What do Sharpies, New Orleans and the 1970s have in common? They each played a role in the inspiration behind by SMITH’s vibrant 2016 spring collection. A contemporary women’s line of sophisticated dresses and classic day-to-night separates, by SMITH’s founder and designer. 30-year-old Smith Sinrod, is celebrating her thirteenth collection with fresh prints, bold pops of color and softer combinations of easy-to-wear ensembles. Smith, Southern born and raised, has always had a knack for art. From a young age, her mom encouraged her to experiment with her creativity and that included with her wardrobe. She says, “I always played around with my own personal style and definitely took risks and chances in how I dressed and in cementing my individuality. In college at The University of Alabama, I really had the ability to explore my artistic side through my own fashion and was fortunate enough to begin creating my own collections with the encouragement of the university’s apparel design program, my family and sorority sisters.” And thus by SMITH was born… Adding a modern twist to traditional elegance, by SMITH is recognized for the use of Thai silk, vibrant colors and one-ofa-kind patterns, many of which are hand-designed by Smith herself. Launched in Atlanta and relocated to New York City in 2011, by SMITH is proudly manufactured in New York’s Garment District as part of the Made in America Movement.

Smith’s line can be found in several upscale boutiques across the country, including Montgomery’s own Painted Pink. Smith and her husband recently moved to The Big Easy, which is where much of the inspiration for the spring collection conspired. She says, “This collection really has been influenced by my new home in New Orleans. I’m inspired every day by the vibrant culture and colors found across the city, so expect for my spring 2016 collection to have lots of color. I also have been exploring designing prints with Sharpies and watercolor, so many of my pieces are actually patterns that I hand drew and translated to fabric.” From the young professional who wants to effortlessly transition from desk to drinks to the mom of three who is meeting friends for dinner, the by SMITH brand attracts a variety of women of all ages and styles.
I was anxious to know the style guru’s predictions for this year’s trends. Smith says, “This year we will see a lot of 70s inspired pieces, earthy colors mixed with bold primary colors and lots of flared pants.” “ Part of by SMITH’s charm is Smith’s involvement in the whole process. “No day is the same, which is something I love. Some days I am completely focused on painting and designing new prints for an upcoming collection, and other days I am coordinating with stores that carry the line and the factory in New York where my clothes are actually made. I oversee all aspects of the brand from concept to creation and everything in between, so I definitely wear many hats,” she says. These photos are a small assortment of looks from the spring collection; be sure to visit www.bysmithcollection. com for more, and look for the 2016 fall collection releasing this August!

JUMP AROUND ROCKIN’ JUMP LEAPS INTO MONTGOMERY’S ENTERTAINMENT SCENE
When Rockin’ Jump opened this February, we had to give it a try. We signed up for the very first jump time, and in about 15 minutes, we decided-- through panted breaths-- this is a must-try for anyone who wants to stay in motion! It’s impossible to be bored with all the attractions offered, which include a main arena (and a designated 6-and-under arena), a dodge ball arena, the x-beam and foam pit, stunt bag arena, slam dunk zone, and vertical ops rock climbing. And it’s fitness disguised as fun! According to a 1980 NASA study, 10 minutes of jumping on a trampoline provides the same fitness results as 33 minutes of running. If you’re feeling lost on your new year’s resolutions to get fit, you may be approaching it wrong. Trampolines are not just for kids; this may be the most fun you ever had getting fit.

A tribal trifecta By Kim Traff
T
he Poarch Band of Creek Indians is known for doing positive things, and I’m not just talking about the numerous sponsorships they donate to enrich our community or all the jobs they provide. I’m talking about bringing us first-class entertainment and dining just a few miles away. The $65 million renovation of Wind Creek Montgomery is not something to just read about- it is a must see. General Manager Jake Carlton gave RSVP a personal tour of the property, and his passion was undeniable. He loves good food and music that moves the soul, and it was his goal to bring that to Montgomery. This former Jacksonville State football player went from backing up the line on the field to backing up his employees and staff. His strong leadership skills have allowed him to translate his vision for Wind Creek Montgomery to his team, ensuring success of the casino. He loves that business differs every day so he is able to dabble in a little bit of everything from marketing or guest
services to food and entertainment. Although not technically in Memphis, one step into Wind Creek Montgomery and will you think you landed on Beale Street. With over 2,100 first class gaming machines, the best blues bar this side of the Mississippi and the rich, Southern cuisine of the restaurants, your senses are sure to be enticed. The old-style street lamps, exposed brick and hand-painted murals that depict Beale Street are just a few of the touches that set this location apart from its sister properties in Wetumpka and Atmore, both AAA Four Diamond hotels. The bar was set high, and it does not disappoint. This five-story hotel can also accommodate overnight guests with 123 hotel rooms including 13 suites, some opening up to the beautiful pool deck. Other offerings include conference rooms, a 5,800-square-foot ballroom for events, and a salon. Partnering with Beale Street Blues Company, the food and entertainment offerings are out of this world. First, you have BB King’s Blues Club.
Recreated from the original BB King’s in Memphis, this two-story club offers live entertainment every night of the week, from authentic blues to classic soul and rock and roll. Although Riley B. King, “BB King,” passed away in 2015 at 90 years old, you will see that his spirit and memory is still very much alive. Open daily for lunch, dinner and late-night meals, the club offers a full menu comprised of a variety of the South’s most delicious comfort foods, including jambalaya, catfish, burgers, po boys, pizza, barbecue, lip smackin’ ribs and much more. There is truly something for everyone in the family. That’s right… families are welcome as long as the kiddos don’t venture out to the gaming floor, which requires players to be 21.

