By Angela Hardrave • Photos by Stephen Poff What’s better than looking fabulous? Looking fabulous for a fantastic cause, of course! That’s exactly the combination you will find at Montgomery’s Best Dressed Ball. The Best Dressed Ball is Montgomery’s premiere event for young professionals. This event honors the top 10 men and women who not only dress sharply and present themselves professionally, but are also recognized for their leadership and continued contributions to our community. This is the second year for this exciting event, which will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. at The Shoppes at EastChase. Suzanna Wasserman, marketing manager at The Shoppes at EastChase and chairperson for the Best Dressed Ball, said, “The evening will be packed with dancing, entertainment, dining and auctions, and will culminate in a fashion show. The event will showcase Montgomery’s finest restaurants, wines, spirits and brews to create an evening not to be forgotten.” Last year’s gala had some “outrageously splendid overthe-top” live auction packages such as spa packages, jewelry, several big ticket items, and more, and boasted a great selection of food and music. Wasserman explained the history of the event and its introduction to the River Region. “Best Dressed Ball was started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with the American Cancer Society. Meredith Wills with the American Cancer Society had the initiative to bring the event to Montgomery. She recruited Taylor Dunn and me to serve as chairs for the inaugural event in Montgomery. After visiting two other Best Dressed Ball events in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the team created the first event in October of 2016. With over 400 attendees, the inaugural Best Dressed Ball raised over $95,000 to help in the fight against cancer.

The community response to this campaign has been incredible!” Wasserman said. Proceeds from the campaign benefit the American Cancer Society in its efforts to fight against cancer in every community. According to their statistics, approximately 1.7 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year, and over 500,000 Americans will lose their battle with the disease. They want to change that. With over three million volunteers “saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by cancer,” they are the largest private, not-for-profit funder of cancer research in the United States and have invested over $4 billion in research since 1946. The American Cancer Society has been a part of saving more than 1.5 million lives over the past two decades and have contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates since 1991 and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Many of the young professionals chosen for the Best Dressed Ball have some connection with cancer, which makes the nomination even more meaningful to those involved. Tickets and sponsorship information can be found at montgomerysbestdressed.org or by calling Meredith Wills at 314.612.8177. Last year’s sponsors included The Shoppes at EastChase, Wind Creek Casino and Hotel in Montgomery, and Pure Barre, as well as several health organizations, foundations, law firms, media outlets and individuals. Whether you attend the ball, sponsor the event, or even donate to the American Cancer Society, you are taking part in an amazing event that honors some deserving individuals in the River Region and helps those who are battling overwhelming odds to hopefully and prayerfully celebrate another year with those they love.

You have sixty minutes. Sixty minutes to find clues, solves puzzles and riddles, and escape. ESCAPOLOGY, a new interactive gaming experience that opened in Montgomery on May 10th, is bringing people together as they act like sleuths, like Sherlock Holmes doing his best investigative work to break out of Budapest or Hong Kong. The catch is, you and your team are on the clock. An hour is the maximum amount of time you have to make your escape. Can you do it? A lot of people have found they can, and a lot of people have found ESCAPOLOGY to be an experience that joins them together as families or employees.

42

RSVP SEPT / OCT 2017

The premise is simple: Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to work as team, gathering in a group to work out a “whodunnit” scenario and break free of your location. With six themed rooms ranging in difficulty, ESCAPOLOGY is the place to be to test your wit and your skills as a problem solver. It’s not only a good time, ESCAPOLOGY also works as a bonding experience – one where colleagues, parents and children, or friends can work with one another toward the same goal – to get out.

work comes in. Once inside, you’ll feel as if you’re there – in Budapest or in Hong Kong, trying to escape a train or an 800-ton Chinese ship. The rooms are designed with precise detail, making you and your group feel as though you have slipped back in time, to another country or another period in history.

“ESCAPOLOGY has put in a lot of time and energy to make sure it’s an experience where you get lost, and you really do,” said General Manager Miles Smith. “It works really well for team building, and companies come here to bring people together. Corporate team building is huge. One of our larger markets is the team building experience. Employees are put in a room, and they have fun. They let their guard down very easily. Families also come in and forget about the arguments at home.”

