Looking for a fast and effective way to change your body? Pure Barre may be your answer. Pure Barre is the nation’s largest and fastest growing barre concept. Since 2009, it has exploded in popularity and introduced its innovative technique in more than 300 studios across the U.S. Montgomery is fortunate to have two Pure Barre locations, one in Cloverdale and one in East Montgomery, together boasting 15 trained and certified teachers with all levels of training. Pure Barre uses small, isometric movements to create long, lean muscles with no impact on joints. Workouts tone the body and burn fat in no time, and clients have seen results in as little as ten classes. This is a proven technique that not only works but is also a blast! The hour-long group sessions fly by thanks to fast-paced classes and fun, motivating music. All ages, body
types, fitness levels and genders are welcome—anyone and everyone is invited. Tiffany Bell, co-owner of Pure Barre Montgomery and East Montgomery, shares the philosophy behind what they do. She said, “We motivate clients to work to push themselves and work in their deepest working zone every day, wherever that is for them. We meet you right where you are and help you meet your personal goals in each class, offering additional challenges or modifications as needed. Clients receive the energy and motivation from a group setting, all while receiving individual, hands-on attention and encouragement from our trained and certified teachers. We also routinely offer individual challenges with extra incentives for clients to help reach and exceed their goals.”
Pure Barre Montgomery and East Montgomery co-owner Katie Lowder shares Bell’s enthusiasm for Pure Barre. She said, “We truly believe in the Pure Barre brand and have witnessed the mental, emotional and physical results firsthand and through clients at Pure Barre Montgomery since opening in February 2013. Whether clients are looking to get in shape, build strength and confidence, make friends or mentally escape, Pure Barre provides a safe haven and positive environment for EVERYONE that walks through our doors.” Pure Barre offers classes seven days a week at both locations. In May of this year, I hit an emotional wall. Having recently graduated from college and facing the workplace, I began to struggle with self-esteem. I questioned long-term personal relationships, wondering, "What is wrong with me?" My health had begun to suffer, and I was facing medication. With the help of people who will always support me no matter what, I declared this "The Year of Carley.” My goal was to find peace with my personal life, professional life and social life. It is clear that exercise, diet and what I tell myself about the day is what follows me home. I had to get moving and find a way to become active again! I had to eat better! I had to put negative thoughts away for positive ones! For some time, I had looked at Pure Barre classes and thought this may be an answer for me. Guess what? I was right! After only a few months or about 25 classes - I have dropped a little over 35 pounds. On particularly stressful workdays, my salvation is at the barre. After 55 minutes of LTB (lift, tone, burn) my head is clear and the other results are a bonus. What an amazing group of people at Pure Barre Montgomery - so encouraging and helpful with technique. I can’t thank you all enough for helping me along my "Year of Carley.”

Get ready to hit the dance floor with Maya! Maya’s Belly Dancing is a dance fitness studio like no other. Their philosophy is to encourage participants to be healthy and to feel good about themselves through a fantastic dance class. While today’s culture seems to have a very narrow view of beauty, Maya’s wants each person to recognize and appreciate the beauty they naturally have—loving what
they see in the mirror and letting that confidence radiate to everything they do. Dancing, while being a fun and enjoyable form of exercise, also comes with a large number of health benefits. You can lose weight, strengthen and tone muscles without hurting joints, increase stamina and flexibility, and improve balance and posture. While you’re having fun shaking it up on the dance floor, you are lowering stress levels and cortisol, the hormone responsible for weight gain, particularly around the abdomen. Dance can also have an affect on your mind. Maya said, “Dance requires you to learn certain steps that can actually increase your brain power and help to improve balance and posture, and produce confidence, among other things.” Maya started teaching belly dancing in Montgomery in 2001. She opened her first studio in 2007 and started offering belly dance, Zumba and Latin dance classes. The studio closed in 2012 and became a “mobile studio,” teaching in various locations around Montgomery and nearby cities. In 2016, Maya’s Belly Dancing will be

