ummer has kicked into full gear and although it has been a hot one, it doesn’t seem to be stopping us from spending time outside in our gardens, kayaks, farmers markets and ball fields. If you look back at some of your past summers with regret over things you missed--the trips, the concerts and the people you never got to know - we hope this issue will remind you that every opportunity missed can be pursued again. RSVP is all about connecting you with people and places that are worth knowing. Be sure to check out the individuals featured in this issue who provide energy, culture and music to make our city even richer. One of our new favorite sections is Socially Seen, which recap some of Montgomery’s awesome events. We hope seeing these events will encourage you to check out our calendar and start getting involved in all Montgomery has to offer. For those of you who might know someone going through a difficult family crisis or someone struggling with depression, please make sure they get a copy of this issue and read about Hope City Counseling. The hearts behind this organization are so pure and genuine, and they are already making a difference in many lives. Last but not least, we are thrilled to be featuring Disney’s Beauty and The Beast that will be performed at Alabama Shakespeare Festival this month. What an amazing theatre we have right here in our city! If you didn’t get tickets, check out the upcoming season and book early. Charlotte’s Web, Because of Winn-Dixie and Sherlock Holmes are just a few of the productions on the upcoming schedule!

Summer Sun STAPLES By Shelby Traff Photos by Brooke Glassford/Colorbox Photographers There’s nothing better than a sunny day at the pool, lake or beach, and packing the right items is an important step to ensure your day is relaxing and perfect. There are always new products coming out that make summer adventures just a little bit more exciting, so we’ve rounded up some of our favorite summer sun staples that will ensure you make the most of your day!
Royal Standard Beach Tote
Beach bags are like swimsuits…you want to show off a new one every year! Lightweight and affordable, these totes come in a variety of sizes and patterns. The one that caught our attention is this solid jute-cotton blend accented with a bold metallic print. This tote comes in a variety of patterns so you can pick the one perfect for your personality! $25, available at Southern Homes and Gardens, 8820 Vaughn Road
Swell Bottle
Looking for a fashion upgrade to the Yeti cup? Swell bottles are the answer. Available in dozens of colors, patterns and sizes, and easy to customize with a monogram, it’s no wonder these have become one of the most popular water bottles in 35 countries. Composed of non-toxic stainless steel, your drink will stay cold for 24 hours or hot for 12. Available in 9 oz., 17 oz. and 25 oz., and we just discovered the 25 oz. swell bottle holds an entire bottle of wine! Now that’s a Sunday fun day! $25 - $45, available at Southern Homes and Gardens, 8820 Vaughn Road
ECOXPRO Waterproof Case
This might be one of our favorite “must haves” for the summer! We spend way too much money on our devices to not protect them around water and sand. From iPods to BlackBerrys to the latest Android handset, no gadget will go unprotected in this rugged, waterproof case, which doubles as a speaker. Stick your device into the ECOXPRO’s internal mesh pocket (which can also hold credit cards, keys and lip balm), then plug it into the standard audio jack with a standard audio cable and close the case. Now you’re ready to blast your tunes across the beach or even out on the water, since this device floats for up to 30 hours on a single charge. Now that’s cool. $68, www.ecoxgear.com
Bumble and bumble Surf Spray
Beach hair doesn’t have to come with a side of sand. This salt-infused spray offers body and a tousled texture that’ll fool everyone into thinking you just came back from an island getaway. You’ll get that sun-dried look without the damage, thanks to moisture-packed ingredients like seaweed and kelp extract. This styling spray adds volume and texture to the hair to create a sexy, windblown feel; so while Bumble and bumble hasn’t exactly bottled the real thing, they’ve replicated and improved it. $27, available at Doug’s 2, 8131 Vaughn Road
The Royal Standard Towels
When we picked this up, we couldn’t believe it was a towel. The Royal Standard Microfiber Beach Towels are super absorbent, thin and lightweight. Ideal for the beach because, while it is still a full-size beach towel, it takes up very little space in your beach bag. The sand shakes off with one quick shake, and they dry extremely fast. One woman was purchasing several for a mission trip as she said she can pack four or five in the amount of space one regular towel takes. Available in several patterns and with a section for monogramming, this makes a great gift! $22, available at Tucker Pecan, 350 N. McDonough Street
Ray-Ban Remix Project
Ray-Bans have stood the test of time and are always a stylish choice. They now have a remix project similar to a creative musical mash-up that allows you to take any of RayBan’s eight models and then customize the color and finish of the frames (both the front and the temple arms) as well as the type and color of the lenses. You can even stick a personalized text engraving on the side of the frames. Make your’s online, then look for your custom shades to arrive at your front door within a week. $175–$200, www.ray-ban.com/usa/customize

