Letter from the President Welcome to a new season of exciting RSU Hillcat Basketball!

As many of you know, our athletic programs have experienced tremendous success. The women's and men's basketball teams performed quite well during their first three seasons, and the attendance and enthusiasm of fans was tremendous.

Since becoming president of this great institution, I have been as impressed by the sportsmanship of our student-athletes as I have the quality of our athletic programs. I also have been impressed by the academic achievements of our student-athletes, who have experienced success in the classroom as well as on the playing field.

We are excited about the fourth season of RSU Basketball! Go Hillcats! Dr. Larry Rice

The University is pleased to be part of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) - two organizations that place a high priority on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are values that we share at RSU and impress upon our student-athletes every day.

President Rogers State University

Letter from the Athletic Director Welcome to Hillcat Basketball! It’s with great excitement and anticipation that we embark on our fourth season of basketball on the Hill. Last year both our men’s and women’s basketball teams enjoyed a 20-win season. Our women broke into the Top-25 for the first time, and our men ended their season knocking off three teams in the Top-25 to reach the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship.

up. We hope that you enjoy your afternoons and evenings spent cheering on our men’s and women’s teams at the Claremore Expo. We also hope you’ll follow the teams on the road by tuning in to our radio broadcasts on RSU Radio 91.3 FM or by visiting www.rsuhillcats.com. Your continued support is vital to all of our programs, and I hope you know how much it is appreciated. Together, we can build a strong foundation and a proud tradition for the future of RSU athletics.

Wren Baker Rarely in life does one get the chance to be a part of something at the foundational level. However, here at RSU we are all doing just that. The players, coaches, and fans are building our athletic tradition together from the ground Athletic Director Rogers State University

About RSU Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent (student credit hours), earning RSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities. RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,300 students, widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options, and hightechnology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

u RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's degrees and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management, and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU has received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

u The RSU nursing program enjoys a statewide reputation for quality.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semesterlong internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program. Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University, and the University of Oklahoma. The university also boasts an Honors Program, which

About RSU provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community. In addition, the President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities. RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, South Korea, and Wales through the University's Studies-atLarge Program. The international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize, and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in time for the fall 2010 semester. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and an amphitheater-style outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

u The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library features large study areas, a coffee bar, and wireless Internet throughout the facility.

The University broke ground in August on a new student apartment community that will double the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore in the fall of 2011. The $11.5 million project will accommodate up to 255 students in a three-level facility and will feature a clubhouse, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 92,991-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field, with a main entrance on Colonel Horne Drive. The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library opened in 2004. The library features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations, classrooms, and a coffee bar. u The Centennial Center features a cafĂŠ, bookstore, 24-hour computer lab, student lounge, and recreation area for students. The 50,000-square-foot facility also contains meeting rooms and a ballroom for the community.

About RSU

u Meyer Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the “West Point of the Southwest, OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

u RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted less than two years later in 2000. u RSU has more than 4,300 students enrolled on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to more than 4,300 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. It is the goal of the SAAD program to help all athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrew, is there every step of the way for all athletes to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs that will help enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining manners, dating manners, and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decisionmaking. Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

7

Hillcat LIFE Programs Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches, and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

Men’s Basketball Outlook In his first season at the helm of the RSU men’s basketball program, Justin Barkley will open the 2010-11 season with seven returners, six that saw significant playing time in 2009-10. The seventh, Maurice Rutherford, suffered a season ending injury early in the year. The roster also features seven newcomers, including five transfers and two true freshmen.

“One of our greatest strengths is that we have a close knit team,” Barkley said. “We have a lot of guys on this team who have been through the battles together over the past few years. Maurice Rutherford and Chris Francis have been in this program since existence. Matt Kellogg, Deveric Taylor, and Joey Twilley have all been in the program for three years. They understand what this program has been built on and have bought into the system.”

“We have a great nucleus of players to build on,” Barkley said. “We have a solid core group of veterans who have bought in to our system. I have been extremely pleased with our returners. Their attitude and work ethic has been great.”

Redshirt junior Joey Twilley appeared in 27 games and Jenks, Okla., native Alex Ewings played in all 33 games as a true freshman last season. The Hillcats look forward to having Rutherford back after rehabbing a knee injury from a year ago.

RETURNERS Seniors Deveric Taylor, John Boyd, Chris Francis, and Matt Kellogg return for their final season in a Hillcat uniform. As a junior, Taylor was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned secondteam all-conference honors for the second straight season. He finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game, and knocked down 63 baskets from above the 3point arc while leading the Hillcats to a sixthplace finish in the SAC.

