Welcome Message from Sue Lane
We welcome you all to Rolling Stock Networking, an international exhibition focused on Passenger and Freight Rolling Stock, Technical Enhancements, Depot Equipment, Ancillary Services and the Rail Supply Chain.
The show continues to build on its mission to provide high quality, low cost market access to all companies from the largest multinationals to start ups and entrepreneurs.
We are delighted to have added to the opportunities that the show offers to its exhibitors and visitors for RSN 2023.
Cutting through the hyperbole of fashionable industry buzz words, the show is designed to enable companies to meet, build relationships, do business, win work and mutually succeed; be that through innovation, de-carbonisation, energy efficiency, sustainability or the equally important delivery of the everyday products and dependable services upon which the railway industry relies.
We particularly thank Railway-News, Rail Partners, Rail Forum, Railway Industry Association, Jobson James Rail and the many friends that have helped us to shape an event with something for everyone.
RSN remains a show that is organised by railway people for railway people. The event is not owned by a media company and everyone in our team works day to day in the rail industry.
We would like to think that our everyday engagement in the industry has helped us to shape a superb event for you, that whilst affordable and accessible, also delivers high quality opportunities and information to help you to increase your market share in rail.
We are especially pleased to continue our support for the event charity, Railway Children. There are some fantastic raffle prizes, good luck to you all in the draw.
Most importantly we thank our exhibitors and visitors and wish that you all have a very successful show.

Rolling Stock Networking showbigger and better than ever before
Anyone involved in Britain’s healthy rolling stock industry, whether as an operator, maintainer, component supplier, software developer or consultant, is welcome. Just register in advance for a free ticket and easy access on the day.
By Nigel Wordsworth Rail Industry Jounalist and CommentatorHeld in Derby on Thursday 6 July, Rolling Stock Networking (RSN) will be bigger and better than ever in 2023. Nearly 20% more participants than last year will fill the sold-out venue, anxious to tell visitors all about their latest products and services.
And that’s not all! Rail Partners, the trade association for the nation’s train operators, is holding a conference that will be free to attend for visitors to RSN. The Railway Industry Association is assembling a ‘Small Business Showcase’, a much anticipated ‘Meet The Buyer’ event will be hosted by Jobson James Rail, and Rail Forum will be presenting TOCTalk Live – a fast networking opportunity with senior representation from a range of train operators.
Something for everyone
The RSN 2023 exhibition will have something for everyone. UK-based train manufacturers Alstom and CAF will have a strong presence, as will suppliers of all manners of components from seats to train graphics and from cables to windscreen wipers.
Depot operators aren’t ignored, as various exhibitors will be at RSN to discuss everything from doors and jacks to fasteners, coatings and even train washes!
In short, there is something for everyone at Rolling Stock Networking - all under one roof in the centre of the country.
Business opportunities – plain and simple
Organised by rail professionals for rail professionals, Rolling Stock Networking includes all the content you would expect from a major industry event, but without the frills.
There will be 150 exhibitors, all in one arena. Stands are almost all the same size, so the major players have no great advantage over smaller suppliers - they are all able to show their offerings on an equal basis.
Swiss manufacturer Stadler, which has recently supplied new trains to a number of UK operators, will be taking a stand.
The industry’s two main trade associations are each working with their members to present what visitors and exhibitors want to see.
“ RSN is organised by people that work every day in the Rail Industry ”
The Railway Industry Association is presenting a Small Business Showcase, providing high-quality market access opportunities to its smaller members, while Rail Forum will be hosting a Meet the Board event immediately before the show opens, from 8:00 until 9:30 offering a cup of coffee and a breakfast roll to compensate for the early start. While the main show is open, Rail Forum will also be hosting TOCTalk, giving visitors an unrivalled chance to engage with senior representatives from a number of train operators.
