FEEL THE BURN
By Taylor Hannah / Photos by Stephen Poff
A workout that keeps burning calories AFTER you leave the gym…it sounds too good to be true; but Orangetheory was designed to do just that, and this heart rate based interval-training studio is making a name for itself, quickly growing around the country. At Orangetheory, science meets fitness by harnessing excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC for short…. or more fondly, the afterburn). Members wear a monitor to track the heart rate throughout the class, and each member’s heart rate is on display in real time on a big screen that can be checked throughout the class. Each class is divided into cardio and weight training and is designed to maintain a target heart rate zone that stimulates metabolism and keeps you burning calories up to 36 hours after the class. Heart rate levels are designated by color, and the more time you spend in the orange and red zones, the more afterburn you will experience. It’s the workout that keeps on working you out. The handy Orangetheory app allows you to schedule your classes and track your statistics from each class. Each class is different so you never get bored, but you always get a total body workout with a focus on endurance, strength, power and a combination of all three. It can be nerve-racking trying a new workout for the first time, but at Orangetheory, your fears are subsided by the friendliness of the staff, their knowledge of the techniques and their patience with you as you are learning. The four coaches and owner, Lauren Goldasich, are passionate about member’s health. Learn more about them on the next page and check out Orangetheory Fitness Montgomery located at 1645 Perry Hill Road, 334.409.2007, orangetheoryfitness.com.
MEET THE COACHES LAUREN GOLDASICH, owner What led you to Orangetheory? Orangetheory Fitness is the vehicle to fulfill my purpose in life. My mission statement is “to build up leaders in the fitness industry so they can empower their teams to make a positive difference in the lives of those in the surrounding communities.” Orangetheory Fitness is the “best one-hour workout in the country” because it appeals to and challenges all fitness levels. By bringing the concept to Montgomery and Auburn, our team has been able to positively impact so many people. What is your personal fitness philosophy? “The only workout you’ll regret is the one that didn’t happen.” “Get your workout in early in the day. There are fewer excuses before the sun rises. No one can call you for happy hour at 5 a.m.” What is your favorite “treat” meal? Chocolate flourless anything and red wine.
ELLEN WOOLRIDGE What led you to Orangetheory? OTF is a unique alternative to the everyday, blasé fitness experience. Using heart rate to determine each participant’s effort level regardless of their state of fitness is an excellent, safe way to maximize each client’s fitness challenge which will ultimately help them achieve their goals. Helping others achieve their idea of where they should be from a health standpoint is my ultimate goal as an instructor and OTF is the best vehicle I have encountered to achieve this. What is your personal fitness philosophy? My personal fitness philosophy is that "excuse" is the archenemy of "fit." You live for one or the other as they cannot co-exist. Find out who you want to be and remove anything in your life that keeps you from becoming "you!" What is your favorite “treat” meal? My "treat meal" is Mexican food and anything with peanut butter and chocolate.

