he Greater Montgomery Home Builder’s Association is bringing back the Parade of Homes with more than 50 homes on the tour with the central site being at New Park. We had so much fun adding this home and lifestyle aspect into this issue and hope that you will make plans to attend one of the three weekends in June. If you’re looking for some outdoor activities, where both children and adults can enjoy this beautiful time of year, this issue is filled with ideas. Riverbend Brew Fest, River Jam, Second Saturdays, farmers markets, riverboat cruises and Parents’ Night Out at United Gymstars are just a few of the things that will help you enjoy all our city offers. Not only are there several events that you will want to calendar and attend, this issue is also full of fashion and kitchen trends, cool musicians and young professionals adding culture and energy to Montgomery. This issue is our biggest yet and we are excited to have several new advertisers on board. The past few months we have had one of the best teams ever with two college interns, Jessica Klinner and Bethany Wilson, as well as a high school intern, Allie Wolf. All three of these girls have contributed so much to the last three issues and they are an absolute blast. We are sad to see them go and wish them luck on future endeavors. In closing, the girls here are RSVP have just one piece of advice—get out and embrace the excitement of this season.

here are plenty of reasons to be excited about warm weather: longer days, baseball games, blooming azaleas and lemonade. But if summer also gets you excited about fashion, then you’re our kind of girl! When the weather gets hot, it’s time to bring out the bright colors and bold patterns, and our local boutiques have all you need for a vibrant wardrobe upgrade.

High temps also mean you should put away that heavy foundation and soften up your makeup look. Danielle Poe, owner of Make Me Up by Dani, approached RSVP with a vision of gorgeous, natural makeup and chic ensembles for spring and summer. This vision is displayed on the next few pages, and she had our models glowing from the inside out. Inspired by a swanky soiree, consider this your inspiration for all your warm-weather fashion and makeup needs.

CENTRAL SITE June 13-14, 20-21, & 27-28 1-6pm

It takes a village, or several, to put on a successful parade; and By Kim Traff & who doesn’t love a good parade? Jessica Klinner The Greater Montgomery Home Builders Association (GMHBA) is about to host one of the biggest and best Parade of Homes we have ever seen with over 50 homes from 22 builders and eight villages. (Communities featuring at least three homes are considered a Parade of Homes Village.) Not only is the parade great for providing its builders the opportunity to showcase their best floor plan, craftsmanship, décor and newest technology available, but it also provides parade visitors with great ideas. One of the homes located in Woodland Creek was built by members of the GMHBA and was constructed with products produced or manufactured in the United States, lending its name, “The All-American Home.” We pledge allegiance to this home in all its American glory. The central site, located in New Park off Ray Thorington Road in Montgomery, will feature seven homes from five different builders. Now that is what you call a village! Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, New Park offers the appeal of country living while

only being a few miles away from city life. The neighborhood, developed in 2008 by Jim Wilson & Associates, truly creates a sense of community for everyone who calls it home. By using five different builders (Hugh Cole Builder, New Age Builders, Newcastle Construction, Mathews Development Company and D.R. Horton), New Park allows buyers to build their dream home on any budget. The developers pride themselves on offering a variety of styles that still have a neighborhood appeal. Homebuyers have the option to choose from a selection of floor plans or work with one of New Park’s preferred local builders to design their own. Though Jim Wilson & Associates are known for their retail developments (The Shoppes at EastChase and the Riverchase Galleria), the company has always had a vision for real estate. The first housing development built by the company was Wynlakes back in 1986. They also built the Rosemont Gardens neighborhood in Old Cloverdale. A lot of thought went into the development of New Park. The

company did not want their newest real estate project to feature cookiecutter homes and planned to create New Park based on the idea of a traditional neighborhood—familycentered and promoting a healthy lifestyle. With three brand-new schools and a state-of-the-art YMCA within walking distance of the neighborhood, Jim Wilson & Associates have executed their plan. But that’s not where the plans for New Park stop. With 1,200 acres of land, the budding neighborhood will continue to grow and expand its appeal for years to come. Other villages in the parade include Stone Park, The Waters, Woodland Creek, Sturbridge, Hampstead, Deer Creek and Breckenridge. The Cove, located in Wetumpka, is also a village. The next several pages offer a sneak peak of some of our favorite plans. Mark your calendar and be sure to tour these homes yourself. The official parade guide will be published with the May issue of Tri-County Homes and can be found at any of the parade homes.