Rail Forum, which is based in Derby, has invited delegates who are also members to join them for coffee and a breakfast roll before the Rolling Stock Networking show opens at 9:30. Starting at 8am, guests will be able to engage with a range of board members and guests to discuss strategic, industry direction, challenges, concerns, developments and innovations.
The Rail Forum Guests include:-
• Sarah Spink, Midlands Connect
• Kelly Warburton, GCRE
• Paul Harwood, GBRTT
• Ivan Youd, DBT
• Wendy Richards, DBT
• Jason Groombridge, Porterbrook
• Brian Freemantle, DfT
This early bird event will make an excellent start to a busy day at the Rolling Stock Networking exhibition and is not to be missed.

The Railway Industry Association (RIA), which counts some of the industry’s largest companies among its members, is using Rolling Stock Networking to provide a platform for some of its smallest members to exhibit alongside the industry giants, providing an inclusive opportunity to make contacts, build relationships and increase market share. The economic benefits of developing SMEs is proven to increase employment, create high quality jobs and support the government in its aims for economic recovery and growth.
RIA operations director Gaynor Pates said: “We’re excited to be organising the RIA small business showcase, providing high quality market access opportunities to our smaller RIA Members.
“It is undoubtedly the case that SMEs and micro-companies contribute strongly to the railway with specialist products, innovative products new inventions or dependable everyday products and services.”
Small business that will be exhibiting with RIA at Rolling Stock Networking include:
Complete Cyber
• Hey Me
• Rail Competence & Compliance
• RTS Solutions
• Seetru

“Make sure you come along to see them and take part in this essential event!” Gaynor added.
Talk to TOCs at TOCTalk
Rail Forum is giving Rolling Stock Networking delegates the opportunity to engage with senior representatives from across a range of Train Operating Companies at its novel TOCTalk Live sessions.
Using a ‘fast networking’ format, TOCTalk Live will help delegates understand what is happening within the TOC environment, how to engage in the new budgeting processes and how to support train operators by arranging for them to speak directly to those that are at the cutting edge of National Rail Contracts.
The fast networking process means that there will be no presentations, no PowerPoints and no appointments.
International opportunities
Meet the buyer
More companies than ever before are sending procurement specialists to Rolling Stock Networking to take part in the Meet The Buyer event organised by Jobson James Rail.
For those visitors to Rolling Stock Networking wishing to expand their international business, a discussion with international trade adviser Bill Smith should be on the agenda.
Bill Smith is an international trade adviser specialising in advanced manufacturing and rail who supports the Midlands Engine, which is part of the Department of Business and Trade (DBT). He will be in the Meet the Buyer section and appointments can be sought through the Meet the Buyer application process, drop in appointments with Bill are presently available.
Alstom is sending four procurement representatives to make sure that as many companies as possible have the chance to meet with them.
A total of 11 TOCs will be participating as well as two owning groups, the Great British Railways Transition Team and London’s Elizabeth line.
TOCTalk Live runs
1:00pm – 2:30pm, giving registered attendees ample opportunity to visit the exhibition and Conference presentations too!
DBT is the department for economic growth, supporting businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. It advises, supports and promotes British businesses wanting to grow and export by opening up new markets by removing barriers and striking trade deals, securing global investment from businesses and investors and championing free trade, economic security, and resilient supply chains.
Bill is able to connect delegates with the appropriate services and information that is available through DBT. He can also help in developing an Export Plan, guiding companies through the process as he has many years of exporting experience in rail and other highly regulated industries
In addition, Stadler and CAF are exhibiting in the main hall, so representatives on those stands can be approached directly without appointment.
While appointments for the MTB will first be available to RSN exhibitors, delegates may also enquire whether sessions are available with the commercial teams from Motherson Innovations, Clayton Equipment, Keolis Amey Docklands, Unipart Rail, the Department for Business and Trade, WH Davis and Alstom.
A Conference by Rail Partners at RSN 2023
Hosted this year by Rail Partners, a Conference will take place throughout the day on the mezzanine floor above the main exhibition area. Organised in timetabled sessions, exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to take in those presentations that interest them and visit the exhibition stands betweentimes.