“The first people I look toward for leadership are my seniors,” Barkley said. “We’ve got six seniors, four are returners, and they all understand where I am coming from as a coach and what we are trying to do day in and day out.”

NEWCOMERS Three newcomers who will have an immediate impact on the squad are Alburey Doss, Ajuma Jaramogi, and Brandon Mims. Doss, a 6-foot5 power forward, transfers to RSU from Missouri Southern. Jaramogi, a native of Port of Spain, Trinidad, stands at 6-foot-11 and comes to the Hill from the University of Arkansas-Monticello. Mims spent three seasons at LSU-Shreveport where he led the team in blocked shots and will finish his career at RSU.

Boyd averaged 11.4 points per game, pulling in 145 rebounds and blocking 17 shots. Francis played in 30 games, dishing out 46 assists and averaging seven points per game while Kellogg appeared in 28 games and earned academic AllSooner Athletic Conference honors.

“We will rely on our newcomers to fill in the gaps on our front line and in our post game,” Barkley stated. “I am looking forward to seeing Ajuma Jaramogi, Albury Doss, and Brandon Mims lace them up. They are three guys who come from basketball programs where there is a high expectation for winning basketball games and do things the right way.”

Men’s Basketball Outlook

u Joey Twilley appeared in 27 games as a red shirt sophomore in 2009-2010.

EXPECTATIONS Barkley set the expectations high for his squad in its fourth year of existence. The team made its first appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in 2009 but bowed out early. The team missed the tournament by one game in 2010 and looks to punch their ticket to the Dance in 2011. “Every year our goal is to make it to the National Tournament,” Barkley said. “To achieve that, everyone has to buy in. There are going to be some good days and some bad days, but it’s how we rebound from adversity that will determine our success.” The Hillcats are going to have to contend in conference play to achieve their ultimate goal. “There is no doubt about it; there is always someone from the SAC contending for the National Championship,” Barkley said. “If we can place ourselves high in this conference, I feel very strongly that we can have a great run in post season play. With 22 league games, we are going to have to battle for every win, which means we are going to have to play well throughout the year.”

12

Justin Barkley - Head Men’s Basketball Coach Justin Barkley enters his first season at the helm of the RSU men’s basketball program. Barkley, who served as the Hillcats’ assistant coach the previous two seasons, is the third head coach in the brief history of the program. Barkley helped guide the Hillcats to a 52-13 record over the past two years as an assistant. The Hillcats claimed the school’s first Sooner Athletic Conference championship, reached the NAIA National Tournament, and achieved a No. 1 national ranking in 2008-09. RSU notched its third straight 20-win season and reached the finals of SAC Postseason Tournament for the second straight year in 2009-10. Barkley began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Coach Larry Gipson at Northeastern State University following a storied playing career. He later spent two seasons as an assistant at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, where he helped the Norsemen to a 27-9 record and their first national tournament appearance in 16 years. Barkley left NEO to return home to the community where his father, Clyde, made the family name synonymous with basketball as the dean of Rogers County hoops for the past three decades. As a player, Justin Barkley led Inola High School to a state championship under the direction of his father in 1998. He continued his playing career at NSU, where he spurred the Redmen to a Division II National Championship in 2003. Since arriving on the Hill, Barkley has also assumed teaching duties in RSU’s Sport Management program. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters Degree in Health and Kinesiology.

13

Kyle Blankenship - Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Kyle Blankenship enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Hillcat men’s basketball team. Blankenship comes to Rogers State after coaching one season at Lamar State College – Port Arthur. In his lone year as an assistant, Blankenship helped guide the Seahawks to a record-breaking season, including a school-record 20 wins and a second place finish in the South Division of the Texas Eastern Conference (Region XIV). Blankenship is no stranger to NAIA Division I basketball. Prior to working at LSC-PA, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at perennial powerhouse Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Blankenship also played one season at LSUS, finishing his playing career in 2006 for the Pilots. As a player and coach, Blankenship helped the Pilots to a 109-27 overall record, two regular season Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) titles, four consecutive GCAC Tournament championships (2006-2009), and four straight NAIA National Tournament appearances (2006-2009). Blankenship guided the Pilots offense to a record-breaking season and a No. 1 national ranking in his final season as a player in 2005-06. He finished his career at LSUS as the school’s single-season assists leader (199) and single-game assists record holder (14), while leading the nation in assists-to-turnover ratio. Blankenship began his playing career at The University of Tulsa in 2001 where he was a team captain, three-year letter winner, and member of two Western Athletic Conference championship teams that made two consecutive appearances in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (2002 and 2003). Blankenship earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from The University of Tulsa in 2006. He is the grandson and nephew of two Hall of Fame Coaches in the State of Oklahoma, Gerald and Bill Blankenship.