By: Angela Hardgrave Photos by Brooke Glassford / Colorbox Photographers Pain and suffering are inevitable. Broken relationships, illness or even the death of a loved one can all fall into your life without warning. How you deal with the pain and finally emerge from it can change the course of your future. Two couples in the River Region want to make sure that families and individuals have somewhere to turn when the pain is more than they can handle alone, offering them hope, healing and an empathy that can only be born out of personally being acquainted with grief.
Richard and Alisa Jones— Hope City Counseling When Richard and Alisa Jones first considered their future together, counseling was not a part of it. Both graduated from Auburn University—Richard with a degree in building science and Alisa in human development in family studies. Alisa said, “I knew I loved people and desired to walk alongside them in some capacity.” Her love of people led to several years in youth ministry at Trinity Presbyterian Church. “Throughout my four years of working with adolescents, I began to sense the need for further education in order to help in a deeper way. I remember telling Richard that I would like to get my master’s degree in counseling. He was incredibly supportive, and the rest is history!” said Alisa. Richard decided to pursue a counseling degree as well. They moved to Orlando to attend Reformed Theological Seminary but always knew they would return to Montgomery. Alisa said, “We felt that there was a great need for counseling in Montgomery, and we wanted to be a part of meeting that need. Hope City was birthed out of our desire to offer HOPE and healing by offering grace-centered Christian counseling. We feel too many people are left dealing with the struggles of their life alone. We wanted to offer a nonjudgmental environment where people can begin to process through the stories of their lives in a safe and confidential setting.”
Richard and Alisa know there are unique challenges facing young people everywhere, including in the River Region. Expectations, both internal and external, can cause unbelievable pressure and anxiety. Alisa said, “The pressure is undeniable! Pressure to excel, to perform, to fit in, to do the right thing. There seems to be a perception about young people that they don’t care about anything other than social media. This isn’t true. Often the presenting behavior of apathy is driven by their perceived inadequate efforts to live up to expectations.” She went on to explain that these perceptions lead to an exhausting way of life— acting one way on the outside and feeling completely differently inside—resulting in self-hatred and depression. The counselors at Hope City love that they are able to combat some of the pain and brokenness of the people that come to their center. Alisa said, “We believe humans were created for relationships. Our counselors desire to welcome you and invite you into a therapeutic relationship where God can begin to shed light upon your life. You matter and the story of your life is significant!” Hope City Counseling serves under the supervision of Jay Lloyd, MA, LPC-S.

