President’s Letter: “Sky’s the Limit” As you many know, RSTI has been spending a lot of time in Charlotte, N.C. working with an outstanding group of educators at ECPI University. This year begins the fourth consecutive year that we have taught basic radiology courses, as an elective for their underclassmen.

Generally these are 25 to 40 year olds who want to enter our field, or in some cases, exit their prior jobs for a better future. Each class is 5 weeks and students train at RSTI for 10 or 15 weeks. Students generally attend RSTI after all of the electronics prerequisites are met. It took us some time to fine-tune this curriculum in concert with ECPI, but the real payoff for everyone is now just unfolding, which is a diagnostic imaging degree at an accredited institution.

ECPI University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and ECPI shares our educational viewpoint for the medical industry. Initially this is a 2-year degree program, and will be taught by a combination of mostly ECPI staff and some RSTI staff.

Beginning in the fall quarter you can transfer credits with their approval and/or enroll in this program.

Currently it is the only place that I am aware of where you can get the best of typical didactic classroom training, coupled daily with hands on training in a real lab environment with Rad Rooms, R/F Rooms, Portables, Mammography Systems and CT. The next steps are to provide our industry with a 4-year Bachelor of Science Degree in Diagnostic Imaging, combining the elements of the 2-year program with advanced imaging training and specific modality training. Two of our instructors are beginning their work on their master’s degree program to meet the educational requirements to teach at this educational level.

It was always our founder’s dream to make this type of educational contribution to the imaging industry he loved. Terry and I tried several times with different organizations, but never found the right strategic fit for his vision. It appears that RSTI has now found the fit, even though we are taking these last steps after his

tragic passing in 2008. Terry would have been proud not only of his life-long goal, but more importantly, the quality of the education that will now be provided by this joint venture. I can still hear him repeating, ad nauseam to everyone here, that we stand for three (3) things at RSTI:

When you think about it, it is only logical that after 26 years RSTI would take these next steps in the academic world. We have consistently plowed through new modalities and new technology making significant investments to stay current, all the while providing the industry with usable, leading-edge, hands-on, personal training.

Last, but certainly not least, I want invite all of you to participate in an important RSTI event this Fall. On October 22, 2011, there will be a memorial dinner/dance here in Solon, Ohio. Everyone will be coming to honor Terry, Sr. for one last time, bringing their recollections of his stories, his jokes and his zest for life.

Tickets at the door will be inexpensive and all proceeds will go to the Terrence M. Speth Scholarship Foundation. Whether or not you can attend please make a donation to his amazing foundation. In 2012 these funds will be used to grant scholarships to individuals who want to enter the imaging field, and in typical Terry fashion here are some of the requirements to be considered: Electronics background from school, the military or working on electrical equipment i.e., TV’s and computers.

Not afraid to get your hands dirty.

Strong work ethic and desire to get ahead.

A “C” average or modestly better in school, because “they” expect to work hard.

Some appreciation of vintage automobiles or at least know what TDC means.

How Not to Get Hired

In today’s job market, it is critical that you stand out in your job search.

Unfortunately, too many job seekers stand out for all the wrong reasons. Throughout my nine years of recruiting for Stephens International Recruiting, Inc., I have encountered a wide range of situations when placing technicians and managers. I am frequently asked what it takes to land a new position, and the answer is a combination of experience, education, timing, personality, and luck. It is also critical to make several positive “first impressions.” Many quality job applicants are ruled out by the simplest of mistakes without even being aware of it. The bottom line is: you cannot land a job in ten seconds, but you can certainly be ruled out in five.

Writing a resume is the beginning of anyone’s job search no matter what field you are in. Typically the chronological (most recent employer first) resume is standard for technical and managerial positions. This would be the first impression that employers have of applicants. Hiring authorities are bombarded with resumes and do not spend a lot of time reading each of them. It is imperative that your resume communicates that you are qualified and competent. You can find several articles that provide resume writing tips on line, or have a professional write one for you. There are also templates available with most word processing software. A maximum of two pages for most resumes, anything longer might get lost in the shuffle. I also suggest emailing your resume not faxing. It is much easier to keep track of a resume on a computer versus a filing system.