“With ‘Budapest Express,’ you’re a detective in 1931 on a train from France to Budapest, and you truly feel like you’re on a train car during that time,” Smith said. “It’s chic and over the top; everything is designed to be very time-sensitive, making you feel like you’re somewhere else, but the goal is to escape back to Montgomery, Alabama.” ESCAPOLOLGY isn’t a game for children. It isn’t a game for adults. It’s a game for everyone. There is no right age to play, and for an hour, while you and your group scour for clues, you’re engrossed, transported back in time or somewhere far away while you fight your way back home.

MICHAEL FRITZ Michael Fritz certainly stays busy as he juggles working as an attorney for Fritz Law Firm, LLC, serving as an Army Reserve JAG officer, and teaching as an adjunct professor at Auburn University Montgomery. Originally from Clarksville, Georgia, Michael moved to the River Region to attend Auburn University Montgomery. After eight years of working for the federal government, Michael knew he wanted to enter private practice. He says, “When I opened my own practice, I had zero clients and zero income. I had to start from scratch.” Michael thrives on the relief he provides to his clients. He aids them on the path to financial recovery, something he says allows for a “fresh start.” Michael has a love for both law and Montgomery, something evident in the location of his office- sitting right between the place where Rosa Parks was forced to the back of the bus and the courthouse where Judge Johnson ruled doing so was unconstitutional. In his free time, Michael leads the Montgomery Ultimate Frisbee League and serves on the Montgomery City/County Library Board. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have two sons, 20-year-old Michael Fritz Jr. and 18-year-old William.

JESSIE ROSA Jessie Rosa serves as the senior director of athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery. During a time where AUM is undergoing a lot of change, such as transitioning to NCAA Division II from the NAIA, Jessie is constantly facing new challenges at her job. But those challenges do not deter her from what she considers is the most important part: “We bring in 18-year-old young adults and see them develop into educated contributors to their local community and society in general. I love the fact that our student-athletes come into their own when they are a part of our program. And when they come back to campus to visit, you really feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that the result is exactly what it should be — development of the person as a whole.” Jessie’s favorite part of being athletic director is connecting her student-athletes to the community. AUM’s athletes generated over 570 volunteer hours on 26 different community projects last year. As a recent colon cancer survivor, Jessie’s strength is apparent in every aspect of her life. Jessie’s wife, Brittney, and daughter, Charlee Marie, serve as her main supporters as she continues to influence AUM and Montgomery.

Eric calls Tampa, Florida, home but has enjoyed living in Montgomery since moving here in 2014. His parents have been a driving factor in his success so far, even contributing to his camera purchases. When Eric is not capturing the sights of Montgomery, he can be found surfing, cooking and salsa dancing. Eric’s rates are very reasonable; in fact, he says he can be paid in mac and cheese.

A Tough Pill to Swallow By Dr. Brian Richardson

A

upside down smiles in my direction. My naturally curious mind and a few recent conversations have led me to further inquire about this somewhat new and controversial practice.

We can all think of things we once turned our nose up to and now find quite delightful. However, there is one unique culinary item that I just can’t quite wrap my mind around. Placentophagy is the practice of consuming the placenta after child delivery. I’m not sure I would even mention this postpartum delicacy at the dinner table without receiving some

As I began preparing for this topic, I did have a discussion with my good friend Dr. Jason Gentry, an OB-GYN here in Montgomery. Apparently, although the practice is not common in Montgomery, there are those among us who have consumed the afterbirth. Typically, the decision needs to be made well in advance of the delivery and proper arrangements will need to be made. After the delivery, the placenta is harvested by a company representative who will then process the placenta into the delicacy of your choice. Popular options may include making a placenta, strawberry and banana smoothie, making a nice pate’, a pepperoni like pizza dish is an option, or some may do it like they do it at the Florabama- eat it raw like an oyster. I’m not sure how much hot sauce and crackers I would need, but I’m thinking a bottle of Sriracha would be about right. A new method some mothers may choose is to have the placenta encapsulated and take it in the

