Letter from the President Welcome to another exciting season of Hillcat baseball! As Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past 10 years, RSU has enjoyed dynamic growth across its entire enterprise, such as: • Increasing its student population by 60 percent while still maintaining a personalized attention to service that’s become RSU’s hallmark; • Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry; • Constructing two student apartment communities to provide the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university; • Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service. RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In only a few short years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connection to the community. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus. We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4 million renovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, but also represents their investment in the quality of life at Rogers State. As the RSU begins its first year as a NCAA Division II candidate, this season marks our last as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’s programs, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes. We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the diamond. Go Hillcats! Dr. Larry Rice

President Rogers State University

Letter from the Athletic Director Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the eighth edition of Hillcat Baseball. 2012 will forever be remembered as one of greatest years in the history of RSU baseball, culminating in the program’s first trip to the World Series and a National Runner-Up finish. The Hillcats have gained national recognition in recent years and are now regarded as one of the premiere programs in small college baseball. The Diamond Cats have increased their season win total in six of the last seven years and enter the 2013 campaign ranked in the Top 5 nationally. We are very proud of the team’s accomplishments and look forward to watching the Cats climb to even greater heights this spring. We are also very excited to unveil our newly renovated Diamond Sports Complex. Originally opened in 2007, the ballpark has undergone over $1.5 million in renovations and new construction over the past two years. We are so thankful to have the opportunity to showcase this first-class facility and look forward to hosting state, regional and national events for many years to come. We appreciate your interest in our fledging athletic programs and hope you will join us at the ballpark on a regular basis this spring. The outpouring of community support we’ve received has played a huge role in our early success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athletics as we strive to raise the bar once again in 2013. Thank you for all you do in support of the Hillcats! Ryan Bradley

About RSU

u RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor’s and associate degrees.

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success Story Rogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education. Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earning RSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academic programs, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitan area. RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technology, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development. Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studies through RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence in its nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a major accomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU. RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earn college credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

About RSU Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or the highest degrees available in their fields from esteemed institutions across the nation, including Princeton University, Duke University and the University of Oklahoma. The university’s Honors Program provides an atmosphere where scholars can challenge themselves academically to maximize their college experience through specialized courses, student/faculty joint research projects, and a strong emphasis on service learning in the community. The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year scholarship program that fosters personal and professional development, was designed for RSU students who have demonstrated leadership abilities. RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy and Wales through the University's Studies-at-Large Program. The international study programs provide students with opportunities to see the world, learn about other cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in 2010. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery and an outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days. RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartment community that doubles the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million project accommodates up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field. Stratton Taylor Library, which opened in 2004, features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations and classrooms. u Baird Hall features a performance studio, an art gallery and an outdoor classroom for learning on sunny days.

About RSU

u RSU is Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university.

A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the “West Point of the Southwest, OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country. In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000. Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to more than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all athletes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decision making.

5

Hillcat LIFE Programs Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body. Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

u Rogers State has annually been recognized as a NAIA Champion of Character since the inception of athletics.

“I have always dreamed of being a doctor, where I can help people and make a difference in their lives. RSU is giving me the chance to earn a bachelor’s degree that is perfect for pursuing medical school, while I can be active with campus organizations. Through RSU, I was able to get a summer internship with Grand River Dam Authority that gave me valuable real-world experience. It all adds up to make RSU the university I always wanted to attend.” KAITLYN LUNK Adair, OK Medical/Molecular Biology | President’s Leadership Class & Honors Program

2013 Baseball Season Outlook Catcher

In 2012, the Hillcats reached the NAIA World Series for the first time in program history while becoming the first RSU athletics team to compete in the championship game. With a 49-16 record and a No. 2 finish in the postseason poll, the Diamond Cats registered their best finish to date. Although the Hillcats made a magical run through the World Series in 2012, the 24 returners and 12 newcomers would like a second chance at the championship game in 2013.