Mike and Rebecca Ellis— The Cole Ellis Foundation In 2009, the Ellis family was living an incredible life. Rebecca and Mike Ellis had three children, Mike was about to open his own business and Rebecca was working part time as a registered nurse. Rebecca said, “We considered it pretty perfect, especially in regards to what culture is communicating to families and teens today. We were very involved in our church, school, sports and spending lots of family time together. Our children were our priority, and we were extremely focused on teaching, guiding and correcting them as they navigated the challenges of middle school and high school.” Then, on October 26, 2009, the unthinkable happened. Rebecca and Mike’s son, Cole, took his own life. “Our story of the specifics of Cole’s death would be difficult to put into this article, but the story of our incredible Cole is the reason we established the Cole Ellis Foundation. Cole was an incredible young man that lived a lot of life in a very short time. He was smart, wise, intense, genuine, kind, athletic, loyal and a leader on and off the field. He was a perfectionist and very sensitive to letting others down. Above everything, he was a Christian,” said Rebecca. When Mike and Rebecca were left to pick up the pieces after Cole’s death, they wanted to reach out to other teens and
their families. That is exactly what they do through Cole’s Foundation. “Young people face challenges that we as adults have absolutely no concept of. The internal struggle and conflicts are overwhelming, and the consequences of their choices are at levels that adults are missing. Everything today is based on instant gratification. They have messages bombarding them 24/7. No matter how hard we try as parents to monitor the information coming into our children’s lives, there is no way to protect them from all of it,” Rebecca said. She also went on to explain that through Cole’s Foundation, they provide a listening ear to struggling teens and their families and also come alongside families who are grieving the loss of a child. They show families that you can’t let the devastation of loss destroy you, but instead should allow God to pick up the broken pieces and use them for good. She said, “I know Cole would be proud of his momma and daddy! He was always encouraging others to be strong and courageous! He forgot for a moment, so, as his parents, it’s our job to pick up the ball and run with it!”
Hope City Counseling and Cole’s Foundation—Coming Together With both families having a similar desire to help families, it’s no surprise they found each other and began working together toward their common goals. Alisa Jones said, “The Ellises have an incredible passion for the health and well-being of individuals. They share our vision for Montgomery to have excellent care for its citizens. When we were preparing for our move back home, we began hearing about a couple who sensed the need for counseling in the area. We met with them for the first time in March of 2015, and a unique partnership was formed. It is an incredible honor for us to play a part in Cole’s legacy as we seek to be a resource for adolescents and adults struggling with mental illness or just the everyday pressures of life.” Rebecca Ellis added, “After much prayer and discussion, we knew that Richard and Alisa could offer something that Montgomery desperately needed. They have their private practice with Cole’s Foundation partnering with them. We look forward to the growth, services, outreach and education that Hope City will provide, not just for our community, but surrounding areas.” If you or someone you love needs help, or if you would like to support either of these great organizations, they would be glad to hear from you. THE ALABAMA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL PRESENTS:
30
RSVP JULY / AUGUST 2016
Be Our Guest By Liz Ely Vinson
It’s no secret that Disney musicals are loved far and wide, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival is no stranger to bringing Disney to the River Region. Devoted fans have come out in droves to see ASF bring to life some of Disney’s most timeless and enchanting stories that captivate and ignite the imagination of all ages. Perhaps the attraction lies in being transported into a land of pure fantasy, or perhaps we simply like going on a magical journey to places that only exist in dreams. In the world of Disney, anything is possible, and we get to tag along with the heroes and heroines who dance across the stage to some of our favorite melodies. Above all, one thing is certain – the allure of Disney is real, and its appeal is unmatched. ASF took note of Disney’s charm ten years ago when it first premiered Beauty and the Beast, and performances are once again in full swing on the Festival stage starting July 8. Geoffrey Sherman, who serves as ASF’s producing artistic director, will direct the production, and he hopes to up the ante from what was done a decade ago.
“I think this production will be better than the one we did ten years ago. We learned a lot from the first time about how to make it better, and this company is pretty extraordinary,” Sherman said. To capture the magic of this production, Sherman has cast a slew of veteran performers from ASF and New York City and brought on board Alex Sanchez as choreographer. Sanchez has a list of Broadway credits under his belt – something that Sherman feels confident will set off the performance. “The cast is brilliant as is the choreography,” Sherman said. “Alex takes his time to work his way through the motivation of each move in a storytelling sense, and he infiltrates an extraordinary heart within his dance. We speak the same language, and we try to put real people out there.” From dancing cutlery and dancing plates in “Be Our Guest,” to performances by actors who have a repertoire of unforgettable roles in previous productions, Sherman hopes that Beauty and the Beast will be a feast for the eyes and ears.
“Hopefully, all of it will draw people in. The show never stops moving, and we get to play around with a lot of things. Because people in musical theatre are extremely good at what they do, it makes their work far more threedimensional,” Sherman said. Sherman also notes that the story of Belle and the Beast stands out as truly unique due to Disney’s impeccable narrative. While viewers know the outcome of the story, watching the characters navigate their romance leaves a lasting impact for audience members – a testament to the enduring wonder of Disney musicals. “The reason Disney productions work so well is because they are so beautifully crafted,” Sherman said. “It’s a pleasure to come across material that is so well put together, and Beauty and the Beast gives us one of the first heroines with strength. Belle has real gumption, and she wins the hand of the enchanted prince without having to compromise everything she holds sacred. That’s why it’s fun, and audiences love it. You know it will work out, and that’s what makes the storytelling such a delight.” Upon first bringing Beauty and the Beast to the city, Sherman was unaware it would have the impact it did. Not only has it brought the theater more revenue and traffic, but Shakespeare theaters across the country are now producing Disney productions since ASF first began setting the trend ten years ago. “Most American companies hadn’t done Disney until after we first produced Beauty and the Beast. I don’t think anybody thought that classical theatre should produce Disney, but these scripts are really good. They’re very good productions without all the bells and whistles, and the lyrics to the songs are extraordinary,” Sherman said. Along with Beauty and the Beast, thousands have flocked to ASF to enjoy adaptations of Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid. These additions have allowed the theater to thrive financially and increased ticket sales for other productions. “The Disney musical is becoming more of a classic faster than anybody would’ve expected. Bringing Disney to ASF allows us to tell people to come back and see Shakespeare. That’s really important, because it’s why we’re here.” There is something to be said for the undeniable pull of Disney – it brings together families and transcends generations. As for Beauty and the Beast, Sherman hopes audiences come out for a show sure to please. Performances are scheduled through July 24. For more information or to reserve tickets, visit www.asf.net or call 334.271.5353.
“It’s very special, and we enjoy doing Disney. There are a lot of little interesting secrets, and no matter what your age, there is something in it for everybody,” Sherman said.