She is AFAA group fitness and Zumba certified, and she has participated in six Zumba conventions and several belly dancing festivals around the world. Anyone can join in Maya’s classes. There is no experience required and no need to show your belly in class! With Maya’s patient instruction, students will learn dance moves in no time. While you can wear regular workout gear, everyone is encouraged to wear a belly dancing hip scarf, bracelets, earrings, lipstick and even high heels for the Latin Dance class – no partners needed. CoreVibes Studio is the only fully- equipped Pilates studio in the River Region and the only GYROTONIC® studio in Alabama. They are also an authorized Power Plate® Training Center. The focus at CoreVibes is attention to detail. Proper alignment is critical- any exercise performed with bad posture or bad form simply strengthens the bad form and leads to injury. They combine correct form, alignment and proper breathing to teach "mindful, intelligent movement." The results for strengthening, performance and pain relief are amazing!
CoreVibes Studio originally opened in 2001 at MetroFitness and then moved to Hampstead on December 1st. Owner Lynne Ellen Kershaw has been training for 21 years. She started taking Pilates lessons in 1994 because of severe back pain from scoliosis and from there decided to open her own studio. She and two other instructors hold certifications from the Pilates Method Alliance, which is the gold standard of Pilates certifications, and they hold certifications from GYROTONIC® and Power Plate®. They also hold certifications from Z Health, NeuroKinetic Therapy, Rocktape, Functional Movement Systems, and Restorative Breathing. Kershaw is passionate about motivating her clients. She said, “Each client is different! We try very hard to listen to individual goals and find novel ways to help our clients meet them. We are continually attending cutting-edge courses to pass along the latest research to our clients. Everyone wants results faster these days. Modern neuroscience helps us get our clients there faster! Example: Did you know the position of your eyes affects your strength on a pull up?” CoreVibes Studio offers a variety of private and semiprivate classes seven days a week. Their packages are “Buy 10 Get One Free” for all sessions. In January, they are offering memberships for even better deals. There is also a loyalty rewards program! Photos by Julie Lowry / Chanterelle Photography Every person is unique and has their own strengths, weaknesses and needs when it comes to being healthy and fit. At Iron Tribe East Montgomery, they recognize this fact and work diligently to customize workouts to each individual. Iron Tribe opened their Montgomery facility in May of 2013 and have five coaches with over 30 years of combined experience. Iron Tribe focuses on three main types of exercise—cardio,
weightlifting and body-weight movements. Cardio, which includes running and rowing, strengthens your heart, increases metabolism and can help ease symptoms of depression and fatigue. Weightlifting improves bone density and promotes fat-free body mass. Squats, sit-ups and pull-ups are in the category of body-weight movements. These increase core strength, flexibility and balance. Since not every member can do
every exercise, the coaches at Iron Tribe can scale any workout to fit any need. What makes Iron Tribe different from other facilities that offer similar workouts? It’s the “3 Cs” that Iron Tribe is built on—coaching, culture and class structure. The first C is coaching. With full-time coaches devoted to helping athletes experience a transformation, members feel like they have their own personal
trainer. Culture, the second C, is very important in creating a bond among members and coaches, enabling each person to become the best version of themselves. The last C is class structure. Classes are 45-minute workouts programmed by a team of expert coaches. You can expect the same level of excellence in every class, at every gym, across the country. One of their favorite transformation stories is that of Tomy Gamble. Coach Fred Turner said, “When Tomy started our 101 class, he weighed over 300 pounds and could not run 100 meters without stopping. It took him over 18 minutes to complete the baseline workout. Within a year, he lost over 60 pounds and dropped 10 inches from around his waist. A lady he had known for years actually introduced herself in a meeting because she
didn’t recognize him. On his oneyear anniversary, Tomy re-tested his baseline workout to see how much he had improved. He completed it in under six minutes. He also ran his first half marathon in 2015.” Every client can expect amazing results, just by taking the first step. Iron Tribe offers a flexible schedule and multiple packages depending on your goals. Want to “Try the Tribe?” Iron Tribe has a variety of ways to try before you buy. The best offers are given exclusively to people who sign up to receive free fitness reports and email updates at EastMontgomery@ IronTribeFitness.com. “From the moment I walked in the door, I could tell Iron Tribe was a special place. The facility is amazing! But the knowledge and personal attention of the coaches is what makes all the difference. When I began 101, I was sluggish; way overweight and had a daily BP averaging of 180/95. Since then I’ve lost over 30 pounds and my daily BP is down to 120/80. It’s called NShape, and they are just waiting for someone like you. At NShape, every time you walk through the door, you will be surrounded by a loving, supportive, authentic group of amazing people on the same journey together. NShape was founded in 2009, but moved to their current facility on Averitt Drive in 2013. Since their beginnings, the philosophy has been
a holistic one. They know that you “can’t outwork a bad diet.” With this in mind, NShape not only works out the total body through Tabata, H.I.I.T style cardio, body weight, and weightlifting, but they also focus on helping people to become part of a supportive community and to “find real, life-long health, which includes a diet that fuels and nourishes your body and mind.” When asked about the motivation behind NShape, owner Casie Scott
said, “Everyone has their own “why” when it comes to a commitment to health and fitness. For some, it’s their kids, their spouse or just themselves. I ask everyone to think hard about that and to make this choice about his or her “why.” Then, it’s all about supporting them— from checking in and advising on meal plans and organizing focused healthy eating group classes, to sending workouts to do at home or while traveling.”

