his issue might be one of my favorites because it is filled with so many things I love. The cover and feature story on The Mulligan Brothers was a blast to put together as I have known band member Gram Rea for over 15 years. The Mulligan Brothers will be playing at The Montgomery Performing Arts Centre on Friday, June 17. If you are a music lover, don’t miss their incredible performance. Women’s fashion is no stranger to our magazine, but we shook things up a bit and included summer casual looks for our male audience. Josh and George at The Locker Room were a blast to work with. Be sure to stop by their store on Carter Hill and tell them we sent you! If you are looking for an outstanding meal with stellar service and understated elegance, check out our Table Talk feature on Vintage Year and make your reservations for dinner or brunch… you may see us there! Aubrie Moates is not only a talented photographer, she is a kind, gentle friend touching lives daily through her business, Hello Baby. Capturing the miracle of birth, we have featured some of her amazing work on page 30.

The River Region Guide for All Things Social vol. 9, Iss.3

One of the things we love about working at RSVP is the incredible people we meet and the fun field trips we take. “The LIST” recognizes another fantastic group of individuals doing cool things in our community. When we went to take photos at Go Karting Montgomery, we decided to try out the track and had a blast being a kid again. Plan your field trip ASAP… you won’t regret it! There are several events taking place every week, and we have recapped many of them in our Socially Seen section as well as provided you a calendar with all the upcoming events for May and June. Thank you for allowing us to be your resource for all things social! As we say goodbye to our spring intern, Maggie Mobley, we wish her the best as she starts a career at Colonial Insurance Company.

S

ummer is coming. Sweltering heat, cold beer, sticky skin, neighborhood walks and the smell of honeysuckle and burgers on a backyard grill. When the sun doesn’t set until 8 p.m. and cricket chirps are audibly the background music to your life, you know summer is in full swing and fun is all around. Oh, those summer nights. Guys, it’s easy to throw on your old t-shirt for those barbecue get togethers, but it’s probably time your summer wardrobe gets an update. Take a cue from these casual looks from The Locker Room, and those summer nights will be even hotter.

In life there are many defining moments - your high school graduation and your wedding day to name a few - both of which are commonly photographed. But is there anything more defining than when you welcome your new baby into the world? Hello Baby, a team of talented professional photographers, led by Aubrie Moates, knows that the big moments and the little details of birth are treasures you’ll hold dear to your heart forever. Birth is intimate, passionate and ultimately - a love story. “Photographing births has been a soul-awakening journey. Witnessing the birth of a baby began to center me. With the miracle of life right in front of my eyes (and lens), all of life’s petty worries faded away,” shares Aubrie.

RSVP MAY / JUNE 2016

Birth photography is truly more than delivery room photos; it captures the anticipation leading up to the birth, the family surrounding you, your partner supporting you, your expressions the moment you meet your little one, your baby’s first snuggles, weighing, bath, and the siblings meeting their new family member. There are so many emotions, expressions and moments that make up birth. Over time, things are easily forgotten, missed or grow foggy over time, but birth photography is a true documentation of your child’s birthday...it’s a story.

And Hello Baby’s clients are eternally grateful. “We loved everything about our experience with Hello Baby! Aubrie’s talent is remarkable and her sweet personality is so refreshing! She is all around amazing! Aubrie’s work and the photos from our birth story are truly priceless! There is no amount of money that could ever replace our precious photos from Edy’s birth!” - Ashley and Joseph Williams.

“I needed the scene surrounding the arrival of our little miracle to be as intimate as possible, with little to no unexpected chaos, since at the time, we had no idea if my battle with cancer was going to ultimately be won. Thanks to Aubrie, we are able to relive every sound, touch, laugh and tear that all came flooding together on that most beautiful day, and know that our life was chosen for something so much more than we will ever understand.” - Katie Griffies

“When I think of Aubrie with Hello Baby Photography, I think back to 8 months ago as I labored to bring my precious baby boy into this world. I can close my eyes and hear Aubrie almost whispering “you’re ok mama.” Aubrie is truly a mama whisperer. Without her coaching my husband and I, I would not have been able to successfully have a natural childbirth. Her spirit is so calming and pure. With Aubrie by my side, I felt her quiet reassurance. As a first time mom, this kind of support was invaluable. When it’s time to start planning for baby number two, my husband and I will meet with Aubrie to ensure she’s available to share our birth experience. We are so blessed to have gotten to share the welcoming of our son with a woman with such talent and beauty - both inside and out.” - Mrs. FM Aaron

The birth photos are timeless treasures that serve as a portal, taking you back to those emotional, heartfelt moments.