Itta Bena might be Montgomery’s best-kept secret and that isn’t just because it is has a secret entrance. Up a long staircase or via a secret elevator, the door will open to the classiest, most charming restaurant around. Named for the town where BB King was born, Itta Bena embodies elegance with its white tablecloths, soft-blue lighting, baby grand piano, exposed beams, hundreds of candles and sophisticated wine display. The menu offerings are modern interpretations of Southern cuisine, including shrimp and grits, fresh fish, pasta dishes, and choice cuts of meat. With the talented Chef Rocky Prince leading this culinary team, your palate will be pleased. One of my favorite things offered by Wind Creek is the $10 in FREE Play they give the military on Saturdays as their way of saying thanks for serving our country. That’s just good Southern hospitality if you ask me.

He says the firm constantly provides him with opportunities for personal and professional growth. Grant largely thanks his parents for his success. Their stable and unwavering foundation during his upbringing has given Grant a great deal of respect and admiration for both of them. After they settled down in Huntsville, it was an easy decision for Grant to move to Montgomery and be close to his family. Grant loves the small town feel yet big city resources of Montgomery, but he mostly loves that the city led him to his wife, Candace. In his spare time, he enjoys weightlifting, working on cars and spending time with his daughter, Madi.

She has worked in retail and customer service for six years, but more recently has become a success in the tuxedo industry. Since November 2014, Katie has worked with Jim Massey and she now holds the title of senior store manager/digital media specialist at Jim Massey Formals. It can often be difficult for Katie to be in a high position at such a young age. She says that her age can change the way she is viewed in the workplace, but this motivates her to prove herself every day. Katie never dreamed of working in menswear, but now that she does, she could not see herself doing anything else. She is thankful for her friends, family and the community for the overwhelming support she’s been given during her time in Montgomery. Katie loves the history of the town and looks forward to exploring Montgomery even more.

Not only is she the sous chef, manager, bookkeeper and event coordinator for A Catered Affair, she is also a manager for Pike Road Butcher Block. She loves her work, especially when she has the opportunity to be creative with food displays. Jessica also thoroughly enjoys developing unique recipes and working with her mother, owner of A Catered Affair. The most rewarding part of her job, she says, is making someone’s special day even more amazing than expected. Cooking for people has truly become her passion. A 2005 graduate of Troy University, Jessica has experienced so much already--from working as a weapons mechanic in the Alabama Air National Guard to deployment in Iraq and now to assisting businesses in their growth and success in Montgomery. Through all of her life changes, she has felt overwhelming support from her family and community. Along with cooking, Jessica enjoys hunting with her dad, working on her jeep and visiting her brother.
AUBREY BLACKWELL Aubrey Blackwell has always been told that he is too young. In 2007, he was the youngest Division 1 pitching coach in the country. In 2013, after coaching football for three years, he was appointed offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Saint James School here in Montgomery. People were skeptical of his abilities, but he proved them all wrong. He felt the same doubts as he took on the role of head football coach at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School. Through all the conflicts, Aubrey says he knows his Lord and Savior put him in these positions for a reason. He is grateful to work with young people and be a Christian influence in their lives. He thanks his hometown of Montgomery and is constantly comforted by his church family at Heritage Baptist. Aubrey has a wife and two kids that he loves to spend time with, and he is dedicated to his students both at Montgomery Catholic and Heritage Baptist. He says “I feel blessed beyond measure with the calling and gifts with which God has blessed me.”
DAVID PEDEN David Peden spent eight years happily working for Starbucks Coffee Company. His time there taught him a great deal about how the needs of a business balance the needs of its customers. He uses that mentality as he moves forward in his current career as operations manager at Colonial Commercial Realty. David takes great joy in showing the company’s beautiful properties, meeting people from all over the world, and listening to their stories and hopes for their future homes. David received his Bachelor of Arts in music from Huntingdon College and his MBA from Auburn Montgomery. David says his education at Huntingdon, Montgomery’s hope for a fair and fulfilling future for all its citizens, and the courteous manner and hard work of the city’s ancestors have made him a more openhearted, compassionate and cultured person. He stays involved with his business, his church, and his wife and two sons. David’s favorite thing about Montgomery is exploring the beautiful neighborhoods found all over the city.