With the graduation of everyday catcher Lance Rymel, behind the dish might be the place where RSU has the most question marks. “The catcher position is the biggest hole we have to fill on our roster this season,” Bradley said. “I look for us to go with a two-catcher system which is what we have done in the past; last year was an exception with Lance Rymel being the quarterback of our club. We have two kids coming back who saw limited time. (Emmanuel) De La Cruz had more at-bats than (McKenzie) Mathews but I think they will split time early.”

The Diamond Cats return six starting position players and four starting pitchers from last year’s club, including World Series Gold Glove winner Eric Baker along with standout pitchers Shawn Spainhoward and Brandon Bargas.

Emmanuel De La Cruz played in 35 games last season, starting 25 times, primarily as the designated hitter. He tallied 14 hits with six home runs. McKenzie Mathews played in 16 games last season and made six starts. He had a .278 batting average and a perfect fielding percentage.

Coach Bradley has compiled a talented group of newcomers to complement the veterans and believes the team has shown it is capable of big things in 2013. “We’ve got a quality club coming back,” Bradley said. “The difference will be how many close games we can win. Looking back on last season, we lost several close games in extra innings that decided the series. Our kids had a lot of resilience and won several close games down the stretch to put us in the World Series. It’s going to come down to getting that big hit or that big out. “

Coach Bradley added Ramcy Lora to the roster at semester. The Boston, Mass. native is a player who could make contributions at catcher, first base and the designated hitter position. “We did bring in a catcher at semester,” Bradley said. “Ramcy has proven he can provide quality depth and before the season is over I think he could be in the mix.”

First Base Cody Campbell returns for his third and final season on the Hill. The senior from St. Cloud, Fla. was the Hillcats’ everyday first baseman and started in all 63 games he played in a season ago. He finished the year with 96 RBI, 14 doubles and six home runs. “Cody Campbell is definitely penciled in as our everyday starter this season,” Bradley said. “We are looking for him to be a RBI guy, hitting in the five-hole. His offensive year wasn’t as good as it was his sophomore season but he had some big at-bats down the stretch in the postseason that really contributed to our success. He is a clutch hitter and I am looking for him to have an outstanding senior season for us.”

u Hector Rivera second base

2013 Baseball Season Outlook

Second Base

all-conference and named to the All-Region II Tournament Team.

Hector Rivera returns for his senior season after a solid year in 2012. The Manati, Puerto Rico native played in all 65 games last season, starting all but one contest. A mainstay at second base, Rivera finished second on the team in batting average (.353) and hits (79). He tallied 13 doubles, two triples and a pair of homeruns.

“Replacing our left side of the infield with the graduation of Cade McKewon and Randy Ramirez was a big hole to fill,” Bradley said. “Senior Tyler Wheeler is our penciled in everyday third baseman. He hits from the left side and I look for him to step in and contribute offensively while doing an adequate job defensively.”

“Hector definitely established himself as a quality second baseman last season,” Bradley said. “He was also good offensively, which was a pleasant surprise. He brings in a lot of leadership and experience to our club.”

Sophomore Jean-Francois Dumais-Fyfe could also see time in the hot corner.

Outfield

Sophomore Blake Heston and junior Nick Malter will also vie for time at second base. Heston played in 30 games as a true freshman while Malter redshirted with the Hillcats in 2012.

A trio of veterans return to the outfield for the Hillcats. Senior Eric Baker burst onto the scene in 2012, earning a Sooner Athletic Conference Gold Glove and the World Series Gold Glove. The Fort Gibson, Okla. native started in all 65 games last year and locked down the starting job in centerfield after leading the team in several offensive categories in 2012. As the leadoff hitter, he set the single-season record for hits (95), doubles (19), triples (6), at bats (239) and total bases (138) last season.

Shortstop Coach Bradley will look to Seminole State College transfer Jose Olazagasti to replace two-year starter Randy Ramirez at shortstop. Olazagasti was a two-time Gold Glove award winner and was named to the NJCAA AllRegion II team twice. Redshirt freshman Johan Ochoa and redshirt junior Hamilton Hernandez could also see time at shortstop.