s a boy from South Alabama, I was raised on a traditional Southern cuisine. I will always remember those special occasions coming home to visit my parents and my mom would always ask for dinner requests. A typical mom-favorite might include homemade chicken ’n dumplings, black-eyed peas, fried okra or maybe a nice meatloaf. I used to think there could be no better meal than the food cooked with love by my mother. It was predictable. It was consistent. It was good! As I moved outside of Alabama and began expanding my culinary taste buds, I grew to enjoy other unique foods. Sushi quickly became a favorite food of mine. I remember the expression on my parent’s faces when I told them I had just indulged in a nice piece of raw tuna- they were just shy of disgusted.

pill form. I think taking a pill takes the excitement out of the experience. I consider myself a pretty rational person, and I had to seek out the motivation for this en vogue idea. Experts like Alicia Silverspoon and one of the Kardashians have testified that this practice may reduce the risk of postpartum depression, improve breast milk production and promote healing after delivery. Other experts in the medical field worry about the unintended and unknown consequences of eating the raw placenta or human parts. There is no question the placenta is a nutrient-rich organ that provides the perfect amount of nourishment to a developing baby. The question remains whether the placenta offers any benefit to the mother. A recent case was published that linked an infant’s bacterial infection to the passage of bacteria from the placenta thru the breast milk to the baby. The baby was treated appropriately and no long-term consequences were experienced.

TIME IS VALUAB L E . LESS JOURNEY MORE DESTINATION FLY MGM.

Another interesting justification of this behavior relies on the practice of other mammals. Since I was not raised on a farm and never spent much time watching live animal births, I also needed to rely on the expert testimony of others. I have now been formally educated on the common practice of animal placentophagy. I’m not sure my eldest dog, Abita, would participate in this practice, but my youngest dog, Sophie, has no problem eating dirt and Abita’s poop, so I could imagine her indulging in a placenta, raw-oyster style. There are currently studies underway which aim to determine if placenophagy is actually beneficial to the postpartum mother. Until those studies have resulted, we must rely on opinions and anecdotal evidence. But you know what they say about opinions, they’re like bellybuttons - everybody has one. So, if you are currently pregnant or are blessed to carry a child one day, I would encourage you to seek out further medical evidence when considering placentophagy. Alicia Silverspoon starred in many popular movies, and I would submit to you her hit film “Clueless” might be descriptive of her expert opinion when it involves medical matters.

J ason G i vens and the WAN D E R E R S

Jason Givens and the Wanderers have taken Montgomery’s music scene by storm over the past year. The band has seen its fair share of the spotlight after opening for Montgomery Gentry at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and drawing one of the biggest crowds The Shoppes at EastChase’s event Sounds of Summer has ever seen. After learning to play guitar at age 10, Jason Givens knew he had found his life’s calling. A native of Montgomery, Jason has been playing around the capital city for over 10 years. Aside from being the namesake of his band, Jason also serves many roles in his everyday life: husband to Sarah Anne Givens, father to three, guitar teacher to many students across Montgomery, worship leader at Vaughn Forest

Church, and songwriter. As the years passed, Jason spent a lot of time writing, composing and perfecting his music. With the welcoming of his first child, Jason knew it was time to finally release his own album. In 2014, “Falling in Love” was released on iTunes. All five songs were written by Jason himself and paint the story of his journey with his wife, Sarah Anne. One unique quality not seen in many bands today is the strong moral belief and faith portrayed in each member of Jason Givens and the Wanderers. Jason remarks that his faith has been a huge driving force in his career thus far. He says, “As a Christian, it’s not just about playing at church then playing somewhere else- like they’re separate. No, I am a Christian wherever I go and that shows in