the LIST LINDA J. GLEASON Linda Gleason, president of LogoLand Marketing, is a self-made entrepreneur. Linda says that her customers have made the biggest influence on her success thus far, and she has learned so much through each and every one of them. Linda previously worked for SouthernLINC Wireless and says that her sales manager, Zach McElvy, also made a big influence on her life, as he was an awesome leader and showed her perseverance. In 2008, after the birth of her daughter Anna, Linda had some health issues. While this was a major obstacle she faced, she believes God has truly healed her heart, and she prays for good health every day. This setback encouraged Linda to work even harder and helped her get to where she is today. “I love everything about what I do,” Linda says. “I love to shop for people and get to see customers profit from what we do, and it happens every day.” LogoLand works with many nonprofit organizations and is very active in the community. When taking a break from creating fabulous items for her customers, Linda enjoys spending time with her husband, Michael, and her daughter Anna. She also enjoys photography, playing golf, going to the beach, and camping. An interesting fact about Linda is that she is a twin and has 8 other siblings.

REV. DR. BRIAN MILLER Rev. Dr. Brian Miller didn’t believe he had a calling to be a pastor. In fact, he received a Bachelor of Arts in mass communications from Auburn University before deciding to pursue ministry. “I felt that I had nothing to share and certainly had nothing that others wanted to hear. However, I slowly began realizing that God isn’t reliant on my creativity. I simply get to tell and be a part of the best story ever told,” he said. Now as the senior minister at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Brian gets to use his calling to impact the lives of others. Upon leaving Auburn, Brian went on to earn his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry in Biblical preaching and church leadership from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Since then, Brian has served churches in Wetumpka, Mobile and Montgomery. Brian and his wife, Christina, have been blessed with four children: Brasher, Phoebe, William and Wesley. The couple and their children are very involved with school programs and can often be found participating in extracurricular activities in the community. Brian’s favorite part of Montgomery is its rich history. “In this year where we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the march from Selma to Montgomery, our shared history is on display. Our history should help us to be a unified community. We have come so far, but we still have much work to do,” Brian said. Brian loves movies and is a huge college football fan.

JORDIN PUTNAM Jordin Putnam never had to question his decision to pursue a career in cosmetology. His mom, also a cosmetologist, had a huge impact on his decision to enter the field. When he was younger, Jordin loved going to work with his mom to watch her in action and developed a love for cosmetology himself. He moved to the River Region after being affected by the storms in April 2011 that hit north Alabama. Shortly after relocating, he began working at GAB Salon in Wetumpka, and he currently holds a position at Olivia A Salon in Montgomery. Making the move to the capital city was a scary process for Jordin, but he got through it with the help of those around him. “From job hunting on first arrival to present, there are always going to be obstacles but never giving up is what has helped me— that and the Olivia family,” he said. “…Everyone I have come in contact with while at Olivia or here in Montgomery has been nothing but nice, and it reminds me of home.” Through it all, Jordin has found success in his career through the love and support of his close-knit family, his co-workers and the community. Jordin loves the personal interactions he gets to have on a daily basis with his clients. When he isn’t in the salon, Jordin enjoys spending time with his blue healer and Australian shepherd mix, Jethrowe.