Third base

“Eric Baker had an all-American year from his Gold Glove in the World Series to leading our team in hitting,” Bradley said. “He is an all-around player. His leadership, passion for the game and experience will be something we will rely on, especially in tight games. He is a difference maker. With his speed and experience he will carry the outfield with his gap-to-gap coverage.”

Newcomer Tyler Wheeler transferred to the Hill after one year at Cumberland University (Tenn.). Prior to his time at Cumberland, Wheeler played two seasons at Connors State (Okla.) under head coach Perry Keith. At Connors he earned a gold glove at third base, he was first team

Colton Campbell will return for his senior season in left field after starting in all 65 games last season. He earned a conference Gold Glove, led the team in home runs (7) and drove in a team-leading 59 runs.

“Jose brings the experience we need at shortstop,” Bradley said. “He is penciled in as our starting shortstop.”

10

2013 Baseball Season Outlook “Colton Campbell had a great year in left field a season ago; defensively he had an outstanding year,” Bradley said. “He is a lot better defensively than you would think; he is a big kid that runs well. He is a hard worker and I look for him to have another great year offensively for us.” Senior Keith Poverud was RSU’s everyday starter in right field last season but after an injury sidelined him for much of the fall, the position was opened to some competition. “Keith is penciled in as our everyday right fielder,” Bradley said. “Other guys in the mix are Blake Heston and Alex Cochran, who had really great preseasons. Whoever gets hot will play in right field. The versatility will help with matchups and we will be able to modify the lineup to our strengths.”

Pitching On the mound is where the Hillcats return the most experience and will serve as strength for the 2013 team. RSU returns seven hurlers from a season ago, including all three weekend starters who combined for 27 wins. Coach Bradley is expecting big things from the veteran pitchers who are paired with a talented group of newcomers. “Our pitching coach, Robert Brown, has been with me since we started the program and he does not get the recognition he deserves,” Bradley said. “I think a team is only as good as the players and staff and he has been a true key to our success. I really appreciated the job he has done for our program.”

Starters “You are only as good as your pitching,” Bradley said. “If you want to win a championship you have to have quality pitching. Fortunately, we have a quality pitching staff. Looking back on last year, that was the difference in our ball club.” Senior left-handed pitcher Shawn Spainhoward compiled an 11-2 record in 106 innings pitched with a 2.72 ERA for RSU last season. His 11 wins and 106 innings pitched were both RSU single-season records. “Shawn Spainhoward carried most of the bulk inning wise on our pitching staff, starting most of the nineinning games,” Bradley said. “We look for him to be the same guy he was last season, every time he goes to the mound we know we are going to get a quality start.”

u Senior southpaw Shawn Spainhoward returns after tallying an 11-2 record in 2012.

11

2013 Baseball Season Outlook

u In his first season on the Hill, Eric Baker set the single-season record in hits, doubles, triples, at-bats and total bases.

Relievers

Brandon Bargas, a southpaw from Owasso, Okla, tallied seven wins with a single-season record 114 strikeouts. He tossed 95.1 innings but his most memorable appearance came in the second round of the NAIA World Series where he helped the Cats upset No. 1 LSU-Shreveport, striking out a RSU single-game record 18 hitters in the complete game performance.

The Hillcats will have a variety of pitchers in the bullpen, including a host of lefties. South paw Casey Cassity returns for his fourth and final year on the Hill. The senior from Barnsdall, Okla. could start midweek and come out of the bullpen on the weekend. “Casey Cassity had some big starts and relief efforts for us last year,” Bradley said. “He has a mind for the game; he is a leader on our pitching staff and a great student. He can come out of the bullpen or start.”

“Brandon Bargas has the flash,” Bradley said. “He lights up the radar gun and is a strike out guy. His performance on the mound against LSUS at the World Series was the best I have ever seen and maybe the best I will ever see. Brandon is a competitor. Every time we go out we know those two lefties (Bargas/Spainhoward) are going to give us a chance to win.”