NShape offers a variety of options for members, including group camps, individual training sessions and group classes for diet and proper nutrition. The sessions and classes fit any level and any schedule, and the first boot camp trial session is free. There’s even an added benefit of fellow clients coming together for fun runs and additional workouts on the side, just because! With all these benefits, it’s easy to see why members become addicted. Clients adopt the mentality of “this is my family. I don’t let down my family.” This pushes and motivates them. Successes are celebrated together, hard times are tackled as a team, and the support system gained by joining is IRON CLAD!
One success that was celebrated was that of Courtney Johnson. She shared, “Since October of 2014, I have lost 87 pounds. Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover the gratitude I have for Casie and my NShape family. Y’all are such a huge factor into making that achievement even a possibility. Casie has a heart of gold. If you are looking for a place that not only helps you reach your fitness goals, but also makes you feel like you’re part of a family, then look no further than MetroFitness. They opened their doors in January of 1999, with a focus on their members’ health and well-being. The entire staff at MetroFitness desires to create an atmosphere for all people to achieve success in their wellness journey. Leigh Anne Richards, part owner and general manager, has personally been in the fitness industry as an exercise leader for 28 years and in fitness business management for 20 years. She said, “Our philosophy at MetroFitness with instructors and trainers is encouragement. It is taking time to know the people that are members and learning what areas they struggle with, then keeping up with them on a personal level and making people feel part of a family.” MetroFitness is a full-service, all-inclusive health club. They open at 5:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. and offer all types of classes throughout the day. Variety is the name of
the game. Besides classes, members can choose to come in anytime and work out with weights, do cardio or run on the indoor track. They have great customer service and amenities, and their staff is always available to help if needed. MetroFitness offers several price options, including oneyear, six-month and three-month contracts, as well as monthly pricing with no contract. The first visit is always free, and they give seven days free for prospective clients. They also have punch cards for classes, corporate rates, couple and family memberships, and guest prices available, so there’s something for everyone. Members of MetroFitness can expect results. One success story is that of Dr. James and Abbie Dunning.
The Dunnings share, “With both of us holding degrees in exercise science and James being a physical therapist, we are literally real fitness enthusiasts. We joined MetroFitness three years ago and have used the club four to six days a week ever since – sometimes even more than once a day. We love that Metro provides both a relaxing as well as invigorating environment where we have all the equipment and classes we need to accomplish our fitness goals. The atmosphere is very positive and the place itself is extremely clean. We feel very comfortable using all the equipment, saunas and showers, which we couldn’t necessarily say about the other gyms we tried before joining Metro. Additionally, although Metro’s classes are highly popular, there is no need to arrive an hour earlier before a class or even sign up to reserve a spot or a spin bike – that makes working out very convenient. We highly recommend this club and have done so many times. We love it!” Interested? As a testament to the results their members/clients can see, client Eric Starkes said, “I started training with Terry and Jennifer about 5 years ago, and I am currently still training with them. When I walked in the gym, I was hesitant about it because I was so unhealthy and out of shape. I knew I had to start somewhere. When I walked through the door, my waist size was 48 inches, and I was on 5 different medications. I decided I wanted to get off my butt and take control of my life. Usually when someone thinks of the YMCA, the first things that come to mind are “gym and swim.” However, the YMCA of Greater Montgomery is so much more than that. According to Lara Lewis, “The YMCA of Greater Montgomery is a dynamic association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurture the potential of our youth, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause and our programs are always based on the needs and interests of our communities. We exist for a better you, for a better community, for a better us.” The YMCA has a rich history, especially in Montgomery. Their first building, the Downtown YMCA on Washington Avenue, was built in 1906 as a residence serving only boys and men with a membership of just 529 people. By 1912, membership doubled to 1,200. Four new branches were built in the 1950s, and growth has been steady since then, with new branches and Photos by Nick Drollette www.ymcamontgomery.org