What is your personal fitness philosophy? Find a type of exercise or fitness program that you truly enjoy and you’ll never stop. What is your favorite “treat” meal? Pizza and chocolate anything
ART FERTILITY PROGRAM OF ALABAMA By Angela Hardgrave • Photos by Bryan Carter & Aubrie Moates Around the world, approximately 361,481 babies are born every day. That’s 251 babies per minute! Go almost anywhere in our area, and you will see the evidence of that—families with one, two, three or more children. But, what happens when another’s reality is just out of reach for you? What options does a couple have when their dream of becoming parents seems to be an impossibility? For those in the River Region, there is hope. One team of physicians is on a mission to help couples realize their dream of having a child. ART Fertility Program of Alabama provides medical services and personal care to couples struggling with the heartbreak of infertility, with the objective of helping them have healthy babies. Their success rate shows their dedication to this objective. Over the past 30 years, ART Fertility Program has helped bring over 12,000 babies into the world.
They have offices in Montgomery, Birmingham, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, where their team of highly skilled professionals work to give their patients the best care possible. The team of physicians includes Dr. Kathryn L. Honea, Dr. Virginia L. Houserman, Dr. Cecil A. Long and Dr. M. Christopher Allemand. “We have a mission to deliver the highest quality, most compassionate fertility care possible in the state of Alabama and the Southeast region. We have a broad reach and are able to provide care for more people with our satellite locations,” said Dr. Allemand. “We are a fullservice fertility clinic and have all the available modern services to provide to our patients, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg donation, donor insemination, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA). We also offer surgical procedures
that other fertility clinics don’t offer, such as laser laparoscopy for endometriosis, and correction of uterine abnormalities. This makes us more well-rounded.” The staff at ART strives to make sure each couple feels that they are special. Dr. Allemand said, “We spend a lot of time talking to couples, and if needed, we will refer them out to further counseling. Every case is unique— every case is special. We are impacting lives. I have a part in something rewarding…helping families grow. I love when families send me pictures of the children I’ve helped bring into the world.” Although each case is unique, sometimes a patient’s journey will really stand out. Dr. Allemand said, “I had one case where this woman had a poor prognosis—a very smart, well-informed professional. She wanted to try IVF with her own eggs. This is not something I encouraged since there was a very low chance of success. She persisted though, and it worked. She was right, and I was wrong. She had a healthy baby with her own eggs. I don’t know if I will ever see a case like that again, but it made a lifelong impact.” The staff at ART Fertility Program realizes that their work can change lives forever by helping build families and making dreams come true. Dr. Allemand said, “We have a passion for helping couples. We respect the role that people allow us to play in their lives. It’s a special privilege that never gets old or repetitive. We forge longlasting relationships with each of our patients. I’ve been doing this a long time, but I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do.” If you are struggling with infertility, reach out to ART Fertility Program. Call them at 1.800.476.9784, or visit their website at fertilityprogramalabama.com.
Rebecca Mathews was a patient with ART Fertility Program and one of their many success stories. She shared her journey through infertility and her experience with ART.
What made you choose ART Fertility Program? I have a few friends who have walked the journey of infertility and they all led me to ART. Specifically, I loved that ART had a satellite office in Montgomery, which made appointments super easy and convenient.
Describe your experience with ART. This question makes me get a little weepy. From day one, I felt that I was more than a number or just a broken womb. My doctor, Dr. Houserman, gave me hope at my first appointment, and hope may be one of the most important things while traveling the road of infertility. I think the most influential people I met through ART were the nurses at the office in Montgomery. Oh how I LOVE those incredibly kind, patient and loving women. I call them my "baby making team!" I swear they prayed my sweet son into existence (along with MANY others). I was always greeted with a smile, a hug and joyfulness. Even at my lowest points, these women held my hand and my heart and saw it out to the end.... right alongside me. I never felt alone, which was such a blessing because infertility can be extremely lonely and isolating. I love to keep in touch with them and go back for visits and hugs. I think I am most excited about taking baby Jack to meet them. I know it will be such a special, emotional moment that I will always cherish.
Can you share your infertility journey? How did ART help you? I feel blessed because my infertility journey wasn’t as long as others, but I also don’t discount it because of that either. There were times where I felt like I couldn’t be upset over it because I have friends who walked that road for over five years! Their strength blows my mind and inspires me to this day. But our journey was still longer than I would have wanted. After trying for a year we went to ART, and eventually, after months of different treatments, we were told IVF would be our best option going forward. IVF can be an overwhelming process, but with ART, I never felt
NOV / DEC 2016 RSVP 37
overloaded. Everything was broken down into a manner in which I not only easily understood, but also never felt daunted by. The constant monitoring I received due to the treatment meant I got to see my girls in the Montgomery office all the time, which made me very happy! After one round of IVF, I got the fun phone call from two of my nurses that I was PREGNANT! Their joy could not be contained, and the three of us just squealed! It’s one of my favorite memories from this journey.
What would you say to other women who are facing the same struggles? I think the most important thing to remember and the biggest takeaway I learned from my infertility journey is that in the end, infertility gives more than it takes. It’s such a hindsight notion, but I truly feel blessed for the struggle. I walked away from it with a stronger walk with Christ, a stronger marriage, and strengthened friendships. Through this journey I learned more about myself and my own strength than I could ever have imagined. It also taught me that there are incredibly kind people out there who love me and who step up and pray until their knees are black and blue from all the kneeling and praying. Also, infertility has given me my Jack, the son I was always meant to have. My heart can rest so peacefully in that. Lastly, it gave me seven new friendships in the staff at the ART office in Montgomery and Dr. Houserman. They shared in my joys on the happy days, were my strength on the hard days, smiled for me when I felt I couldn’t, held me when the tears wouldn’t stop, and always always made me hope.
Any final thoughts you would like to share? I’m not sure why infertility can be such a taboo topic to some people. I was so blessed with an incredible community of family and friends who would just let me talk or cry, and I always felt better afterward. And to whoever may be currently walking this road, please know you will be more blessed by it than you can imagine. Sometimes that just takes time. One of my closest friends looked at me one night and shared the sweetest words that I carried with me throughout our struggle. She said, "I know you’re going to be a mom one day. I don’t know when that will be or what it will look like, but I know it will happen". And it did.
Rebecca and her husband welcomed Jack Hutchison on October 13, 2016 at 1:21 p.m. weighing 7 lbs and measuring 20.5 inches.