“I was always scared of labor and never thought I would want pictures in the delivery room, let alone have them taken by a professional birth photographer. But my first pregnancy was a loss, and as my belly grew with my rainbow baby, I was drawn into the incredible miracle of the birth process. The pictures and videos struck me, capturing the raw emotions and events of labor, birth and nursing, and I knew I would regret not having my own memories. The moment I met Aubrie, I knew I wanted her at my birth. Not only did she have an incredible eye for these moments and her pictures were gorgeous, but she was such a beautiful person inside and out and she immediately put me at ease. She didn’t just give us pictures that we cherish, she also bottled up the magic of that night, giving us the ability to take it out and relive it again and again.” - Brooke K

Quietly capturing every little detail and emotion, Hello Baby is a fly on the wall of your most important day. “I was interested in using a birth photographer, but I was honestly hesitant to invite a stranger in to share this enormously personal experience of first time birth. After meeting with Aubrie in the middle of my pregnancy I had a complete sense of calm and I knew that I would feel comfortable with her on my delivery day. Her personality and presence genuinely put me at ease. Aubrie wholly honored my birth experience. She cared about every single aspect and detail of it. She checked in with me in the weeks leading up to my delivery date. She probably doesn’t know it, but she encouraged me through her work for months as I eagerly waited for the unknown. I was attracted to her work because it encompasses integrity and truth. Her photos are an honest illustration of each unique birth. She captured the most precious moments of my life - a gift that my daughter will always have so that she can see, and her daddy and I can remember, what a glorious and celebratory day her birthday is.” - Emily Thomas

Lifelong bonds with each of these families emerged, and not wanting the story to end there, Hello Baby recently added newborn portraiture to their repertoire. And because those first few days and weeks with a newborn can be exhausting, Aubrie and the Hello Baby team have taken out the stress of the experience by offering everything from hair, makeup, wardrobe and professional retouching, so all you have to do is bask in the loving glow of your newest family member.

the Mulligan Brothers By Jessica Klinner • Photos by Michelle Carroll Stancil

Survey any group of artists and 98 percent of them will say they grew up wanting to play music. It’s very rare that serious artists realize their passion for music later in life. It happens, no doubt, but it’s rare. Some hop from instrument to instrument, trying to figure out which one suits them best; others know from the start exactly what they’re meant to play. While Ross Newell, lead singer and guitarist of The Mulligan Brothers, reminisces about his experience growing up with a passion for music, he pauses to recall drummer Greg Deluca’s experience before continuing on. 36

RSVP MAY / JUNE 2016

“Anybody who’s ever been in bands has this memory of the day they were told what instrument they would be good for,” Newell says. “They pointed Greg out and said, ‘You’re a tuba player. You’ve got the right build and everything to be a tuba player.’ He looked them dead in the eye and said, ‘No way. I’m a drummer.’” This mentality sits at the foundation of the Mobile-based folk band -- a strong-willed determination to stay focused on making music their way without giving in to other influences.

Like many bands starting out, The Mulligan Brothers spent many nights playing to crowds in the local bar scene. Newell and fiddle/mandolin/ viola player Gram Rea played around Mobile as a duo. Across town, bassist Ben Leininger and Deluca were playing as solely a rhythm section, inviting local singers and guitarists to join them for different gigs. Newell played with them a few times and realized their connection was not something to ignore. After being in different bands throughout their lives, the quartet banded together and formed The Mulligan Brothers.