RIVER DAN
By Jessica Klinner • Photos by Beth Childs
I
f you close your eyes and listen to River Dan, you might mistake him for Waylon Jennings. He’s got a deep, Southern voice that is reminiscent of old time country music. A native of Montgomery, Alabama, River Dan is no stranger to the country music history in our city and has let it infiltrate his life and his music. From every chord he strikes and every note he hits, this musician embodies the soul of the South. If you’re looking to have a good time while listening to music, find out where River Dan is playing and let his charm and Southern drawl rock you sweetly into the night.
Tell us a bit about how you got started as River Dan. River Dan is just a nickname from high school. Catchy enough, I stuck with it.

Has being a musician always been your dream? When did you first realize it’s something you wanted to pursue? I had always wanted to learn to play banjo. My dad got me one when I was fifteen so I taught myself. Eventually, I wanted to sing so I got an acoustic [guitar] and started playing and singing. After traveling all over the country playing along the way, I figured that music was something I could make a living at. After working a job and playing on the side for a while, I decided to quit my job and make music my full time endeavor. It’s a beautiful thing when you love how you make a living. Everyday is like a dream.
What or who has been the most influential on your music career and why? Hands down, Waylon Jennings. I never would have
known I could sing baritone. I started out singing and playing traditional bluegrass. The first time I sang “Luckenbach Texas,” I knew that was my path. And there isn’t a song that he sang that I didn’t care for, each song more beautiful than the next.
You’re working on an album. How is that coming along and what can people expect from the release? We have been working on the album over a year now. Taking our time and making sure we create a great record, a record we love. My good friend and manager, Davis Nix, and myself produced the record together. I believe we have a solid album and cannot wait for fans to get a copy. We are hoping for a release in August of this year. The album will be titled “Substance Abuse and A Woman On the Loose.”
Where do you gather inspiration for your songs? My life and the people in it. That’s all you need. It’s not hard when you have the time of your life everyday and surround yourself with great, creative people. Big thanks to all my friends and family.
part about performing in the River Region? Any favorite spots? I do enjoy playing in Montgomery. I don’t have a particular favorite spot to play, but I do enjoy seeing friends and family at shows and always enjoy meeting new folks. I would answer the FloraBama if we were to talk about performing and being on the road.
For those who have never seen you perform, how would you describe your sets? Mostly traditional country. I think they are calling it Ameripolitan these days - a bit of Honky Tonk, Outlaw and Texas Swing. I am also a songwriter during the day and will throw in a handful of my own tunes during a set.
Where can people check out your music? Facebook, iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and RiverDanMusic.com
It looks like you’ve got a pretty packed show schedule. What’s your favorite

e’ve all been there…you walk into a crowded bar ready for a fun night with friends until you come across some jerk who doesn’t have common sense. Unfortunately, some people have not been taught how to properly act in a crowded bar or club scene. Make sure you’re not one of them by following these tips for bar etiquette. Try them next time you’re out and see how much better of a time you have. Happy drinking!