my music.” Life in the music business is not always without temptation, but with God leading him and his band, Jason knows their values will prevail. His family has also played a vital role in his music, “It’s made music personal, whether it’s someone else’s music or my own. Songs can make you cry a lot easier when you’re a dad.” Jason’s own song, “Sights on Tennessee” is written about how much he misses his family while he is away from home. The love he has for his family is evident in any song he writes or performs. Jason Givens and the Wanderers is the perfect mix of country, Blues and rock ‘n’ roll. It is not uncommon to see one bandmate in cowboy boots and another in Converse tennis shoes. Their juxtaposed look matches their eclectic mix of music- something for everyone. For Jason, it is country all the way. He loves everything from Willie Nelson to The Eagles to Zac Brown. Specifically, he enjoys the intentional writing and story behind the songs. Chris Kratzer (bass guitarist) has more of the Pop/Funk feel in his style while the rest of the band- Fowler Holding (drums and guitar) and Stefan Slade (keys) - is a perfect mix between the two. Backstage, Jason and his bandmates look like any other group of buddies. “We have a great time together,” Jason remarks, “we really appreciate each other.”

Jason and his bandmate, Chris, have seen their band and families grow together over the past year. Two of their most prominent shows have been marked not only by success of the band, but also by the welcoming of two new fans into their lives. Jason and his wife had their third child less than three hours after a successful show at River Jam. Similarly, Chris and his wife had their baby just a few hours before the Montgomery Gentry show. Jason assures his fans that no babies are expected anytime soon, but it is certainly an exciting time for the band. So, what’s next for Jason Givens and the Wanderers? “I would love to have a couple of albums of original music, be touring or even just write music for other artists,” Jason says. Until Jason and the Wanderers make it big, be sure to keep up with the band on their Facebook page, Jason Givens and the Wanderers. Watch their pre-show vlogs, performance excerpts and the genuine interactions between each bandmate. Also, keep up with all their upcoming show dates and contact information for booking inquiries should you want to enjoy a great band with great values at your next event.

GROCERIES DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR By Angela Hardgrave

You may get some weird looks if you go to your local grocery store in pajamas, but what if the store came to you? Shopping from your comfy couch, waiting for your bread and milk to be delivered to your door—yes, please! One company makes that happen and has now expanded into the River Region. Shipt, a grocery delivery company, makes your dreams come true…if your dreams include having your groceries at your door in about an hour.

Shipt is a company with Southern roots, founded in Birmingham in 2014 by CEO Bill Smith. It has seen huge growth since then and is now in over 60 cities across the United States. Julie Coop, Shipt’s outreach and events team lead, shared some of the company’s history and philosophy. “Bill Smith started Shipt after he and his wife made a trip to the grocery store with their two young children (you can imagine what a challenge that can be), and as he was dreading going into the store, he had his ‘aha moment,’’ Coop said. She continued, “Shipt was founded with core values of convenience and quality, and our shoppers display an unparalleled level of customer service. They’re knowledgeable, friendly and personable. They are the bread and butter of Shipt and we are so proud of them.”

shoppers in each city. Coop said, “One of the things we’re most proud of at Shipt is the level of quality our shoppers provide. Not only are they super knowledgeable, but they’re attentive as well. On one of my very first orders, I had a bag of tortilla chips in my basket. My shopper noticed that I had chips, but no salsa or queso. So she asked if she could pick those up for me as well. She went out of her way to make sure that I had exactly what I needed and that my order was shopped exactly the way I would shop it myself. This is the kind of shopper that we hire and they are a huge piece of Shipt’s success!” “We are always accepting applicants! Our shoppers are our secret weapons, so we’re very selective in whom we hire. We’re looking for shoppers with a good knowledge of the grocery store and a knack for customer service. Applicants undergo a video interview and a background check,” said Coop. Coop loves working with Southern-based Shipt. She said, “We’re in the business of helping people out and saving them time! The fact that we’re able to make people happy and that they’re able to spend more time doing what’s important to them makes it all worth it! We love meeting new people from cities all across the U.S., but Alabama does hold a very special place in our hearts. Our Alabama members play a huge role in Shipt’s success. The city of Birmingham and the state as a whole has accepted us with open arms. They’re just as proud of us as we are to be Alabama-bred!” To sign up for Shipt’s grocery delivery program or to apply to be a Shipt Shopper, visit shipt.com.