“We learned a lot from our previous projects and wanted to try again knowing what we know now,” Newell says. “…Like a mulligan in golf, this was kind of our chance to try again.” And try again they did. With the release of their debut, self-titled album in 2013, The Mulligan Brothers brought their well-crafted blend of bluegrass and folk to the public. “It’s been just amazing the amount of people who’ve let us know how much the album means to them and how they feel like the songs are about them,” Newell says. The Mulligan Brothers are definitely in good company. With Alabama natives like Alabama Shakes, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Little Big Town and The Band Perry rocking the airwaves over the last few years, it’s never been a better time to be a part of the Alabama music scene. “I’m proud that everybody seems to have kind of taken influence from all this great music they’ve heard growing up and local performers, but nobody’s just copied it,” Newell says. “Nobody’s just photocopied it and ran with it like the instinct would be. Everybody’s really kind of made their own thing out of their influences.” If you take a second and ask any fan, they’ll tell you that Newell has an incredible way with words. His songwriting ability is among the best in the folk world, spilling his guts and poring every ounce

of emotion in his body into each song. Whether he’s writing from a place of vulnerability, pain or joy, he’s writing from the heart. “You want the songs to be personal because that’s where the good stuff comes from when you’re being legitimately honest and sharing yourself in the songs, but you don’t want it to be so personal that nobody else gets it,” Newell says. For their second album, Via Portland, the band took a trek across the country, which was no big deal to them with the amount of touring they’ve done, to record at Ice Cream Studios in Portland, Oregon. The band joined forces with a Grammy-winning producer and member of Los Lobos, Steve Berlin. The collaboration came about because of a mutual friend who passed The Mulligan Brothers’ music to Berlin. He soon reached out to the band and offered to work with them on their second

38

RSVP MAY / JUNE 2016

album. After figuring out schedules, The Mulligan Brothers decided to rent a house in Portland and live together while recording the new album. This created an exciting atmosphere for the band to get comfortable and creative. “From the beginning of the day, we just were almost hyper focused on the recording,” Newell recalls. “When you do a job you love, there’s a lot of keys. If it’s a job you don’t love, you cut the corners and try to get the job somewhat done. When you love it though, you find yourself in the constant position of reminding yourself that this is worth your time. Do the absolute best you can.” With every gig they play, The Mulligan Brothers inch closer and closer to nationwide recognition. Get on the bandwagon now before it’s too late!

ould you rather spend the weekend zooming around a racetrack or shooting lasers at your friends? Here’s a better question: why not do

Go Karting Montgomery is the answer to that dilemma. One of Montgomery’s relatively newest attractions, the venue specializes in outdoor go karting but also offers up a plethora of other activities including laser tag, indoor bumper cars and indoor mini golf.

Dr. Don Nguyen (pronounced Wynn), an optometrist who has lived in California, Illinois and Nevada but considers Montgomery to be “home,” owns the location with his wife, Cam, also an optometrist. The idea to open a go kart track came from childhood memories with his father.

Below is a rundown of what Go Karting Montgomery offers: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

outdoor go karting indoor laser tag indoor bumper cars indoor mini golf mini Ferris heel mini roller coaster chuck wagon ride 80s video game arcade billiard tables air hockey tables ping pong tables foosball skeeball two party rooms

www.gokartingmontgomery.com “Go karting began as a hobby then grew into a business. That business eventually evolved into an amusement park,” Nguyen said. “Subconsciously, I was reconstructing my past - memories of my childhood days window shopping with my dad. I was no longer a spectator. I was now a participant in the American Dream.” The spirit behind Go Karting Montgomery is one all families can enjoy. Who doesn’t like smiling faces behind a zooming go kart? Or the nostalgia of an 80s arcade? Or the classic feeling of being on a Ferris wheel? Go Karting Montgomery has it all. (Disclaimer: the Ferris wheel is of the “mini” variety). However, the family-friendly aspect of Go Karting Montgomery goes beyond the fun time had on the rides. The website’s disclaimer emphatically states: “don’t be a jerk.”