RSVP JULY / AUGUST 2016
1.
It only takes one person to buy rounds Why crowd the bar even more with your whole group when each of you can buy different rounds. The tab can be settled later, but if it doesn’t, then it’s time to get new drinking friends.
2.
Don’t ask what’s on tap Your eyes are meant to see, duh. Put them to use, and you will see the beer on tap right in front of you. I know, sometimes you can’t see the taps, so just ask for the beer menu to save the bartenders and other guests’ time.
3.
Tip more than you should Can we get a round of applause for the bartenders and servers out there? They have to put up with a lot of unnecessary fools, so remember the golden rule when you are closing out, treat others the way you would want to be treated.
4.
Know what you are going to order and don’t make it complicated Let’s face it, the majority of the time you order the same thing at the bar. But if you are feeling crazy and want something different, drink your “old” drink first while deciding what new, enticing drink you want to try out. Out with the old, in with the new right?
5.
Bars aren’t soundproof I know once you’ve had a few drinks, you want to tell your friends what happened to you last night. But, unless you want the bartenders knowing what crazy nonsense you’ve been up to, then just keep your dirty little secrets to yourself. What happens at the bar doesn’t necessarily stay at the bar.
Did You Know? The national anthem of United States, “The Star Spangled Banner,” was written to the tune of a drinking song. The pressure in a champagne bottle is 90 pounds per square inch, that is three times the pressure in automobile tires. Matthew McConaughey has a nephew named “Miller Lyte". The world’s oldest known recipe is for beer.

TAYLOR HARDY The Montgomery restaurant and hospitality scene is nothing new to the general manger of A & P Social, Taylor Hardy. Previously, Taylor has worked at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center, a front house manager at Central 129 Coosa, and as food and beverage manager of Perdido Beach Resort. Being a Montgomery native has helped Taylor understand the beautiful personality and identity that his hometown has to offer his career. The main obstacle Taylor has had to overcome in his industry is his age, which has helped him learn a lot about himself and his ability to manage people through loyalty and respect. But he owes his success to Municipal Judge Jim McLaughlin of Auburn, who taught him the poise and professionalism that it takes to be successful. One of his favorite things about his job is the one-on-one engagement with people. He says, “The most worthwhile experience is the personal connections and conversations you have with random individuals that connect your world to theirs.” Taylor’s life is enriched by his 4-year-old golden retriever named Shadow, and he is one reason Taylor enjoys being involved with anything that will help better the Montgomery community, specifically the Humane Society and Helping Shepherds of Every Color Rescue.

ROCKY PRINCE Rocky Prince is no stranger to the culinary world. After many years of traveling from Alabama to California then back to Alabama working for various top notch restaurants, Rocky is now the executive chef at Wind Creek Casino’s Itta Bena. He took a chance on a small French bistro, 3,000 miles away from everything he knew, which turned out to be one of the best moves of his career. He says, “Being an executive sous chef at such a young age, garnering the respect of a diverse kitchen staff was a huge obstacle, but taught me how to earn their respect by respecting them.” Rocky thanks Jill Bosich and Craig Peterson for contributing to the success of his career by giving him a world of education that far surpassed his culinary school experiences. Montgomery’s community has given Rocky the chance to showcase his talents while giving back to the community by participating in charity events like Culinary Caper, Chili Cook Off, Burger Bash, and Cajun Cook Off. In his spare time, Rocky enjoys skydiving, making specialty themed cakes and preparing meals for the Ronald McDonald House of Birmingham.

As a single mom, Nicole knew reaching her goals and becoming successful wouldn’t happen by itself. She says, “I grabbed the bull by the horns and pushed myself into a mode of ‘GO TIME’ to ensure success and my family’s happiness.” Nicole loves creating the space for a client to make it their own and accessible to those who think they can’t afford a designer. Without the strong relationships with her clients, Nicole wouldn’t have had the continuous networking opportunities that have helped promote her business and stay successful. Her two children, Robert Taylor and Marlee Elizabeth ,are the absolute center of her universe.
PATRICK CROSS The first time the team at RSVP heard Patrick Cross perform, he instantly became a go-to musician for events.Talented, charming and humble, it’s easy to see how Patrick brings life to a room at the first strum of his guitar. Growing up in a house with musician parents, it was easy to see the apple wouldn’t fall far from the tree. One of the best parts of his music career is when fans make connections with Patrick through his songs. He says, “The most rewarding moment is when someone stops me and says how much a song means to them. It is cool knowing people can relate to what I am saying in a song.” However, the spotlight is nothing new to Patrick, he played in Tim Burton’s Big Fish as the little kid on the airplane making puppet shadows. Now you can catch this likable longhaired singer around town playing at various venues with a set list for music lovers of all kinds.

