Writing something “clever and inspiring” for this playbill seems somehow inappropriate for the occasion. After a year filled with hard rhetoric, frustration, often sadness, and vitriol, I think we may just want to escape…if only for a little while. We can fall in love with everyone in a Maine “almost” town. We can laugh at the denizens of a north Florida trailer park. We can revel in the music of Fats Waller. We can relish a magical musical set in the French countryside. And we can feel, with a young girl, injustices in a small Alabama town. We can tap our toes with the music, shed a tear, or laugh out loud. We can love—again—where we are. We’re at the theatre, where the moments are just moments. There’s no re-wind button, no mute, no channel-changer, no pause button. It is ethereal, unique to just this group of people…here at this performance. It’s never exactly the same from day to day, night to night. This performance will never happen again. Thank you for being a part of the magic of live theatre. It’s okay now to tune out CNN and Fox, shut down Facebook and Instagram, and turn off your phone. Just relax and enjoy this show at Venice Theatre. Welcome back.

So…that happened. Can we just say that 2020 was a bad dream, didn’t exist, or put us into idle gear for a while? I guess not, but we can certainly wish it. Well, Venice Theatre is still here and, actually, stronger than before the pandemic. Thanks to you, we managed to maintain our entire staff (although with some salary reductions for several months). You came through with your treasure at a time Venice Theatre most needed it. We’re here because you did, and because you continue to do, that. Your continued support puts us in excellent shape to ramp up for a full season. With our talented artists already working on all the shows, we expect a dazzling array of quality entertainment throughout 2021-2022. We’re excited about and hopeful that we are going to be on the “other side” of that “bad dream.” Much has been happening while you were away. We’ve remodeled the Jervey Theatre, improving the look, comfort, and accessibility. We’ve remodeled much of the lobby and restrooms with more to come. We’re improving our design and technical facilities, and we’re designing the renovation of our newly-purchased arts & education building. You’re helping to make it happen. So, sit back, relax and enjoy. Welcome back to Venice Theatre!

MEET MADELINE MCGRAIL
A CHRISTMAS CAROL, 2019
A PLACE FOR YOU We asked the newest member of our team, Artistic Director Benny Sato Ambush, what he finds special about Venice Theatre and why he believes you should join us. After his first couple of months on the job, here’s what Benny had to say about the benefits of volunteering and engaging with us.
Theatre is the greatest, most democratic of art forms because it can contain all the art forms. At its center is storytelling. And who doesn’t love a good story? Beyond the visible onstage actors, many unseen skills are necessary for the collaborative magic of theatre-making. Venice Theatre, a community theatre, truly involves the greater Venice community in all aspects of ‘putting on the show.’ Mentored by experienced professional staff, community volunteers are trained in a broad range of theatre-making skills: acting, singing, dancing, auditioning, improvisation, directing, set building, costume making, stage managing, and the like. We work with nearly all ages - from first graders to the forever young. Venice Theatre relies on these partnerships. Besides the fun involved, engaging with us can offer great benefits in all aspects of your life such as building the selfconfidence to present yourself confidently in public, honing your ability to focus, learning how to think quickly on your feet, solving problems imaginatively, strengthening your social intelligence by working with a diverse community of people, making choices, thinking originally and critically, exercising empathy, and perhaps most importantly, better understanding yourself and who you are. Said simply, community engagement at Venice Theatre is human development. Join us - we have a place for you.” Please go to VeniceTheatre.org/volunteer to learn about these opportunities and others, and to fill out an application. Performers interested in auditioning should visit VeniceTheatre.org/audition.
Volunteer Manager and Human Resources Director Venice Theatre has been part of my life since moving to Venice 43 years ago. Whether taking class, performing on stage, working backstage, or attending performances, Venice “Little” Theatre became home; a place of joy and safety to explore, express, and even escape the turbulence of life. The people in this community make VT home to so many. After years of traveling to pursue my education and explore various professional opportunities, I am honored to be back home as a full-time member of the theatre staff. What I love most is every day I get to connect with people who contribute their time and talents to the success of Venice Theatre. I get to hear their stories, learn from them, and become part of the VT story as each person adds another thread to the tapestry that makes us strong. On February 24th of 2020, I stepped into the position of Volunteer Manager and Human Resources Director. On Friday, March 13th the world came to a halt and has been ever-changing since. Due to the nature of my job, I was charged with leading the theatre’s Covid-19 Task Force. It has been a baptism of fire. Taking on the behemoth task of understanding and keeping current on the science behind the pandemic has been manageable only with the support of Venice Theatre’s leadership, staff, and a team of dedicated individuals from the community and medical field. The goal of the task force was and remains keeping everyone as safe as possible throughout the transition to this new paradigm we are living. My favorite quote has guided me through this time. Hungarian physicist, Edward Teller said: “When you come to the end of all the light you know, and it’s time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: Either you will be given something solid to stand on or you will be taught to fly.”