“We welcome wholesome, family fellowship but will not tolerate any form of hate, discrimination, aggression, arrogance, misconduct or negativity. Positive something is better than negative nothing,” the statement also reads. Go Karting Montgomery is only open regularly on Saturdays and Sundays, with weekdays designated for large party reservations. This is due mainly to the owners’ full-time jobs. However, the hours also emphasize Nguyen’s point about Go Karting Montgomery being more about the experience than making money. “GKM is practically nonprofit,” he said. “We are open minimally because we all have our full-time careers. It is our way of giving back to the community. MAY / JUNE 2016 RSVP 41

DAVID FETTES Blackfinn Ameripub is quickly becoming a Montgomery favorite, and David Fettes is no secret in all of the success. David is the operating partner of the fantastic new restaurant. His parents spent many years in the restaurant business, and David had the opportunity to work under them and learn from their success while he completed high school as well as college. After graduation, he spent several years working for well-known restaurants in Florida then Chicago. He was later transferred to Indiana, and after a considerable amount of time spent in cold weather, he decided to relocate to the South, settling down in Montgomery. In 2014, David left the restaurant chain he had worked for in order to start Blackfinn. He has enjoyed the excitement of this startup as well as the environment of a smaller organization. David met his wife, Mary-Kate, while working in the restaurant business, and together they have two wonderful children.

SOMMER VAUGHN A Samford University graduate, Sommer Hawthorne Vaughn worked for the first female chair of the Alabama Republican Party (Montgomery native Twinkle Cavanaugh), after her term she moved to Montgomery to work for John McCain’s presidential campaign. She served in the Riley administration and most recently served as deputy chief of staff for the first Republican Speaker of the House in 135 years. As of November, Sommer joined the firm of Swatek, Howe and Ross. She considers her grandmother as having the biggest influence on her success. Sommer says, “She taught me from a young age that I could be and do anything I wanted if I kept a strong work ethic and treated everyone with respect and kindness.” In an industry dominated by men, she has held on to her grandmother’s advice and knows that hard work and dedication replaces any obstacles she may face. She loves Montgomery for the great friendships and mentors she has found. Sommer is married to Joshua Vaughn and they have a 4-year-old son, Gaines, and two dogs, Cash and Abigail.

With sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s, the weather could not have been more perfect for the third annual Ranch Roundup. Supporters of the Family Sunshine Center put on their cowboy boots and giddied up for a fun time! The April 16, 2016 event went off without a hitch. Surrounded by hundreds of cacti and a tin-roof cantina filled with colored lights and hand-painted murals, The Bartlett Ranch provided the perfect Southwestern setting for the evening. Guests received valet treatment on chauffeured golf carts provided by Battery Source. Kicking off the festivities, guests sipped on beer and wine donated by International and Allstate Beverage while enjoying music by the Lo-Fi Loungers.

57th Annual La Fete Ball Photos by: Richard Patterson of Village Photographers

The Queen making a grand entrance

The ladies of La Fete and their guests shook, shimmied and roared at Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum on April 9, 2016, during La Fete’s 57th annual ball. The “Party Like Gatsby” theme was inspired by the big parties and lavish lifestyle of the 1920s. To set the ambience for Saturday night, members of the Stage Scenery Committee transformed Garrett Coliseum into one of Jay Gatbsy’s infamous mansion parties. As guests arrived, they were greeted with a glass of champagne to enjoy before the tableau began. The stage was set with a custom-made backdrop of a black-and-gold art deco design. The focal point was a large chandelier adorned with various sizes of black, white and gold paper lanterns. 60

A highlight of the ball is always the dance choreography by the ladies of La Fete. Four groups and the Board each had their own dance routine that wowed guests. The tableau finale was set to Fergie’s “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody,” and the queen made her entrance in a 1920s Roadster. Her husband and son met her on the dance floor, and the first dance commenced. The party went on into the wee hours of the evening as guests danced to the tunes of Big Night Dynamite, a Georgia band which had everyone on their feet. It was a night of fun had by all!

