Cataract surgery is not always the option you want to choose to stop cataract growth. Some clinic studies done in Europe have shown that an antioxidant program can stop or lessen cataract growth. Cataract Surgery: Cataract, loss of transparency of the eye lens, is the leading cause of blindness in the aging. Cataract can be caused by conditions such as eye infections, excess exposure to x-rays, excess exposure to ultraviolet light of the sun, trauma to the eye, and electric shock. Cataracts can also be caused by exposure to certain chemicals – insecticides, heavy metals, leukemia drugs, corticosteroids, and many other chemicals. And still, other causes are poor nutrition, heredity, high blood pressure, smoking, kidney disease, diabetes. As you age, the level of oxygen and protective nutrients in the eye decrease making you more susceptible to cataract. Also, the liquid in the lens stops changing shape, which allows you to see close and far despite the forces that exist to change it. As these forces continue trying to shape the lens and they place stresses on the lens causing free radicals. Finally, there is an increase in free radicals in the eye due to years of exposure to certain UV light frequencies, chemicals, and lifetime use; and at the same time, there is a decrease in the protective antioxidants the neutralize the increase free radicals. It is thought that the only way to deal with cataracts is surgery. Now, this is not the case. However, if you prefer to have cataract surgery, then this is a choice you and your doctor can make. It is known that around 5% of the people that have cataract surgery have some type of complications. However, this type of surgery is considered quite safe.

An Alternative to Cataract Surgery In the early stages of cataracts or even way before the age where you are at high risk for cataracts, you can start a nutritional program that will avert, delay, or even prevent the occurrence of cataracts. The basis of the nutritional program is neutralizing the free radicals, which are caused by the various conditions mentioned in the first paragraph of this article. So to avoid cataract surgery, there are certain nutrients that you need to take to neutralize the free radicals that cause cataracts in your eyes. These are the main nutrients to take: Glutathione Lipoic acid Vitamin C Vitamin E B-Vitamins Quercetin, hesperidin Lutein Zeaxanthin Zinc Selenium If you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and take antioxidant supplements every day you can prevent developing cataracts. In some cases where cataracts have progressed to a certain point, surgery may be your only option. So, to avoid worrying or dealing with cataract, start maintaining a diet which is high antioxidants.
