30 Years OF EXCELLENCE From THE LENS OF DALE COVER, RSTI PRESIDENT CRT monitors ruled the imaging labs and now there are huge multi-screen flat panel monitors that display multiple images from various systems at one time One thing that will not change is the way RSTI constantly adapts to keep up with developments in medical imaging. Our basic training courses have been updated repeatedly to reflect the current state of technology. The most current revisions demote some older technology and theory discussions and add new technology like in-depth digital imaging theory, motion controls for the new automatic positioning systems and system communications testing/verification for the major comm standards such as CAN, RSS and TCP/IP.
RSTI celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, quite an accomplishment for any business. Many things have changed since we opened our doors. Microprocessors control virtually every aspect of modern X-Ray systems, not just the displays CR and DR systems have all but ended the use of film and the chemicals associated with processing Digital Imaging is now commonplace while before it was only used on the highest technology imaging systems Flat panel detectors weren’t even a concept, now they are everywhere
2 // focalspot.Issue2.15
Just as the basic X-Ray courses need updating constantly so do our product specific offerings. When I started with RSTI we were offering advanced courses like GE MPX Maintenance and Servicing the Picker SE600 CT. Today, we continue to add new courses on state-of-the art systems like the Hologic Dimensions 3D Mammography system and the GE Optima 220 Portable Digital X-Ray unit. We are very excited to be able to offer training this summer on the Hologic Dimensions 3D Mammography system. As is typical for all of our digital mammography systems training programs, service professionals will be taught to maintain their systems to the highest standards and will be able to reduce their need to maintain costly OEM service contracts. Soon we will begin developing curriculum for the GE Optima 220 Portable. Course availability is projected for the first quarter of 2016. From our inception, we have been asking ourselves how we can best support the healthcare industry today. Our answer always comes back to the same thing: support the service engineers with cost-effective and timely training so they understand their equipment well enough to significantly reduce their need for OEM service support. On July 22, we will be attending the MD Imaging Show in Indianapolis where RSTI is hosting a welcome reception during which we will celebrate our 30th Anniversary.

HOLOGIC DIMENSIONS New! Hologic Dimensions 3D Tomo System As has come to be expected from any RSTI course, we will prepare the engineer for all service aspects of the Dimensions system. This includes: System overview System operation & functional checks Component ID & location Power distribution Required tool & test equipment System calibrations (detector, tomo, system geometry, generator, etc…) Detector pixel mapping System backup/restore By Todd Boyland RSTI Director of Training RSTI is extremely proud to announce the addition of the Hologic Dimensions 3D Tomo system to our digital mammo service training lineup. As you are likely aware, RSTI has been providing training on the Hologic Selenia digital mammo system for the past 14 years. There is some confusion on the name of Hologic’s newest system as it is called the “Selenia Dimensions mammography system”. The Dimensions system is a complete re-design from the original Selenia and it is a completely different hardware/software platform.
RSTI’s Dimensions training class will cover the newest Selenia Dimensions system, including the 3D Tomo option. 4 // focalspot.Issue2.15

Dave’s rave Phase I - Innovate, Evolve and Adapt By Dave Domanski RSTI Instructor
T
his year marks the 30th anniversary of RSTI and my 10 year anniversary with this fine institution. 10 years anywhere can make a person a bit reflective and it has definitely done so for me. The dedication to providing a top-notch educational experience to our students and the industry has always been and continues to be a top priority here at RSTI and with that dedication comes many changes and new challenges. When I started here as a lab instructor, we only had nine lab bays and all of our imaging systems were analog. One of those systems was an old Picker VTX. Sure, it had a microprocessor in the control console, but its only job was to turn on the correct lamps (LAMPS, not LEDs!) on the display when the mechanical push buttons were pressed on the console. Every calibration involved tweaking potentiometers or moving slide resistors. The high voltage transformer was the size of a large dog house, weighed as much as a small car, and if there was a fault the system wouldn’t give you a fancy error log or code, it simply stopped working. The logic was mostly handled with relays and some of the schematics were literally six feet long. Our classroom lectures were aided by overhead projectors that used transparencies and all of our quizzes and exams were on paper. What a difference a decade makes! Now we have 18 lab bays at our disposal and a steady supply of digital modalities. As I write this I have just finished an OEC 9900 class, a machine with many circuit boards containing numerous microprocessors and two single board computers running different operating systems yet sharing a hard drive. The user interfaces are membrane keypads and a true surface acoustical wave touch screen. There are still some pots to tweak, but now they are used to calibrate the control and feedback circuits that will do the filament calibration under software control. The high voltage transformer is now just a bit bigger than a bread box and can easily be moved by one person. Events and errors are logged and
6 // focalspot.Issue2.15
reported, and the pile of books a manufacturer used to include have all been replaced with a CD. Our classroom lectures are now enriched with Smartboard technology and our testing is done online.
I love it. As the technology changes we receive the gift of opportunity. Opportunity to learn new things, to expand our knowledge base and to carry on the tradition of building the best damn training center this side of the moon.
Happy Anniversary RSTI and Happy Anniversary to me!.

USED EQUIPMENT From RSTI-Exchange.com! BY TERRY SPETH Vice President, RSTI Exchange As we move into the warmer months, RSTI Exchange is heating up as well. If you have not heard yet, RSTI Exchange is selling parts. We are specializing in tubes, detectors and other high value items that have not traditionally been readily available on the used market. As an added value we are offering installation services with these parts as well.
More than just a device. We do a lot more than simply sell pre-owned medical imaging devices. We are a complete partner. We offer installation, de-installation, leasing and finance, and can even train you on your new device.
All of these parts are tested prior to the sale to ensure only the highest quality items are shipped. We are working with a local independent physicist who performs a complete inspection on all detectors as if they were installed in a facility. This ensures that when the part reaches the customer it is in excellent working order.
Most of these parts come with a 90 day prorated warranty, with the option to extend at an additional cost. Because we are taking the time and making a strong effort to ensure these parts are of the highest quality, we are also offering our services to install the parts. This provides the customer with a great option at a better cost than going to the OEM. They will receive a fully tested and working part and have it professionally installed by a trained individual to ensure the lowest amount of down time. All this being said let us know about any equipment you may be retiring from service. With these new services we are constantly looking to acquire new inventory. RSTI exchange is able to do the removal and shipping of these units as well. We can purchase the units outright or we can offer training credits to come to a class here at RSTI. Let us know what you have and we will be happy to show you how this works. We have many of these parts arriving daily so don’t be shy. Give Terry or Darrel a call and find out how RSTI Exchange can help you get back online in no time.

GAME CHANGERS An Instructor’s Take on Industry Changes By Mike Petelin // RSTI Instructor
It has been just over ten years since I became a member of the RSTI team. I started out reworking training manuals, attempting technical drawings, and was known to teach a biopsy system class or two. Much has changed since the “good old days”.
Over the last few years I have seen a push, in the imaging world, to build systems that use embedded computers to minimize the electronic past count as well as the size of an overall system. We once would troubleshoot to the component level and even do field replacements of those components. Newer systems automate most of the calibrations that were once done with potentiometers, including kV, mA, AEC among others. Knowing this, many people believe that having the knowledge of how the “old” systems work doesn’t have a place in today’s service world, especially with the need of pass-keys or dongles to do some of the service. We need to know what the system is trying to accomplish, and how we would accomplish that task if we were able to do it manually. With this “dated” information, we can make educated decisions about how to remedy an issue – such as deciding whether to replace a part or to reprogram an embedded system in the generator.