Junior League of Montgomery’s 90th Anniversary Gala Photos by: Bryan Carter

In 1926, ten young women founded the Junior League of Montgomery and laid the premise of community service and voluntarism that defines the organization today. Ninety years later, JLM commemorated this significant milestone on Thursday, April 7 at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa with an evening of celebration and reflection. This 90th anniversary celebration featured special guests including Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education Jeana Ross, and Impact America Founder Stephen Black. Over the past nine decades, JLM has donated millions of volunteer hours and millions of dollars to causes and organizations that work to directly improve and enhance the quality of life for families in the River Region and the night’s celebration was not without its fair share of altruism. During the single evening JLM gave away $32,220 to local nonprofit organizations that make an impact on our city and its people each day. The 90th Anniversary Gala would not have been possible without the support of title sponsor Beasley Allen, along with JLM’s valued partners Wind Creek, Baptist Health, AUM Outreach, PrimeSouth Bank, and ServisFirst Bank. Sunday Funday, or maybe we should say Sunday Furday, has never been more fun! On April 10, 2016, Taylor Crossing hosted Wags 4 Wishes to benefit the Bullock County Animal Shelter, which is devoted to providing temporary shelter and finding homes for stray, abandoned and owner-surrendered pets in the Bullock County community. The excitement and education was in full throttle with demonstrations of bomb and drug detection dogs, Montgomery Zoo raptors and handlers, a snake and reptile show, a raccoon rescue group, teddy bear surgeries, horseback riding, a bouncy house, and face painting. Staff from Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital grilled hotdogs on site and DJ Billy Stample kept the crowd entertained with today’s hottest hits. With over 800 in attendance giving donations, $6,455 was raised for the Bullock County Animal Shelter. This unique, educational and fun day proved to be one of the most successful family and fur-friendly events we have ever seen! A big thank you to all of the sponsors who made this event possible.

WonderFULL Wo r l d o f F a s h i o n

The WonderFULL World of Fashion burst on the scene a few years ago as a way to showcase full-figured women in designer fashions. Creator Tonya Terry took on the task of bringing a message to the masses that a woman’s size has nothing to do with how fashionable or confident she can be. Â

Tonya says full-figure fashion has come a long way. “I can remember my mom having to get all of her clothes made by a local seamstress because there were so few options for plus-size women back then. Thank goodness, things have changed!” The WWOF models have dubbed the annual show “A Curvy Ministry” because they pray together, bond in sisterhood and encourage one another to see their beauty no matter their size. Many of these women are getting positive reinforcement about their bodies for the first time in their lives when they audition for this fashion show designed especially for them. It’s the only one of its kind in this area. Terry sees the change her WonderFULL World of Fashion audition process makes. She says, “We have ladies come in our doors feeling pretty down about themselves and their curves. But they spend a few weeks with us getting ready for the show and hit that catwalk ready to slay the runway. Their confidence level shoots sky high and that really is beautiful!”

Beauty in the e y e of t h e c ons u m e r

[ Decoding Labels ] When it comes to beauty products, there are a few things worth knowing. First, all beauty products don’t have to be approved by the FDA. Another interesting tidbit is the FDA doesn’t have the authority to recall a product. What this means is that there is no higher power looking out for us when it comes to what products we purchase and use on our skin. Here are some product tips to help you be a smart consumer.

1

The leaping bunny The recognized leaping bunny symbol is the highest guarantee that no animals were harmed—in all stages of development and production, and it goes for all parties involved, including labs and suppliers. The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) audits companies wishing to use the symbol on their packaging to be sure they adhere to the symbol’s strict cruelty-free standards. PETA will give you a pat on the back for this purchase.

2

“e” The lowercase “e” is a symbol called the “estimated sign.” Only found on products produced in the European Union, it ensures that the amount of product in the packaging is correct. Basically, it says you’re getting what you paid for volume-wise. Another interesting thing about the “e” is that the product is up to European Standards. EU bans more than 1,300 ingredients but the FDA only bans 11. I’ll buy that vowel!

3

The jar with a number and “M” This jar and floating lid tells you how long your product is good for after breaking the seal and opening. You wouldn’t eat mayonnaise after it expired so don’t use products after they go bad either.