Hailing from Broken Arrow, Okla., sophomores T.J. Law and Mason Marquette could become crucial relief pitchers for the Hillcats.

Senior Kyle Duncan rounds out the trio of weekend starters. The right-handed pitcher tallied an 8-2 record last season with 83 innings of work.

“TJ Law is knocking on the door to become a key difference maker out of the bullpen,” Bradley said. “He had a good fall and he has matured over the last two years. Mason Marquette is one of those guys with the mindset he can get anyone out. That is the type of approach you want in a relief pitcher.”

“The biggest surprise of the year might have been Kyle Duncan, giving us quality starts every time he when out from the right side,” Bradley said. “He has worked hard in the preseason and I look for him to pick up right where he left off. He gives us three quality starters and now we are going to a four-game conference series we will need a fourth starter. We were able to sign two quality pitchers over the summer that will have a chance to make a big impact on our club.”

Junior Kyle Deaton and freshman Zach Tyson could will compete for time as well.

Closers The closer might be the place where RSU has the most question marks.

The Hillcats picked up a pair of pitchers who will vie for the fourth starting role during conference play. Jesus Del Rosario, a senior left-handed pitcher who transferred from Azusa Pacific, and Jesse Baird, a junior right-handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, will look to step into the No. 4 starter role.

“Coach Brown and I have discussed the closer role a lot and I feel like it is going to be determined as we go through the season. Consistency will be the key and hopefully someone will step forward and take control of that opportunity. Two young pitchers who could develop into the role are Shawn Patton and Colton Weeks.” Patton and Weeks, both left-handed pitchers, redshirted last season with the Hillcats.

2013 Baseball Season Outlook Schedule The Hillcats will open the season with their first seven games on the road before returning home for a sevengame home stand. RSU’s home opener will come against Baker (Kan.) for the second consecutive season. The four-game series is set for February 16th and 17th. Four teams from the Sooner Athletic Conference, including the Hillcats at No.5, are ranked in the 2012-13 NAIA Baseball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Diamond Cats open their 28-game conference slate at home on March 7th against St. Gregory’s (Okla.). RSU will then play back-to-back series against preseason No.10 Oklahoma Baptist and Mid-America Christian. RSU will round out the conference slate in April as the Hillcats face USAO, Wayland Baptist, No. 16 Lubbock Christian and No. 4 Oklahoma City. The conference is laid out a bit different in 2013 with each series moving to four games rather than three and all games will be seveninning contests. Last season’s regular season champion Oklahoma City and tournament champion Oklahoma Baptist will co-host the SAC Tournament, May 1-4. “The four-game series is going to be tough on our conference and is going to tag more losses on all the teams,” Bradley said. “It’s a challenging schedule this year. We have several NCAA DII school on the schedule in preparation for the transition next year. The four-game conference schedule is going to affect our midweek games. It will come down to pitching. Those midweek games are going to be important.” RSU will face three schools from the NCAA Division II Heartland Conference which the Hillcats will be joining next season. The Diamond Cats will also take on Northeastern Oklahoma State at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Okla. for the second consecutive season on April 16th. “It’s been a goal of our program since the beginning to make it to the World Series and now that our team has had the opportunity to experience it they want to get back there even more than before,” Bradley said. “But it is a long season and I have cautioned our team that we need to be concerned with the everyday challenges. They need to take care of each game. We will have to stay focused.”

u The Hillcats begin 2013 ranked No. 5 in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll.

Hillcat Baseball 2012 Season in Review

u Eric Baker returns for his senior season after earning first team all-conference honors and a SAC Gold Glove last season.

In the fall of 2011 the Rogers State baseball team lost one of its own, sophomore Tyler Brown. The Diamond Cats dedicated the 2012 season to their fallen teammate and honored him with the program’s best finish in RSU baseball history.

