Be Our Guest Inspirations for the Season

By Peyton Flowers Whether it’s a fancy dinner party or a casual get-together with family and friends, this time of year is never short of parties. While the fun memories of holiday cheer will be what we hold on to for years to come, great décor can be pretty memorable, too. You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to design a beautiful, instagramworthy tablescape. Your decor can be over the top or minimalistic – either way, it can still set the mood and make an impact! Take a cue from these local designers and allow these photos to inspire you to design a table you’ll love all season long. ‘Tis the season to be jolly…and to celebrate!

Photos by: Kim Box/Kim Box Photography Photo by Aubrie Moates

Once the table is set and the guest list is made, you’ve got to create the menu. We love this cider recipe from Tammy Griffin with A Catered Affair.

Cranberry Pomegranate Cider

Deer antlers, a green wreath with a pretty ribbon and white tree candles are elements that will last all winter long, even after Santa has made his way back to the North Pole. Twinkle lights in a large glass vase and placed around a centerpiece add a sparkle that makes a statement. This clean and fresh approach to holiday décor is the perfect example of how chic a minimalistic approach can be.

4 Cinnamon sticks 1⁄2 teaspoon each ground cloves, nutmeg, ginger 1 cup sugar 1 gallon Cranberry Juice 1 gallon Apple Juice 3 cups Pomegranate Juice 1 cup Orange Juice Add all ingredients in a pot and simmer for about 20 minutes. Add to punch bowl when ready to serve. For garnish, add fresh cranberries and oranges stuffed with whole cloves. Stores well in refrigerator and can heat individually in microwave. *Don’t pour hot liquid directly into ceramic punch bowl. Allow to cool slightly & pour slowly.

Having some light bites on display adds color to your table and gives guests a chance to snack before the meal is ready. Don’t let styling a food plate intimidate you, it is easier than it looks. Use easy-toeat foods in a variety of colors and textures.

Greeting your guests with a cocktail is always a good idea, especially in barware that complements your table. Create a happy harvest tablescape with pretty blooms and warm accent pieces. It’s easy to be thankful when you’re sharing a table this beautiful. 36

Art in Motion…and on a Mission By: Peyton Flowers • Photos by: Aubrie Moates

I

t is a rare thing to align your passion with your job and be able to help people along the way, but Dr. Ruth Penton Polson is doing just that. With her athleisure brand, REP Active Art, Ruth found a way to combine her love of art and fitness with inspiring and empowering women to be confidently expressive and to find their voice and inner strength. She puts that same energy into raising her daughter, Emma, who is the “E” in REP. Growing up, Ruth always had a love for art but it served merely as a hobby, then later as a creative outlet during dental school, until a near-death car accident in 2008 left Ruth with a broken back and a forced medical leave from her dental practice. Her accident came during a time when she was focused on her health and fitness and was in the best shape of her life, a cause she feels allowed her body to heal more quickly. Her active lifestyle pre-accident may have helped her heal physically, but her art helped her heal mentally. Her hobby slowly became more than just a hobby, and Ruth began selling her artwork in high-end home interior boutiques in the Birmingham area.

Still passionate about fitness, Ruth had a vision of transforming her art into activewear leggings, and REP Active Art was born. These leggings, available in shorts, capri and ankle length, are superior to most thanks to their high waist and buttery-soft, cellulitemasking, lint-free fabric. The unique and vibrant artwork is just the icing on the cake. REP Active Art leggings make a statement everywhere – while working out in the gym or out to dinner with friends paired with a tunic and cute booties. Each pair is named after a woman in Ruth’s life that has been an inspiration to her, and REP Active Art’s Brand Ambassador program allows other women to be an inspiration as well. As a brand ambassador, women can earn extra income while creating community and journeying toward fitness and wholeness. This is all in line with REP Active Art’s mission to empower women to be bold, bright and fit! For more information about REP Active Art and to shop for products, visit www.repactiveart.com or contact Emily Foy, Montgomery’s local brand ambassador, at emilyfoyrep@gmail.com.

