Climbing in the Peaks
Despite the activities of the previous night, a dilapidated van pregnant with seventeen eager climbers (some still nursing hangovers) trundled off with James our trusty steed at the helm. After a relatively smooth exit from London (not men-
excellent meal, pints of Stones and sticky toffee pudding in front of a roaring open fire. The next day, revitalised by the full breakfast from the rather dubious

2f11§§ tioning the incident with the wing mirror and having no speedometer or second gear - nice one by the Union there ) we arrived just in time to catch last orders at the Fox House. After a relaxing pint or Iwo we collapsed into our luxury executive tents. With an unnervingly early start we sauntered up to Stanage Edge - pride of the Peak District and a Mecca for British climbers. A day of chuffing good climbing followed, only hampered by the force 10 gales. Worthy of note were several first leads by club members Simon on Flying Buttress (difficult) and Ralf and Stephan on Holly Bush Crack (Very difficult). Other impressive achievements included Ian, Alan and Richard on Hargreaves Original (VS 4c), Graham on Central Trinity (VS 4c) and Dave on Christmas Crack (HS 4b). At dusk we retired to the pub (oh, go on surprise us some more I hear you cry...) for an
Grindleford Caff the more hardy of us (ie not the wet fish who went to the Foundry climbing wall) proceeded to Froggat edge. Strong winds made climbing even more "interesting" than usual but we still managed some excellent routes the highlight of which was Dave not fitting up the chimney on Jankers Crack. The final climbs finished in the dimming twilight and we restocked the van for the journey home. Everyone pronounced themselves satisfied and no one had lost more than a pound of flesh so it was a pretty successful weekend on all counts. To anyone who wishes to sample the delights of climbing we have trips every other weekend and go to a London climbing wall on Wednesday afternoons. Details on the notice board by the College climbing wall. On the social side we meet in Southside lounge on Thursday evenings from 7pm onwards.