The most common mistake I encounter on resumes is misspelled words or typographical errors. We all make mistakes; however, when sending out resumes, a simple error in spelling can cost you. I suggest having someone you trust read over the resume to look for spelling or grammatical errors. Using the “spell checker” is helpful, but it will not find a misused word if it is spelled correctly (i.e., their versus there; in versus 4 | FOCALSPOT.SUMMER.2011

an). A fresh set of eyes can go a long way.

Believe it or not, another common mistake is not including complete contact information on the resume.

If the resume is sent by e-mail, the hiring authority can easily reply to find out the contact information.

But what does that say about the applicant? It could have been a simple mistake, or will it appear that the candidate is just not organized? It is not uncommon for people to keep old resumes on file and update them over time. If you have moved or had your telephone number or e-mail address changed, make sure it is up to date. You might also want to change your e-mail address if you have an “unprofessional” e-mail address. If I were to give you some examples of unprofessional and often “inappropriate” e-mail addresses I see from time to time, this article might not get published.

If the resume is written well and the qualifications are a match, the next “first impression” will be a telephone interview. It is a good idea to make sure your voicemail message reflects professionalism on both cell and home phones. If you have a funny message or a rap song set up on voicemail, it would be in your best interest to change it. Additionally, respond to any messages as soon as possible. I have dealt with unemployed candidates who take a week to reply to my email and messages. It makes me question their motivation and sincerity. If you are serious about looking for work, it should not take longer than a day or two to respond.

When you do speak with potential employers, always remain positive and never bad mouth former employers. Biomed is a very small industry and the person you speak negatively about might be a part of the hiring decision. It is also important to be energetic and upbeat. If you do not make a positive impression at this point, you will not make it to the face-to-face interview.

Social Networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are a great way keep up with old friends and network. They can also be used by savvy Human Resources Departments to find out more about potential new hires. If you have an account with sites

like these, consider keeping them private. Or better yet, do not put anything out there you wouldn’t want your mother to see.

The most critical part of the hiring process is the face-to-face interview.

Always be on time and dress professionally. I suggest wearing a suit and tie for men or a blouse and slacks or appropriate attire for women. If you show up to the interview and are over dressed, you can always take a jacket off. If you show up under dressed, there is no turning back. I learned my lesson the hard way early in my career. I set up an interview for a candidate with fifteen years of experience and assumed he knew how to dress for an interview. He showed up in jeans and a tee shirt. He was qualified and the client liked him.

However, the client could not get past his dress that day and it cost him the job.

Also be aware of your body language and make eye contact with everyone. If you cross your arms after being introduced to someone of the opposite sex, it could be construed as you are not open to working with

the opposite sex. People set aside time during their busy schedule to focus their attention on you. Do not bring your cell phone or Bluetooth into the interview.

And certainly do not take any calls during the interview (yes this actually happened). Most often, people believe the hiring decision is made in the interview room. You must remember everyone is in on the hiring decision. Candidates have lost job opportunities by being rude to the receptionist.

Many companies will complete a criminal background and reference checks before hiring. It is best to be honest when disclosing any issues that might turn up. Candidates take for granted that their references are going to give them a positive review, which is not always the case. Always ask your references for permission to be used as a reference and ask them if they will give a positive review of your performance. I have called references provided by candidates and the feedback is not always flattering.

Competition for jobs is at an all time high and you must standout in every category. The hiring process will go much smoother if common sense and thoughtfulness is applied. It is a challenge for anyone to find a new position today, so do not overlook the simple things.

Service Professional Memorial Scholarship

Purpose:

The Terry M. Speth Service Professional Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 by the family and friends of Terry Speth, a committed diagnostic imaging professional, entrepreneur, and educator in the field of diagnostic imaging.

