“ I AIN’T DOWN YET” A Story of Hope
..In a red silk dress.. when there’s girl enough on me to wear one. And then, some day, with all my might and all my may.. I’m gonna learn to read and write I’m goan’ to see what there is to see, so if you go from nowhere on the road to somewhere and you meet anyone. You know it’s me. I’m goan’ to move from place to place and find a house with a goldn stair, and if that house is red and has a big brass bed I’m liiiivin’ there! People ask me all the time, Kathleen, where do you get your energy, passion and zest for life? Well, I can say, that my parents in their late 80’s are still dancing. I can say that my 78 year old aunts are doing Tai Chi, painting, traveling and visiting wineries. I could say that it’s because I am Italian, and Italians are always happy. It’s all that, plus my inexhaustible curiosity of the body. My efforts have become streamlined to where I have learned to use my brain in a way that is becoming more efficient in thought and movement. It’s partly genetic, partly learned and unlearned behaviors that became habits. That said, the ‘unsinkable’ song has been engraved in my thoughts ever since I was a little girl. It seems that for all these years I truly believed I was unsinkable. It gave me permission to believe that I could do anything and be anything that I wanted to be. Today, that is how I feel and have learned to carry myself. I know this conscious way of changing my thoughts kept the pointless and meaningless crap out of my brain that was taking up way too much room and wasted energy. I did learn to read and write. I traveled the world ‘to see what there is to see’. I have ‘moved from place to place’ and found a house with a golden stair. I painted the door red. It had a big brass bed, and I lived there! “Hope, that’s just what I have, hope for someplace better”. My song and dance continues.
I ain’t down yet, and even if I was, you’d sure never hear it from me! ..as my little sister Alice and I would passionately belt out this song from The Unsinkable Molly Brown. We sang and danced in unison and still do today.

Ohh, I hate that word down, but I love the word UP, cuz UP means hope. And that’s what I got, hope, for someplace gooder, someplace.. I don’t know, that’s cleaner and shinier…ah hell, if I have to eat catfish heads all my life, can’t I have them off a plate once?
I realize now that as Alice and I would sing and dance, the underlying emotion felt by the words was the key to impressing the brain and has literally cemented new neuro pathways. I created a belief and attitude that has been the fuel for my passion.
I knew that somewhere deep inside of me, there was this little genius baby ready to explore this wonderful thing called life. Knowing full well that my continued curiosity would keep the fire burning I knew I was meant to teach and inspire women back to their core, as I continued my own journey to the center of my true core, my whole being. This personal journey required a tremendous amount of hope. Hope that I would eventually find the pathway to my purpose in this life. The best description for Hope comes from one of my favorite books “No Man is an Island” by Thomas Moore.
My life thus far hasn’t been all roses for me. I have had several bumps along the way, kind of like skiing moguls. Sometimes the bump would knock me right off my bum. I pick myself up (sometimes with a helping hand) and get back on course. The worst thing about falling is that when it happens too often you begin to lose hope. And the worst part is you don’t even realize it when it is happening. In my own life after a few too many bumps I began to lose hope. In order to avoid “falling” I moved towards safer territory. I evaluated my own movement journal.
As I kept moving forward in my curiosity, I realized there was a whole other core, an inner core, the true core, and it had a bottom to it called the pelvic floor! It wasn’t until my move to San Diego in 2009 that I made this discovery at a Pelvic Floor workshop taught by my current mentor and partner Dr. Theresa Nesbitt, The Movement Doctor. She had the missing piece, the true core which included the pelvic floor. After multiple emails to Dr. Nesbitt, she recognized my relentless curiosity with the brains connection to the core and welcomed me into her world.