MEET BENNY Benny Sato Ambush, most recently from Boston, MA where he formerly served as Senior Distinguished Producing Director in Residence at Emerson College, began working with Venice Theatre as Artistic Director in late July of 2021. At the time of this writing, he has already held two sets of auditions, cast and begun rehearsing Almost, Maine, taught several workshops, attended every show and student showcase we’ve presented, listened a lot, and cheered us on as we started our first full season since the pandemic hit. Our Producing Executive Director Murray Chase says, “Benny is a superb director. While here, he will direct two of our shows, as well as work to secure artistic quality and consistency across the board.” Benny became acquainted with VT when he served as an adjudicator for our 2014 and 2018 international community theatre festivals and will help in the planning of the 2022 festival set for June 20-26. (See more on p. 25) A veteran Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) director, institutional theatre leader, educator, published commentator and consultant, Benny has been Artistic Director of three theaters, two of them professional - TheatreVirginia and Oakland Ensemble Theatre - and has held leadership positions at several other prestigious arts organizations across the U.S. He says, “I am blessed to artistically helm a theatre for the fourth time in my career - thank you Venice Theatre! My skill set, expertise, and aesthetic were forged, tested, and honed by experiences in multiple regions across the United States. I have personally witnessed the special bond that community members have with the Venice Theatre, now in its eighth decade.” He has a BA in Theatre Arts and Dramatic Literature from Brown University and an MFA in Directing from the University of California, San Diego. In 2020, he was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. Welcome Benny!

INTERMISSION WHILE YOU WERE AWAY
On March 13, 2020 when it became clear that we would need to close our doors, we figured there’d be a few canceled performances and that we’d soon be back in business. As weeks turned into months, we adjusted the best we could to our new reality. One of our slogans over the years has been “Our Curtain’s Always Up!” We were not accustomed to being closed for more than a few days at a time. As we worked to stay motivated, creative and productive, downtime was used to reorganize and regroup. The costume shop and production team reimagined our spaces to work more efficiently and cleared the way for renovations to come. Kim and Kristina did lots of extra cleaning and disinfecting with the help of Medrep Technologies and Jantize America. Our costume shop volunteers sewed masks from home. Our Education & Outreach Department quickly pivoted to teaching virtual classes. Story time with Kelly and Terrance became a YouTube hit. We all learned how to zoom! CONTINUED PAGE 42

MEET GRETCHEN
ROALD DAHL’S WILLY WONKA JR. SUMMER 2019
Gretchen Beaumier started taking classes at Venice Theatre at age 12. When she was old enough, she began working as a summer camp intern and for the last four summers has worked in the Education & Outreach Department as the Office Administrator. She graduated from UNC Greensboro in Spring of 2021 and returned to Venice year-round. Lucky for us, she’s getting even more involved at the theatre! Our young students are so excited that she’s teaching classes. Her level 2 middle school acting class filled up as soon as we offered it. Gretchen has a broad range of theatrical experience, from improvisation and directing, to stage management and technical theatre. When we were looking to hire a stage manager for this season’s Stage 2 production of The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful, Gretchen stepped up to take the reins of this technically complicated and fast-paced comedy.
Venice Theatre is proud of its top-notch Education & Outreach Department where opportunities abound for children, teens and lifelong learners. Students of all ages can come to Venice Theatre to learn about acting, singing, dance, comedy, technical theatre, theatre history, and more. Our team of professional instructors offers new classes and workshops each fall, spring and summer. Community interest in our classes just keeps growing and the only thing limiting what we can offer is space, which is why we can’t wait until the grand opening of our Arts Education Center in the Summer of 2022! Check out the latest class schedule at VeniceTheatre. org/education or call our Education & Outreach office at 941.486.8679 to register for classes today. FOR MORE EDUCATION & OUTREACH ON NEXT PAGE
We asked her what she enjoys most about VT and she said without hesitation, “The community. Ever since I first stepped foot in the building at age 12, VT has been a welcoming and comfortable space. I love that I get to help students discover their passion for the arts in the same place that I did. It is incredibly exciting to watch students grow and thrive because of the support they receive here.” After missing one summer at the theatre due to Covid-19, Gretchen was excited to come back. “We’ve all had a loss of social interaction to some degree over the last year and a half, no matter our age. It takes a minute to get used to being back, but I’ve found the theatre setting to be the perfect place for students to reconnect and regain confidence.” If meeting Gretchen has you thinking about how you can get involved at VT, check out classes and volunteer opportunities at VeniceTheatre.org.

