FEATURED BUSINESS LEADER

Dr. Jason

Karp 14 | RSF MAGAZINE • rsfmagazine.com

RSF Magazine: Please tell us a little about your personal story? Dr. Jason Karp: I was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Marlboro, New Jersey when I was 9 years old. After moving around a lot for school, I decided to move to a beautiful place after graduation, so I chose San Diego, but am still a New Yorker at heart (you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take Brooklyn out of the boy!). I started running track in sixth grade and it has been an integral part of my life ever since. My chocolate binges and sugar cereal breakfasts aside, every day of my life is influenced by my running. I run so I don’t lose sight of who I was yesterday and who I might become tomorrow. It gives me private time for personal reflection. When I was a kid, my dream was to compete in the Olympics. As I got older, I realized that I don’t have the extraordinary talent that it takes to run at that level. But I’ve created a life that allows me to run as much as I want and when I want and do what I love. Because I work for myself, my work and my life are completely intertwined; there’s no delineation between the two. I have recently been selected to run the masters half marathon at the 19th World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 17-30, 2013.

racing ever since and became fascinated with the science of athletic performance. This fascination brought me to places I wouldn’t have been to otherwise to study the science of sport and exercise. After completing my master’s degree, I was offered a job as a head cross country coach at a college in New Jersey. Being only 24 years old, I was one of the youngest head college coaches in the country. After a couple of years coaching college and high school track and cross country and personal training at a gym, I went back to school for my doctorate in exercise physiology. While I was in school, I started coaching runners privately and freelance writing for magazines, and created a business out of it. Now I spend my time coaching runners, personal training, writing, traveling to speak at conferences and clinics, and all the brainstorming and pursuit of a dream that goes into being an entrepreneur. RSF Magazine: What is your business mission? Dr. Jason Karp: The mission of RunCoachJason.com is to help runners of all different abilities meet their physical potential by applying principles of physiology and scientific research to their training and to help non-runners meet their fitness goals and get in the best shape of their lives through structured, smart training.

Who would’ve thought that 28 years after I started running competitively, I’d be selected to represent the United States in the masters half marathon at the 2013 World Maccabiah Games in Israel,” said Dr. Karp, whose late Jewish mother worried about him every time he walked out the door to run. “When my twin brother and I had our Bar Mitzvah, our mother gave us the choice to have a party or go to Israel. We chose the party. So now, 28 years later, I have the chance to go to Israel and see it the way I never thought I would… by running. I’m honored to be a part of Team USA.

It’s also my mission to help move the fitness industry forward by mandating similar educational standards and professionalism as other health-related services, such as physical therapy, and creating relationships between fitness professionals and physicians and between fitness organizations and medical and health organizations. Part of this mission is to get exercise physiology to become a required course in medical school so that future physicians have a background in exercise physiology and can begin the process of prescribing exercise for their patients and referring patients to fitness industry professionals.

RSF Magazine: Tell us how you got started in your industry? Dr. Jason Karp: From the time I ran my first race in elementary school as part of the Presidential Physical Fitness Test, I was hooked. The feeling of moving my arms and legs as fast as they could go to get from the start line to the finish line in the shortest time possible was so liberating and challenging and fun. I’ve been in love with running and

RSF Magazine: What services does your company offer that a client may choose from? Dr. Jason Karp: My company specializes in developing runners who want to improve their running without getting injured, although I also work with non-runners who want to lose weight and get fit. Among the services I offer are in-person and email coaching for runners, custom-made

training programs for runners of all levels, consultations to show proper running technique and analyze runners’ training and workouts, personal training workouts using circuit-style exercises and a client’s body weight, Dr. Karp’s Hot Bod Boot Camp, and educational presentations and workshops for fitness companies and coaches. I also have training programs that can be downloaded directly from my website for 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon for beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners. With a

wide variety of options, there’s a service for everyone. I also have a number of books and DVDs on running and fitness, including Running for Women and Running a Marathon For Dummies. RSF Magazine: What makes your business different from others of its kind? Dr. Jason Karp: My services and products are based on a very strong educational foundation, which enables me