RSU rounded out the regular season with wins over NCAA Division II opponents Northeastern State and the University of Central Oklahoma. The Diamond Cats were unable to defend their SAC Tournament title from a year ago, falling twice in pool play. However, the No. 23 ranked Hillcats returned to the NAIA Opening Round for the second consecutive season and second time in the program’s short seven year history. RSU joined OBU in the Hutchinson, Kan. Bracket hosted by Tabor College. The five-team, double elimination bracket featured No. 17-ranked Judson (Ill.), Dakota State and host Tabor College.

RSU (49-16) produced its sixth straight winning season and its second 45-win season. The Cats opened the 2012 slate with a four-game sweep of Arlington Baptist in Texas which sparked a 12-game winning streak. The Hillcats suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Baker (Kan.) in extra innings. The Hillcats bounced back in the nightcap with a 12-2 victory and took the series, 3-2.

In the opening game of the tournament RSU registered 18 hits en route to a 9-5 victory over Judson University. The third-seeded Hillcats used extra inning heroics to advance to the championship game at the Opening Round as RSU defeated top-seeded Oklahoma Baptist, 5-4, in 11 innings at Hobart-Detter Field.

RSU went on to win its next five games, including a sweep over Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas. It took extra innings to complete the sweep over the Pioneers as RSU tallied a 9-6 win in 11 innings. The Hillcats followed up the sweep with an 11-5 win over Oklahoma Christian before Lubbock Christian spoiled the winning streak. The Chaps tallied wins in the first two games of the series, the second in extra innings, but the Diamond Cats avoided the sweep with a 7-3 win in the finale.

RSU clinched a trip to Lewiston, Idaho, as it won three straight games at the NAIA Opening Round in Hutchinson, Kan. May 10-12. Junior pitcher Kyle Duncan tossed a complete-game victory in the championship to propel the Diamond Cats past tournament host Tabor College, 7-3. Moments after the final out was recorded, the Hillcats took time to honor Brown who inspired their championship run. Tournament officials presented RSU with the Opening Round bracket following the program’s historic victory. Senior catcher Lance Rymel was given the honor of filling in the champions’ line of the bracket. After sealing the win in ink, Rymel paid tribute to Brown by inscribing “TB #23” across the top of the bracket.

The Hillcats avoided being swept all season but fell in three conference series. St. Gregory’s, No.6 Oklahoma Baptist and No.2 Oklahoma City earned series wins over the Cats, however, RSU tallied series wins over the University of Science and Arts and Northwestern Oklahoma State while breaking out the brooms against Southern Nazarene and Mid-America Christian.

They posted three come-from-behind victories and tallied a 4-2 record at the tournament. The Diamond Cats knocked off top-ranked and top-seeded LSU-Shreveport and second-seeded Lee (Tenn.), unexpectedly reaching the title game. GAME ONE RSU used a dramatic ninth inning rally to defeat No. 8 South Carolina Beaufort, 3-2, in the opening round at the World Series. After battling to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the eighth, the Hillcats gave up the goahead run in the bottom of the frame and had their backs against the wall in the top of the ninth. Seniors Randy Ramirez and Cade McKewon tallied consecutive singles to start the inning and Keith Poverud followed with a single to left-center to load the bases with no outs. Eric Baker belted a one-out two RBI single to right field to give the Hillcats the 3-2 lead. The Diamond Cats clung to the one run advantage in the bottom of the inning as Shawn Spainhoward earned the completegame win on the mound and the Cats registered their first World Series victory.