IN motion

By Liz Ely • Photos by Josh Moates / Kim Box Photography After practicing yoga for seven years and having it completely change her life, Amber Jernigan decided to leave behind the hectic pace of working in real estate to focus on something deeper, more spiritual, and on September 4, 2017, she opened Bombshell Buddha, a yoga studio labeled as a “sacred space for women.” Her classes work to heal the mind, body and spirit, not only for women, but also for young girls through weekly Kids Yoga classes. She wants women to feel united and supported through the power of yoga, feel the transformative effects yoga has to restore energy, balance and love. Her journey began during a time when days, nights and weekends were consumed with phone calls and appointments, and she wanted to return to a place where she felt centered, at peace. “I tossed around the idea of getting certified for a couple of years, but in March, I really committed to it, and the Capital City Club immediately asked me to lead a class,” Jernigan said “It felt like the universe was winking at me. After I completed my training, I didn’t have any designs to open a studio, I only wanted to come back to Montgomery and teach, but I have a small-business mindset from working in real estate, and one day, a friend phoned who let me know of an available space near her. 46

RSVP NOV / DEC 2017

It felt like God was placing me on my path, and I decided to take a leap and open my own studio. Everything was very serendipitous.” Through that leap of faith, Jernigan, used her unique background to create a space she notes will intensify the bonds between women through being in a space practicing together and sharing their struggles and victories– a space where only the sounds of your breath or peaceful music distract you. Her training, which has greatly equipped her for her new role, allows Montgomery’s women a place to join forces, to come back to a state of love and healing. A place where together, women can feel healthier and more whole. “I wanted to give people a unique space to practice and grow, but also to have a lot of fun!” Jernigan said. “I tell my students to absolutely go to other studios and to other teachers as well. We all give a different yoga experience to help you deepen your practice. Because I was trained through Yoga Trekking International with a certification in Prana

Flow Vinyasa, my studio is unique to this area. I offer a Kundalini class, meditation circles, Ashtanga and will soon offer prenatal yoga. I also incorporate children’s yoga weekly, we have a Lunar Yoga series, and I am certified in Reiki Energy Healing. The studio is a space where women can gain body confidence, self-awareness and leave behind their anxiety. It’s a healing place where we embrace the hour and don’t have to do anything else.” At Bombshell Buddha, you can’t help but feel at home. With a color scheme that is soft and feminine, bamboo flooring and bay windows that open to reveal just the right amount of light, it’s as if you’re seated somewhere far away, secluded from the daily duties that call out to you. Amber wants her classes to be an experience for the senses. And while men are welcome for certain classes, the mission of her yoga studio is to reinforce that positive energy that all women share. For those new to yoga, she is glad to be a new face to introduce a different form of exercise that can shape not only the body, but also the spirit.

The Pike Road New Home Community

“It really is a supportive group,” Jernigan said. “We do offer co-ed classes, but most of my classes personally are focused on women’s issues. Women can connect with their feminine energy. It’s based on what women need, and I wanted the studio to be the right place for all body types. I wanted it to be a positive space, an empowering place, and a place where women can come together and support one another. Yoga is about healing your spirit and your soul, and I’m excited to introduce people to this. For those already involved, I hope it continues to heal them.” There certainly is a hype to yoga, some of which doesn’t, in Jernigan’s eyes, get enough credit. But she’s seen the results. She’s seen how people can be affected through practicing yoga, and as Bombshell Buddha gains more clients, she notes the benefits of being in the studio has the potential to reform, even revolutionize lives. “I’ve had clients say that yoga with me has changed their lives, and for me personally, it absolutely has,” Jernigan said. My husband and I have four children. Life gets hectic for everyone, people sometimes don’t know how to handle the expectations on them. Yoga has taught me how to process those things we can’t control and to come at everything from a place of love and gratitude.”

Bombshell Buddha is located at 1067 Woodley Road. For more information, call 334.799.0620 or log on to www.bombshellbuddha.com or visit the studio’s Facebook page.

An Auburn graduate, Greyson attended South Alabama for medical school and did his residency at Baptist Radiology in Birmingham. He then completed a fellowship in interventional radiology at UAB. His parents supported and guided him by instilling the right work ethic from a very young age. He says, “I was shown how procrastination and failure to plan were detriments to my success. My parents showed me how to think long term and to see the whole picture and not just what was right in front of me.” This focus helped him block out the naysayers he encountered on his journey, and now he is able to improve people’s lives through his practice. Greyson truly loves going to work every day and finds it incredibly fulfilling, both personally and professionally, to be able to help a patient recover from chronic pain or other debilitating illness. Not surprisingly, her favorite hobby is to travel with watching Alabama football following behind.