to take the guesswork out of clients’ training and help them get remarkable results. To get the results clients want, my first move is to connect with them. I listen. I ask questions. I partner with them so that I can develop the training that will help them succeed. Everything I do includes a high degree of professionalism and passion, a devotion to science, and a keen interest in wanting to help my clients succeed. In 2011, I was honored as the IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year, the highest award in the fitness industry. Unlike other personal trainers, my services are on the same level as those of other educated professionals, like attorneys, psychologists, and physicians. People hire professionals to handle many aspects of their lives, so why not use a professional to help you lose weight, get fit, look great, or run a half-marathon? I’m proud to say that no other personal trainer or running coach has my combination of credentials, accomplishments, and experience. I’ve worked very hard to create a strong platform that directly translates into results for my clients. RSF Magazine: Why should a client choose to trust your services over another? Dr. Jason Karp: My background enables me to help clients in ways they can’t get from anyone else. Clients can trust that what I tell them is based on science and research and on a strong understanding of physiology, rather than on what’s popular or the newest fad. You wouldn’t seek medical advice from someone who didn’t go to medical school or seek legal advice from someone who didn’t go to law school, so why seek weight loss or fitness or running advice from someone who didn’t go to school for that? Unlike other personal trainers or running coaches, this is my full-time, PhD-level career. I don’t just give people workouts based on a whim. I design every detail of a client’s training program, show him or her how to make the most of their training, and guide them along the way so they get results. My system of training is the only system that takes a systematic, science-based approach to provide clients with the best training to achieve their goals and get results, whether it’s to become a better runner or lose weight and get fit. With my services, you get as close to guaranteed results as you can get because the training I provide is based on expertise. Just like people expect their oncologist to know what the research says are the most effective ways to treat

their cancer, they should also expect their personal trainer to know what the research says are the most effective ways to lose weight and improve fitness. RSF Magazine: How did you become an Expert in the Fitness World and Field of Running? Dr. Jason Karp: Many years of education, research, and a devotion to learning. I made the decision a long time ago that I wanted to distinguish myself from all others in the industry, so I made a commitment to become as educated as possible. Being immersed in academia and research for so long enabled me to not only acquire knowledge, it taught me how to think critically, it enabled me to understand the science of fitness and running and, perhaps most importantly, it offered the opportunity to develop and cultivate my own ideas and theories rather than simply follow traditional methods, be fooled by fads and popular media claims, or copy what others are doing. Where can readers go to find more information about your business? Dr. Jason Karp: People can learn more about my services and products on my website at www.RunCoachJason.com. My books are available on my website, on Amazon.com, and in bookstores. If you had to give a piece of advice to potential clients out there, what would it be? Dr. Jason Karp: For people who want to lose weight, my advice is to stop making excuses about not having enough time to exercise, stop wasting time reading diet and weight loss books, and start walking or running around the block every day. There’s nothing about exercise to be intimidated about. Don’t be a weight loss book reader. Be a runner. If you don’t like running, find an activity you love to do and make it become a part of who you are. When that happens, you’ll never have to worry about finding the time to do it. For runners who want to run better and prevent injuries, my advice is to train smarter and more systematically and stop blaming shoes for your injuries. Polarize your training— run hard on hard days to provide stress and run easy on easy days to truly recover. When the training program is designed this way, with both stress and recovery given equal attention and diligence, it is an elegant system that works. rsfmagazine.com • RSF MAGAZINE

CATALINA ISLAND A Sweet Getaway

18 | RSF MAGAZINE • rsfmagazine.com

Catalina Island, which lies just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, defies the concept of niche travel. This is not a destination of narrowly defined recreational appeal. It is truly for everybody – couples, families, adventure seekers, art enthusiasts, eco tourists. Whatever activities you’re seeking – or even if you just want to settle into a beach chair with a good book – you’ll find your heart’s desire here.

A

fter disembarking from one of Catalina Express’ speedy boats to the island, as a guest you will be sure to find a wealth of possibilities for fun, relaxation and enrichment when you travel to Catalina Island.

Just for two

walkway stretches from the Catalina Express boat moorings to Descanso Beach, a mile away. Along this route, couples can poke into quaint shops for island gifts, or linger at any number of establishments for a drink or a bite to eat. Another popular stop is Lloyd’s Confectionary, for an ice cream cone to accompany the walk out to the Casino and Descanso Beach.

Catalina Island has been a romantic getaway since Al Jolson sang about finding his love in Avalon nearly a century ago. The lodging options range from cozy bed and breakfasts and charming cottages to well-appointed condos, beachfront hotels, and four-star accommodations and suites. Tandem bikes can be rented in Avalon for a leisurely ride around town. But a hand-in-hand stroll along the waterfront is every bit as appealing. Avalon is a pedestrian-friendly town, with no motor vehicles allowed in a broad stretch of the waterfront district. A

Slip beneath the crystal-clear waters of aptly named Lover’s Cove for some snorkeling. Browse for a keepsake of your visit at the Catalina Festival of Art in the fall. Or splurge on a stay at the romantic Inn on Mt. Ada, which perches on a hilltop above Avalon and the bay. This is the luxurious former home of William Wrigley Jr., who once owned the island, and every stay includes use of a golf cart. The views are breathtaking, and the accommodations are four-star. Not surprisingly, Catalina Island is an irresistible destination for weddings and honeymoons.