teen spotlight Venice Theatre is fortunate to have teens in our midst who are talented, intelligent, and fun to be around. We are always looking for new ways to challenge our young people and keep them interested in the theatre. In recent years - at their request - we’ve strived to give our teens more opportunities to learn, grow, perform, and even direct. They’ve stepped up to help us develop programs like the Youth Production Company and the Teen Improv Troupe. They’ve taught us to become more savvy on social media. Each summer a group of middle and high school students work as interns for our education department. Add to this, the chance to be a part of SummerStock or the Technical Theatre Apprenticeship Program (TTAP) and we think VT is one of the coolest places for teens to hang out in Venice!
We have never been shy about giving teens an opportunity to shine. We have never been shy about giving teens an opportunity to shine. Kelly Duyn, now the assistant director of our Education & Outreach Department, was a recent high school graduate when Sandy Davisson invited her to teach her first class. Casey Trascik, now the head of the drama department at Venice High School, received her own high school diploma on the Venice (Little) Theatre stage because she was starring in a show and chose to miss her

graduation ceremony. Eli Schildkraut was just 12 years old when he was hired to music direct his first show. In 2019 we commissioned him to write two new songs for our version of A Christmas Carol. He recently graduated from Berklee College of Music. We’re excited to see where his career will take him. Broadway would be no surprise. Many of our young folks get their start with us when they are as little as kindergarteners. Quite a few of them stay involved through middle school and high school. Several return during their college breaks to be in SummerStock or our annual production of A Christmas Carol. Often, they keep in touch even after they begin their careers, perhaps doing a show with us now and then if they live in the area. Sometimes, like Kelly, they come back to work for us. We can’t think of a better endorsement for our education programs!
SUMMERSTOCK STUDENTS WORK IN SCENERY FOR INTO THE WOODS
YOUTH PRODUCTION COMPANY In 2018 a group of young actors, with the support of the Education & Outreach Department, started a new program that allows them to spread their wings and rise to a new level of leadership in the organization. The Youth Production Company (YPC) is designed to: • create opportunities for high school age students to develop exceptional & unique portfolio material for college applications • create additional performance and technical opportunities for area youth • create an environment for students to create art on their own terms, where they are responsible for all aspects of the project • develop 21st century workplace skills (collaboration, communication, problem solving, and creativity). We are delighted to report that after a forced break due to the pandemic, YPG is regrouping and accepting new applicants to plan their next production. Interested? Contact Kelly Duyn at 941.486.8679 or KellyDuyn@VeniceTheatre.net.
SUMMERSTOCK Directed by Brad Wages, VT SummerStock is a challenging training ground for young actors pursuing careers in theatre. The program began in 2007 with an energetic production of Footloose! This past summer our young performers entertained audiences with the hilarious Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein. Other summers have featured Broadway classics like Oklahoma!, Annie Get Your Gun and West Side Story; biblically-themed musicals like Jesus
Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor© Dreamcoat, and Godspell; historically important masterpieces like Cabaret; and contemporary fare like Zombie Prom and Urinetown. Auditions for our 2022 SummerStock program will be in April. Stay tuned! Venice Theatre’s Technical Theatre Apprenticeship Program (TTAP for short) teaches the craft of technical theatre to students from age 16 to adult. Venice Theatre TTAP graduates are spread across the country and world. Several have returned to Venice Theatre to work as paid professionals with our design team.
Director Luke McFatrich invites students in grades 9 -12 to audition for our Teen Improv Troupe. The troupe meets once a week for 9 weeks each semester to explore popular improv games, techniques and concepts in a fun, fast-paced environment. No experience is required. MEET JULIE