don’t ask, doc tells

Bro•sectomy By Dr. Brian Richardson • Photo by Caleb Hawk Cool days, barbecues, corn hole, coolers and hanging out watching football are integral to a great tailgate party this time of year. I’m not sure there is a better bond created and strengthened amongst men than during football season. Guys love to gather together and reminisce of times of old, talk trash about their teams, and relive their glory days when they were younger, stronger and more vibrant. Wives and girlfriends are always welcome, but these afternoons and evenings are all about being bros! The Wall Street Journal recently reported on a new trend that is growing amongst us guys throughout the country. Imagine yourself lounging with your best buddies, perhaps enjoying a nice adult beverage, watching some sports on the TV, all while your urologist goes from room to room and gives you the ol’ snip snip! What a great idea! Hang out with your bros and get your vasectomy! The term “brosectomy” has now been born! You may not want to throw corn hole or stand too long near the grill, but you could

always get extra bags of frozen peas and toss them into the hole once you have finished icing your jewels. At some point in your life, you may come to the decision that you no longer wish to have children. Certainly, there are many options to achieve the goal of contraception or sterility. Many families must make the decision should the man or the woman undertake steps to achieve sterility? I have many friends who negotiate and bargain as to which of them should take that step. I’m sure a nice pair of Christian Louboutins have been purchased or maybe a Louis Vuitton purse showed up out of nowhere with a note proclaiming- you do it! Some guys will spend a lot of dollars to keep the doctor away from their precious family heirlooms. When I was a urology resident in New Orleans, my roommate and I loved to watch Family Guy on TV. I’ll never forget the episode when Peter learned about the vasectomy by having a group of barber shop singers pop in the room to explain

the procedure. Contrary to their catchy and informative song, you will not become half the man you are now. I often integrate humor during the course of performing a vasectomy in my office. Occasionally, I will ask my patients, “where would you like me to put your testicles when I am done?” I cannot tell you how many guys have spontaneously responded, “my wife keeps them in her purse!” Fortunately, your testicles will continue to reside both literally and figuratively in whatever location they inhabited prior to the vasectomy procedure. The procedure itself is quite simple. Over 95% of vasectomies are performed in the office under local anesthesia. The procedure lasts about 10 minutes and really should not be physically painful. The mental pain and anguish can be easily treated with some payback from the wives. I have no problem writing a prescription for guys weekends, favorite meals and of course many nights of love and devotion! I typically perform these procedures on Fridays and ask my patients to hang out on the couch over the weekend. The ultimate goal of the procedure is similar to some of your favorite fruit drinks, “all juice, no seed!” We do check for seeds at eight weeks

after the procedure and require two consecutive checks with no seeds to be considered sterile. By the way, the documented failure rate is one in 2,000. So, I would definitely recommend those follow-up checks to ensure the mission has been accomplished. One final thought, probably every urologist has encountered an awkward situation when it comes to sterility after a vasectomy, if they have been practicing long enough. Keep in mind, if a man has undergone a vasectomy and has no sperm present, it can be very difficult to explain how their partner has become pregnant. I do believe in the Immaculate Conception, but I believe it has only happened once in all of history!

Tucked away on Mulberry Street near Old Cloverdale is a little house with a brightly, multicolored painted awning. It’s not your typical storefront- which is fittingbecause Johnny Marvin’s Paint and Furniture is a truly unique place. Besides being Montgomery’s only stockist of the much sought-after Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® and supplies, it is the home away from home for a small group of artisans who unabashedly refer to Johnny Marvin’s as their “happy place.” It is there that owner Yancey Hutcheson and wife Jennifer, along with their talented team, create beautiful custom furniture for their clients. However, there are other reasons that Yancey’s customers refer to the store as “the best kept secret in Montgomery,” and it’s easy to see from the time you first step through the door of the screened-in porch filled with unique pieces of architectural Photos by Nick Drollette

salvage. The atmosphere inside the house is relaxing and inviting. Unpainted vintage furniture pieces are nestled side by side with completed pieces in captivating and distinctive finishes. A wide variety of décor and accessories adorn the walls and accentuate details of the furniture. Customers are warmly greeted by either Yancey himself or Shauna Montgomery, one of his principal artisans, who encourages them to wander through the house and take in all the treasures within. One of the rooms is reserved for the display of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® products and supplies along with waxes, stains, stencils, milk paint and other items that would appeal to any aspiring painter. An assortment of brushes, decorative vintage stamps and stencils, décor moulds and transfers are some of the easy-to-use, professional-quality products available. Samples of various finishes and color combinations are at customers’ fingertips. It’s the starting point for anyone interested in beginning his or her own project or placing a custom order. Yancey and Shauna pride themselves on providing hands-on customer service. Many clients say that another room- the store’s work area and classroom, where they are treated to one-on-one assistance in choosing colors and finishes and even are encouraged to practice painting techniques before making a purchase- is what makes Johnny Marvin’s a standout among other stores of its kind. Shauna knows that she and Yancey are making a difference in their customers’ lives. “ We get to know people on a firstname basis when they come in,” she explains. “We know what project they just finished, we want to see pictures of what they have done or want to do. We are just as inspired by their work and creativity as they are by us.”

