Challenge yourself! Become active at STAR: Join a committee!

We are STAR STAR is the official study association of Rotterdam School of Management and is the largest study association in Europe with over 6,500 members and 300 active members. We support students in their academic, professional and social development to ensure they have the best student life possible.

STAR connects students with their peers and a broad range of companies. This contact is facilitated through numerous activities and events organized by our committees and boards. Each year, over 300 dedicated active members organize around 450 projects for thousands of students. These projects are classified into three pillars on which STAR’s mission

is built, namely: Social, Academic and Career. All RSM students, in all stages of their studies, can take part in our tailored projects.

Are you ready for your next challenge?

We provide our active members with the opportunity to actively develop themselves both personally and professionally. In addition to this, they get access to a network of enthusiastic students and great companies. STAR creates value for every student. Are you ready to start you STAR journey?

This brochure will give you more information about the committees that STAR is recruiting in December 2021 - January 2022. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at recruitment@rsmstar.nl.

What happens if I become active at STAR? Once you are an active member, you will meet many new people. The prime “networking time” is during our weekly drinks on Wednesday. Besides that, you will have the opportunity to join active member weekends, active member gala and many more active member exclusive events!

After your committee kick-off, you will officially start working on your project(s). On average, an 8-hour work week is what you can expect from a position within a committee. However, if you like, you can spend many more hours with STAR! Besides the weekly drinks, we encourage the committees to have a weekly dinner, usually on Wednesday. For active members, STAR organizes amazing theme nights, a Christmas Dinner, Active Members Day, and much more!

Next to the special activities we arrange for our active members, you are of course always welcome to join all other STAR activities! Last but not least, you will have contact with the Board to share your ideas and improvements you would like to implement within STAR. We are always interested in innovative and interesting ideas. We are looking forward to meeting you!

A word from our Project Manager BSc Anna Aapkes My name is Anna Aapkes and I am the Project Manager Bachelor of the XLIVth STAR Board. In my first year studying in a new city I was looking for a way to meet new people to have fun with. During the Eurekaweek, I came in contact with STAR and wanted to become an active member. As an active member in the Events Committee I was able to get in contact with many fantastic people within STAR. We organized parties, the openEUR festival and had lots of fun doing that. On top, we became super close and I made friends for life. In my second year I became the Chairman of the iCare committee, which was super challenging, I gained a lot of organizing and planning skills. Unfortunately the trip was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but my committee and I learned a lot and had an amazing time together. This year, I decided that I wanted to develop myself even further and that is why I decided to apply for a board year at STAR, which tops off my ‘STAReer’. As the Project Manager Bachelor, I am responsible for the supervision and guidance of most bachelor committees. I am looking forward to next year and cannot wait to meet all of you!

Active member in the spotlight Annabel van der Heide “After I started my studies in September and I survived the first few months in Business Administration, it was time to delve into student life. A student association wasn’t quite my thing, but I still wanted to do fun things and meet new people. I soon came across the study association star! I went to a number of get-togethers where there was a cozy atmosphere and found out about the various committees. I signed up for the eurekaweek committee. Together with 5 other students, we organized the eureka week for star. We immediately clicked with each other and had a lot of drinks. Even when Corona was quite a spanner in the works, we saw each other regularly through online meetings. Organizing the Eurekaweek was a difficult task. We worked very hard together and the eureka week

turned out to be a huge success. Even after the Eurekaweek we continued to see each other and we became even closer! After this committee, I wasn’t done at star. I signed up for the events committee. With 5 very nice students we organized the events for star during the year. Even then, Corona still played a major role. My personal favorites were the online wine tasting and the cocktail workshop. We also had a lot of pleasant evenings with this committee, where we ate delicious meals and of course drank lots of drinks. After all, star has ensured that I have met a lot of nice, new people. Some of them I can even call my best friends! I can recommend being active at Star if you are looking for fun, but also educational activities!”

STAR Academy Aside from your committee, the weekly drinks and STAR’s activities, your personal development throughout the year is one of the focus points of STAR and is enabled via the STAR Academy. The STAR Academy is a learning centre within STAR that offers members the opportunity to develop their personal and professional skills.

During the year, the HR manager of the Board organizes several trainings which you can join for free. These trainings can be categorized in hard skills trainings based on your function within the committee (acquisition training and InDesign training) and soft skills trainings (leadership training, conflict management training and more). We value your input as well, to make sure that the provided trainings align with your own personal development goals.

Within your committee there will also be room for plenty of feedback to ensure that your committee works together smoothly. With the chair of the committee, you will organize learning goals meetings and/or TipTop sessions. If you need more guidance within STAR, the HR manager can also help and coach you along the way. If you have any additional questions regarding the STAR Academy, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail to hr@rsmstar.nl.

STAR will make sure you receive suitable training.
