Letter from the President Welcome to a new season of exciting RSU Hillcat Softball!

As many of you know, our athletic programs, although just a few years in existence, have experienced tremendous success. The RSU baseball and softball teams performed quite well during the 2010 season, and the attendance and enthusiasm of fans was tremendous.

Since becoming president of this great institution, I have been as impressed by the sportsmanship of our student-athletes as I have the quality of our athletic programs. I also have been impressed by the academic achievements of our student-athletes, who have experienced success in the classroom as well as on the playing field.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, has become the centerpiece of the main campus in Claremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facility combines student development programs under one roof, serves as a central location for students to study and socialize, and provides a focal point for the RSU campus in Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, conference centers, and meeting rooms for the community. A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on the Claremore campus was completed in 2010. The new Baird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of the leading-edge features associated with higher learning today, including classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and an outdoor classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

u The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library features large study areas, a coffee bar, and wireless Internet throughout the facility.

The University broke ground in August on a new student apartment community that will double the number of students living on the main campus in Claremore in the fall of 2011. The $11.5 million project will accommodate up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apartments. The new 92,991-square-foot complex is located just west of Soldier Field, with a main entrance on Colonel Horne Drive. The state-of-the-art Stratton Taylor Library opened in 2004. The library features distinguished collections, wireless Internet, study areas, reading rooms, computer stations, classrooms, and a coffee bar. u The Centennial Center features a cafĂŠ, bookstore, 24-hour computer lab, student lounge, and recreation area for students. The 50,000-square-foot facility also contains meeting rooms and a ballroom for the community.

A Brief History of RSU RSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters and sons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first building on the school's campus. However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971. Known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;West Point of the Southwest,â&#x20AC;? OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted a variety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiate athletics. In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted in 2000. Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs to more than 4,400 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Academic Development The Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete. Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work with tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future. The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrew, is there every step of the way for all athletes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE Programs The Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs: Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners, and courtesies. Each athlete is given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals. Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given examples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse. “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more careful decisionmaking. Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Hillcat LIFE Programs Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warned against gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules. RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities. The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions of Character program. The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches, and parents in our communities. Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

2011 Softball Season Outlook Rogers State softball enters the 2011 season with high expectations and a belief that the foundation has been set in the first two years of the Mark Dicus era. The Hillcats notched their fourth consecutive 30-win season in 2010 but were held short of getting their ticket punched to Decatur, Ala. Now with a strong nucleus returning for the 2011 campaign and a shot of energy from key newcomers, the Softball Cats have their eyes on the prize of a NAIA National Tournament berth and a trip to Gulf Shores, Ala. “We expect big things. We start every year with one goal and that’s to get to the National Championship and not just get there but get there and win it,” Dicus said. “If we hold together and continue to improve we’re more than capable of achieving that.”

RETURNERS With nine players returning that started a significant number of games, the Hillcats will bring more experience to every position on the field. Defensively it will all start with Katie Bointy, a four-year member of the Hillcat softball team. The Anadarko, Okla. native is considered to be one of the best defensive players on the team and will play a number of positions in 2011 after spending the majority of the past two seasons at the hot corner. Expected to take over the starting job at third base will be senior Sarah Harvey who missed time last season due to injury. In her junior season Harvey batted .441 with a slugging percentage of .725 and should bring more range to the hot corner defensively. “She is a coach’s dream,” Dicus stated. “She’s hardnosed, takes care of business and doesn’t say much. We predict her to put up big numbers, not to jinx her but she’s a good hitter.” Behind the plate will be a familiar face as Dina Ortiz returns for her senior season after starting 49 games in her first year on the Hill. Ortiz is a strong defender who is expected to become even more of a threat offensively for RSU. After a good preseason at the plate, Logan Zamora could be a surprise as a hitter while returning a good glove at second base. Joining her in the middle infield will be SAC Gold Glove winner and second-team all-conference shortstop Ashlie Fauchier. As a freshman, Fauchier started all 61 contests, recording only 15 errors with a fielding percentage of .945.

2011 Softball Season Outlook

NEWCOMERS

Coach Dicus explained the Choctaw, Okla. native’s first year, “Fauchier, you just can’t say enough about her, for a freshman last year she had an amazing year. She’ll bat in a more natural spot in the two-hole this year and as good as she was last year, I think the move in the line-up will only make her better.”

The list of newcomers for coach Dicus’ team consists of three freshmen, one sophomore and one junior. The new faces in the pitching circle highlight the recruiting class. The coaching staff believes it found a Canadian gem in sophomore pitcher Amanda Edwards. The Trail, British Columbia native is not only a good pitcher but swings a big bat and could be the four-hole in the Hillcat line-up.

Roaming centerfield will be Brittany White, as the Ashdown, Ark. native returns for her second season in Hillcat red and blue. White received first-team all-conference accolades in her junior season and will be the leadoff batter for coach Dicus’ squad in 2011.

