ADDING CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION SERVICE TO YOUR HTM PROGRAM FROM THE LENS OF DALE COVER, RSTI PRESIDENT The average purchase price of a cath lab is around $800k for your basic unit and about $1.5M, well equipped, in car dealer lingo. With a service contract cost of between 10 and 12% of the original purchase price, your annual maintenance contract costs could range from around $80k to $180k depending on your system configuration and leverage with Philips. Adding options like extended coverage (after-hours) will drive that cost even higher.
N
ow that you have mastered the imaging systems that would be considered the low hanging fruit, such as the Mobile X-Ray, C-Arms and general Radiographic systems, a good way to continue your growth is to add the Cardiac Catheterization Labs to your program. If you have a program that has already dropped all contracts and you are maintaining your Cath labs under a T&M (time and materials) agreement, most of your risk and expense can be reduced by bringing that service in-house. If you happen to be an ISO, regardless of your size, adding Cardiac Cath to your available services will offer the potential for new revenue streams and growth. Here is some information to help with justifying a plan to drop or severely modify your existing service contract(s) on Philips Allura FD Family cath labs:

The average life span of the X-Ray tube and the detector (the two most expensive replacement parts) is roughly 5 years each. Clearly there are exceptions that can be pointed out, like the tube that lasts 8 years or the detector that fails in the first year. The OEM labor charges are about $500/hr, $750/ hr after 5:00pm and $1000/hr for weekends and holidays. The price of a new tube from the manufacturer is about $181k and on average a used tube costs around $30k to $100k depending on age. The price of a new detector is roughly $195k, and the average used detector cost ranges from $40k to $150K, again depending on its age. Training at RSTI is $12999.00 and requires two weeks travel to Solon, Ohio.

These numbers reflect worst case wherein the two most expensive components fail, which is highly unlikely. That being said, should worst case happen, the only point at which you would lose is in a three year deal where you bought only OEM new parts. All of the other comparisons show exceptional potential for savings. Clearly these scenarios only account for the big ticket items and certainly there could be other expenses incurred during these time windows due to other normal maintenance occurrences. I have written many articles that extol the virtues and savings of servicing your own equipment. This time I thought I would include some real numbers to help you write your justification to attend training and get away from that contract.

DAVE’S RAVE TECH TIP: NEW CIRCUIT BOARDS FOR OEC C-ARMS BY DAVE DOMANSKI RSTI Instructor Hey, gang, Dave here at RSTI with some news on updated circuit boards that you are likely to see in the OEC 9800 and 9900 C-arms. The three boards we will be covering today are the Generator Driver PCB, the IGBT Snubber PCB and the Battery Charger PCB. The new boards were made necessary due to some components becoming obsolete. It’s difficult to make new boards when they stop making the parts you used before! Therefore any replacements ordered from the manufacturer will be the updated PCBs. The new Generator Driver PCB and IGBT Snubber PCB are easy to distinguish from the old version primarily because the board itself is now blue in color as opposed to the traditional green. They are both direct replacements so you will still use the same connectors (no changes to the wiring harness). The test points used for dead-time adjustment still have the same designations ,and are in the same order, TP70, TP66, TP67 and TP68; however the minimum allowable dead-time has dropped to an impressive 1uS from the previous 1.5uS. The test points are also now in a single row near the center of the board, just above the large heat sink. The battery charger is a bit different in several ways. It looks similar to the old version, though the inductor (largest component on the board) is now closer to the top edge. There are now three green LEDs along the bottom edge of the board that indicate the mode of the battery charger:
One LED = Low Charge Mode Two LEDs = Normal Charge Mode Three LEDs = Charge Boost Mode
6 // FOCALSPOT.ISSUE3.15
The amber current display is near its old location, but the current values have changed by a factor of 10X. Whereas a reading of 25 would be equal to 25 mA on the old charger board, it is equal to 250 mA on the new one. The red voltage display is still with us as well, ranging from 160V to 250V, with the big difference from the old board being that now all of the voltage LEDs up to and including the charge voltage will be lit. Calibration of the display remains the same in methodology, though the adjustment pots have changed. Pot R144 is now the voltage adjustment and pot 147 is the display adjustment. Be aware that the new charger board has a different wiring harness. This means that an old version board will require the old wiring harness in order to replace the new version board.