CARA HATHCOCK
the LIST
After studying in Baltimore and working in Chicago, Cara Hathcock felt the need to return home to Montgomery. Cara says, “I love Montgomery. It is a great place to live and work. Although it is the state capital, Montgomery still has a small-town feel.” This small-town feeling is what brought Cara back. “I lived away for 10 years and once I got back, I knew this was where I was supposed to be.” Currently, Cara serves as the River Region division manager at Bell Media, LLC. Montgomery has been a great place for her to grow as a professional. She says, “I love being able to meet new people and help them and their business.” Her relationships with people are what mean the most to Cara. With much determination, Cara has achieved many things since earning her degree from the University of Maryland. The value of hard work, introduced by her parents, is what has led to Cara’s success. “I’m very thankful for wonderful parents who have shown me this value and instilled it in me from a very young age.” Cara has had many rising opportunities in her career. She says, “I love to learn and I think that being able to take on different opportunities in my career has helped me to continue to develop professionally.” Not only does Cara love working in Montgomery, she also enjoys life in the city. In her spare time, Cara volunteers at her church and, as a former college dancer, finds time to choreograph and teach dance. One of Cara’s favorite places in Montgomery is downtown, where she can have dinner, attend an event or even catch a baseball game. Cara loves spending time with family and friends, especially her pets, Marshall, Lily and Ginger.