‘Hope is proportionate to detachment. It brings our souls into the state of the most perfect detachment. In doing so, it restores all values by setting them in their right order.’ Hope empties our hands in order that we may work with them. It shows us that we have something to work for, and teaches us how to work for it. If my intelligence is a gift from God, then I must show my trust by making use of my intelligence. If my freedom is a gift, I must show my trust by making use of my free will and let hope purify and strengthen my human liberty and raise me to the autonomy of this beautiful God given human life experience.’ Because of hope, my path started to unfold more and more. I have learned to monitor my thoughts and use my intelligence which has molded me into the person I am today. We are genetically capable to make changes. We are not destined to a life of unpleasant childhood or past experiences unless chosen. We must stop telling that old story to our friends, family and therapists. I knew I was evolving when I got in an argument once with a ‘therapist’ because I told him I could change my life with my thoughts and knowledge of the brain to form new neuro networks and deactivate the unwanted brain neuro networks in hopes to promote healthier choices and behavior. He seemed a little perturbed and replied “then why are you here”? I left and never went back to a therapist. According to Dr. Nesbitt, our mind is our “movement journal”. It’s where we keep track of what we have done; what we have observed being done and plans for how we might DO it in the future. It’s the human part of our brain.
As I traveled the world and working with women of all ages, teaching Pilates and core training, I noticed emptiness combined with a loss of hope and passion. Smiles were forced in agony. Slumped postures easily gave away to their emotional state. Foreheads revealed the direction of their thoughts, showing an unpleasantness in their lives.
It has changed my brain, my body and my life - in that order.
My natural inclination was to help these women feel better somehow; to find one thing that they could feel good about to restore their confidence. The more I looked, the easier it became to see something that could bring a smile to their face. It worked very well.
Hope has allowed this wonderful journey to the center of my core to continue to flourish.
In 2008, I thought I finished ‘my journey’. I wanted to inspire other women. I created the DVD, Pilates and Chocolate, to teach women how to manage and sculpt a beautiful body inside and out! Little did I know that was the beginning of my journey and not the end. There was more. I knew one hundred percent of only fifty percent of the core.
Today I continue to mentor privately with Dr. Nesbitt on the latest studies and research on how the brain, true core and pelvic floor work together, and develop programs for women’s wellness.
My hope also remains, to teach and inspire women, to help them with the return of their authentic smile. To restore a posture that exudes confidence and well-being. To redirect the forehead expression that now shouts hope and passion. To return to them the youthfulness they thought was gone forever. I will do this as I have done for myself. Explore their true core and pelvic floor, and rediscover their own inner beauty. Together we will sculpt a mind, body and spirit, in the right order, from the inside out! The Problem with
Annuities Are annuities a good vehicle for retirement planning? It depends on who you ask. While annuities offer the promise of a guaranteed income for life, they’re not always all they’re cracked up to be. Before you buy an annuity, you really need to work with your advisor to determine if it’s a good fit for your situation.

n ethical advisor will help his or her clients objectively evaluate an annuity before making a purchase. Unfortunately, however, some people who sell complicated annuity products may not be acting in such a transparent manner. In a recent case, an independent insurance agent in California received a felony-theft conviction after he sold a complicated annuity to an elderly woman who had exhibited signs of dementia, according to prosecutors. The product in question was an indexed an annuity, a type of insurance product that pays interest that is linked to the performance of stock- and bond-market indexes. Many insurance agents like indexed annuities because they can high commissions from them. However, indexed annuities may also come with extremely steep early withdrawal penalties, which clients may not always be aware of.
This case also draws attention to the importance of fully researching any financial product before you buy. For those with older parents or other elderly loved ones, it also illustrates how critical it is to monitor your loved one’s financial situation and health status. If you notice signs that someone is beginning to suffer from dementia, you may need to take steps to help them manage their affairs so that they don’t fall victim to predatory financial scams.