When Payton Traff signed to play volleyball with McHenry Community College in Illinois 700 miles away from home, it seemed appropriate to throw a “Road Trip” themed senior send-off party. Two of her favorite places are the Florida beaches and Austin, Texas, and of course you can’t get to Illinois without passing through Missouri. About 30 of Payton’s closest friends showed up and took the road trip journey to these four states. Florida was decorated with a tiki bar, sand, shells, beach balls and a signature blue drink with floating Swedish fish, tiki fruit skewers and mini cheeseburgers in paradise. Moving on to Austin, this section was full of reminders of their famous landmarks, including South By Southwest and Austin City Limits music festival signs, cactus centerpieces and the famous “I love you so much” wall that many take pictures in front of on South Congress Street. Hosts provided barbecue tacos and mock-aritas while party goes threw rings to hook a cow horn skull for prizes. Moving on to the Missouri County Fair, the popcorn, Nancy’s Italian Ice and cotton candy were a hit. Eager to win prizes that consisted of gift cards, hair and makeup products, jewelry and more, the girls were fishing in the duck pond and throwing darts at balloons. Kim Hall with Kreative Moments designed with the balloon decor. The last stop, where Payton will be moving in July, was Chicago, Illinois. The cityscape backdrop set the tone, but the smell of the Chicagostyle hotdogs provided by That’s My Dog made one wonder if they had actually arrived in the windy city. Peanuts, Cracker Jacks and root beer were available to snack on while girls pitched Chicago Cubs baseballs. The biggest hit was the Memories in Motion photo booth bus filled with fun props for the girls to pose together one last time. Good luck, Payton!

The Montgomery Bridge Club’s Heart of Dixie Tournament 2016 Photos by Brooke Glassford
Over the course of the four-day tournament, guests worked up quite an appetite and thankfully were met with a wonderful selection of kale chicken salad, fruit and cookies from Jennie Weller Catering and Events and petit fours, iced cookies, brownies and cheese straws from Liger’s Bakery. The bakery truly went above and beyond to accommodate the theme of the tournament with Alabama-shaped cookies and a heart marking Montgomery and cookies shaped like hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades to commemorate the MBC’s 56th anniversary. In addition, Buffalo Rock Pepsi generously provided beverages all weekend.
Bridge players from all over the Southeast flocked to the Wynona Wilson Building in historic downtown Montgomery on April 28 through May 1 to participate in the Montgomery Bridge Club’s Heart of Dixie Tournament. Benefiting the Family Sunshine Center, an organization working to end family violence and sexual assault by fostering hope and healing through crisis intervention, advocacy and community education. The 56th annual tournament was a huge success with the incredible support of many local sponsors. The Montgomery Bridge Club is a nonprofit bridge club sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League. For more than 40 years, the club was housed on Mulberry St. and just last year relocated to a beautiful building at 1103 S. Perry St. across from the governor’s mansion. On April 28, 2015, the building was named the Wynona Wilson Building dedicated to and named after the devoted club member of the same name. Tournament attendees included guests from as far as Little Rock, Arkansas, Vancleave, Missouri, and six cities in Georgia, five cities in sunny Florida, as well as 28 cities in Alabama from Huntsville all the way down to the gulf coast of Mobile. Many guests commented on how the Heart of Dixie tournament is the bestkept secret of the Southeast’s sectional tournaments. While the tournament was tons of fun for guests, the competition was stiff with five national championship winners present. 58