Bring the Whole Clan Visitors from age 9 to 90 can be quite content here, making the island a popular escape for families. Bikes may be rented at the waterfront for a pedal up the canyon to the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden. Tours leave regularly for the island’s interior, where everyone in the group will be on the lookout for Catalina’s iconic bison, who graze placidly on the hillsides. Dad might want to try his hand at the oldest golf course in Southern California – a 9-hole, par-3 layout that was established in 1892. Mom will want to browse the shops along Crescent Avenue for island gifts. Grandparents might enjoy Catalina’s rich history, which is presented on a tour of the Casino or a visit to the Catalina Island Museum. And everyone in the family is sure to enjoy a guided kayak-and-snorkel tour along the coast to Frog Rock, which includes a picnic on the beach.

Spirit of Adventure Are you ready for this? A zip line that stretches 1,100 feet, propels you 300 feet above Descanso Canyon and reaches speeds of 45 mph! Safely operated by the Santa Catalina Island Company, it awaits thrillseeking visitors who want to travel to Catalina Island, and is just one of many adventures available on the island. Other options include parasailing, Hummer/ Jeep tours of the interior, kayaking along the picturesque coast, hiking to the top of a rugged mountain ridge for unparalleled views of the island, the ocean and the Mainland, a stand-up paddleboard rental, or a bicycling excursion from Avalon to Two Harbors.

Catalina Island is truly for everybody – couples, families, adventure seekers, art enthusiasts, eco tourists.

A Feast of Art The beauty of Catalina Island has been enchanting artists for decades, and it has been a popular place to film movies since the silent film era. Art is celebrated in a number of special events, offered throughout the year. There are art shows and sales, film festivals, special museum exhibits, wine festivals, ballroom dancing, and, for the foodies, the Taste Around Avalon.

Eco Sensibilities Catalina Island represents a fascinating crucible of ecological diversity. A number of plants that are indigenous to the island can be found nowhere else in the world. The same is true of the Catalina Island fox, which has made an impressive recovery from near-extinction. The Catalina Island Conservancy is the steward of the island’s

natural world, and it has a number of offerings that provide visitors a glimpse into this impressive biodiversity. Its naturalists lead the popular Jeep Eco Tour into the interior, which can be booked for a two-hour excursion up to a full day, with a hike built into it, if you wish. In summer, the Conservancy also offers guided hikes Friday through Tuesday. And some of the most exciting news is 11 bald eagle chicks have hatched this spring in seven Catalina Island nests. These new additions to the Island’s eagle population continue one of Catalina’s outstanding conservation success stories. Eagle cams placed at some of the nests make it possible for the public to watch the birds on their personal computers. The live feed can be found at www.iws.com. Delivery Providers Falling Short of Consumer Needs…

We Want It

NOW!

UPS was founded in 1907, and it’s safe to say that we are living in an entirely new world now. Are logistics and delivery companies offering service that meets the needs of the modern lifestyle?

22 | RSF MAGAZINE • rsfmagazine.com

U

PS, FedEx, DHL, TNT, Google Shopping Express, eBay Now, Amazon, Postmates, Shutl, and Exec are all in the delivery business - from the logistics giants that ship products all over the world to the last-mile delivery startups that do so locally, all to consumers who have ordered them. They have taken over the online marketplace by offering almost anything at the touch of a button, and many goods can be now delivered same-day. But can this delivery system be improved? Is it possible to make delivery truly on-demand? The answer is yes. But the problem for consumers is that you can’t get what you want when you want it, even if you want it now. From logistics giants like UPS, FedEx, DHL, and TNT, to major tech players like Google Shopping Express, Ebay Now, Amazon Fresh and Amazon Local Express Delivery, to startups like Postmates, TaskRabbit, Shutl, and Exec, even to the United States Postal Service - all of whom are attempting same-day delivery - no one is meeting the real needs of modern day men and women who have immediate lifestyle needs that must be filled, but currently can’t be, by these shipping and delivery service providers. It’s not that they don’t fill a market need; they do. But not the real needs of people in their everyday lives. In the digital age, where information and products are becoming more and more available at the touch of a button, people are beginning to demand what they want when they want it (or at most, within one hour). Google, eBay, Amazon, Postmates, Shutl, and many more are all searching and even trying to implement systems, such as Google Shopping Express and eBay Now, that successfully accomplish the “last mile delivery” demands that people have. But none of them have a functioning system that works.