DBA: Mardi Gras Block Party Photos by Mac The Camera Guy Photography
Montgomery kicked off Mardi Gras with a bang this year. The Downtown Business Association (DBA) held a Deep South inspired block party for residents of all ages. About 1,500 people were able to come out and enjoy delicious food, jazzy music and samplings from a wide variety of local vendors. Businesses, as well as groups of friends, rented tailgate spots and went all out with fun Mardi Gras décor! No block party is complete without a band, and the Free Agents Brass Band certainly did not disappoint. Displaced from their New Orleans homes after Hurricane Katrina, the group found themselves in Atlanta as “free agents,” and their brass band funk was the perfect addition to the event. Most exciting, though, was the cook-off including The A&P Social, BB King’s, Central, Dreamland/Railyard as a combined team, D’Road, Itta Bena at WindCreek 56

Casino, Kudzu Noodle Bar, On A Roll, Saza, Wintzell’s, and the winner featuring New Orleans style baked oysters- Wishbone. It came as no surprise that these Cajun samplings were both artistic and delectable treats. After partnering with EatMGM, the event was able to raise $1,500 from the $10 cook off tasting tickets to benefit Valiant Cross Academy. Sponsors of this event included Poarch Creek Indians, a tremendous partner of DBA, and Wind Creek Montgomery and Wetumpka who were able to bring in tremendous New Orleans talent. DBA sends a special thanks to the city of Montgomery, EatMGM, Bama Budweiser, and the generosity of downtown businesses that are a part of DBA. The event was a great success that will hopefully be continued for many years to come!

The 53rd Annual Bal Masque Photos courtesy of Two Hawks Production The strong Southern women of Bal Masque, with firm ties of friendship, loyalty and trust, gathered at Garrett Coliseum on January 30, 2016 for a “Moonlight and Magnolias” themed Southern soiree. Guests arrived to an entry lined with magnolia trees, old window shutters and signs depicting Southern slogans such as Darlin’ Y’all and Bless Your Heart! The reception committee greeted them with iced tea or a beverage of their choice. The tableau, narrated by Bal Masque members, began shortly after 8 p.m. and entertained guests with dance performances to songs such as “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy, “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi, “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift, “She’s Country” by Jason Aldean, “Simply Irresistible” by Robert Palmer, and “Sugar” by Maroon 5. The queen, whose name is to remain a mystery, was escorted by her husband and entered the stage to the tune of “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars. She wore an elegant Allure designer, full-length gown and was greeted by her three sons. She was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers by her father and mother, the 1999 queen of Bal Masque. Then, all members and their dates enjoyed the first dance to the song “The Dance” by Garth Brooks. The stage was set around a starry blue-sky backdrop, and a wall of oversized magnolias made a dramatic impact. The table décor and queen’s bouquet were designed by Graylillies. Guests spent the night on the dance floor grooving to the band Trotline out of Columbus, Georgia.

UBER… a Brilliant Alternative to the Terrible Taxi By: Kim Traff Most of you are familiar with the term UBER, thanks to the weeks and weeks of city council meetings and media coverage discussing whether or not it would be allowed in our city. It has been picking up steam in cities all over the world and stirring up a bit of controversy with taxi companies, which will ultimately only force the taxi services to step up their game a notch… or three. We are pleased to announce that UBER is now here! Uber may be a familiar term to some of you who travel to other cities, but for others who may not venture out of the River Region, we hope it is a term that will soon become one of your favorite services ever.
WHAT SAY YOU, UBER? Uber is an alternative to the ridiculous and okay, let’s be real, the almost absent taxi service we have in this town. Uber connects drivers with customers in the easiest, quickest and safest way. Created in 2009 and now serving over 200 cities, once you become a member and build your profile, a quick click of a simple app on your phone delivers a reputable driver in a clean car to your destination in minutes. The Uber app shows you where the drivers are located and measures your car’s arrival in minutes. You get a text when the car is en route and a notification when it arrives. And you don’t have to worry about fumbling with cash or credit cards or dealing with tips because everything is taken care of within the app. With Uber for Business, employees can even attach expense codes or memos to their trip information, completely removing the hassle of saving receipts and filing expense reports. And in case you were wondering about safety, every driver is thoroughly screened through a rigorous process including an indepth criminal and driving background screening.
BEHAVE OR ELSE Unlike regular taxis, the Uber system punishes bad service from drivers but also gives bad passengers a 66
RSVP MAR / APR 2016
profile. Be rude, late or drunk once too often and suddenly you’ll find there is never a driver willing to pick you up. The customer-driver mutual rating system creates reciprocal obligations in which both sides are incentivized to be as nice as possible. And you just thought Chick-fil-A gave good service.
NO MORE HOOPTY Uber requires drivers to have a car that is at least as modern as 2006. And it allows customers to choose the type of car they hail. It’s the opposite with regular taxis, where you get what you’re given. Uber cars range from merely unremarkable — which is a good thing in taxi — to totally cool. Some drivers even have cold bottled water waiting for
68