Table Talk By Charlie Dunn • Photos by Josh Moates Where Atlanta Highway and Perry Hill Road converge, to the right is a new home for three brand new, casual dining restaurants for residents of our tiny metropolis to enjoy. It is a space that offers the city the chance to experience three different, uniquely separate flavors that Montgomery has never seen. At the new Perry Hill Crossing Shopping Center, SOL Restaurante Mexicano & Taqueria, Shane’s Rib Shack, and Wharf Casual Seafood all bring something fresh and inspiring to the table, and people are already flocking to get a taste of what’s new. Developer David McClinton, the man behind the scenes who worked to integrate these new dining destinations, had reasons for wanting to give this area a much-needed upgrade. “The intersection of Perry Hill Road and Atlanta Highway is a bustling commercial intersection,” McClinton said. “Commercial neighbors like Publix, Winn Dixie, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Wells Fargo made it fairly obvious to me that the Southeast corner needed to be redeveloped for its highest and best use. As I began to study the area and understand certain aspects in which it was underserved, it again was apparent that having more restaurant options of varying sorts would be welcomed.” With the integration of these three establishments, residents of Montgomery and surrounding areas are offered the chance to enjoy a little Mexican flare, fresh catches of seafood, or relish in a new take on our passion for barbecue. Amid familiar fast-food establishments and seeking to fill a void that the community needs, McClinton, who has already recognized that the area is thriving, is confident that this new development will continue to be a hit. “Zaxby’s and Burger King offer quick, quality, convenient service and have had strong openings. Shane’s Rib Shack, SOL Restaurante & Taqueria, and Wharf Casual Seafood provide excellent casual dining choices for our immediate and extended trade area, as evidenced by the crowds at lunch and dinner. Because Perry Hill Crossing is being developed and leased in a way that is filling retail, restaurant and service needs for its community, I believe the project will continue to be a success,” McClinton said. And now, let’s take a look at exactly what these three new restaurants are, who they serve, and why you should make a trip and veer off course from your routine go-to dining destinations for something distinctly different that will have you making repeat trips to Atlanta Highway. 42

TABLE TALK It’s authentic Mexican food that you can afford. Owner and Operator Al Luna spent two years looking for the perfect location for his restaurant and worked on the menu for eight months. He traveled to Mexico three times to gather recipes from his family, search for authentic décor, and seek inspiration for what he hoped would be the place for people to indulge in fine Mexican cuisine. So far, so good, and people are quickly finding a new hot spot to enjoy all things South of the border. “Our restaurant is a place where you can bring your family and friends to dine in and enjoy authentic Mexican food and receive exceptional service in a really cool atmosphere,” Luna’s wife, Allison Luna, said. “We are family owned and operated so it automatically has a family vibe. We have already seen professionals at lunch, people on a date night or girls’ night out, and we have received tremendous support from the surrounding neighborhoods. Everyone seems to know each other when they walk in.” With over 30 years in the restaurant industry and owning over eight restaurants, Mr. and Mrs. Luna know what they’re doing. From staple foods like enchiladas or fajitas, to quesadillas and homemade guacamole, there is something at SOL Restaurante & Taqueria for everyone, including, if you’re willing, the lengua taco. “We have an extensive menu and offer delicious food and exceptional service. Our prices are affordable, and we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy an item from our authentic side of the menu,” Mrs. Luna said.