As a sophomore at Muscatine Community College, Ashley Wailand finished with a record of 20-1, a 0.50 ERA and 119 strikeouts. The Davenport, Iowa native recorded her first perfect game in her final home game at Muscatine with a victory over Saint Ambrose. The junior will go back and forth with Edwards, but Dicus likes the combination of the two hurlers.

Shelby Brogdon returns to the line-up and will provide her big bat once again. The coaching staff is excited to see the development of Katrina Loy from last season once games get underway. Second-team all-conference selection Linsey Curtis will once again highlight the lineup offensively. In her first season, the Collinsville, Okla. native, was the Hillcats primary designated player, registering a school-record 26 home runs, ranking second in the NAIA, and tallied 80 RBI.

Dicus spoke of his belief in his new hurlers. “I know better than to say this, but already we’re better in the circle than what we were last year. Both of them are incredibly talented and they complement each other well. They both throw a lot of strikes and both pitch to our philosophy. With the defense they’ll have behind them, they’re going to give us a shot to win every day regardless of who we’re playing.”

“A phenomenal year offensively for Linsey, if she did that again it would be amazing,” Dicus exclaimed. “We expect her to be close to those numbers but the numbers she put up were just phenomenal. People are going to pitch around her so it’s going to be about how we protect her this season.”

The freshmen will bring depth to the Hillcats and will play an impact role throughout the season. Kirsten Leppla is a five-tool player according to the coaches while Kristin Blasingame and Taran Threet provide excellent depth as both can play multiple positions.

In all, the Hillcats return 12 players that saw time last season with seven of those players being seniors on the 2011 squad. Four of the 12 players are sophomores that were regular starters in 2010.

EXPECTATIONS

The 2011 schedule features 13 home dates spread over the season including RSU hosting the Border War Tournament for the second consecutive season. The non-conference schedule includes Trevecca Nazarene and Evangel, both of which frequently make the National Tournament. Central Baptist, winners of the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament last season, will face the Hillcats in the Border War Tournament this season.

The Hillcats will look to return to the national rankings after a two-year stint of sitting outside the top 25. But the goal remains the same as it’s been since the start of the program and that’s to make it to the NAIA National Tournament. “My expectations are always high,” Dicus stated emphatically. “We’ve talked as a staff that this is probably the most talented group of kids I’ve ever had. So we’re excited about that. The question will be can we stay healthy, are we going to be our own worst enemy or are we going to play to the level we should.”

The Sooner Athletic Conference adjusted the scheduling format for 2011, adopting divisions within the 10-team softball conference. Each team will play a home-andhome series a doubleheader against its fellow division members while playing against each team in the other division. The Hillcats will play in the same division with Mid-America Christian, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene, playing those teams at the Hillcat Complex and on the road.

“This is a good group,” Dicus said in summation. “They’re not going to surprise anybody. We’d surprise ourselves if we didn’t play well and we didn’t compete.”

The top eight teams will advance to the conference tournament on May 6 and 7 at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Mark Dicus - Head Softball Coach Head Softball Coach Mark Dicus begins his third season at the helm of the Rogers State softball program in 2011. In two seasons on the Hill, Dicus has helped RSU to 66 wins and consecutive fifth-place finishes in the Sooner Athletic Conference. In 2010, four players earned all-conference honors and one was placed on the Sooner Athletic Conference Gold Glove Team. In his first season (2009), Dicus had four players earn all-conference honors and one on the gold glove squad. Highly regarded for his recruiting ability, Dicus has added seven promising newcomers for the 2011 season. Prior to joining the Hillcats, Dicus spent a decade building a championship program at Seminole State College. In his 10 seasons at Seminole, Dicus led the Lady Trojans to a 550-196 overall record, claimed seven conference championships and made four national tournament appearances. He carved his niche as a softball guru during a 13-year run at Dewey High School. Dicus led the Bulldoggers to 13 straight state tournament appearances, reaching the championship game nine times while earning four state titles. He leaped to the college ranks in 1999 when he became the first head softball coach at Seminole State. Dicus won 79 percent (448-118) of his games as the softball coach at DHS and was named the Oklahoma State Coach of the Year four times for his efforts. He was honored as the National Federation Coach of the Year in 1994 and was elected to the Oklahoma High School Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002. Dicus is charged with guiding a Hillcat softball team that has quickly earned national respect and recognition in just four seasons of competition. RSU has achieved three consecutive 30-win seasons, including a program-best 42 victories in 2008. RSU achieved a Top 10 national ranking and defeated the eventual national champion, Lubbock Christian, in 2008 and knocked off national powerhouse Oklahoma City in 2009.

Amy Renault - Assistant Coach Assistant coach Amy Renault returns for her third year as a member of the RSU coaching staff. Renault returned home to begin her coaching career with the Hillcats in 2009. The Claremore native completed a standout playing career at the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in 2008. Renault was an all-state selection at Claremore High School and later earned all-conference honors at Connors State College before finishing at USAO. She completed her master’s degree in Sports Administration at East Central University in 2010 and has assumed teaching duties in RSU’s sport management program. Renault’s primary duties for the Hillcats include working with the infielders and coaching first base.