Last year Neil Ovenden, head of engineering at Rail Partners, was a speaker at the conference, delivering an overview of what the post COVID-19 pandemic GB mainline rail recovery opportunities and challenges might be for the rolling stock and associated products and services supply chain.
One year later, Rail Partners will be hosting the conference and introducing a number of speakers who will bring delegates up to date on progress being made to attract passengers back onto trains, to develop and grow the rail freight business, and meet the engineering challenges of the next few years.
Sustainability, the green agenda, decarbonisation, the national electrification programme and alternative fuels are sure to feature, so visitors to the show should check out the conference programme that has been widely publicised before the event on the RSN website to choose which sessions to attend.

The Rail Forum is a national industry association for the rail sector, with 360 members nationwide
Rail Forum welcoming the HM Trade Commissioner to Africa at Clayton EquipmentBritain’s railway is largely in a good place right now. The UK, Welsh and Scottish Governments are committing money to improve their networks and to assure their long-term future while their Net Zero targets will guarantee that fleets of new trains will be needed over the next 10-15 years.
Of course, there are always detractors, and the railway has its own problems right now with trade union unrest, but long-term the future looks bright.
Organisationally, the government is adopting the recommendations of the Shapps-Williams Plan for Rail and is setting up Great British Railways (GBR) as an overall guiding mind, bringing track and train closer together and coordinating their activities. The GBR Transition Team (GBRTT) is working hard on the arrangements to make this happen.
Railways a bright future
The location of GBR’s future headquarters – Derby – has been announced after a very public competition. However, this will be exactly that – a headquarters – and much of the day-to-day work will be carried out at a regional level. The locations of those regional offices have not yet been revealed.
The five shortlisted losers in the HQ competition – Birmingham, Crewe, Doncaster, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and York – must be in with a chance, but there will need to be offices in the South and West, so new names will be added to the mix.
Legislation is needed to formalise some of GBR’s activities. For example, moving the ability to sign contracts with train operators away from the Department for Transport and into GBR will need parliamentary time. However, other activities, such as ticketing reform, will not and those elements are already being worked on.
The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) was formed in June 2011. One of the recommendations made by the McNulty rail value for money report was that a leadership body be established to take responsibility for coordinating and leading on cross-industry initiatives. The RDG was established by the major passenger and freight train operator groups and Network Rail to fulfil this role, replacing the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) that was set up after privatisation in 1993.
One recommendation of the WilliamsShapps Plan for Rail was that elements of RDG’s activity should sit within the remit of an arm’s length body. In May 2022, Rail Partners was formed to continue advocacy and policy activities previously undertaken by RDG on behalf of members, in advance of RDG’s transfer to Great British Railways in 2024.
When asked whether, should a Labour government be formed after the next General Election, GBRTT’s work would be wasted, Shadow Transport Minister Tan Dhesi replied that the work would still be needed, just that Labour may want to take things further. The legislation will still be needed as well, so it should have minimal opposition when it finally reaches parliament.
Britain’s Railway is largely in a good place right now with governments committing money ”
Train Operators
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, train operating companies (TOCs) were contracted to supply passenger services by Franchise Agreements, under which they accepted the risk of fares not meeting expenditure and made decisions as to what trains they would buy or lease.
During lockdown, the government paid to keep the trains running. Franchise agreements were replaced with passenger service agreements and the TOCs were essentially paid a flat fee to manage the railway with the government taking on the risk. That model will continue going forward, although the terms of the agreements are being changed.
Even before COVID, the LNER franchise was handed back to the government by the franchisee Virgin Trains East Coast. Two others followed for various reasons and, with the Department for Transport deciding not to renew Transpennine Express’ contract due to poor service, there are now four operators under government control – LNER, Northern, Southeastern and Transpennine Express. These are all run by DfT OLR Holdings Limited (DOHL), a public corporation of the Department for Transport with Robin Gisby as chief executive officer.