So Sensitive Don’t think a product is safe just because it says natural, green or synthetic-free. After all, poison ivy is natural, right? Synthetic fragrances will be labeled as fragrance or parfum. Trade secret laws don’t require companies to disclose what that chemical is so if you have allergies or sensitive skin, beware.

The P Words Phthalates can be found in everything from lotion and fragrance to water bottles. They give your skin a silky smooth feeling. Parabens are preservatives used to extend the shelf life of their products. Both sound harmless but have been linked to DNA damage, increased skin aging, some cancers and more commonly hormone disruption. Let’s admit it ladies, our hormones don’t need any help with disruption. Avoid anything ending in paraben.

Vintage Year Photos by: Mark Dauber

Tucked away in the Old Cloverdale entertainment district is a rare gem that has a long history of offering fine dining to the River Region. Vintage Year first opened as The Chophouse at Vintage Year in 1984, and after closing for a season, was reopened by new owners Derk Lyerly and Jud Blount on January 5, 2016. In addition to dropping Chophouse from the name, the owners have also changed the philosophy of the restaurant—creating a new history in the process. Vintage Year began as a wine shop, but eventually started serving patrons gourmet lunches to go with their wines. Lunches led to dinner service, which now includes a menu featuring hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, duck, rich desserts and an impressive wine and spirits list. Their cuisine ranges from Southern American to French American. On a recent visit, Chef Frederick Henderson certainly impressed me. All the dishes I sampled were as excellent as they were beautiful.

I started the evening with a cocktail called Big Mama’s Punch, which was delightfully fizzy and fruity, and then the server brought out warm bread with herb butter and pan-seared scallops with a lemon-chive buerre blanc. My next course was the spinach salad with fried goat cheese and hot bacon vinaigrette. It’s rare that a salad really stands out in a meal, but this one did - spinach, berries, bacon and then the fried goat cheese, which was like a grown-up grilled cheese, made for a stellar dish. I then moved to my main course, the blackened grouper with crawfish dirty rice, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. For a sweet ending, my server suggested Vintage Year’s signature dessert, a chocolate bread pudding. It didn’t disappoint. General Manager Chase Brown explained the philosophy of the food they serve at Vintage Year. He said, “It’s about quality food, fresh and local, and about quantity. We are a straightforward restaurant, offering straightforward, good

comfort food.” For the local part, they use several purveyors from our area, including Al Hooks Farms in Shorter, Destin Connection in Montgomery, and Oakview Farms in Wetumpka, among others. Even though the food was wonderful, the atmosphere and the service may have rivaled the menu. Although Vintage Year is a fine dining establishment, it’s certainly not stuffy. There is an understated elegance and a lively ambience, making you want to linger over your dessert and coffee. Brown said, “We want everyone to be comfortable when they come here. I think we have the best service in town— wine knowledge, spirits knowledge, experience. We want everything to be seamless from the time you get here to the time you leave.” In addition to the Tuesday through Saturday dinner service, Vintage Year also has a weekly brunch. Brown said, “Our brunch is every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. One unique thing about our brunch is that it includes a Bloody Mary bar.” The brunch menu includes dishes such as eggs benedict, crab cakes, chicken and waffles, French toast, and omelets. Reviews of the newly-reopened restaurant have been favorable. Comments from the popular foodie site OpenTable describe Vintage Year as “beautiful,” “excellent” and “fantastic.” To find out what folks are talking about, try them out for yourself. Vintage Year is located at 405 Cloverdale Road in Montgomery, and they are open for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and Sunday Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, a full menu and a wine and spirits list, visit their website at www.vymgm.com.

Appreciating safety just as much as a great accessory, they set out and formed a line of safe and sassy products ranging from auto emergency kits, pepper spray, stun guns and more. Cooking in this event provided me with significant opportunities to assist and be a part of a national level culinary effort. My greatest takeaway was working with Chef Michel who implicitly trusted my skills, palate, organizational efforts and planning. His guidance reaffirmed the direction we are headed in here at the hotel.”