RSTI EXCHANGE RECIPE FOR GROWTH NEWS FROM RSTI-EXCHANGE.COM BY TERRY SPETH VICE PRESIDENT, RSTI EXCHANGE In the RSTI Exchange world we’re continuing to grow. I would like to compare us to a delicious pot roast cooked in a crock pot: planned ahead, knowing the right timing, cooked slowly and steadily with the perfect ingredients, while seasoned just right. PLANNING: RSTI Exchange continues to execute our plans for growing the business while keeping all of the same important qualities in focus: quality tested used parts, knowledgeable service engineers, competitive pricing, and great customer service. Recently we added a new salesperson, Jason Whitfield. We believe he will be a great addition to RSTI Exchange. Jason has been in the industry for 7 years. He has the kind of experience and attitude required to be an valuable asset to you. All RSTI employees wear multiple hats. No one here does just one job at RSTI. We all contribute in different aspects of the company, and Jason has what it takes jump right in and contribute to the already incredible Exchange team. TIMING: The timing is perfect. With increased demand for good quality used parts and on-demand service RSTI Exchange fits into the recipe. Dustin Zimmerman, our service support lead, is a jack-of-all trades with many resources, plus he has direct access to RSTI’s highly-skilled instructor staff for further consultation. If you are stumped, and your equipment is “down” we have the perfect guy for the job. We can visit your site (on demand) and assist in getting your site back up and running. Our students need a great source for parts so we built RSTI Exchange to supply their needs. RSTI Exchange is now well positioned to support all of your parts needs. Our parts inventory is rapidly growing across all modalities and manufacturers and we have the expertise to identify the exact part you need. The timing couldn’t be better for us to supply that demand. SLOW: We don’t want to expand too fast. We believe growth should be slow and steady. A slow growth rate ensures we keep our high standards of quality. Quality 10 | FOCALSPOT.ISSUE02.15 10 // FOCALSPOT.ISSUE3.15
parts and knowledgeable, on-demand service are essential. PERFECT INGREDIENTS: Darrel Kile, Ken Brady, Jason Whitfield, Dustin Zimmerman and our warehouse employees behind the scenes have over 85 years combined experience. Myself – I can’t pinpoint exactly when I started because I have been around RSTI most of my adult life. How can you quantify, or put a value on being mentored by the best there was: Terry Speth Sr.? His knowledge of service training, support and management plus the knack for running a business was invaluable. SEASON IT JUST RIGHT: The rest of the staff at RSTI seasons the meat perfectly. Our diverse personalities and the enthusiasm we bring into work every day makes a big difference in all of our attitudes. You will feel the passion in our voice, and see it in our actions. You’ll be sure when you meet with our staff they will care about your parts or service requests, and future success. Delicious pot roast… maybe slow cooked pulled pork was a better analogy, but you get the point.

GAME CHANGERS THIS ISN’T YOUR FATHER’S AMX BY MIKE PETELIN // RSTI INSTRUCTOR The AMX4 and AMX4+ are on their way out. They are being replaced with the Optima series of portables. The GE Optima series introduces new technologies as well as new challenges for the service engineer. There is very little in common between the Optima and AMX series. The AMX used 9 individual batteries, while the Optima uses four battery packs, each with three batteries. The new battery connectors used are much safer than just a threaded stud with nut; thus lowering the chance of “welding” your screwdrivers to the system. Because there are no boards that were used in the AMX4 that are used in the Optima series there is no reason to hold on to your AMX for spare parts. The main failure item on the AMX is the Controller (or CPU) board. Not much has changed with the Optima as the computer or “DI” is one of the high failure items on the Optima. The digitizer for the touch screen can pose some issues as well.
Be sure to check the accompanying schedule to claim your spot in our next Optima classe, held on December 14-18, where you will learn how to calibrate, maintain and repair the Optima series of portables.