DOHL’s primary purpose is to take active ownership of train operators that transfer from the private to public sector, such that they are managed well ahead of a return to the private sector. It takes full managerial accountability for the train company immediately after its legal transition. As such it oversees the TOC executive team, senior appointments, succession planning, business plans, budget and investment plans, financial, safety and operational performance and stakeholder, passenger and reputational issues.
TOC operations are otherwise not affected. Indeed, DOHL’s vision for its train operators is that they will be industry-leading in terms of safety, financial, operational and commercial performance and customer service, with an enhanced reputation compared with when they arrived in the group.
Seeming like the distant past, essential travel only during lockdown saw many empty trains running, but passenger numbers are now strongly increasing
Passenger Numbers are Recovering
Although moves to attract passengers back to the railway after the COVID-19 pandemic have been affected by strike action and driver overtime bans, which have caused operators to cancel services, passenger numbers are recovering.
Government figures show that, on the week ending Sunday 30 April 2023, passenger journeys were 98% of those observed in the equivalent week in 2019. Over the month, figures varied between 88% and 99% of the figures in 2019 (pre-COVID.
High Speed 2 Progress
Despite all the argument and discussion on the exact final route that HS2 will take, construction is well underway between London and Birmingham. Tunnel boring is taking place, with the Long Itchington Wood tunnel in Warwickshire already complete.
Viaducts are being built over the Colne Valley, on the outskirts of London, and on the approach to Birmingham Curzon Street station, which is itself currently a huge building site
HS2 has contracted with a dozen major contractors, most of them joint ventures, to carry out the work. They in turn are working with hundreds of smaller and second tier suppliers. In total, there are now nearly 30,000 jobs supported by the programme and 2,760 businesses have delivered work on HS2 so far. 96% of contracts are going to UK-based businesses; 61% with SMEs and over 1,970 direct SME contracts. Work on HS2 is well underway at over 350 active sites and delivering phase 1 from London to Birmingham is anticipated to cost £3545 billion.
Revenue, however, is lagging behind as business travellers cut back on days in the office. Season ticket sales are also down. While leisure travel is up, these travellers often purchase discounted or ‘advance’ tickets. As a result, revenue is now back to 85-90% of pre-COVID levels.
Trains for HS2 will be built by a consortium of Hitachi Rail (Newton Aycliffe) and Alstom (Derby).
Preparatory operational planning is being undertaken by the West Coast Partnership, a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia.
“ Trains for HS2 will be built by a consortium of Hitachi Rail (Newton Aycliffe) and Alstom (Derby) ”
To encourage new and smaller suppliers, HS2 has launched an initiative to encourage more UKbased companies to help build its fleet of new high speed trains. It is encouraging suppliers of “storage solutions for motor homes, windows for aeroplanes or internal panels for office buildings” to look at transferring those skills intro making components for high-speed trains. A ‘Meet the Contractor’ event in Manchester on 11 July 2023 will match up such suppliers with Hitachi/Alstom procurement teams to discuss their bespoke requirements and understand more about the upcoming procurement process.
CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) has a factory in Newport, South Wales. There it has constructed trains for Northern (Class 331), ScotRail (Class 195), West Midlands Trains (Class 196) and Transport for Wales (Class 197).
There are three train factories operating in the UK at present, with a fourth one on its way. These offer great opportunities for UK-based suppliers as all are under pressure to maintain/ enhance local content.
Alstom completed its purchase of Bombardier Transportation and its assembly plant in Derby in January 2021. Train manufacture continues, with recent successes being Aventra trains for the Elizabeth line (Class 345), London Overground (Class 710), South Western Railway (Class 701), West Midland Trains (Class 730), Greater Anglia and C2C (both Class 720).