Inventor Mark B. Barron says, “Sweet spots in the world such as London, Paris, New York, West Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, Rancho Santa Fe, and many more have a huge demand for one-on-one-personal assistance on-demand with mobile telepresence and a direct communication ability, which can get people what they want, when they want it.” What about the businessman who wants a case of Moet & Chandon champagne at his office within one hour for his last-minute decision to have an office party? Or the woman who has an event to attend in two hours and found the perfect dress online at the local boutique - but her husband has the car all day? What about the air conditioning technician who’s on a job, and needs a part that, on Amazon or eBay, he could only get in a week? With Consumeron, the gap is finally bridged between the want or need to have it now, and the delivery system that can meet that need. Consumeron was developed and patented by Beverly Hills-based inventor and futurist Mark B. Barron, who says, “The technology is here.” But who is offering it to the world? Not UPS, FedEx, DHL, or TNT. And not Google Shopping Express, eBay Now, or Amazon. Nor Shutl, Task Rabbit, Postmates, or Exec. Yet. Barron believes he’s got the best system of true personal assistance on demand. With live streaming video over 4G networks, GPS, and mobile pay technology, there is finally a solution for last mile delivery. This user-friendly and affordable service creates jobs, saves consumers valuable time and reduces carbon emissions. America and the rest of the world is ready for a last mile solution. UPS, FedEx, DHL, and TNT do what they do well. Google and eBay are trying to do what they do, better. Amazon needs this to eliminate the shipping process entirely from their system. They all need this technology in order to make it a reality. That’s right, they need it. At best, they can deliver something to your door within several hours. As great as that is, is it good enough? Not anymore.

Consumeron also uses cutting-edge barcode and visual search technology to make life even easier for you. Want to know the nutrition facts on those cookies your grabber’s in front of? Let the grabber zap the barcode with their camera, and watch the facts instantaneously pop up on your device. And when it comes time to build your weekly grocery list, forget tedious online searches and detailed data entry – just use your smartphone to snap a photo of the barcodes in your pantry, in the store, or even a picture of the item in an ad, and let Consumeron do the rest.

The tech world has been trying to implement a platform that can effectively deliver products when and where the consumer wants it. Many have failed. Consumeron is the paradigm shift this world needs to truly become a digital world that meets the immediate lifestyle needs of people. “The key to delivering the unique, highly personalized services consumers want in a connected lifestyle, is the combination of telecommunications infrastructure, service integration and the magic of software.”

Technology has upped our standard of living as a whole, and has made itself both a luxury and necessity. With Consumeron technology, a new world of options has opened up to change our expectations of delivery service in today’s modern digital age that finally bridges the worlds of online shopping, brick-andmortar retail, and at your fingertips service. The future is here. We think it’s time the likes of UPS, FedEx, DHL, TNT, Google, Ebay, Amazon, Postmates, Shutl, and Exec joined it. Don’t you? Visit www.Consumeron.com now to learn more about this game-changing technology of the future. No need to wait. The future has arrived.

Business Leadership:

Are You A

Leader?

“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” ~Theodore Roosevelt “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” — John Maxwell

LEADERSHIP DEFINED: The ability and skill to put your plans into action and make your team take part in this whole-heartedly and ecstatically. It is the ability to get other people to do that which they would rather not, without hesitation, because they believe in the cause of the leader they work with or for. Like any other skill, it can also be learned and can be improved with practice.

L

eadership is a process involving conversations and interactions that would result in getting other people more compliant with the language of personal responsibility and commitment. In the process, the leader distinguishes and acknowledges his or her feelings and those of others in order to create effective and trusting relationships.

For leadership to occur, leaders must communicate the vision to the followers in such a way that the followers adopt the vision as their own. Leaders must not just see the vision themselves; they must have the ability to get others to see it also. Numerous techniques aid in this process, including: narratives, metaphors, symbolic actions, leading by example, incentives, and penalties. No matter how one defines leadership, it typically involves an element of vision — except in cases of involuntary leadership and often in cases of traditional leadership. A vision provides direction to the influence process. A leader (or group of leaders) can have one or more visions of the future to aid them to move a group successfully towards this goal. A vision, for effectiveness, should appear as a simple, yet vibrant, image in the mind of the leader; describe a future state, credible and preferable to the present state; act as a bridge between the current state and a future optimum state; appear desirable enough to energize followers and succeed in speaking to followers at an emotional or spiritual level. Some commentators link leadership closely with the idea of management; some would even regard the two as synonymous. If one accepts this premise, one can view leadership as centralized or decentralized, broad or focused, decision-oriented or morale-centered, and intrinsic or derived from some authority. However, a clear distinction between management and leadership is useful. This would allow for a reciprocal relationship between leadership and management, implying that an effective manager should possess leadership skills, and an effective leader should demonstrate management skills. To some, as a broad generalization, managers concern themselves with tasks while leaders concern them-