Make a visit to the little house at 1914 Mulberry Street, take in the beauty and magic there, and allow yourself to be inspired.

In that same room, Shauna and fellow artisan Rachel Loflin regularly host both beginner and advanced paint classes. Classes are kept small to allow for oneon-one attention. Techniques such as proper waxing, creating and applying decorative mouldings, creating aged-crackled finishes and other specialty faux finishes are taught. Students leave with a newfound confidence in their ability to complete their own projects. “We’re told that you can’t make a mistake with chalk paint,” laughs Elisabeth Gardner, “ and after taking the Basic 101 class, I’m convinced!” Johnny Marvin’s Paint and Furniture recently joined the local Chamber of Commerce, and more big things are in store for the shop. Look for their new location in Pike Road, opening in early 2018, and a possible third location in the River Region by the end of next year. Yancey and his team are looking forward to serving a larger client base as the business grows. NOV / DEC 2017 RSVP 61

Baked In Cloverdale By Angela Hardgrave • Photos by Megan Florence Face it—change can make us uncomfortable in most circumstances. New jobs, moving to a different city, or children leaving for college can leave us feeling a little lost. But, when that change involves our favorite restaurant, we become passionate defenders of the status quo. There are times, however, when change takes something great and makes it even better, which is the case for the recent move of Café Louisa and Tomatinos Pizza & Bake Shop to Cloverdale Road in the historic district of Old Cloverdale in Montgomery. Husband and wife owners Missy and Browne Mercer did not take the decision to move their restaurants lightly. There were many pros and cons throughout the process that had to be considered, but the two most important considerations were the customers and their own family. “Our main factor in moving was that the bakery at Woodley needed to be consolidated into Café Louisa to better manage it and get products to customers quicker. The move also provides a long-term stability,” said Missy. “Relocating was the best decision for our family,” added Browne.

They are both happy about the move, even with the inevitable bumps along the way. Their regular customers followed them, and they have gained even more new customers. Some of their loyal patrons were skeptical that it wouldn’t feel the same after the move. Missy said, “We paid attention to the aesthetic to make sure that it felt familiar. We also added more staff to better serve people. So far, we haven’t heard anything negative.” The Mercers want each experience in their restaurants to be amazing for their customers. “We want people to know that we are ingredient people. We are super consistent and always use the same quality ingredients. We would rather change a vendor over changing to a different ingredient, especially one that might be lower quality. We have ridden the wave of price changes to keep everything the same,” said Missy. The Mercers are excited to still be doing what they love. “Café Louisa and Tomatinos are the perfect fit for us. I like to be in the kitchen with my people and work hard. I’m from an Italian family, so I love to bake and cook and serve people, and that’s what we’re about. We work to make everyone happy, and we just want to get the word out that we’ve moved. Come and check us out!” said Missy.

Café Louisa The Mercers have owned Café Louisa since 2004. The cafe and sandwich shop specializes in organic fair trade coffee, sandwiches, freshly made soups and baked goods. They bake their organic bread in house daily and use only the finest ingredients. Café Louisa even has a barista ready to whip up a smoothie or espresso shake from scratch. From bagels with veggies or smoked salmon, quiche, and organic yogurt and granola for breakfast to grilled turkey or portobello sandwiches, salads, and desserts for lunch, customers love the fact that there are so many delicious and healthy options with no preservatives. They also offer breakfast and lunch catering options, such as a muffin or biscuit platter, a fruit platter, box lunches or salad boxes. “Since moving Café Louisa, we have been able to add more seating to better serve customers. There is also more light, adding to the openness of the space. It has the same feel, but better,” said Missy. When asked about any possible changes for the future, Missy said, “We are thinking of the possibility of adding a bread of the week and a sandwich of the week to keep options interesting for our customers.” Café Louisa is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Tomatinos Pizza & Bake Shop Tomatinos, established in 1995, has had a singular focus, which is “to serve the best pizza with the highest quality ingredients in a funky, eclectic atmosphere.” When Missy and Browne Mercer purchased the restaurant in 2004, they worked hard to live up to that focus—and have succeeded for the past 13 years. They make “fresh, wholesome pizza with local organic or better quality ingredients than the competition.” Tomatinos’ menu includes familiar pizza offerings such as Margherita, Supreme and Vegetarian, but also boasts specialties like a Funky Chicken Pizza, a Sicilian pizza with meatballs, caramelized onions and Alabama goat cheese, and the Bianca, a white pizza topped with Canadian bacon, red onion, garlic, mushrooms and sundried tomatoes. Customers can also enjoy a selection of salads, breadsticks, focaccia and calzones.

ability to add to the menu. Like I said, I grew up in an Italian family, and we had the tradition of Sunday dinner. My friends in college always wanted to come to Sunday dinner at my house. They couldn’t believe the amount of food! We have considered adding that to our menu in the future.”