you. There are different levels, the Uber X (standard car), the Uber XL (seats at least 6) and the SUV Black (Luxury Car), and the price depends on the car you select. Every Uber driver I’ve asked loves being an Uber driver. One recently reported that it saved his marriage…no, really. Most like being able to dip in and out of it when they feel like-- all by switching the app on or off. So, if you are looking for some extra income, have a clean record and a modern car, and don’t mind paying for a car inspection, sign up to be an Uber driver, and we can make this already awesome city… a little more awesome.

Table Talk
| by Angela Hardgrave
Lets Get Cooking!
What’s the last thing you’d expect to do at an appliance store on a Tuesday night? If you answered, “eat a perfectly cooked steak prepared by a local chef,” well, chances are that I would have agreed with you…until recently. I had the pleasure of being a willing student at a cooking class hosted by blogger and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Stacey Little, held in the demonstration kitchen of the beautiful AllSouth Appliance showroom. When I walked into the showroom, it was more party than classroom. Wine, tablecloths, roses— the Valentine’s Day theme was evident. The room was full of students, and Little greeted each one, creating a fun, lighthearted, familylike atmosphere. Little walked the class through all the steps of creating an impressive meal, in an amazingly short amount of time, all while throwing out useful kitchen tips and conveying his passion for “getting folks back to the table

for dinner.” With a little help from his students, the whole class enjoyed cast iron strip steak with Gorgonzola compound butter; a spring mix salad with strawberries, goat cheese and roasted pecans; oven-roasted potatoes, asparagus and green beans; and garlic bread. And of course, keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme, there had to be chocolate—a homemade brownie topped with chocolate ganache. Little said the inspiration for his classes came from years of people requesting that he do just that. He said, “Folks have been asking for years for me to host some type of cooking class, but I’ve been hesitant, being that I don’t have any formal training. What I realized is that folks actually find my cooking style more approachable being that I don’t. Ultimately, my goal is to get folks back to the table, and my classes help to show those that think they can’t cook, that they actually can.” His classes are as varied as the people that
attend. He has several repeat customers, everyone from an area oncology radiologist to a classroom teacher. There is even one person who drives from Columbus, Mississippi to attend! Little said, “We’ve done weeknight meal themes to give people easy ideas for busy weeknight meals. We’ve done breakfast for dinner, teaching people how to make homemade biscuits, quiche and sausage gravy. One lady told me her husband fell in love with her all over again after she learned to make homemade biscuits in my class! We’ve also done a holiday-themed class to show folks how to make simple and easy appetizers and holiday treats and sweets.” Although teaching others to prepare great food is important to Little, what is even more important is family. The meal itself is secondary to the connections made over those meals. He believes, “We always return home a little different than we left that morning, and family dinners are a great time to reconnect.” His cookbook, “The Southern Bite Cookbook” (Thomas Nelson: March 2014) and his blog, www. southernbite.com, are full of recipes that make getting a meal on the table easier, allowing families to spend more time together. Food and family are such an integral part of Southern culture, from parties to family reunions to funerals. Little’s Southern roots run deep. He grew up in the South, learning to cook from his mom and grandmother and now lives in central Alabama with his wife, little boy and his “collection of cast iron skillets.”
For information on upcoming classes, where to buy his book, recipes, videos and tips, visit Stacey Little’s blog or find him on Facebook. You and your family will be glad you did.
Little is not just a local celebrity. Southern Living Magazine named Little one of the top 30 bloggers to be following for two consecutive years. He has appeared on The Today Show and Fox and Friends and has worked with Betty Crocker, GE, White Lily, Martha White, Kraft and even Queen Latifah. Following the success of his first cookbook, “The Southern Bite Cookbook,” there is currently a second in the works, focusing mainly on quick and easy family dinners.

Here, it’s fun being a grown-up. EVERYONE TOLD US THAT HOME OWNERSHIP WAS AN IMPORTANT INVESTMENT. SO AS NEWLYWEDS, WE TOOK THAT STEP AND FOUND OUR OWN PLACE.