LEARNING IS A PROCESS; IT NEVER ENDS. Such is the approach for Venice Theatre’s education programs. We offer a “no shortcuts,” high-quality theatre training program with top-notch, caring instructors. Whether you’re in kindergarten or a lifelong learner looking to brush up on your theatre history, auditioning skills, or try your hand at improv, Venice Theatre is ready to make a dramatic impact on your life. When the theatre had to close due to Covid-19, our Education & Outreach Department didn’t miss a beat. Director Sandy Davisson and her team transitioned to virtual classes, staying connected with our local students and reaching new ones as far away as Scotland. Class offerings vary from semester to semester but will always include acting classes for all ages and experience levels, musical theatre, and behind-the-scenes specialty classes for those who are interested in what goes on backstage. You can also sign up for one and two-day workshops in case a longer commitment doesn’t work for your schedule. Our most recent semester offered a total of 27 different online and in-person classes for every age group including auditioning, playwriting, directing, and more.
JULIE KULIN, DISENCHANTED, 2019
Julie Kulin has been volunteering, taking classes and performing with Venice Theatre since she moved to Florida from Erie, Pennsylvania over five years ago. In fall 2021 she added directing to her resume as Assistant Director of Almost, Maine. When Covid-19 hit, Julie stayed involved with the theatre by taking virtual classes with us each semester - cold reading for auditions, acting, directing, performance art, playwriting. When we were ready to start in-person classes this summer, we could count on Julie to be there. We asked her what kept her coming back to virtual and in-person classes and she explained, “I really enjoy the people. It is such a positive experience for me. The teachers are very encouraging as well as the rest of the class. I feel supported and free to grow as an artist in an environment that is so welcoming. I also have made some new and wonderful friends through my Venice Theatre classes. I am so thankful for them.”
STUDENTS REHEARSING FOR THE SPRING CLASS SHOWCASE
Julie’s favorite hobby is performing. You’ve seen her on our Pinkerton Stage in Blood Brothers and Disenchanted. Her turns as Pocahontas and Princess Badroulbadour were stand-outs. One of the biggest challenges for her due to the Covid pandemic was losing the chance to perform. Julie says, “But because of the innovation of the education department here at Venice, the zoom classes helped to keep me going during a hard time of isolation and loneliness. These classes kept me going during such an uncertain time, and gave me goals to work on as an artist as well as giving me something to look forward to every week.” Check out the latest schedule of in-person and virtual classes and register at VeniceTheatre.org/education or call 941.486.8679

SAY YES TO AACT WORLDFEST REPRINTED FROM AACT SPOTLIGHT SEPT/OCT 2019
Kelli McLoud-Schingen is the Artistic/ Executive Director and founder of World Stage Theatre Company in Tulsa*. Her theatrical training was received at Aurora University, Roosevelt University the Oxford School of Drama. Kelli has directed for stages in The Netherlands,Chicago, and Tulsa and has performed as an amateur and professional actor in England, Chicago, Minneapolis, Houston, and Tulsa. *okworldstage.org
A FIRST-TIMER’S EXPERIENCE OF AACTWORLDFEST BY KELLI MCLOUD-SCHINGEN I’d like to tell you a story. 2018 was my first year joining AACT and I saw that aactWORLDFEST was going to be held later that summer. I registered right away - not because I knew what would happen at aactWORLDFEST, but exactly because I didn’t know what would happen. All I knew was that we were a new company and needed information on how to run the business. What better place to be than with others who are on the boards, technical directors, set designers, costumers, stage managers, actors, artistic directors, and more of community theatre! The fact that it was an international festival was a bonus for me. Our company is called World Stage Theatre Company and our mission is to give actors and audiences access to the world by telling multicultural, inspirational, and transformational stories that will connect our hearts CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