In the aftermath of the case, insurance agents may now be more cautious when selling these annuities to older clients, since it appears that officials are willing to go after those who appear to be taking advantage of the elderly. Finished in Aviator Grey, the Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection features a contrasting matt bonnet, window and grille surround while inside, the interplay of wood and metal hint strongly at a cockpit theme. A Thommen, aviation-grade clock with blood orange needle tips is embedded in the metal foil upper fascia, complemented by matt black dials for power reserve, speedometer and fuel gauges. The lower fascia is veneered in mahogany, painstakingly shaped by craftspeople just as the early record-setting propellers were fashioned and features Sapele contrast. with Liz Lieberman! Easy ways to stay in shape, and enjoy a fun lifestyle…
A
lthough Summer time is winding down, that doesn’t mean you have to stop all the sports and outdoor activities! Our fine city offers the best climate for an active lifestyle, and I would like to cover some fun ways to stay in shape as we head into the holiday season. Try some of these sports that offer new opportunities to build strength, endurance, increase happiness, and are also fun at the same time! Pick one of these sports to get into, or try all of them, that’s up to you. Each sport offers different benefits, and it’s best to find a sport that offers you the most enjoyment!
TENNIS: This sport is great for a beginner or advanced player that is looking to shed a few pounds and gain some core strength. The quick movement, running to and from the ball is a good way to burn calories. The swinging action when you make contact with the ball will slim down the mid-section and force you to hold that tummy in tight. Both lower and upper extremities will get slight toning with the different techniques you use; sliding will sculpt the inner and outer thigh, while an overhead serve will give you definition through your shoulders.
Precaution: If you have any joint issues, tennis may not be the best sport for you to pick up. The stop and go running will be tough on the joints and may cause inflammation. Take it slow and see how your body reacts.

GOLF: I can tell you first hand that unless you have actually played golf; you won’t understand how much of a workout it can be! Although you are riding around in a cart, and there is not much cardio involved, golf is a game that focuses about 90% on core strength. When you play, your swing will get its drive directly from your back muscles, oblique’s, and abdominal muscles. The swinging action will tone and tighten your waistline, and to add a little exercise bonus, try walking the course! I guarantee that when you finish a round of golf, your body will be tired.
Precaution: If you have a shoulder injury/ rotator cuff injury then swimming may not be for your, especially the breast stroke. The overhead motion will aggravate shoulder injuries. Also, if you swim in the ocean be careful with currents and always swim with a buddy or in front of a lifeguard station, the currents can be strong and if you are not a good swimmer you can get tired very quickly.
SURFING: One of my personal favorites! Surfing is a great time, but let me warn you, it’s harder than it looks. Surfing is a total body exercise. You will build great upper body strength from paddling, especially through your shoulders and triceps. You will work all of the muscles in your back, especially the muscles that support your spine. You will use your core muscles while balancing on the board, and your leg muscles to stand. Surfing will give your body a nice lean look. If you are a beginner then try a long board. This will make the whole process easier. Find waves that are fairly small, and I would suggest hiring a professional the first time you go out so they can give you some inside tips.
Precaution: Just about anyone can play golf, and it’s relatively easy on your joints. A big part of the game does involve rotation of the back, so if you have back issues you might want to skip this one. Also, if you have arthritis in your hands be careful! Gripping the club can be strenuous on sensitive hands.
SWIMMING: Swimming is a great activity for anyone because it is extremely gentle on your joints. There are also a lot of different exercises you can do in the water to strengthen but not get injured. Try different techniques to use different muscles. This activity will mostly build upper body strength through the arms and shoulders. If you kick up the pace a little bit then you will also be able to burn ample amount of calories, especially a fast breast stroke. To change things up, you can try swimming in the ocean which will add extra resistance. If you want to work other parts of your body, try the underwater weights, and a kick board to work your glutes!
Precaution: Being out in the ocean can be dangerous, be aware of currents and make sure someone is watching you. If you have back or shoulder problems, skip surfing. Even though you are in the water, the combo of the big board and the strong waves can rattle a gentle body.
HIKING: Hiking is a great leisure activity. It offers beginner levels all the way through advanced levels, and you can decide how difficult you are going to make the hike. One of my favorites is Torrey Pines State Reserve. This hike has a nice variety of hills, which are good to lift and tighten glutes, but also has straight aways to catch your breath, or kick it up a notch and do a light jog. Hiking burns calories but also reduces stress and you are usually located in a very pleasant atmosphere so you won’t even notice you are working out. If you want to increase resistance, add
ankle or hand weights. This will definitely get your heart pumping! Precaution: If you are unstable, or a fall could be detrimental, then I would suggest sticking to a flat surface. Hiking trails are usually rigid and if you don’t have good balance you could run the risk of falling.