SAMARRIA MUNNERLYN DUNSON, J.D.,CHC Samarria Dunson has been around the world and back again. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, Samarria attended both the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, where she studied comparative law, and the University of Alabama School of Law, where she earned a Doctorate of Juris Prudence. Her strong educational background, ceaseless work ethic and interpersonal skills, inherited from her mother and father, equipped Samarria with all the skills she needed to become the director of the Office of Compliance and Ethics at the Alabama Department of Public Health. “The thing that I love most about my job is the opportunity to educate and train staff on the importance of compliance issues. I enjoy knowing that my work has a significant impact statewide,” she said. Samarria and her husband, Kendall, enjoy traveling and spending time with their children, Kenneth, Kendall and Kennedy. Here’s a fun fact about the couple: they got engaged in Paris, married at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and spent their honeymoon in Rome and Florence. the LIST MARLA TAYLOR CROW Marla Taylor Crow’s career path has taken many turns through the years—each one leading to a bigger and better opportunity. After graduating from Prince Institute of Professional Studies in Montgomery, she worked as a freelance court reporter for 10 years, owned Taylor Reporting Service for five years, and now serves as an independent consultant with Rodan and Fields Dermatologists.Through her work with Rodan and Fields, Marla has been able to use her strong work ethic and passionate spirit to help clients meet their skincare needs and directly see the result of her work. “Our community has supported me with this new journey of almost two years, and I am so thankful that they have trusted me with their skincare needs. This job is truly a blessing, and I am totally passionate about it,” she says. Marla is also extremely involved in the community, working with organizations such as the Friendship Mission, Just Keep Smiling, Meals on Wheels, The Montgomery Humane Society, YoungLife and more. Though work and her community involvement keep Marla busy, she also enjoys running marathons, tennis, watching Alabama football and being with her husband, Mike, and their two children, Cade and Carson Ann. Together, they love visiting Lake Martin, Santa Rosa Beach and hiking in the mountains near their home in Highlands, North Carolina.

DR. KIMBERLY OGLETREE, D.C. Dr. Kimberly Ogletree always knew she wanted to do something to make a difference in the world. Upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology from Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana and earning her Doctorate of Chiropractic from Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Kimberly began practicing chiropractic care. She has been practicing in Alabama for eight years, four of which have been spent at Mission Square Chiropractic, where she is currently. Kimberly developed her passion to become a chiropractor when her father sustained an injury on the job and suffered complications that left him in a wheelchair for several years. Eventually a referral to a local chiropractor led to a treatment plan that facilitated his ability to walk again. Kimberly was very impressed with the physician’s knowledge of the human body. Kimberly’s mission is to educate the community about the spectacular benefits of chiropractic. “I want to help people unlock their innate ability to reach their full potential without the use of drugs or surgery,” she says. Kimberly is an active member of her community, and she is a member of First Assembly of God in Montgomery. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women. With the help of her twin brother, Kimberly is working on starting a nonprofit organization called Red Wagon, where the two of them will take actual red wagons and walk door to door in communities to collect nonperishable items to restock local food banks and churches. In her free time, you may find Kimberly at a family event, likely held at the Riverfront. Kimberly has a three-year-old daughter, Mckenzie, who is the absolute joy of her life!

AARON S. GRAFFIUS Aaron S. Graffius has lived in many parts of the country but he has called Alabama home for 19 years. Aaron graduated from Auburn University Montgomery in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and achieved his MBA from the university in 2004. Currently, he leads as the systems engineer for Maxwell Air Force Base’s Air University. However, all work and no play makes for a dull time. That’s why Aaron seized the role as Montgomery community coordinator for WAKA Kickball & Social Sports, an organization for coed adults (21 years old and up) to release their inner child. Leading the charge, Aaron has grown the league over 300% in three years using “inspired passion to foster a healthy, fun adult environment to spark social relationships and effectively give back to Montgomery’s River Region through local charities and volunteering.” Between spending time with his wife, Gretchen, 8-year-old stepdaughter, Breeze, and community volunteering efforts with Journey Church in Prattville and WAKA, Aaron is a busy guy; but soon his life will slow down slightly as he steps down from his WAKA position and looks forward to exploring more exciting and blessed opportunities. Aaron is involved in mission work, is scuba diving certified, enjoys Steelers & Auburn football and has completed two Tough Mudders mud runs and a half marathon.