There are performances that I witnessed last year that haunt me and minds with people, places, and ideas. Having an opportunity to attend aactWORLDFEST, where there would be actors and performances from all over the world, was so exciting to me that I simply couldn’t miss it! I have to tell you; the festival didn’t disappoint. I came to the festival alone but by the first workshop I had already met someone who has become a good friend and mentor, Steven Butler, Artistic/Executive Director of Actor’s Warehouse in Gainesville, Florida. Steven’s organization had already been around for six years and he was willing to let me know how he built his company. Our missions are similar, so he shared his organizational structure, show ideas, and how he selected the directors for his shows. The connection with him has proven so incredibly helpful that I feel so lucky to have met him. By day two I had become a super-fan of the play, Pichanga performed by Cristián Lopez and directed by Manuel Ortiz of Chile. Manuel Ortiz is the executive director and founder of the Latinamerican Theater Corridor. This seven year old theater platform has partners in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain and Mexico. The Latinamerican Theater Corridor is a network partner at the International Amateur Theatre Association IATA, the same organization where AACT participates as the National Center in USA. It seemed a no-brainer that we would connect with them. I mentioned to them both that one day I hoped to bring their performance to Tulsa, Oklahoma. And lo and behold, when I returned home, Manuel informed me that he would be performing at Texas Nonprofit Theatre’s Fringe Festival in Fort Worth, Texas, which was only four hours from Tulsa. So, I quickly got permission from my board to host them and to produce Pichanga in Tulsa only three months after

aactWORLDFEST! I couldn’t believe it! The stars had aligned. Manuel and Cristián came to stay with my family for a full week. They facilitated a Documentary Theatre Workshop and two performances of Pichanga to critical acclaim! We promised that we would do more work together and Manuel has signed on to direct the first production of our 2019-2020 season. The show, She Like Girls, is a Playscripts play that I also found at aactWORLDFEST! There are performances that I witnessed last year that haunt me. I have dreams that I will also bring those shows to Tulsa someday: namely the performances from Argentina and Denver. So, let me go back to how I started this article - What do I get from aactWORLDFEST? Let me count the ways:
1 A bountiful network of community theatre professionals – both new and seasoned
2 Endless information and resources to help an organization survive and thrive
3 Friendly AACT staff and volunteers who are completely accessible, including the Executive Director Quiana Clark-Roland, who is really one of the most caring individuals I’ve met

5 The opportunity to experience a well-oiled community theatre machine through the hosting theatre company

VENICE THEATRE’S NEXT ACT WRITTEN BY CAMILLE CLINE, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
VISION For generations, Venice Theatre’s profile has risen. Each year, it expands the scope, scale, and diversity of its performances. It casts locally and it seeks talent from all over the world. It answers the community’s demand for fresh stories as well as familiar favorites. Its staff challenges professionals and students to find their voice and nurtures their process in achieving it. Venice Theatre enjoys a reputation locally, regionally, and nationally without equal for the quality of its work. But its facilities have not kept pace. Venice Theatre’s Vision Statement highlights the goals that its staff and volunteers have met year after year, to the extent that only one item remains: Facilities that provide comfortable, accessible, and safe housing for all our activities. The Next Act Capital Campaign is set to reach that goal and achieve that vision. CONTINUED PAGE 35

THE NEXT ACT: SPACE TO GROW When Venice Theatre purchased the Arts Education Center, formerly the Hamilton Building, with a $1,000,000 match gift from Dr. William H. As Venice Theatre grows, improvements to its scenes/lighting/sound, offices, workshops, prop shop, and box office will debut in later phases. Funds for the studios, scene shop, and other spaces throughout the three-building campus will grow to provide a hub for a whole new generation of acting, music, dancing, and art fans. Continued support from the local community and in-kind donations from theatre lovers is eagerly anticipated. Questions? Contact Camille Cline at Camille@VeniceTheatre.net or 941.539.8872 (call/text).