RUNNING: Running reduces the risk of stroke and breast cancer. Regular running has become a treatment option for doctors to prescribe to patients who are at a high risk, or early stages, of osteoporosis, diabetes, and hypertension. It reduces the risk of heart attacks, by strengthening the heart and lowering blood pressure. Running maintains the elasticity of arteries incredibly well because as you run your arteries expand and contract nearly three times as much as usual. Running also builds confidence and self-esteem like few other individual sports can; the release of feel good endorphins aids in this benefit.
Precaution: Running can also be very demanding on the body. Injuries can often occur in the joints, feet, legs and hips. These injuries are a result of overexertion, running long distances on hard or uneven surfaces, or poor running form.
When you try your new sports, always remember: - Warm up - Cool Down - Stretch - Stay hydrated. As with any new activities, make sure you listen to your body and do what’s best for you. I am not a leader that is sitting in an office with a closed door all day. I like to interact with customers, sales people, engineers and others in the company. On a daily basis I try to balance my time with strategic planning, operational issues, customer and partner facing initiatives and with sales people. I am also involved in complex pricing structures, contracts, human resource management, product development, roadmap discussions and overall corporate strategy. The days are busy but I love it. RSF MAGAZINE: What makes your business different from others of its kind? We make a difference in people’s lives. Corporations, universities, and governments use our systems in emergencies and for daily operational use to communicate with their employees, suppliers and partners. It’s really cool technology that you can see and hear work. For instance, I can send a message to a ten thousand people in multiple languages and contact them on whatever device they use – a phone, through sms, email, pager, etc. More importantly, I can solicit a response in real time and then take action. We have a robust text-to-speech engine that converts text to audio for quick dissemination of information. You can even immediately connect people to a conference call or route a response to another number, like an Emergency Operations Center. You can do all of this easily through a web-based SaaS application. Our technology has never experienced a failure because we have a huge infrastructure supporting nine co-located data centers in the US, Canada and Europe. Today more than ever, companies are focused on governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) – MIR3 is an important part of the message delivery platform to address these broader requirements. Moreover, we are working on pioneering technology that will change the way people communicate and manage their overall work. It will impact Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter and all the corporate message platforms that drive enterprise communications. RSF MAGAZINE: What have been major obstacles/stepping stones that you overcame to achieve your success? Becoming a manager can be very difficult and is not for everyone. When I become a first-line manager more than 15 years ago, it was difficult because you don’t necessarily have decision making authority and its more difficult to drive revenue because you really have to rely on your team and their skills. Moreover, there is a distinct difference between managing and leadership. Becoming an effective leader can be complex and requires some very solid skills in people management, vision creation, motivation, inventing and relating. At MIR3 executive coaching by our CEO and continuous feedback from other members of the management team has enabled me to refine my leadership skills and work toward continuous personal improvement. I believe it’s important to be introspective and constantly challenge your own personal mental map. A leader must be adaptive, compassionate, think creatively and strategically, make swift decisions sometimes based on limited information, and most importantly be able to work with and know how to motivate people. An effective leader doesn’t lead but rather is followed. It’s all about the people, the message you deliver and how you deliver it. There have been many challenges on the road to success and I have also made many mistakes. The key is to really learn from your mistakes, take personal inventory and find ways to constantly improve yourself. Most important is to let go of your ego and focus on genuinely helping others. What is most rewarding is see others succeed and grow. RSF MAGAZINE: Where do you see your business growth within the next 5 years? Technology innovation is moving fast these days, so five years are a very long time. Over the next 18-24 months we will completely dominate our market. Currently MIR3 is in the coveted Gartner 2012 Leadership Quadrant and we intend to maintain and defend that position. To date, our firm has been self-funded by a small group of investors that includes some of the most prominent people in the Rancho Santa Fe area and we have significant financial backing by fantastic tier one bankers. Our CEO and CFO have done an outstanding job building the company with limited investment while also maintaining positive EBITDA numbers.