Table Talk When veteran restaurant owners and a top executive chef who studied in New York combine their love for delivering quality seafood at a fair price, something special happens. Noah Griggs, chief operating officer and partner for Wharf Casual Seafood, has seen this first hand since joining forces with Chef Stephen Duggar, founder of The Original Wharf in Tallahassee, Florida. Griggs has taken the restaurant beyond its Tallahassee roots and is giving Montgomerians the chance to dive right into Alabama and Florida coastal favorites or enjoy an array of Southern favorites in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. “We bring a unique flair to Montgomery where guests have the option of ordering our entrees broiled, blackened or crispy. It’s great food in a casual setting. We have craft beer and wine that compliments the meal where you can enjoy it all on the outdoor patio with friends and family,” Griggs said. Be prepared to sit among a rustic, yet modern décor as you are welcomed with an eclectic mix of reclaimed wood and sheet metal that decorate the walls. The vibe of Wharf Casual Seafood is inspiring enough, but Griggs notes that the food alone will make you a repeat customer, and he is thrilled to welcome those who have recognized that their neighborhood needs a boost of flavor. “People come for the food, and they come back for the service. We want to thank people for their encouragement and support as we bring great food back to the Dalraida community. It is much deserved and long overdue.” For more information, visit wharfcasualseafood.com.
As residents of the South, or Alabama for that matter, we know ribs. Now, residents of Montgomery have a new place to go when an inevitable craving for ribs and all things barbecue hit. Tina Childs and her husband, Brad Childs, who own and operate Shane’s Rib Shack, have been busy carving out a new niche for those who want to indulge in these timeless Southern favorites, and Shane’s Rib Shack has already seen great customer influx. “Everyone loves barbecue and ribs. We wanted to bring great food, great service and a fun atmosphere for families. The area we opened in needed a great sit-down restaurant, and we hope to be able to serve everyone in Montgomery with a fun, family-oriented feel. It’s a place where we know you by your name, and you will enjoy the food,” Mrs. Childs said. From slow-smoked barbecued pork and chicken smothered in their secret barbeque sauce to baby back ribs you can pair with your favorite Southern sides, Shane’s Rib Shack is the new place to be for those who have long awaited the day when Alabama’s favorite dish would be taken to the next level. “Our food is outstanding, and we strive to give the best customer service around,” Mrs. Childs said. The food portions and price point are enough to have you coming back, but paired with great customer service, you can’t go wrong. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy our great food, and we look forward to building many longlasting relationships with the customers and community.” For more information, visit shanesribshack.com or call 334.593.6539.

A Cultural Experience through Alabama Goodwill Ambassador Program By Charlie Dunn
It might be one of the River Region’s best-kept secrets. For others, it’s become a well-known and almost legendary way for members of our community to give back. Since the time of World War II, Maxwell Air Force Base has been lending a hand to international students enrolled in the International Officer School at Air University (AU). What began as a collaboration between the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and AU, originally known as the International Sponsor Program, has now transformed into the Alabama Goodwill Ambassador Program that helps countless international students from over 80 countries better understand life in the state’s capital. The AGA program is not only a pivotal way for civilians to help students acclimate to life overseas, but it allows for volunteers to be introduced to new people and cultures and serves as a way to make long-lasting relationships that are fostered for years to come.
“Our AGA program has expanded from our early days when we began training French and British aviators, and as the world dynamic has changed, our customer base has increased. With approximately 85 countries involved, it’s a great cultural experience for our sponsors, and as they help people adjust to life here, lasting friendships are established,” said Captain Jessica Harris. As these international students bring their families here to Montgomery, the AGA volunteers go above and beyond to not only be a friendly face, but also help acquaint them with the school system, obtain a rental car, learn English, or find a home. With shorter programs of up to three months to the yearlong sponsorship program, the AGA volunteers serve as an integral component to helping those who have left home to live life in the U.S. For International Military Student Officer Clay Benton, he sees the volunteers’ role as one that helps make this a smooth transition as students are welcomed to our city with good ol’ Southern charm. “We need to help our students acculturate to the U.S. where many things are unfamiliar. Without the programs we have, they would have no support mechanisms. Our volunteers help relieve them of anxiety where many things seem foreign. We want our students to enjoy life in our country. The term ‘Southern hospitality’ exists for a reason, and every person that leaves here misses Sweet Home Alabama,” Benton said. At a core level, AGA volunteers help acquaint international students with living in Montgomery. On