Mike Cyprien - Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Mike Cyprien comes to RSU after coaching one season with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team Shockas Boys (15 and under) in Hammond, La., under Head Coach Chris Reed. During that same season, he coached Jefferson Playground (9-10 year-old all-stars) in Jefferson, La. Cyprien started his playing career at Southeastern Louisiana University in 2002 where he became a four-year letter winner for the Lions. After redshirting the 2002-03 season, Cyprien helped lead the Lions to a Southland Conference regular season championship in the 2003-04 season. In the 2004-05 season, the Lions were the Southland Conference Tournament champions and earned an appearance at the NCAA Tournament. The Cyprien family is rich in basketball. His uncle, Glenn Cyprien, is currently the top assistant coach for the Memphis Tigers and has also made coaching stops at Oklahoma State and Arkansas. His father, Michael Cyprien, played collegiately at Southern University at New Orleans. He also has a sister, Randi Cyprien, who played collegiately at Pensacola Junior College and William Carey University. Cyprien earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design with a concentration in Design/Drafting from Southeastern Louisiana University.

Men’s Basketball Season in Review

u The Hillcats appeared in the SAC Tournament championship for the second straight year.

The Rogers State men’s basketball team completed its third consecutive 20-win season and advanced to the Sooner Athletic Conference championship game for the second straight year during the 2009-2010 season.

The Hillcats made a surprise run through the SAC Tournament but finished one game away from returning to the NAIA National Tournament for the second consecutive season. RSU dropped No. 16 Oklahoma City and No. 6 Southern Nazarene on consecutive days to reach the championship game of the conference tournament. The Hillcats were gassed after defeating Top-20 opponents on back-to-back days and simply didn’t have enough fuel left in the tank to complete the journey. John Brown emerged from a defensive struggle with a strong second half and punched its ticket to the NAIA National Tournament with a 73-58 victory.

The Hillcat men’s basketball team began the year by winning seven of its first 10 games. However, the start of the conference season was unkind to the Hillcat hoopsters as they dropped their first four games in league play while battling injuries. A road victory over the University of Central Oklahoma on December 15 seemed to be the spark RSU needed. Junior forward John Boyd posted 17 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks in his debut as the Hillcats improved to 5-1 all-time against NCAA Division II opponents. The victory over the Bronchos ignited a fourgame winning streak and marked a turning point for the young Cats.

Junior Deveric Taylor was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and earned second-team all-conference honors for the second straight season. He averaged 12.8 points per game and poured in 63 3-point baskets while leading the Hillcats to a sixth place finish in the SAC. Fellow junior Matt Kellogg was named to the academic all-conference team.

Center Theo Davis was another welcomed late addition to the Hillcat frontcourt, adding his six-foot-ten frame to the mix for the second semester run. RSU recorded a pivotal two-game sweep during its annual West Texas road swing with victories over Lubbock Christian and Wayland Baptist in late January. The successful road trip pushed the Hillcats’ conference record over .500 for the first time all season.

Seniors Sylvester Spicer and Lance Sullivan both earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Sullivan was also honored with the tournament hustle award. Spicer led the Hillcats in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game. Sullivan led RSU in steals with 54 and assist, dishing out 117.

The Hillcats overwhelmed No. 25 Oklahoma Christian en route to a 74-46 victory in front of 1,324 fans on Senior Night. RSU won five out of six heading into the SAC Tournament.

TEDC0 PROSPECT LLC. (918) 789-3464 (918) 260-8160 Proud Sponsor of Hillcat Basketball

Women’s Basketball Outlook Although the RSU women’s basketball program completed its first 20-win season in 2009-2010, they fell short in achieving their ultimate goal – a trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

“There is no question that we have a void with the graduation of Jenny Hardin, who was our first ever first team all-conference selection and honorable mention AllAmerican, and Yoda Woods who was an honorable mention all conference selection,” Williams said. “When you lose two players of that caliber, you are obviously looking at trying to fill that void at the post and I think the great thing is we’ve got a couple of experienced players back this season who got to play alongside those kids last year.”