staying fit and active. I also love waterskiing, volleyball, soccer, and and a host of other sports. Healthy food is important to me so Jimbo’s and Urban Plates in Del Mar are favorites as well as the Market in RSF (best food ever). I also enjoy hanging out around the plaza in Del Mar sipping on some wine from time to time or taking clients to Poseidon, they love coming to San Diego and enjoying the beach scene. The Malarky restaurants always seem to have a fun vibe so from time to time I’ll step into Burlap, Searsucker or the new Herringbone in La Jolla. I also really enjoy art and music. I travel to Europe about once a quarter and Paris is the favorite – really amazing. Musically I am an open book but I really like Jazz having played drums through most of my youth. This summer I saw Chris Botti at Thornton Winery – it was an unbelievable concert and he is also a great guy. I also caught Seal at Humphreys and had a backstage meet-and greet pass which was epic – to hear his song “Amazing” live was….well amazing! Some people may not know the band Switchfoot but they are iconic in San Diego and Jon Foreman (lead singer) is awesome. He did a special intimate benefit concert in July that was incredibly powerful. I love acoustic music because it’s raw, real and powerful.
RSF MAGAZINE: If you had to give a piece of advice to business owners out there, what would it be? There are many business owners that have far more knowledge about running a firm than me. I am a strategist and operator but I have not built a company from the ground up. I often find transformational wisdom and Truth in faith that guides me in my life. I strive to be the best man that I can be – and while I often fail it allows me to stay focused on a greater purpose beyond myself. One of my favorite sayings comes from the movie Gladiator “What we do in life echoes in eternity”. But it’s not just what we do but also what we believe. Oxblood It’s the color of blood, it represents passion, desire, yet provokes an elegant appeal. It’s not brown, it’s not purple, not even red, but a mix of several colors. Oxblood is a hue, full, rich and unforgettable. This color goes with everything; it can be a bag, a coat, a dress or pumps. You can even wear it head to toe. Another alternative is to pair Oxblood with neutrals. This is a more subtle approach, but not any less alluring. Oxblood is perfect for fall, its warm, and mysterious and is the perfect match to other fall favorites. Nina Garcia, of Elle Magazine, calls oxblood the new black and I could not agree more.
Duo-Tone No you are not seeing double, it’s the duo-tone trend entering this fall. Panels, geometric shapes and vertical or horizontal lines pump up the typical black and white outfit. Break up traditional solid pieces by implementing dimension to your wardrobe with a hint of surrealism. My favorite is the not so black dress but duotone black and white dress. This is a fresh approach to the little black dress we all have. A white panel, shape line or even accessory will make you stand out in a sea of black. Add a splash of color...and Voila!

Be one of the “cool” girls this fall, yes you heard right… Cool or icy to be more direct. Trace a cool silver shade around the inner corners around the tear duct and draw attention to your eyes while making them look bigger. 70’s Print Yes its’ back, but really it never left. This 70’s trend is everywhere, from printed jeans, blouses, dresses, boots to accessories. My favorite is the printed jeans, in the traditional avocado green, brown, but with shades of blue and purple. It matches beautifully with solid t-shirts, blouses and even other printed tops. Also implement the cropped top in the 70’s motif, try it in a boxy silhouette and don’t forget a 70’s inspired silky trouser and the sheath dress. All are full of personality and yesterday’s psychedelic disco-infused party scene.
Day Clutch The clutch is no longer a night staple accessory; it can now see the light. Large and oversized is this season’s trend. Carry a traditional patent leather, metallic shimmer, a python material, an embossed faux or even a snakeskin clutch and you will not miss a beat. Let’s not leave out suede, gun metal, sequined tweed and the popular chain details some designers have implemented into the oversized day clutch. It does not matter what style, color, pattern or texture combination you choose, this trend is in night and now also during the day.
Gauzy Scarves It is fall after all, so scarves cannot be left out. Let’s leave the bulky, heavy and traditional scarves behind. Instead loop or drape a light gauzy scarf.