GAME TWO Junior Brandon Bargas and the Hillcats choreographed their second straight come-from-behind victory at the Avista-NAIA World Series with a 2-1 upset over top ranked and top seeded LSU-Shreveport. The Diamond Cats snapped the Pilots 16-game winning streak and handed them just their fifth loss of the season. It’s the first time in program history the Cats have topped the No.1 team in the country. Bargas tossed the complete-game victory as he fanned 18 batters and crushed the RSU single-game strikeout record of 11 set by Grant Cosby in 2010. The southpaw was just one strikeout shy of the World Series record of 19 set by Larry Crayton of East Carolina in 1961 and Mark Dilley of Winona State in 1962. After knotting the game 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Bargas helped his own cause in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff double down the left field line. Eric Baker followed and hit the ball towards the shortstop but the ball took a hop and hit pinch runner Taylor Estes who was called out, leaving the Hillcats with a runner on first with one out. Hector Rivera kept the offense going with a single to left field to put Baker in scoring position. Colton Campbell belted a RBI single to left and Baker scored from second, sliding in under the tag at home to give the Hillcats the lead for the first time in the game. The Pilots opened the ninth inning with a single to left field by Ridge Gonsoulin. Bargas retired the following batter and catcher Lance Rymel caught Gonsoulin stealing to give the Cats two outs. Greg Friesen worked the count full before he became Bargas’ 18th and final strikeout victim of the night, sealing the RSU win.

World Series Recap GAME THREE No. 4 seed Tennessee Wesleyan handed the Cats an 8-6 loss and sent them to the loser’s bracket as the Cats were unable to complete their third come-from-behind victory. The Hillcats fell behind early as the Bulldogs strung together a trio of one-out hits to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A RBI single to shallow right field by Colton Campbell knotted the score 1-1 in the fourth. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning as they posted five runs to regain the lead. TWU added to its lead in the sixth as Jordan Guida belted a home run, making it a 7-1 game. The Cats clawed their way back into the contest in the sixth when Randy Ramirez made his at bat count as he blasted a grand slam over the left field fence and cut the RSU deficit to 7-5. In the top of the seventh Hector Rivera drove Eric Baker home with a single through the right side of the infield and cut the Bulldogs lead to 7-6. Dale Ricketts hit a RBI double to left field in the bottom of the seventh to push the Bulldogs lead to 8-6. Baker saved a run and ended the inning as he robbed Thomas Sicking of a hit with a diving catch in right-center field. The Hillcats put a man on first in both the eighth and ninth innings but each frame ended with double play and no Hillcat runs.

GAME FOUR The Hillcats rallied to eliminate Point Park, 8-6, with their third come-frombehind win in the tournament to advance to the round of four. Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth with runners on second and third, Cade McKewon belted a RBI single to left field to send Taylor Estes home and tie the game. With bases loaded and two strikes against him, Eric Baker ripped the ball up the middle, scoring Ramirez and McKewon to give RSU the 86 lead. The two run advantage was all Shawn Spainhoward needed to close out the game on the mound as he faced the minimum to seal the win for the Hillcats. The junior southpaw tossed the final three innings and allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Diamond Sports Complex (Home of Hillcat Baseball) The Diamond Sports Complex is home to Rogers State baseball and softball. Originally constructed in 2007, the complex added stadium lighting in 2008. The Diamond Sports Complex recently completed renovations in Fall 2012 adding concessions, press boxes, coaches offices, donors’ suite, restrooms for patrons and new stadium seating. The Hillcat Baseball Field is located in the southwest corner of the Diamond Sports Complex on the northwest corner of RSU's Claremore Campus. It features a brand new professional playing surface, a large inning-by-inning scoreboard, batting cages adjacent to the home dugout and spacious grandstand and lawn chair areas for fans. A large locker room is located behind the Hillcat dugout that includes individual lockers, coaches offices, an athletic training area, bathrooms, showers and a 42inch flat screen television and DVD player. Lights were installed in time for the 2008 season and construction on a permanent press box facility was completed in 2012. The centerpiece at the Diamond Sports Complex is a 7,790 square-foot, two-story building positioned between the playing fields began construction in late July 2011 and opened in time for the start of the 2012-13 academic year. The first floor includes concessions and restrooms for patrons as well as two dressing rooms for umpires and multiple storage areas. The second floor features separate press boxes for baseball and softball, coaches’ offices, and a donors’ suite with indoor and outdoor seating. RSU Hillcat Sports Information Services Interviews

The “Hillcat” was developed and officially unveiled to the campus in 2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office of Public Relations – with the assistance of SME Branding of New York, N.Y.