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a career in servicing diagnostic imaging. Ideal applicants are those enrolled in a biomedical or electronic engineering school or course of study, or who have biomedical or electronic engineering work experience and are committed to pursuing a career in diagnostic imaging.

Selection criteria and process: Applicants must have at least a 2.5 grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). A selection committee appointed by the Cleveland Foundation will base selections on the completed application, ability to benefit , motivation, academic merit, and financial need.

Preference will be given to applicants who are members of a biomedical or medical society and those who demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility:

Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident with permanent resident card Must be attending an accredited educational institution Must be enrolled in a biomedical or electronic engineering school or have biomedical or electronic engineering work experience Must be pursuing coursework related to the pursuit of a career in diagnostic imaging Must have, at a minimum, a 2.5 grade-point average (GPA)

Award process: The annual award amount and number of awards will be based on the earnings of the fund. The maximum award amount is $1,000. Awards must be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for coursework. Grants are paid to the educational institution for the benefit of the selected student(s).

Instructor’s Corner Our “Braintrust” Grows We at RSTI have been fortunate to see continued growth over the last number of years. We have you, our customers, to thank for that. With over 35 courses currently offered here, it was about time to add to the staff. So add we did!

Last month, RSTI invited Matt Mondello to join the RSTI family. Matt, like many RSTI employees, has served our country in the US Marines. He has over eight years experience in electronics, a couple of which were as an instructor for the Marine Corps. In addition, as an international service representative for Fedex, he was responsible for clearance of freight moving into Canada.

Matt has a passion for community involvement as well. He enjoys participating in fundraising, charity

events, and leading community cleanup days. He is also an avid CrossFitter and outdoorsman.

We are looking forward to Matt’s contribution here at RSTI. His strong mechanical abilities, organizational skills and electronics background are sure to enhance RSTI’s capabilities. So the next time you are at RSTI say hi to Matt and introduce yourself. After all, you’re part of the RSTI family, too!

Remote Access Connect with your modalities via the Cloud

Having remote access to your imaging modalities can offer an array of advantages for a service professional.

The fact is that most of today’s imaging systems have a computer. Even if a modality isn’t a digital modality such as CR, or DR, many still have computers with network access. This is necessary for features like DICOM Modality Worklist, DICOM MPPS, or just basic system controls.

Remote access should be defined as having access to information within the system, without being in the room. This could be from a service laptop in the next room or from somewhere else in the world, given the appropriate VPN access.

What advantages would remote access offer?

Access to system logs and error logs – Error logs and “use logs” are typically stored somewhere on the computer with file extensions that may include, among others, .TXT, .LOG., Etc. Use logs can store information like the parameters used for exposures, detent feedback, system reboots, etc.

View and transfer images to the service laptop – When troubleshooting image quality problems where the image appears differently on other systems, it’s often useful to view the image as it’s stored on the modality’s hard drive. This allows us to view the image before it was sent to determine if the recipient is interpreting the image properly. Today’s modalities communicate using the DICOM Standard, in which the images will have a .DCM extension (or no extension at all for DICOM CD’s). You can use FTP to transfer the .DCM files to the service laptop and use a free DICOM viewer like EZDicom or Osirix to view the images.

Access files, such as .PDF manuals stored on the modality’s computer – More and more often, OEM’s are providing their manuals in .PDF format stored within the system. Sometimes it’s nice to transfer 12 | FOCALSPOT.SUMMER.2011

those manuals to the service laptop for ease of use.

An example of this was a viewstation I was recently working on that only provided .PDF manuals through the application. The manual was 500+ pages long and the built-in .PDF reader didn’t have a search/find function. It was much more convenient to FTP transfer the files to my laptop, and then search through the manual on my service laptop. Now I can retain a copy of the manuals for future use.

Test connectivity to remote devices such as PACS, RIS, workstations, etc. - If you can remotely access the modality’s computer, it obviously has some level of functioning connectivity. But you can use tools/ commands like PING and DICOM_ECHO to determine the modality’s level of connectivity with other remote devices like PACS & RIS, should connectivity problems arise.