selves with people. This goodwill and support originates in the leader seeing people as people, not as another resource for deployment in support of “the task”. The manager often has the role of organizing resources to get something done. People form one of these resources, and many of the worst managers treat people as just another interchangeable item. A leader has the role of causing others to follow a path he/she has laid out or a vision he/she has articulated in order to achieve a task. Often, people see the task as subordinate to the vision. For instance, an organization might have the overall task of generating profit, but a good leader may see profit as a by-product that flows from whatever aspect of their vision differentiates their company from the competition. Leadership does not only manifest itself as purely a business phenomenon. But still, a person can excel in both leadership and management. As individuals, top-notch leaders/managers should have confidence in their abilities. They should be graceful with who they are, but still feed the yearning to learn and improve. They should be something of an extrovert—enjoy being and working with people. They should be honest and straight forward. And they should never exclude others because of the lack of certain attributes; instead, they should focus on others’ strengths.

As team captains, they should be dependable, but can change their judgments. They should not be afraid to try new things and if they fail, admit the mistake, but need not apologize for having tried. In case of emergencies, they should be able to change plans quickly, but should be responsible for their actions and be ready to face whatever consequences. They should make decisions, but should easily accept input from others. This world needs more true leaders and good followers. Together, they can create anything. rsfmagazine.com • RSF MAGAZINE

High Net Worth Divorce Living happily ever after is a lofty goal. Unfortunately, not every couple manages to obtain it. When one or both parties are high net worth individuals, a divorce typically presents more complicated issues than otherwise.

H

igh on the list are premarital agreements. “Do you have one?” should be among the first questions an attorney asks a client. For high net worth individuals the answer is usually yes, and if the agreement holds water, the rest of the divorce may be anticlimactic. Enforceable premarital agreements can eliminate spousal support and property issues. If there are no minor children, there’s little left to argue about.

36 | RSF MAGAZINE • rsfmagazine.com

A technically enforceable premarital agreement is not difficult to write. However, whether it holds up in court depends primarily on three factors: active involvement of attorneys on both sides, full disclosure of assets and debts by both sides, and genuine negotiation of the terms. The last one will encourage the judge to conclude that both parties knew what they were doing and reached a fair agreement.

No one expects divorce, but it happens.

If there is no premarital agreement, or it doesn’t have mutual waivers of spousal support, high net worth individuals encounter the fact that there are no computer guidelines for spousal support when the supporting party is a high net worth individual and the supported party isn’t. Spousal support is anyone’s guess in this case, so a long, difficult, and expensive battle over the issue is almost guaranteed. Then there’s the identification of all the assets and debts of both parties, their characterization (separate or community?), their valuation, and their equal division. Again, binding premarital agreements also known as prenuptial agreements, can simplify this process, but its elimination is probably impossible because of some unavoidable uncertainty about who owns what, particularly horses. If there isn’t an agreement, the process tends to be a nightmare. The problem here for the high net worth individual is the variety, complexity, and sheer number of such an individual’s assets, not to mention the likelihood that they are scattered all over the world. Even if the process turns out to be largely an accounting problem, just gathering the required information and organizing it can be mind boggling.

If there are minor children, visitation, custody and child support also impose unusual difficulties in a high net worth divorce. (Again, there are no computer guidelines when the supporting party is wealthy.) More importantly, high net worth individuals with children are likely to be young entrepreneurs or business owners who are constantly on the move. This poses a problem, because unpredictable travel means that a regular time sharing schedule is impossible. In turn that means never ending arguments over who has the kids when. Furthermore, if only one party travels, the other party (Mom, more often than not), will win primary custody of the kids. High net worth individuals typically don’t like losing, so here we have another high conflict situation. As someone observed, “Money isn’t everything, but it sure beats the hell out of what’s second best” However, it tends to be something of a draw back when “Happily Ever After” turns into incompatibility. No one expects divorce, but it happens. So get your premarital agreements ( prenuptial agreements) organized and as detailed as possible, in the event of this unforeseen circumstance.