a larger, broader scale, the volunteers help to foster an understanding of what life is like in our country, something that ultimately benefits our nation as misperceptions of the U.S. are debunked. “The AGA program benefits the whole country. The volunteers help leave lasting, good impressions about life in the U.S. The students’ perception of the U.S. will be formed factually by the time they spend in Montgomery, and people in the River Region have the opportunity to validate or invalidate anything negative that people from overseas have thought about the U.S.,” Benton said. Both Harris and Benton encourage people of the River Region to volunteer as a sponsor. Harris notes that the experience of being an AGA sponsor is akin to traveling, and without leaving your home; you are exposed to new walks of life, new customs and new traditions. Quite simply, it’s not only a way to help, but it broadens the volunteers’ horizons – and it’s all done solely through interacting, no financial obligations required. “The experience of volunteering helps to open different mindsets and evokes empathy to see someone else’s point-of-view. If you haven’t had the opportunity to travel, this program allows you to do so,” Harris said. Benton agrees, and he succinctly summarizes why people of the River Region should partake in such an amazing opportunity to give back while simultaneously being a part of the world at large. “You can travel around the world without leaving Montgomery. It’s a wonderful opportunity, and you can enrich your life. This is a great way to make an impact for the city, state and country, and it creates a lifetime impact on officers and most especially, the families,” Benton said. For more information about how to volunteer either short-term or long term, contact the International Officer School at 334.953.7613. NOV / DEC 2016 RSVP 51

DR. GARRETT KEVER Dr. Garrett Kever was born and raised in Springdale, Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and moved to New Orleans to obtain his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the LSU School of Dentistry. The blend of health care and artistry that dentistry provides attracted him to the profession. At LSU, he met his wife, Brenna, and the couple married in June and moved to Alabama in July. Dr. Kever says the ability to not only relieve pain, but to also increase overall health and even boost patient confidence and self-esteem provides him with incredible job satisfaction. He would like to thank his wife for always being so supportive and loving, as well as Dr. Dean McNeel who has been the biggest influence and mentor on his decision to become a dentist. Outside of the clinic setting, Dr. Kever enjoys playing sports, kayaking, hiking, cooking, going to the movies and working on his car or motorcycle.

It’s amazing and feels like family.” Julia jumped headfirst in getting involved with the community. She assists with lacrosse at the YMCA and has participated in multiple charity fitness events. After graduation, Nick worked as a forensic accountant before he and his wife purchased Super Suppers in the spring of 2011. They started the On a Roll food truck in December of 2012 and have been serving up deliciousness downtown for the past two years. “As a capital city with military bases, colleges and universities, and a rich civil rights history, Montgomery attracts an influx of folks with varied palettes and an appreciation for all types of food. Our food is a little bit West Coast, a little bit Southern and a whole lot of deliciousness.” But it’s the people he serves that really fuel his passion for providing stellar customer service. When he’s not making people smile with his cool wit and charm, Nick proudly serves on the board of the Family Guidance Center, and loves running, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

ANN BURGWIN FAULKNER You may say she’s a dreamer, and you’d be right. Ann Burgwin Faulkner is a Montgomery local whose dreams and creative spirit led her to create jewelry in her spare time. A graduate from Auburn University with a degree in apparel merchandising, Ann Burgwin interned at an internationally known modeling and talent agency in Nashville before moving back to Montgomery. Her handmade jewelry hobby turned into a full-time passion and Burgwin Studios was born, with 70 stores picking up her designs in her first year. Most recently, she opened her studio on Mulberry Street for retail to reach even more customers. Her success is due, in part, to her husband’s encouragement, her father’s business advice, her mother’s selfless help and her customer’s appreciation for unique items. It was hard for Ann Burgwin to leave a steady paycheck for an unknown income, but opening her own business has allowed her to find her purpose. She says, “I love getting to know my customers and creating custom pieces for them out of family heirlooms or special things such as antlers from a son’s first deer. I love getting to create for a living.” When she’s not designing jewelry, Ann Burgwin enjoys riding horses and being outdoors with her husband, Ike, and their three dogs, Copper, Dolly and Delta.
JOSH MOON Josh Moon never had a master plan or big dream of becoming a successful investigative reporter and political columnist. In fact, he chose communications as his major in college because it had the least amount of math requirements needed to graduate. He did enjoy writing and the media, finding inspiration from columnists such as Tony Kornheiser. He became a reporter for the Montgomery Advertiser after graduating from AUM over 14 years ago, and realized he was actually good at it. He even has the awards to prove it. On many occasions, his more popular columns can be found in publications as prominent as the USA Today and Sports Illustrated. He spent nine years working in sports for the Advertiser then shifted to investigative reporting and started a column that ran biweekly for six years. Josh recently left the Advertiser for the Alabama Political Reporter, a move that allows him ownership of his work and more flexibility. His column, now syndicated, will appear in a number of the state’s newspapers in the coming months. Josh’s opinions lean far left and either breed support or hatred with little in between, as his social media existence proves daily. However, he uses his writing to find the voices that need to be heard and uncover information that otherwise would never be released. When he’s not spending his time digging up juice, he can be found at his family cabin in North Alabama fishing and enjoying the lake with his girlfriend Stefanie and his dogs.