The Hillcats return six players from a year ago while adding five newcomers who look to complete the goal, a trip to Jackson, Tenn., for the Big Dance.

RETURNERS

NEWCOMERS

The Hillcats will turn to the veteran leadership of Hunter Peterson, Andrea Miles, and Candice Stewart, who return for their final season on the Hill. Peterson finished the 2009-10 season second in scoring and steals. She averaged 9.6 points per game with 46 steals on the season. Stewart led the team in steals with 52 while finishing second in assists with 52 and blocks with 18. In all, the Hillcats return five players who saw significant action last season.

The Hillcats welcome five new players to the squad for the fourth year of competition, including NCAA Division I transfers Courtney Crockett and Angie Criner. Crockett, a 5-foot-7 guard from Reading, Pa., is a senior transfer from Delaware State. Criner, a Tulsa, Okla., product, comes to RSU from the University of Georgia. “Two newcomers that stand out the most are Courtney Crockett and Angie Criner,” Williams said. “Crockett will play in the point position most of the time; she is capable in many different areas. Angie Criner is an extremely explosive athlete and very talented basketball player.”

“The biggest thing I look for in the returners is leadership,” Head W o m e n ’ s Basketball Coach Amy Williams said. Hunter Peterson and Andrea Miles have been in our program for the last three years and have been here as long as I’ve been here. They know what I’m going to say before I say it. I hope they can help impart to the new kids what it’s going to be like to play in the competitive Sooner Athletic Conference.”

Guards Kristy Henderson and Sasha Barnes also look to make an immediate impact in their first season at RSU. Henderson is a 5foot-8 senior transfer from the University of Great Falls (Mont.), and Barnes transfers to the Hill from Southwest Minnesota. Taylor Jeffs comes to the Hill as a highly-touted freshman from OologahTalala High School.

With the loss of honorable mention All-American Jenny Hardin and all-conference selection Yoda Woods, Coach Williams had the task of filling in the gaps. Sophomore Logan Froese and junior Brittani Smith were both significant contributors last season. Froese, a Claremore, Okla., native, played in 31 games as a freshman, averaging 6.6 points per game and finishing second in rebounds with 202. Smith, a transfer from UNLV, played in 30 games, blocking 10 shots.

Women’s Basketball Outlook

u The Hillcat Women broke into the top 25 for the first time in 2009-2010.

EXPECTATIONS RSU won 12 conference games in 2010, falling one game short of reaching the National Tournament. The Hillcats are confident that their veteran squad can take the next step in 2011. “Our team goal is to make it to the National Tournament. Last year we were knocking on the door but we ended the season one win away,” Williams said. “The kids in our program are competitive and they want to compete at the highest level and they know we get to do that night in and night out in this conference. To have the ability to showcase that on a national level is our team’s ultimate goal.”

Amy Williams - Head Women’s Basketball Coach Amy Williams begins her fourth season at the helm of the Hillcat women’s basketball program. Williams was named the first head women’s basketball coach at Rogers State University in March of 2007. In just three seasons, she has built a winning program at RSU. She led the Hillcats to a 13-18 record and a seventh place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference in its first year of competition. A year later, RSU posted 18 victories and finished sixth in the league, narrowly missing out on its first national tournament appearance. Last year, she led the Hillcats to a record of 21-11 and their first postseason victory. RSU knocked off four nationally ranked opponents and appeared in the Top 25 for the first time in 2009-10. Williams joined the Hillcats after successful coaching stints as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at The University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University. She previously worked as an assistant at the University of Texas-San Antonio and was a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. At Tulsa, Williams helped the Golden Hurricane claim its first Conference-USA regular season and tournament championships in 2006. The Hurricane also earned its first ever trip to the NCAA tournament and logged its first win in the field of 64, finishing the season with an impressive 26-6 record. Before joining TU, Williams served as the top assistant at Oklahoma State from 2001-2005. She compiled a number of accolades as the recruiting coordinator at OSU, including being named the 11th ranked recruiting coordinator in the nation based on impact to program and signing the Big XII Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2003. Her 2003 recruiting class ranked 19th in the country according to All-Star Girls Basketball Report. A native of Spearfish, S.D., Williams was a four-year letter-winner at the University of Nebraska. She earned Academic All-Big XII Conference honors as a senior in 1997-98 and was named a Phillips 66 Student-Athlete of the Week in 1997. After graduating from Nebraska, Williams joined the University of Nebraska-Kearney staff as a graduate assistant. After obtaining a Master of Arts in Education from UNK, she accepted her first full-time coaching position as an assistant at the University of Texas-San Antonio.