Here’s how Shipt works: first, sign up for a membership, which is $99 per year. Members receive unlimited deliveries for 365 days. Download the app and start shopping! Shipt’s awesome team of shoppers who can, “pick a perfect mango with their eyes closed and navigate 40,000 grocery items faster than you can say ‘organic gluten-free pastry flour,’’’ go the store, select the items on the member’s list, and deliver them to their home or business on the same day. Shipt is adding a new city to their service area weekly, and they plan to be in more than 100 cities by next summer. All of that growth requires a great team of

WINGERS SPORTS GRILL By Anna Shay Wasden • Photos by Nick Drollette

At Wingers Sports Grill, the food possibilities are endless. A staple in Montgomery since 2004, Lee Peña and his wife, Mison, have been serving up some of the most unique combinations to grace our Capital City. After reopening in 2014, the growth for Wingers has been exponential. Recently, they opened their doors in Auburn and are very optimistic that business will take off this football season. But two restaurants were not enough for Lee; look for the third location of Wingers coming to downtown Montgomery in the coming months. Lee says, “I would like to see Wingers grow to its maximum potential. We take it one day at a time as of right now.” What is the maximum potential to Lee? Franchising is one thing on his list. With opportunities constantly opening in the restaurant business, Lee sees Wingers becoming a huge hit in other parts of Alabama. At Wingers, family comes first. “We are a family-oriented restaurant that loves sports,” Lee says. Many families with young children are repeat customers, as well as children who have grown up to be adults right before the Wingers family’s eyes. As for Lee’s own family, their influence in the restaurant is apparent. It was Mison’s dream to own her own restaurant, and little did Lee realize that he would be the driving force behind her success for so many years. Mison’s recipes, combined with Lee’s business-savvy mind, led the couple to instant success. Their daughter waited tables and helped in every way she could while 62

attending The University of Alabama. The influence family has on Wingers is obvious in every aspect of the restaurant -- a quality Lee hopes will continue as they grow. It is easy to see Wingers’ growth as the shining star, but their food is not easily overshadowed. Mison is a native of South Korea, and she incorporates her heritage into many dishes on the menu. Her fried rice and egg rolls are fan favorites, something uncommon for a traditional wing restaurant. Along with his top three picks, Lee also highlights Wingers’ burgers, fish and salads. Recently named one of Al.com’s Top 18 Wings in Alabama, Wingers has the accolades to back up their delicious eats. Lee says, “Montgomery has been very, very receptive to our wings. We have a loyal customer base that has been coming to Wingers for years.” After 20 years in the military and 20 more working for the federal government, Lee has been all over the world. He settled in Montgomery in 2000, seeing it as the ideal place to raise a family. Since then, Lee has loved the small, yet metropolitan feel of Montgomery. He prides himself on hiring local people in his restaurant. As Wingers continues to grow, Lee knows that each day will present a new challenge, but through the support of his customers and love from his family, he knows the sky is the limit.

1 Wings: As the namesake of the restaurant, Winger’s wings are the top choice for all patrons. Every wing sauce is homemade right in the kitchen, and that certainly shows. The hot sauce specifically has a unique taste unlike anywhere else.

2 Philly Cheesesteak: Lee lived in Philadelphia for four years and ate his way through the city’s most beloved cheesesteak restaurants. He has perfected the art of Philly cheesesteaks and makes, arguably, the best in Montgomery. Each sandwich is made with Amoroso bread straight from Philadelphia.

3 Fried Rice: Wingers was, presumably, the very first restaurant to bring the wings and fried rice pairing to the River Region. There have been others to try, but none have been as successful as Wingers. The unique combination is something Lee says everyone must try at least once.

Wear them as many times as you would like, then send them back for a whole new shipment of styles. Found a keeper that you cannot bear to send back? There is an option to purchase anything at a discount.

Rent the Runway Offering two options, Rent the Runway is the ultimate spot for “looks for less.” Option 1: Just need something for a specific event coming up?
