t changed your marketing efforts in the last 2 years, you should have! Even more if you aren’t consciously looking at your company messaging and client perception, you should be! Why? Because like everything else in our industry your client demographics are changing rapidly and you may not be selling to the same contacts or in some cases even the same generation. You definitely are selling some different products and services. Branding is the basis of all effective Marketing Programs and Demographics is a key element of Branding.