To add a touch of color to the room, a beautifully elegant flower arrangement by Melissa Kendall of pink larkspur, green and raspberry hydrangeas, and tangerine and hot pink garden roses sat in the middle of the buffet table, making guests stop and admire as they filled their plates. The tournament’s success is due to the sponsors and the staff, which worked tirelessly to ensure the guests felt welcome and comfortable the entire weekend. From Directors Joel Haygood and Clay Hall to Chairman Linda Hendrix and beyond, the tournament would not have seen near the success without their hard work and dedication. The Montgomery Bridge Club cannot begin to thank their sponsors enough for the support. For more information about the Montgomery Bridge Club, call them at 334.416.8014. The Shoppes at EastChase has always been pet friendly, but to make it official, they designed a day for the dogs with their first Fido Fest on May 7. Hundreds of people came out with their pups for activities for all. Food vendors included Wind Creek, Zoes, On a Roll Food Truck, That’s My Dog, Firebirds, Urban Pops and Liger’s Bakery for the hungry humans. Blackfinn Ameripub served bloody marys and Back Forty held a beer tasting. For the dogs, organic treats and cute accessories were available at The Barkery. Other vendors included Alabama Sweet Tea Company and Prissy Paws. Live music was provided by Federal Expression, Blue Yonder, the Good Doctor, John Bull, and Clinton Babers. Children enjoyed inflatables and face painting while pets cooled off at the K-9 splash zone, lounged on astro turf and played with toys in the swimming pools. Proceeds benefited the Montgomery Humane Society, which was on site with an adoption booth. It was a “paw-fect” day for all! Photos by Bryan Carter / Carter Photography & Design

Vintage Year has quite a history in Old Cloverdale’s entertainment district. With the exception of closing for a short season, it has been serving customers since 1984. New owners Derk Lyerly and Jud Blount made headlines when they reopened in January of this year. Their brunch menu definitely reflects the culinary skills of Chef Frederick Henderson. Whether you want the traditional egg brunch, something sweet and savory like French toast or waffles, or you are craving something full of flavor with pork, chicken or fish, there is something to please everyone’s palate. Check out Yelp or Open Table reviews and you will see why so many are raving about Vintage Year. Everything from the food, service, presentation, hospitality, music, ambience and bar service are all worthy of praise. Don’t miss the house-made pickled vegetables at the bloody mary bar during your next brunch.

Also located in Old Cloverdale’s entertainment district, The A&P Social is another favorite hot spot offering New Southern cuisine. Sip on bottomless mimosas, listen to monthly live music or enjoy their made-from-scratch bloody marys. Menu offerings includeherbed goat cheese waffles, sweet potato hash, biscuits and home fries, and their infamous burger. Our go-to is always the fried green tomatoes with mozzarella cheese and strawberries. We also love the shrimp and grits with andouille sausage. A&P is known for being locally responsible by using local farm-inspired ingredients. They are also known for their bycatch program, which is a program that turns lesser-known species of fish into beautiful and delicious creations. This program also supports the Seafood Watch Program. Chef Randal Gresham and Sous Chef Cameron Hodge seasonally spice up their menu by rotating elements to provide you with the freshest and most local ingredients possible. A&P’s casually elegant atmosphere and the hospitality of Assistant General Manager Jean Gresham will keep you coming back time and time again.

It’s hard to last 24 years without doing a lot of things right, and Sinclair’s has figured it out. Co-owners Bill Flippo and Johnny Sullivan have created an environment similar to “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name. Known for its warm, neighborly bistro atmosphere and long-standing staff, Sinclair’s is a charming staple in Old Cloverdale. Flippo’s wife, DJ, works hard behind the scenes to plate up the perfect dish that doesn’t lack on presentation. Our brunch favorite here is the eggs Benedict, and we can’t decide if the delicious East Fairview eggs or eggs tenderloin is better. It is still up for debate with the RSVP girls! If you are in the mood for something sweet, we highly recommend their specialty double lemon cheesecake. It’s amazing! Sinclair’s has one of the largest menus in Montgomery and those items are also available during lunch. While some of the restaurants we featured are open on Saturday or Sunday only, you can enjoy brunch on both days at Sinclair’s, and Sinclair’s East has the same delicious menu for brunch Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Last but not least, another thing we love about the Cloverdale location is the charming outdoor patio. What is better than brunch and cocktails outside on a sunny day?

It’s filled with beautiful, rich homemade cakes, danishes and pies, including cherry, pecan, chocolate cream, coconut cream, key lime and other selections. The strawberry cake is an RSVP favorite! I’d say we’re in a good place. A FRIEND RECENTLY SAID TO ME, “YOU LOOK HAPPY!” AND YOU KNOW, SHE WAS RIGHT. WE’RE FINALLY SETTLED IN OUR AMAZING NEW HOME AND LOVE THE AREA. IT’S REALLY PEACEFUL OUT HERE. THE KIDS ARE DOING GREAT – AND ENJOY RIDING THEIR BIKES TO SCHOOL. YEAH, I’D SAY WE'RE IN A GOOD PLACE. “HAPPY” PRETTY MUCH SUMS IT UP.