Hitachi Rail is building AT300 trains at Newton Aycliffe in Country Durham. Some of the derivatives are electric only, although with a single diesel on board for last mile movements into depots and around obstructions. Others are diesel-electric bi-modes, with sufficient diesel power to propel the train at speeds approaching that of the electric version. Current operators are LNER and GWR (Class 800 bi-mode), GWR (Class 801 allelectric), GWR, Transpennine Express and Hull Trains (Class 802 bi-mode), Lumo (Class 803 all-electric) and East Midlands Railway (Class 810 bi-mode).
Siemens Mobility is currently building a factory at Goole in East Yorkshire. Here it will build trains for Transport for London’s Piccadilly line, to be followed by (the company hopes) trains for the Central, Bakerloo and Waterloo & City lines.
Network Rail in England and Wales
Network Rail’s Control Period 7 (CP7) will run from 1 April 2024 until 31 March 2029. Planned total expenditure in CP7 for operations, maintenance, support and renewals is £37.5 billion, which is 2.5% higher than projected CP6 expenditure (2019-2024). Once industry costs and rates, and the costs of digital-signalling enablers (principally cab fitment) are included, total expenditure is planned to be £40.0 billion, which is 4.9% higher than CP6.
Of that, £18.81 billion is planned for operations, maintenance and support and £18.22 billion for renewals (core asset renewals and other capital expenditure).
These figures do not include Scotland. Scotland’s Railway has shared an interim strategic business plan (SBP) with rail regulator the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and Transport Scotland. They are currently undertaking further work to align the plan to Scottish Ministers’ HLOS (High Level Output Statement) and SoFA (Statement of Funds Available) with the aim of publishing the final Scotland CP7 SBP in Summer 2023.
Much of Network Rail’s procurement will be carried out on a regional basis. The four regions that cover England and Wales each have their own strategic plans, available on the Network Rail website. The highlevel funding plans of each region for operational expenditure including maintenance (OPEX) and capital expenditure including renewals (CAPEX) are shown below. Much of this will be procured through framework agreements with major contractors, who will then place contracts with specialist firms for particular services, including design, plant hire, geotechnical, labour supply etc.

East West Rail
A railway that will connect Oxford and Cambridge is being constructed in stages. The section between Oxford and Bicester opened in 2016. Construction of the section between Bicester and Bletchley – the old Varsity line – is being carried out by the East West Rail Alliance (Network Rail/Atkins/Laing O’Rourke/VolkerRail). Upgrades to Bletchley station are underway, and a brand-new station will be built for communities at Winslow. This stage is expected to cost £760 million and be complete by 2025.
Once trains are running to Milton Keynes, the next stage will be the connection to Bedford, with Bedford station being completely remodelled. Finally, a new railway will be built from Bedford to Cambridge. East West Rail recently announced its preferred route for this final stage. The total cost of the Oxford to Cambridge project is estimated to be about £5 billion.
Currently, the line is not being electrified. Diesel-powered trains will be leased to run trains between Oxford and Milton Keynes in 2025 and will be operated by Chiltern Railway.
Transpennine Route Upgrade
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a major, multi-billion-pound programme of railway improvements which will improve the 76 miles of railway for passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York. Current estimates are of a total cost approaching £10 billion.
The aim is to reduce journey times to 42 minutes between Manchester and Leeds and 65 minutes between Manchester and York. In addition, there will be capacity for 15 more freight trains to cross the Pennines each day.
The railway and its 23 stations are being improved and electrified by two alliances. TRU East Alliance is made up of Network Rail, J Murphy & Sons, VolkerRail, Siemens and Systra, while the TRU West Alliance comprises Network Rail, BAM Nuttall, Arup,Amey and Siemens.
Smaller Suppliers
The railway seems to have finally woken up to the fact that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a breeding ground for innovation. Rather than seeing them as small suppliers of ‘widgets’, infrastructure owners and rolling stock manufacturers and maintainers have discovered that working with them brings benefits both in terms of efficiency and cost improvements. The major rail industry trade associations are promoting the services of their SME members, and actively recruiting more to join them.