Jenny Johnson - Assistant Coach Assistant coach Jenny Johnson has moved outside the lines following a storied two-year playing career at RSU. Johnson led the Hillcats with her arm and her bat as a senior in 2009, amassing 29 pitching victories and a then school record 14 home runs. She posted a 44-23 record during her two-year career on the Hill. A native of Rohnert Park, Calif., Johnson will guide the RSU battery of pitchers and catchers. She is a 2010 graduate from RSU with a degree in sport management.

She was the recipient of the RSU Hillcat Award last season while finishing with six home runs, 18 RBI and also recording two saves as a pitcher. Bointy started 53 games at third base and was named to the SAC Gold Glove team as a sophomore in 2009. She also belted seven home runs and tallied 24 RBI in her second season as a starter at RSU. Bointy was voted RSU’s best defensive player in 2009. She started all 59 games as a freshman in 2008 and tied for second in total bases with 34. Bointy was an all-state selection as a senior at Anadarko High School after posting a .375 batting average and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Hillcat Softball 2010 Season in Review The 2010 season might be best remembered for a youth movement. The RSU roster was void of seniors and sophomores. New faces stepped up in a big way and left a lasting mark on the softball record books. Collinsville, Okla. native Linsey Curtis came out swinging her freshman season and burst on to the national scene, finishing second in the NAIA in home runs with 26. Curtis’ home run mark shattered the school record set just a year prior by Jenny Johnson with 14 that season. As the designated player for most of the season, Curtis also broke school single-season records for RBI, slugging percentage and total bases. Curtis was named SAC Player of the Week for March 8-14 after posting four home runs and 12 RBI. u The Hillcats went 11-3 to open the 2010 season led by Head Coach Mark Dicus.

Junior centerfielder Brittany White registered a school record 73 hits on the season, breaking the previous mark set by Megan Wood during the 2009 season. The Ashdown, Ark. native also broke school records for batting average with a .397 clip and stolen bases with 31.

In the second season of the Mark Dicus era, the Rogers State softball team reached the 30 win plateau for the fourth consecutive season on the way to a fifth place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.

Nine players that started a significant number of games in the 2010 season are expected to return for the 2011 campaign. The 2011 roster is slated to return 12 players that saw playing time. Seven of the 12 will be seniors in 2011 while the other five will be sophomores. Four of the sophomores were regular starters in Coach Dicus’ lineup.

It was a rough start for the Hillcats as they started with four wins in the first seven games of the season before reeling off a seven game winning streak, including sweeping Oklahoma Baptist at home. A loss to Williams Baptist broke the streak, but the Cats picked right back up and went on a six-game run to finish the early part of the season with a 21-5 record. Rogers State was able to claim a 7-1 victory over No. 3 Lubbock Christian at the Hillcat Complex on March 26, 2010. The Cats were unable to build upon the victory over the Lady Chaparrals, but rather went on a seven game skid, being swept by Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Christian on the road and Oklahoma City at home. The Hillcats hosted the Border War, RSU’s first ever round-robin tournament at the Hillcat Complex in early April. RSU went 5-1 as the host team and claimed the first ever Border War title. With victories over Bacone College, Kansas Wesleyan and Culver Stockton and two wins over Tabor College, the softball Cats not only claimed the tournament title, but completed a 10-game stretch from April 9-13 with a record of 9-1. Coach Dicus’ squad finished out the 2010 campaign being swept in Oklahoma City by the Stars and then losing to Southern Nazarene and Northwestern Oklahoma State in the SAC tournament to finish the season 35-26, 16-19 in conference play.

New Construction at the Hillcat Complex

u The RSU athletic department recently unveiled its plans for the completion of the Hillcat Baseball and Softball Complex.

These are exciting times on â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Hillâ&#x20AC;? in Claremore. RSU is experiencing unparalleled growth as one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities while our emerging athletic programs have enjoyed unprecedented success since their inception in 2006. RSU's rapid development brings with it a new level of expectations and a number of needs for improvement and expansion. We believe that now is the optimal time to begin a lasting partnership with RSU and Hillcat Athletics.

Providing our student-athletes with elite-level playing and training facilities is among our highest priorities during this crucial stage in our development. Completion of our new baseball and softball complex is at the top of our list. RSU is currently seeking donations and sponsorship opportunities for the facility with a fundraising goal of $500,000. These contributions will allow us to complete the third and final phase of construction at the complex, which will include additional grandstands, public restrooms, concessions, coaches' offices, a meeting room, central courtyard and much more. The completed facility will serve as the region's premiere multi-purpose athletic facility and afford RSU the opportunity to host multiple high-profile regional and national sporting events each year.