AUTUMN LEWIS Autumn Lewis is a woman of many talents, and you’ve likely seen her planning stellar events at Central restaurant, or on television as the top finalist in season seven of “Hell’s Kitchen.” As the event director at Central restaurant, Autumn says that every day is a different challenge. “My job is part therapist, part interior designer, computer tech, bartender, fashion consultant, menu designer, party planner, you name it… nothing is outside of my duties,” Autumn says. After working a demanding job for many years for prolific music producer Tricky Stewart, Autumn says she owes him for everything she is today. “I learned that when under pressure, the most important thing is not to panic and instead try and find a solution,” she says. Although culinary school wasn’t Autumn’s first stop, once she enrolled, she never looked back. Prior to culinary school, she received a Master of Arts from Georgetown. She was on the path to becoming a professor and had a full ride to a Ph.D. program at Northwestern. While enrolled in the program, she says she experienced a “quarter-life crisis” and realized cooking and entertaining is what she enjoys most. While moving to a small town could make one feel like an outsider, the people of Montgomery have done nothing but welcome Autumn with open arms. “Bringing my talents to Montgomery has been a blessing, and the community has embraced me fully,” she says. Autumn is an avid yogi who loves to travel and is always hopping on a plane. As a former military brat, she lived in Spain while growing up and fluently speaks Spanish. She used to be a traveling speed-reading instructor, and she still sneaks in at least 30 minutes of reading a day, anywhere she can.

the LIST MIGUEL FIGUEROA As the executive chef at Kudzu Noodle Bar and the A&P Social in Cloverdale, Chef Miguel Figueroa loves nothing more than a clean plate. Miguel’s love of food and customer service was mostly inherited from his parents. “Growing up with such hard working parents that cared about their business, fresh products and community affected the way I saw food- and good food at that. The importance of knowing your community and offering quality food has been ingrained in me since my birth,” he said. After earning a degree in marketing and public relations, Miguel moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico to become a volleyball coach. His cooking career began in Orlando, Florida at the Portifino Bay Hotel at Universal Studios. It was there that Miguel sharpened his culinary skills by working in the hotel’s various restaurants, specializing in Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Miguel loves being a part of the up-and-coming food scene in Montgomery. “Montgomery is growing and being able to watch people support things that are a little bit off the traditional path, while also being able to support the more traditional spots, is inspiring,” he said. When Miguel isn’t in the kitchen, he enjoys building things out of pallets, browsing through IKEA and being with his wife, Mandy, and their four daughters, Mariana, Marley, Juliette and Kianna.

LEAH FARRAH “SUNNY” PAULK If you’ve spotted the mural on Montgomery Street that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Selma-toMontgomery voting rights march, then you’ve seen some of Sunny Paulk’s most recent work. Along with being a freelance artist, Sunny also serves as a graphic designer at the Southern Poverty Law Center. Through both jobs, Sunny enjoys being able to continually grow and improve her art. “I love that I get to do something different as an artist every day and get to jump from a computer to a sketch pad to an outdoor brick wall,” she explains. You can almost always find Sunny with a smile on her face, and she feels that treating people with respect, no matter whom they are, has had the biggest impact on her success. Growing up, Sunny would visit her grandparents in Old Cloverdale, and she always said that Cloverdale would be the only Montgomery neighborhood she would live in. Sunny loves the fact that she knows all of her neighbors, can walk down the street to eat at locally-owned restaurants and see a play at the nearby theater house or a film at the independent movie theater. Thankful that she’s been able to sell her paintings in Montgomery over the years, she feels this community greatly supports the arts. Starting her third year of Tai Chi at the Montgomery branch of the Taoist Tai Chi Society, Sunny feels that Tai Chi has improved many things about herself, inside and out. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her three dogs. She’s also an avid cartoon watcher, loves low-budget sci-fi movies and is addicted to “Hungry Shark Evolution” on the iPad.