Since the move, the Mercers have added two more pizza ovens than they had in their previous location. Missy said, “With an expanded kitchen, we have more of an

The Montgomery Mustache Run made its debut on September 23 in downtown Montgomery thanks to organizer Brian Richardson and the Jackson Hospital Foundation. Over 250 runners, many sporting unique mustaches, lined up to help raise awareness of the importance of men’s health. The mustache creativity was on point, and while there were only three prizes given for best male, best female and best all round, there were several honorable mentions. Over $10,000 dollars was raised, which will help to expand medical services and facilities on the hospital campus.

Guests enjoyed beautifully appointed artwork and decorations at every turn. From the 9-foot backdrop painting from New Orleans artist Ashley Longshore’s “Audrey” series, to the 5-feet-by-6-feet painting titled “Hail Mary” by artist Megan Coonelly greeting guests on the grand staircase, art was everywhere. Guests entered the ballroom through a large gold frame made with ornate crown moulding. Several paintings commissioned by the Queen from Elizabeth Hawke adorned the centerpiece of the backstage buffet table for members and guests alike to admire. Carol Barksdale, an accomplished local artist, painted live as the ball was underway. Wearing a gorgeous royal blue ball gown, the Queen accessorized with a tiara and a crown pin which had been worn by previous queens before her. Guests danced in the ballroom to the tunes of Fountain City Players, and Brendan Crimi played on the outside patio. As a token of appreciation from the Queen, she presented each of her board members with a unique piece of artwork. In gratitude for a wonderful year and for hosting the 2017 Merrie Mimics ball, the membership of Merrie Mimics presented the Queen with a painting by local artist Elizabeth Hawke, whose works were featured prominently at the ball.

he Montgomery Area Nontraditional Equestrian (MANE) hosted its annual “Raise the Roof” seafood celebration in the Poarch Creek Arena on October 19. Over 300 advocates came to support and toast MANE, where horses change lives. Since 1994, MANE has been providing equine-assisted intervention for River Region children and adults who have physical, developmental, cognitive and emotional disabilities. Dedicated volunteers and staff,

Wintzell’s Oyster House’s fabulous seafood, great vibes by The Whiskey River Band, and overwhelming community attendance made the evening delightful and memorable. Guests, who parked along MANE’s sensory integration trail, were transported on flatbed trailers filled with hay and pulled by tractors for a short ride to the event entrance. The Whiskey River Band’s upbeat country music and the delicious aroma of the grilled oysters enticed guests into the arena. Wintzell’s Oyster House prepared a fresh feast including an array of oysters, fish, chicken, shrimp, coleslaw, cheese grits and their award-winning gumbo. Back in the barn area, certified therapeutic riding instructors introduced MANE’s fifteen extraordinary equine partners to the party-goers, who could sponsor the horses and the riders for the year. or years, the Harlequins Ball has been one of Montgomery’s most highly-anticipated social events of the season. This year’s ball certainly did not disappoint as the Harlequins krewe, their guests and a beautiful group of debutantes let the good times roll to the sounds of Yacht Rock Schooner into the early morning hours. Presiding over the festivities was the King of Harlequins and his Queen, Miss Anne Sellers Pierce, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Mark Pierce. Miss Pierce was escorted by Mr. William Clark Sahlie. Sellers is a student at the University of Alabama, majoring in professional and public writing. Sarah Spratling once again displayed her expertise in decorating and directing the ball, as well as decorating and providing the beautiful floral arrangements for the ballroom. The Queen of Harlequins greeted her guests wearing an empire gown, designed and created by Mystick Couturier, of cream duchess satin featuring a gold lace bodice and a full chapel length train. Her ensemble was complete with a large collar of gold lace and Swarovski crystals. Queen Sellers also wore the Harlequin train of whitefur-edged red velvet, embellished with a silver sequined fleur de lis. Keeping with tradition, many wonderful gifts were exchanged among the king, queen, debutantes, krewe and their families. Each debutante received beautiful monogrammed Reed & Barton Alabama julep cups. To cap off a magical evening, a breakfast hosted by the queen’s parents was held on the Bluestone patio at the Montgomery Country Club immediately after the ball. Those attending enjoyed perfect weather, a delicious breakfast buffet and mimosas.