Following his heart, Steven attended Virginia College in Montgomery for cosmetology and now is a hairstylist at Olivia A Salon. As a hairstylist, I have the power to literally change someone’s perception of themselves.” These clients from the community are the reason why Steven says he has been so successful. “The Montgomery community has greatly contributed to my success in the form of opportunities to expand my business and promote my name.” Another very influential person in his life and contributor to his success is his mother. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. She encouraged me to follow the career path that came naturally to me and that I enjoyed the most.” In the community, Steven stays involved by volunteering in retirement homes around Montgomery offering no-cost haircuts to the elderly inhabitants and volunteering at the Montgomery Humane Society. FUNKSGIVING
On November 28, hundreds gathered in the Union Station Train Shed in downtown Montgomery as nationally touring bands BYOG, The McLovins, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band came together for Funksgiving 2015. This groovy event was definitely a success and raised approximately $3,000 for the Parkisons Association of Central Alabama. The success is due, in large part, to the Funksgiving title sponsor360 Salon & Spa, as well as the other sponsors: Capitol Container, Zaxby’s, Vintage Year, Filet & Vine, SaZa Serious Italian, Capital City Club, Chris’s Hotdogs, 95.1 The Fox, LiveMusicDaily, and MOVI. There were several vendors in attendance from around the state. From Johnny’s BBQ in Moody, Alabama, to our very
own Chris’s Hotdogs, no one went home hungry. The mobile boutique, Southern Wanderer, and Hoops for Fitness from Birmingham were offering any last minute Black Friday deals before the show began. BYOG and The McLovins had the crowd jamming by the time Robert Randolph & the Family Band arrived on the scene. Robert Randolph is a unique performing artist from New Jersey with ties to the South—his uncle! Bishop David Randolph from the House of Greater Biblical Fellowship Church in Montgomery was in attendance and even joined his nephew and the band on stage for the song “Stand By Me.” All in all, Live & Listen made Funksgiving a success yet again! Air University Foundation Luncheon Photos by Airman Alexa Culbert

ne of America’s greatest historians once said, “No harm’s done to history by making it something someone would want to read.” That historian and two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author, Mr. David McCullough, was the honored guest and speaker at an Air University Foundation luncheon on November 16th at the Renaissance Hotel & Spa in downtown Montgomery. His recently released book, “The Wright Brothers,” is a New York Times best seller and was the subject of his speech in Montgomery, sharing insight on the resiliency of the Wright brothers and how Montgomery has honored their achievements. Mr. McCullough, along with Amanda Wright-Lane, great grandniece of the Wright brothers, signed books for guests following the luncheon. You may recognize some of his other best-selling books, “John Adams,” “1776,” “The Path Between the Seas,” “The Great Bridge,” “The Greater Journey” and many others. If you don’t know much about Mr. McCullough, do a little research as his accolades are pretty darn impressive. Proceeds raised from the event went to support the Air University Foundation, which complements Air University programs and initiatives by providing financial resources when, for policy or budgetary reasons, government funding is not available.

No Double Chin. No Surgery. No Kidding! By: Angela Hardgrave
Dr. Thomas Cawthon and Dr. Michael Bowman established River Region Facial Plastics in Montgomery in 2012. Both physicians are board certified in ear, nose, and throat and facial plastic surgery. They offer a wide variety of services to meet almost any need, including non-surgical options such as Botox® Cosmetic, facial fillers and chemical peels, and surgical procedures such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, neck liposculpting, ear lobe repair, rhinoplasty and scar revision. The physicians at River Region Facial Plastics specialize in the latest treatments and cutting edge technology in facial rejuvenation for cosmetic and medical reasons. RSVP spoke to Dr. Cawthon about one of the latest options offered to patients, a product called Kybella™. RSVP: We are focusing on your latest product, which I understand is exclusively at River Region Facial Plastics. What is it and how does it work?
Dr. Cawthon: The newest non-surgical addition to our anti-aging arsenal is Kybella™. Kybella™ is the brand name given for the product deoxycholic acid. The FDA released the product in April 2015 and is to be administered/injected by physicians only. Kybella™ is uniquely designed to metabolize fat in the area of the “double chin,” which is medically known as submental fullness, a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. Submental fullness detracts from an otherwise balanced facial appearance, leading to an older and heavier look, and it can be resistant to diet and exercise. A series of two or three injections is needed for most people who have moderate fullness under the chin. The injections are spaced out over a span of six weeks for each successive injection. The most common side effect after the injection is swelling at the injection site and is typically present for a period of three to four days following the procedure. The procedure is very comfortable as we use lidocaine to numb the targeted injection site. Our very first patient described the procedure as a breeze! Deoxycholic acid is a natural product of the body that specifically metabolizes fat cells in the body, so there are no allergic reactions to the product. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they are permanently removed and can no longer store or accumulate fat. The injection of Kybella™ compares very favorably with submental liposculpting and gives an alternative to those who do not wish to have surgery in this region. (continued on page 82)