REMEMBERING ALLAN KOLLAR
HI! I’M ALLAN! EVERYBODY SAY HI ALLAN!
“Allan Kollar was one of the funniest, most passionate, most enthusiastic people I’ve ever met...and one of the most talented. He was like a brother.” ~ Venice Theatre Producing Executive Director, Murray Chase “The Georgia-born actor and director always had a distinct Southern charm combined with a sense of rebelliousness and mischievousness. … When he was directing, you could count on experiencing a sense of adventure. And when he was on stage … you always knew that he was going to take good care of whatever character he played.” ~ Jay Handelman, The Herald-Tribune CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

REMEMBERING ALLAN KOLLAR CONTINUED On Aug. 29, 2020 the Venice Theatre family suffered a huge loss. Our Artistic Director Allan Kollar battled cancer for six months before dying at the age of only 56. Because he was ill during the time of Covid, not many of us were able to spend time with him in his last months except for participating in a few drive-by parades past his house where he came out on the front lawn and - true-toform - entertained us. Allan missed the chance to see the theatre re-open after the pandemic; and now that we are producing again, things aren’t the same without his strong, quick-witted, passionate and compassionate presence. We’ll have no more curtain speeches that begin with “Hi, I’m Allan. Everybody say Hi Allan!” and end with, “In case of an emergency, proceed calmly to the nearest exit and I’ll meet you at Bogeys.” Hired by Producing Executive Director Murray Chase, Allan worked full-time at Venice Theatre for 22 years. He was integral in raising the theatre’s stature in our community, as well as nationally and internationally. Allan was the creator and driving force behind many innovative projects including: • Modernizing and computerizing the box office • Establishing the bar as a licensed business • Establishing and growing the concert season • Establishing and growing the annual cabaret festival • Establishing and growing the annual NYC trip • Establishing and nurturing the sister theatre/mentor program with Artists Collaborative Theatre in Kentucky.

Using his exceptional ability to work well with all types of people, Allan oversaw the growth of the theatre’s volunteer force, the programming for the volunteer parties, the establishment and growth of the acting intern program, and the growth and management of the production staff. He is remembered for the heart and soul he brought to his work. He is remembered by the friendships he cultivated in the theatre community. He is remembered by hundreds of actors who worked under his mentorship. He taught, he encouraged, he listened, he made us laugh, and he always put on a good show. In addition to being an accomplished director he was an award winning actor, both dramatic and comedic, who was a delight to work with and watch on stage. About acting with Allan, Murray says, “He had the fastest mind I ever knew. You could throw any curveball at him and he would handle it with ease. But you never knew what he would throw back at you.”
He taught, he encouraged, he listened, he made us laugh, and he always put on a good show.
MURRAY CHASE AND ALLAN KOLLAR IN GREATER TUNA, 2006
On July 27, 2021 - what would have been his 57th birthday - over 200 people gathered in the Jervey Theatre to celebrate Allan’s extraordinary life. Even more joined us online. Allan’s wife Kim graciously welcomed everyone to the theatre, cried a little, and laughed a lot more as she told a hilarious story or two. Allan’s brother, Eric, Reverend Evan Farrar, and Murray Chase shared remembrances. Video greetings were shown from George Grove of the Folk Legacy Trio and Stephanie Richards’ team from the Artists Collaborative Theatre in KY where Allan spent many summers as a mentor. A group of singers shared a beautiful rendition of “Walk with Me” from The Full Monty, one of Allan’s favorite musicals. The celebration closed with Kristofer Geddie and Brad Wages leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of the “Time Warp” from another favorite musical - The Rocky Horror Show. A reception followed at Sharky’s On the Pier with food generously donated by owner and friend of the theatre, Mike Pachota. Dozens of friends, colleagues and family members reminisced in the perfect Florida weather until after the sun went down over the Gulf. It was hard to say goodbye.