CARLY MINOR Carly Minor is definitely a familiar face at one of Montgomery’s newest hot spots, Blackfinn Ameripub, where she serves as the sales and marketing manager. A graduate of Troy University, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in print journalism and public relations. Carly says that to achieve great success, one must take risks, just as she did by packing up her life and moving to Montgomery. Never regretting her decision and only moving forward, taking this risk has given her the opportunity to grow in her career. While working in a profession that allows Carly to be social and meet so many great people, she enjoys not only how it allows her to put people first, but also how it combines all her sales, marketing, public relations and hospitality skills into one profession. Carly says that her favorite thing about Montgomery is the people, who have been so welcoming from the beginning. “Every day I meet someone new, and it’s like meeting an old friend,” she says. Carly is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Emerge Montgomery. A lover of fitness and believing that living a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise is an absolute must, Carly enjoys running and any outdoor activities. She has also played kickball for several years in Birmingham and looks forward to playing with the Montgomery league. Carly classifies herself as a “foodie” and says she will always take the time to test out a new restaurant or prepare a new dish, which explains why working for a restaurant is her perfect fit!

MICHAEL CARSON Michael Carson, photographer and editor-in-chief of Shustring Magazine, can almost always be found behind a lens. Upon graduating from Auburn University Montgomery with a bachelor’s degree, Michael began his career working as a contractor and doing work for the United States government. Michael later began pursuing photography as a hobby and has now been a full-time business owner of MCarson Studios for 10 years. When asked who has had the biggest influence on his success, Michael was quick to respond, “God, my mother and father, wife and kids.” Michael says his Aunt Constance also deserves a special “thank you,” as she has been the financial investor in every business he has started. He is eternally grateful for his team members, Cocoa Denise, Megan Pence, Cici Bucheron, Kenya Crumble, Derricius Breon, Dominique Green and Cammy Davis, and anyone else who has helped him along the way. As a business owner, Michael’s favorite part about his job is being able to travel, meet new people and make his own decisions. Michael feels that Montgomery has heavily embraced him and supported him as an entrepreneur. “The people in Montgomery have shown support in the form of recognition and word of mouth… I love my city,” he says. Michael is married to April, and they have two children, Jasmine and Jaylen. During his free time, Michael enjoys spending time with his family and traveling the world taking pictures.

56th Annual La Fete Ball Photos by Richard Patterson of Village Photographers

urlap and mason jars adorned Montgomery’s Garrett Coliseum on April 18th as the ladies of La Fete presented their 56th Annual Ball-La Fete Gets Footloose. Plans for this year’s ball started this past summer as board members gathered for a lake retreat. Throughout the year, the ladies held various meetings and social events with the ball theme. The theme was AllAmerican with a mint and burlap rustic color palette. This year’s winter party was no exception to the ball’s theme, and a wonderful party decorated with mason jars and hay bales was held. To set the ambience for Saturday night, members of the Stage Scenery Committee transformed Garrett Coliseum into the prom scene from Footloose. As guests arrived, they entered through a lighted tent with a mint-colored chandelier. Once inside, the guests could stop at the bar and grab a drink before the tableau began. The stage was set with a custom-made backdrop with Footloose written in faux neon lighting to match the sign from the movie. The dance floor was black and white and had a large LF, representing La Fete, in the center. The centerpiece décor included tea lights in mason jars hanging from the chandelier, along with a balloon drop upon completion of

the dance finale. Guests were welcomed by the Reception Committee, Charles and Pam Bierlair, Macon and Susan Chandler, Craig and Laura Duncan, Jill Ellis, Donald and Kimberly Lewis, Brad and Julie Long, Ken and Tina Nixon, Adam Ross, Ben and Stephan Tomlin, and Landius Wilkerson. A highlight of the ball is always the dance choreography by the ladies of La Fete. This year, each dance group was inspired by a different genre of music: rock, country, hip-hop and pop. The board members danced to the theme song from Footloose using both the Kenny Loggins and Blake Shelton versions of the song in a mash-up. Costumes were selected to reflect each genre of music. The tableau finale was set to Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” with the queen and her daughter joining in the final dance. The queen, who made her entrance to the song “Chandelier” by Sia, wore a beautiful sea foam-colored gown adorned with iridescent crystals, set off by a diamond necklace the board members gave her. Her crown was adorned with many crystals, and her elegant crystal mask completed her glamorous look.