or their 63rd annual ball, the Mystic Society of Merrie Mimics celebrated a “Vintage Merrie Mimics” Saturday evening, September 10th, at the Montgomery Country Club. As one of the oldest mystic societies in the area, the ladies of Merrie Mimics are privileged to open each Montgomery ball season with the traditional “rolling out of the barrel.” This year’s theme transported guests to gorgeous vineyards with colorful landscapes. They were greeted at the entry staircase with romantic candelabras and later in the ballroom with wine barrels topped with elegant floral arrangements dripping with grapes among their petals. Mimicking the look of a fine merlot, and following tradition, the members of Merrie Mimics wore black dresses and dawned a disguise. The 2016 queen of Merrie Mimics entered the ball in a stunning red, offthe-shoulder gown, with a beautiful trumpet skirt. The band on the main stage, Norris Dates and Power Surge, entertained well into the night, while Brendan Crimi entertained guests on the terrace. Bryan Carter with Carter Photography & Design beautifully captured the evening on camera. Following the ball, the queen and her invited guests enjoyed a breakfast, given in her honor, at the Montgomery County Club. Photos by Bryan Carter / Carter Photograhy & Design NOV / DEC 2016 RSVP 67

ALL HANDS ON DECK Commissioning Ceremony of the USS Montgomery C-9 Cruiser
On September 10, 2016, elected officials from Montgomery County and the city of Montgomery joined the commander and crew of the USS Montgomery in Mobile for the official commissioning ceremony. Hundreds of proud Montgomerians joined them, along with Senator Jeff Sessions and his wife, Mary Sessions, who served as sponsor of the ship. At the chairman’s reception the previous evening, Commander Daniel G. Straub was presented by the city of Montgomery with the original bell that was on the 1894 USS Montgomery C-9 cruiser, to serve as the ship’s bell on her maiden voyage to her home port in San Diego. The bell will then be returned to Montgomery where it will be displayed at city hall. The commissioning ceremony was followed by a festive reception featuring the largest order of Chris’ hotdogs in the restaurant’s history and refreshing Frios pops in patriotic red, white and blue, as well as tours of the ship. The climactic moment of the ceremony came when Commander Straub called upon his crew to “bring the ship to life!” Immediately the band began to play, and white uniformed sailors eagerly marched into place on the deck of the ship. A brave salute assured the crowd that they would bravely man the ship carrying our city’s name in defense of our freedom.