BEFORE
AFTER 1 Treatment; 2 Treatments Recommended
RSVP: Who would benefit the most from Kybella™? Dr. Cawthon: While Kybella™ is great for a younger on-the-go person who often may not be able to afford downtime, Kybella™ is also a viable alternative to surgery for all age groups. RSVP: What results have you seen on your patients who have elected to have Kybella™ injections? Dr. Cawthon: The results we are seeing thus far have been very gratifying, and even if weight is changing in the rest of the body, this area does not resume its previous appearance after the injection of Kybella™. As is true with any type of treatment, there may be subtle differences in results between patients; however, we have seen a benefit to everyone who has received Kybella™ to date. We do recommend preparing for post-injection swelling the day after (at a minimum), but otherwise we consider this procedure to offer a “no downtime” alternative. RSVP: What can I do if I am interested in Kybella™ or in River Region Facial Plastics? Dr. Cawthon: Complimentary consultations are offered at our office so that we may take a look at your concerns and formulate a plan together to meet your budget and your goals. We are so excited to be the only place to offer Kybella™ in the River Region. Please call our office at 334.270.2003 or visit our website at RiverRegionFacialPlastics.com for more information.

HEALTHY in a HURRY Photos by Brooke Glassford / Colorbox Photographers
We’ve all heard the saying, “A moment on the lips, forever on the hips.” But enjoying your favorite savory treats doesn’t have to come with the extra guilt. Gone are the days of sacrificing flavor for results. When it comes to your fitness regimen, staying disciplined requires some serious willpower. Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. But let’s face it. We don’t always have time to prep our meals for the week ahead. Even if we do, we can’t pull out the Tupperware when meeting with clients at a restaurant.
This list of healthier menu options from some of our favorite restaurants will help you stay on track when cooking in the kitchen is just not in the cards. So, whether you’re on the go, out for a romantic night on the town or even just grabbing something to take home, you can enjoy these menu items without worrying about your waistline. You may even be surprised by the variety of restaurants that offer healthier options. Your taste buds and willpower will thank you for it. Bon Appetit!

Kale Quinoa
Avocado Mango Salad
Blackfinn Ameripub has a menu driven by guest choice. If it’s time for you to resist (if you possibly can) the bacon wrapped meatloaf or amazing shrimp & grits, then there is a range of menu items that are designated as on the lighter side. Look for the menu icon for lighter choices such as the lime-seared salmon, the California naked bird or one of their many salads. The mango avocado shrimp salad is packed with fresh ingredients and tossed with house-made mango vinaigrette. If you are looking for a few superfoods, the kale quinoa salad has got you covered. Dried cranberries and apricots, mint, carrot julienne, and pine nuts add to the flavor. No matter what you are in the mood for, Blackfinn Ameripub’s broad variety of classic American favorites will treat you to a great meal.

Dreamland BBQ 101 Tallapoosa St.
Barbecue sure is a Southern staple. Missing out on this Southern tradition and smoky, savory flavor would just be plain cruel! So if you’re looking for something high in flavor, high in protein, but also low in fat and won’t leave you hungry, check out Dreamland’s Bob’s salad and the smoked half chicken plate.
Smoked Half Chicken Plate Bob’s Salad
Bob’s Salad is a blend of romaine lettuce topped with cooked bell peppers, purple onions and diced pineapple, pulled white meat chicken, two cooked tomatoes, and jalapeños for a little kick. Then it’s all soaked in olive oil and vinegar. If the smoked half chicken plate is more your speed, you won’t be let down. We tasted it and there is truly nothing like it anywhere. They know the secret to cooking chicken and keeping it moist yet flavorful!