Access to OEM Service Tools – Many OEMs provide an interface for the service professional to setup, configure, and troubleshoot the system through some kind of Service Tools application (usually a web browser). If this is the case, that means that there is a web server running on that modality that can be accessed from the outside (assuming there’s no firewall blocking access to the HTTP port).

Important definitions: Server – a server provides information to clients.

TCP ports are logical addresses that tell the receiving computer what type of data is incoming.

Remote access falls into three main categories: HTTP – Most of you are probably very familiar with HTTP as the protocol that is used by web servers to provide graphics and text information. HTTP is a poor protocol for transferring data between computers, but is very well suited for displaying information in an “aesthetically pleasing” format to the users. HTTP servers by default use port 80, but the alternate port is 8080. HTTPS is encrypted HTTP and uses port 443. HTTP clients are web browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, etc.

Example 1 - HTTP uses port 80. That means that a web server is listening on port 80 for incoming connections from clients. Any time that a client sends a packet to a server addressed to port 80, the server knows that it’s internet/HTTP data and sends the data to the web server.

Example 2 – FTP uses port 21. When a client connects to an FTP server, it sends data addressed to port 21.

When the server receives data addressed to port 21, it knows that the received data is a file transfer, and it gets handled by the FTP server software.

FTP – File Transfer Protocol is exactly what it sounds like. FTP is a protocol for transferring files. FTP client software is used to connect to FTP servers that are listening on port 21. A common (free) FTP client is Filezilla.

Client – a client uses client software to connect to a server that is providing information on a specific port number. A web browser is HTTP client software, which is used to connect to the HTTP server, listening on port 80. FTP client software is used to connect to FTP servers. Clients cannot connect to other clients; servers cannot connect to other servers. This is why you always hear IT talk about the “client-server” environment.

Telnet – Telnet is a protocol for text communications.

Telnet can be used to run commands, edit files, delete files, etc…Telnet uses port 23 by default.

SSH is a protocol similar to telnet, except SSH uses

A Telnet client is built into most operating systems as an executable command in the command window.

Where do you begin?

Determine IP Address of the modality you’d like to log into.

First, you must find access to a command window on the modality that you want to gain access to. In a Windows environment this would be what most of us would consider the DOS screen. UNIX systems may call it a terminal window, command window, or command prompt. Sometimes you can simply minimize the medical application and open a command window from the desktop environment.

In the command window, type: ipconfig /all <enter> (or ifconfig –a for a UNIX system) to determine the system’s IP address. Next, you need to determine which servers are running on that modality which will allow us to log in remotely.

From a command window, type: netstat “-a” <enter>. Netstat is the command for network statistics, and the “-a” switch displays listening ports. Below is a sample netstat “-a.”

Cover’s Column Summer Certificate Courses Booking Fast

I can hardly believe that we are entering the summer season already. It seems like I was just complaining about winter! Well, no more complaining. It’s time to get the boats ready and in the water.

Speaking of getting ready, the past few Phase I classes have been full to capacity. If you intend to begin the Certificate Series of classes you should get your paper work together and get registered as soon as possible.

Phase I isn’t the only class to see more activity. Be sure to get in touch with Anna to at least get penciled in. Then, as soon as you can, confirm your attendance in the class.

In other news, we have hired a new instructor

to work primarily in the labs. Matt Mondello will be helping with test equipment, lab instruction and maintaining the equipment in the labs to the highest standards possible.

Finally, I would like to take a moment to wish all the best to Manny Roman as he enters retirement. I hope that when my wife and I visit Las Vegas we have an opportunity to get together with him and Ruth.

You may think it odd to recognize a competitor, but the fact is that he is a friend and we worked together before he started his own business. Manny has been a great asset to the Medical Imaging industry. I understand he will still be involved with the industry in some capacity, so I’m sure our paths will cross.