Wintzell’s Rocks MANE’s Raise the Roof! Photos by DiAnna Paulk
The atmosphere at MANE on the evening of October 20th was reminiscent of a Hollywood movie set: perfect weather, high energy and a feast for the senses. However, unlike a Hollywood façade, MANE’s therapeutic riding facility, which serves those who have physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities, is a real place where horses change real people’s lives. Dedicated volunteers and staff, Wintzell’s Oyster House, The Whiskey River Band, and overwhelming community attendance made the evening magical and memorable! Guests were transported on flatbed trailers filled with hay and pulled by tractors for a short ride to the event entrance. Beautiful sounds of The Whiskey River Band’s country music and the delicious aroma of the grilled oysters enticed guests into the arena. Joe O’Hara, Wynlakes Golf and Country Club’s Chef
and party designer, created the beautiful centerpieces and sponsor Riverside Chevrolet garnished the arena with a 2500 diesel High Sierra pickup truck that guests longed for. Wintzell’s Oyster House prepared a fresh and fabulous feast including an array of grilled and fried oysters, fish, chicken and shrimp; bacon-wrapped shrimp, coleslaw, cheese grits and other Wintzell’s Oyster House favorites. At an additional ice-filled food station, Wintzell’s staff shucked raw oysters as fast as MANE advocates could load their plates. Back in the barn area, one of MANE’s certified therapeutic riding instructors introduced MANE’s fourteen extraordinary equine partners to party attendees. The holiday season brings about a certain magic that many anticipate with glee. Kids are anxiously waiting for December 25th to see if Santa fulfilled their wish list, peeking at their gifts under the tree and making their best guesses at what is under the wrapping paper. But the true joy of this magical season lies not in receiving but in giving, and below are 5 opportunities for you to give to those less fortunate right here in the River Region.
1.Teddy Bears for Kids It’s often the simple things that can bring the most joy to someone, especially a child. Teddy Bears for Kids is a donation drive to collect teddy bears that will be delivered to children at the local DHR, on pediatric floors at local hospitals, and at centers for abused women and children. Donations will be accepted through November 30th, and teddy bears can be dropped off at the following locations. - Southern Style by Design in Elba, Alabama - Colonial Insurance Agency, Suite 200 in Hampstead - Vintage Olive in the Peppertree Shopping Center - Hair in Mind on Zelda Road - Hometown Credit in Troy, Alabama
2. Christmas Clearinghouse A project of HandsOn River Region, Christmas Clearinghouse provides toys, food and clothing to around 10,000 local residents in need, 8,000 of which are children. This charity was formed in 1980 and partners with agencies, organizations and individuals to assist families in need during the Christmas season. Support CCH by “adopting” a family or making monetary donations, which are tax deductible and can be made in honor of specific individuals. For more information, visit handsonriverregion.org/christmas-clearing-house.
3. Common Ground Montgomery Christmas Store Common Ground Montgomery is an inner-city/urban youth ministry serving the Washington Park and Gibbs Village communities of Montgomery. Each year, a Christmas store is set up of donated new toys. This store allows parents and guardians the dignity of selecting and purchasing toys at an affordable rate. This provides kids the joy of receiving new gifts on Christmas that they may not otherwise get. To view more information and drop-off location and times, visit cgm.life/ christmas-store/.

5. Montgomery Humane Society 4. OneFamily Christmas Tree OneFamily is an initiative of Frazer United Methodist Church to expand the mission to care for orphans. This Christmas, you can bring joy to a few of the many children in Alabama’s foster care system by picking out a gift tag for a child and purchasing the requested gift (approximately $50). OneFamily will gather the gifts and deliver to DHR. Tag pick up is from November 11th through December 4th. For more information, contact Kelli Dasinger at lilbranch17@aol.com or visit frazerumc.org.
In the Know. In the Now. In your Inbox.
The stockings are hung by each dog run, puppy and cat cage with care. All the creatures are stirring, because they’re exciting you’re there! Beginning the first week of December, each adoptable pet has an individual stocking for visitors to fill with toys and treats. When that pet gets adopted, the stocking goes home with them. The Humane Society also offers gift certificates to cover an adoption fee for a family member or friend to adopt their new pet, and there’s even an “Angel” pet program, where people can sponsor a pet’s adoption fee. Also, between December 1st and Christmas Eve, stop by 2520 Berryhill Road (beside PetSmart) and have your Christmas presents wrapped by Humane Society volunteers. This fundraiser is a great way to take care of all your wrapping needs during the busy holiday season.

Alabama Sweet Tea Company was one of only 40 makers selected to participate in the 2nd annual Silobration, a three-day maker’s festival hosted by the stars of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper,” Chip and Joanna Gaines. The event was held October 6-8th at the Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco, Texas and it was full of shopping, games, food and concerts. The Alabama Sweet Tea Company was formed when Wes Willis, a musician, and Golson Foshee, a real estate developer, began an unlikely friendship and discovered their mutual desire to invest in their community and share their love of the South. While founded in 2015 and dreamed up many years before, the Alabama Sweet Tea Company’s origins can be traced back much further— to years of enjoying homemade sweet tea at family gatherings, lunch after church or simply around the dinner table. And suddenly there it was. Home. I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS BUT THEY TOLD ME I’D LOVE IT – EVEN MORE THAN WHERE WE’D LIVED BEFORE. SOON WE TURNED IN AND I SAW THE LAKE, A SWIMMING POOL AND KIDS PLAYING EVERYWHERE. OUR HOUSE WAS GREAT, BUT EVEN BEFORE I SAW IT, I KNEW IT WAS HOME.