Network Rail launched an action plan to work more efficiently and closely with SMEs in 2020, stating: “We recognise the importance of SMEs to Britain’s economy and local communities – they provide about 16 million jobs nationwide. The action plan aims to create a more mutually beneficial partnership, with Network Rail benefitting from the business community’s adaptability and innovation.”
UNIFE – the European Rail Industry Union – declared: “Small and Medium Enterprises are important stakeholders that allow for the uninterrupted provision of the components and systems that permit the flow of essential personnel, goods and equipment to where they are needed most.”
Mehdi Hocine of the European Commission added: “SMEs are at the core of the rail supply industry. They provide innovation, expertise, agility and highly qualified workforce.”
In January 2023, DfT Minister Jesse Norman stated: “SMEs constitute 99% of all companies operating in the United Kingdom (UK). They are widely recognised as essential to the creation of sustained economic growth, greater productivity and innovation, as well as the continuing vitality of communities across the UK.
“The department is working to ensure that SMEs have better visibility of potential opportunities through the publication of its commercial pipelines and those of its arm’s length bodies, as well as the inclusion of all opportunities above a set amount in the find a tender portal. It is also committed to enhancing its engagement with small businesses and ensuring that larger suppliers treat SMEs fairly, including through prompt payment of undisputed invoices.”
So, although there will doubtless be some bumps along the way, the future looks good for the railway industry and its suppliers, large and small.

Innovators set sights on revolutionising train cleaning operations worldwide with showcase at RSN 2023
After incredible market feedback in its groundbreaking train cleaning concept, Orange Train Wash (OTW) is set to take the train washing world by storm – starting with a presentation of its first ever demonstration unit outside the Derby Arena during RSN 2023.
OTW revolutionises how train exteriors are maintained with trailblazing cleanliness standards and radical environmental, carbon reduction, installation, productivity and cost saving benefits.
Now, empowered by Dura Composites as its manufacturing partner, and signing an innovative commercial partnership with the Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) to showcase the modular system, OTW is on a mission to provide the industry with a more sustainable and cost-effective way of cleaning trains –with significant interest already from across the world, from the USA to Australia.
PHENOMENAL SUSTAINABILITY AND COST SAVING BENEFITS
OTW’s chemical-free solution uses 85º deionised water and powerful air blades and brushes, which push the water back down into the Envirosump water catchment system, ready to be pumped back into each machine for recycling. The filters clean the water at 15 litres per minute back into the larger clean water tank ready for the next clean, with no drainage required.
Its 60 water jets allow for an eight-car train to be cleaned within less than four minutes, and with a minimal footprint either side of the train, it provides huge savings on the civil engineering costs required for other cleaning solutions. The modular system can be moved where it is needed, rather than shunting trains within the depot and cleans trains at a speed of three miles per hour.
The Orange Train Wash maintains water temperature at 20º before heating it back to 85º for the next approaching train. This means that unlike conventional train washes, winter conditions won’t disrupt train washing programmes. Featuring easy to use reporting software, the system also provides accurate reports of carbon and water savings.
Testing discovered that 38% of dirt from traditional cleaning solutions was detergent that had not been removed. This is completely eradicated by OTW’s chemical-free operations. Traditional solutions also use cold water which increases the need for legionella testing. OTW’s risk of legionella is at zero as it heats the water beyond the 60 degrees required to kill the bacteria.
Martin Whitbread, OTW founder, says: “This is a very proud moment for all of us and marks our most significant milestone so far. The ability to see the world’s first Orange Train Wash underscores that this is not just a concept, but a real world solution that will transform exterior train cleaning as we know it.
“A system like this proves that sustainability doesn’t always have to come at a cost. By doing things in a more efficient way operators and asset managers can also realise cost saving and operational benefits. OTW allows for the system to be deployed as either a temporary or permanent solution, which is particularly useful as depots continue to scale.