beyond our buildings
Venice Theatre loves to share the joy of live theatre with our community. Our programs are making a dramatic impact at schools, assisted living facilities, and other non-profit organizations in Venice and the surrounding area. We meet you where you are. Through programs such as Troupe In A Trunk, our Teen Improv Troupe, The Silver Foxes, and our TheatreMatters! partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs, we see firsthand how the arts make a difference in people’s lives. The Silver Foxes (see p. 47) can attest to the physical, cognitive, social and cultural benefits that come with performing. Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities build confidence, life skills, and experience the joy of performance through our Dynamic Drama classes.
In April of 2020 you supported us during the online Giving Challenge donating a remarkable $96,035.50. Because of matches offered by The Patterson Foundation and Dr. William H. Jervey Jr., that total grew to $288,106.50! In the fall of 2020, we were able to produce some small-scale live shows with strict safety protocols. Kristofer Geddie and Michelle Kasanofsky reopened the theatre with a cabaret called “Hope.” Lori and Murray Chase starred in A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters. Laurie, Candace and Kim performed The Vagina Monologues directed by Murray Chase. A few concerts and cabarets were added to the schedule, but after Dwight Icenhower performed an intimate tribute to Elvis, we had to shut down again as Covid cases rose.
These programs create performance opportunities outside of traditional theatre, bringing the community into the theatre and the theatre into the community! Please read on to learn more about VT’s outreach programs … theatre with a heart.
VOLUNTEER RITA MAZER WITH TROUPE IN A TRUNK AUDIENCE MEMBERS
In the winter and spring of 2021 we continued to teach, improve our spaces and raise funds. Under the leadership of Producing Executive Director Murray Chase and our board of directors, we kept our staff in place to be ready for when we could open again in April of 2021. It was then that Kiley and Casey Berkery wowed us with the musical john & jen. A few more concerts and cabarets kept us going through the beginning of May and then we closed for two months to begin renovations. The Jervey Theatre got a makeover with a beautiful new coat of paint and new carpeting. But before the carpeting could go in, all the seats had to come out! Add to this new bathrooms and a new bar and our main floor is looking great. We have many more renovations and plans to come as part of our Next Act Capital Campaign which you can learn more about in the pages of this program. Thank you for sticking with us during this challenging and exciting time!

beyond our building
THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB THEATRE MATTERS
First through fifth graders at the Robert and Joan Lee Boys and Girls Club can participate in our theatre arts program, THEATRE MATTERS! The program develops each student’s individual talents and skills. It also teaches them to work as a team. This increases their problem-solving skills and improves their presentation and communication skills. If you know a student who would benefit from THEATRE MATTERS!, contact The Boys and Girls Club at 941.485.7050. SCHOOL-TIME PERFORMANCES For the past several years we have invited area teachers, home school parents, and their students to enjoy and learn about theatre together. There’s nothing more exciting to us than when our building is filled with young people – many of them seeing a play for the first time. They
44 Venice Theatre Shownotes
never fail to become engaged in what they’re watching. We see it in their faces, hear it in their laughter and applause, and notice it in the questions they ask after the show. Our school-time productions have core-curriculum and social connections for students of all ages. The theatre provides teachers and students with tools to explore these wonderful stories. If you would like to learn more about bringing your students to a school-time performance, or would like to help defray the costs of this program with a donation, please contact Kristofer Geddie at KGeddie@VeniceTheatre.net. TROUPE IN A TRUNK We want as many young people as possible to experience the excitement of live theatre. With that goal in mind, each spring a small cast of volunteer actors rehearse an original play, pack their costumes and props in a trunk, and head out to area schools. Troupe in a Trunk is fun, but it’s also a powerful teaching tool. “Troupe” scripts have an educational theme and teachers are provided with study materials prior to performances.
For more information about how Troupe in a Trunk can perform at your school or to audition for this year’s play, call Kelly Duyn at 941.486.8679 or go to VeniceTheatre.org.

ENCORE! The Future. A prospect each of us faces on a daily basis. A prospect that is part promise, part peril; part excitement, part anxiety. And while many of us are content to let the future take its course - we are, after all, inherently optimistic - many others realize that by playing our part, we can shape the future rather than having it shape us. So it is with Venice Theatre. From its inception the theatre’s founders and leaders have looked to and planned for the future. The theatre has grown strategically, continuously - indeed, relentlessly. In doing so it has shaped individual lives and the life of the Venice community. And it has been able to do so through thoughtful planning and unyielding determination. In fact, it has shaped its future. Now an even more expansive future presents itself. With the purchase of the Arts Education Center, the conversion of the Annex to the Technical Arts Building, and a number of equipment improvements in the main building, Venice Theatre can create a future that will match the superb quality of its productions and education experiences. But we need your help. Please play your part in shaping this future - a future that will stimulate promise and excitement in both individual lives and in our community. The Next Act awaits. Places!