Bobby Cope - Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Bobby Cope joined the Hillcat coaching staff prior to the start of the 2009-2010 season and helped RSU to its first 20-win season and first appearance in the Top 25. Cope also worked as an assistant at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D., from 2003 to 2005 and coached both football and basketball at Colstrip High School in Colstrip, Mont., from 2005 to 2007. Cope develops and oversees the Hillcats’ strength and conditioning workouts and works primarily with the post players in skill development. He serves as recruiting and scouting coordinator and handles non-conference scheduling. Cope earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Black Hills State and a Masters of Health and Physical Education from Northern State. In addition to his coaching duties, he teaches a First Aid class in the Health and Sciences department at RSU during the fall semester.

Tandem Mays - Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Tandem Mays begins her third season at RSU after joining the basketball staff in August 2008. Mays was a four-year letter-winner and a three-year starter for the Golden Hurricane from 200307. She led TU to a regular season and conference tournament championship during her junior season and served as a team captain as a senior. Mays concluded her collegiate career with seven records on TU’s Top 10 list, including first in games played (123), second in assists (366) and ninth in points (836). She also led Fort Smith Northside High School to back-to-back state titles as a prep. RSU marks the first coaching stint for Mays after interning with the Tulsa women’s basketball program during her senior year. The Fort Smith, Ark., native graduated from TU with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. At RSU, Mays is involved with on-the-court coaching, recruiting, and scouting and works primarily with guards during skill development.

Women’s Basketball Season in Review The 2009-10 season was highlighted by a couple of firsts for the Rogers State women’s program. The Hillcats cracked the NAIA top 25 for the first time in history. Coach Amy Williams’ squad accomplished another first as RSU won 20 games in a season for the first time in program history. The season was also the first in which the Hillcats finished above .500 in the prestigious Sooner Athletic Conference.

Hardin for All-Conference were fellow senior Yoda Woods and junior Hunter Peterson, both named honorable mention. Hardin and senior Autumn Thompson claimed Academic All-Conference recognition. Six players are slated to return for the 2010-11 campaign as RSU says goodbye to the departing senior class of Hardin, Woods, Thompson, and Sophia Piggie. Joined by key transfers, the Hillcats will have their sights set on a trip to the National Tournament.

The Cats got off to a roaring start opening the season by winning ten of their first eleven games. The Hillcats were able to string two five-game winning streaks together during the stretch of games, with a loss to John Brown on the road being the only defeat at the time. The highlight of the early season came on December 5, when RSU knocked off then No. 15 Southern Nazarene 64-54 at the Claremore Expo. That victory was the first victory for RSU over a top 15 opponent. The 2009-10 Hillcats set the school scoring record with a 108-42 victory over Dallas Christian on December 12; it was the second game of the season in which the Cats hung over 100 points on Dallas Christian for the season. RSU knocked off then No. 25 ranked Southern Nazarene 63-62 on January 21 in Bethany, Okla., marking the second time in the season that an unranked Hillcat squad had defeated a ranked Crimson Storm team. That victory followed by a win over USAO gave the Cats enough momentum to jump into the NAIA top 25 for the first time in program history being ranked No. 25 on January 25, 2010. The women’s squad remained ranked at that spot for two weeks during which the Hillcats knocked off No. 20 Lubbock Christian on the road. A four game losing streak dropped RSU from the rankings, but the Cats responded by winning four straight games including a 68-56 victory over No. 20 Lubbock Christian. The victory over the Lady Chaparrals pushed the Hillcats to its highest mark in program history at No. 22 and in the driver’s seat for a berth into the NAIA National Tournament. But two losses to close out the regular season put thoughts of a trip to the Big Dance on the Cats play in the conference tournament. A 60-55 victory over Oklahoma Christian in the first round of the SAC tournament had the Hillcats thinking of a trip to the tournament. No. 5 Oklahoma Baptist ended those thoughts by defeating the Cats 87-75 in the second round of the conference tournament. Rogers State finished the season 21-11 with a 12-11 conference record. Senior Jenny Hardin became the first player in program history to earn All-American honors by being named NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. The Claremore native was named first team All-Sooner Athletic Conference after averaging 13.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Joining

u Candice Stewart was named the RSU Defensive Player of the Year in 2009-2010.