Over the last three years OTW has seen a significant level of worldwide interest and the opportunity to see our demonstrator at RSN 2023 shows that we are ready to make a difference to how train operating companies and rolling stock providers clean their trains.”
Thanks to its modular nature, the Orange Train Wash can be installed in as little as three days from beginning to end.
GAINING MOMENTUM
The presentation of OTW at RSN 2023 will reinforce to the industry how the system works and the benefits it will bring when implemented. The partnership with GCRE will enable OTW to showcase the system in a live environment in South Wales. The GCRE site will become the international showcase site for Orange Train Wash, providing clients with a handson opportunity to see the innovative system in action. The deal has developed a commercial model where both OTW and GCRE benefit from sales of the cutting-edge technology.
Chair of OTW, Stephen Collicott, said: “To have the Global Centre of Rail Excellence as our international showcase site is a significant step in demonstrating our capabilities and the difference Orange Train Wash will make.
The interest in Orange Train Wash already spans the globe and, to work collaboratively with an innovative world class facility will bring to life the environmental, practical and financial benefits to organisations in an applied environment.”
SUPPORTING MAINTENANCE TEAMS TO DEMONSTRATE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
The intelligence provided by the OTW system allows maintenance teams to demonstrate their carbon footprint from using the machines, thanks to digital reporting systems which feed directly to desktops. OTW provides data on the environmental benefits to feed into reporting where required, such as the amount of water used, recycled and lost.
Martin said: “We recognise that companies need to be able to tangibly demonstrate where they are achieving carbon savings and be able to get that information seamlessly. Our system provides this routinely – giving recycling and carbon footprint
reporting at the click of a button to support organisations with their wider objectives.
“A solution like this is essentially a no-brainer compared to the traditional cleaning solutions currently available. Speaking to companies at shows like RSN have enabled the rail industry to understand the benefits, and the excitement building around OTW has been remarkable.”
The momentum we have gathered has been brilliant and we are excited to revolutionise the industry on a global scale. Empowered by Dura Composites as our manufacturing partner, we are bringing Orange Train Wash from concept to reality for rail operators who are ready to Embrace the Future of Train Washing.”
A solution like this is essentially a no-brainer compared to traditional cleaning solutions currently available.

Greenbank diversifies to deliver for rail supply chain Stand: L8
Recent orders have helped a Midlands-based engineering company to further strengthen its presence within the rail sector supply chain. From its manufacturing facilities in Derbyshire, the Greenbank Group is supplying a host of key components to both operators and suppliers in the UK, Europe and the United States.
Recent contracts have included the manufacture of platforms, engine shrouds, cab assemblies and fuel tanks for prototype rail grinders being produced by a specialist rail vehicle manufacturing firm based in the UK and USA.
A further boost for the company has been contracts worth over £250,000 for the manufacture and installation of control effluent tanks for mainline rollingstock in the UK.
Charles Conroy, Greenbank Group Managing Director, explained: “These latest contracts build on extensive work we have carried out on toilet systems installed on both mainline and heritage rail carriages, in total worth around £2 million. These projects included the provision of new compressor units for a rail tour operator’s Mark I and Mark II coaches and stainless steel water tank fabrications to fit to Class 170 diesel multiple units.”
Much of the work was carried out at Greenbank’s Alfreton Road site in Derby, a facility long associated with the rail sector, that was taken over by the specialist engineering firm in 2021. Building on the success of previous work with long-term partner Datum, including the manufacture of cab assemblies, the Greenbank Group has continued to diversify and strengthen its offering to the rail supply chain since stepping in to save part of the former Garrandale factory.
Over the past couple of years, the 1,800 sq m facility has also enabled Greenbank to fulfil orders for a gangway fitment test machine for a client in India and bespoke fixturing to enable the accurate assembly of a next-generation people mover designed for a client in Pittsburgh, USA. Other recent commissions included modifications to a client’s 23m assembly jig to ensure it meets current Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).