All interviews should be setup through the sports information office. RSU head coaches are available throughout the week, mainly in the morning. Student-athletes are also available for interviews, typically right before or after practice. Most Hillcat teams practice between 3:00 p.m and 5:00 p.m. during the week. Credentials Request for credentials to athletic events should be made at least 48 hours in advance of the event and directed to the sports information office. Spouses, dates, children and non-working media will not be given a pass or assigned a seat on press row. RSU does not provide parking passes to the media.

Style Guidelines u When making a proper name ending in s possessive, DO NOT add an s: i.e. Coach Dicus’, NOT Coach Dicus’s. u In athletic media communications and publications, DO NOT use the term Lady Hillcats or Lady Cats. Hillcats, Cats, Softball Cats, Diamond Cats (baseball), etc. are acceptable. u Refer to the institution as Rogers State on first mention in news releases or other communications about sports events. The words university or college are understood in such releases, and are a commonly accepted practice within athletics.

Gameday Services RSU’s sports information office produces media guides for most sports and game notes for men’s and women’s basketball games, which include rosters, schedules and statistical leaders. Opponents are asked to supply RSU -- either via fax, email or with a link to availability on the web -- with detailed rosters, upto-date statistics and season scores, for use in our game day notes no later than a day before the event. Following a home event, RSU will supply all results to both home and visiting media. RSU always contacts the Claremore Progress, Tulsa World, Daily Oklahoman, and local TV and sports/news radio stations with scores and statistics (where applicable).

RSU Traditions Fear the Claw

Hillcat

Not long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball was introduced at RSU, the home court at the Claremore Expo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidable venue for opponents.

The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blue and red animal that serves as a source of campus pride and provides a visual identity for the university’s Athletics, Student Activities, and other school spirit programs.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herself on the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Center extends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the claw with their fists.

The “Hillcat” embodies the enthusiastic, determined and bold spirit of the university’s athletic programs and the pride our students and alumni feel for the institution.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the manner of the scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

It is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indigenous to northeast Oklahoma.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a free throw, the rowdy RSU student section has been known to intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’s fortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

The mascot also draws its name from “College Hill,” a traditional nickname for RSU. The university sits atop a hill overlooking the city of Claremore. The name was conceived independently by a group of RSU students in spring 2005, and approved by the University Mascot Committee, Student Government Association, President, and Administration.

Homecoming Week The university celebrated the first-ever Homecoming during the first week of November 2007, during the first Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball games.

The mascot was developed and officially unveiled to the campus in 2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office of Public Relations – with the assistance of SME Branding of New York, N.Y.

At RSU, Homecoming is a campus-wide tradition. A bonfire is typically held the night before the big games in the open area west of the University Village B student apartments.

Fight Song Hillcats of RSU Standing tall in Red and Blue We will prevail We refuse to fail Because our spirit's great We wear our colors proudly On our way to victory Go Rogers State!!!

A campus office decoration competition is held during Homecoming Week, in which students and staff members compete to show their Hillcat pride. The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf event played amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’s scenic Claremore campus. The game features special nondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, amateurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is to generate camaraderie among the university’s friends and alumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campus and establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecoming tradition.

Lyrics by Yvonne Pace Music by Clarence Woods/arr. Weller

Alma Mater Rise above the Claremore valley Camelot to view, Stands our gracious alma mater Thrusting t’ward the blue.

The Slam Dunk Contest and 3-point Shootout has become a yearly tradition held on the Thursday of Homecoming Week. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held outside of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of the most popular Homecoming events for students, alumni, and the community. For more information, visit www.rsu.edu/homecoming.

Lift the chorus, speed it onward For the Red and Blue, Hail to thee our alma mater Hail to R-S-U!