The Pub Deep-Rooted Tradition

I

By Catherine Calligas Photos by Nick Drollette Photography 78

RSVP MAY / JUNE 2015

n a city teeming with steak and seafood chains, Charles Anthony’s at The Pub is one of only a few locally-owned restaurants that has stood the test of time. The Pub has been a staple in the Montgomery dining scene for decades. And while various owners have left their mark on it, current owner Charles Anthony Kamburis, Jr., has turned it into one of the most successful and thriving restaurants currently in the capital city.

Like many of The Pub’s former owners, Charles Anthony grew up in a closeknit family in Montgomery’s Greek community. He believes his attraction to working in the restaurant business may be in his blood, as his grandfather worked in the dining industry, and he has two uncles who own restaurants in Birmingham. After graduating from Auburn University in 2000 with a degree in political science, Charles Anthony purchased The Pub when the restaurant was still located in its Montgomery Mall location. By April of 2005, Charles Anthony had built and moved The Pub to its current location near EastChase on Chantilly Parkway. The new building is significantly larger than its predecessor and boasts a covered courtyard as well as a private dining room that can accommodate up to 48 people. Perhaps the most noteworthy change from the Montgomery Mall location is the atmosphere in Charles Anthony’s

restaurant. He gives much of the credit for the stylish ambience and decor to his mother, who helped decorate the new building and outfit it with antiques. And while the current location may be much more elegantly decorated, Charles Anthony has purposely created an atmosphere for both the casual diner or those seeking a more upscale or special-occasion dining experience. Everything at The Pub is done in house, including all seasonings. Steaks and fish are hand cut by Jessie Williams, known as Mr. Jessie, who is 76 years old and has been with Charles Anthony from the beginning. Older Montgomery natives may remember him from the days of Dale’s Penthouse, Mr.G’s and other fine establishments. The Pub’s meals are generous in size and come with both a salad and side item, and there is a vast array of appetizers and desserts to choose

from. The signature crab claws are a favorite of many diners, and the dessert menu features such decadent items as chocolate mocha pie and key lime pie. When he’s not behind the scenes ensuring that restaurant operations are running smoothly, Charles Anthony can often be found dining with The Pub regulars who have become friends over the years, enjoying either the restaurant’s signature snapper or the split beef tenderloin, often with his favorite side of steamed broccoli. Charles Anthony’s at The Pub is open Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. They are closed on Sundays with the exception of their Mother’s Day Brunch in May. After a ruthless battle of words between the coaches to win Wade’s affection, the soul singer from Dublin, Texas decided to join Team Pharrell. “I feel like it was really pretty special,” Wade said. “I was his first contestant on his first season.” The special connection between Wade and Williams was showcased week after week, and Wade found himself as the last representative of Team Pharrell on the show. However, Wade was eliminated in the quarterfinals, just two weeks shy of the finale. But for Wade, there was no real defeat. After finishing up “The Voice,” he wasted no time getting back to his normal life. While elimination from the show may have been a setback for anyone else, Wade took it as an opportunity. The day after his departure from the show, the soul singer hopped on a plane back to Texas and began his post-show life by doing what he does best: performing. “I played that night, and I’ve been basically on a stage ever since,” he said.

Before landing a spot on the Emmy-winning singing competition, Wade was gearing up for the release of his newest album, “The River.” But when the show came knocking, he temporarily put his touring plans on hold to embrace the opportunity of a lifetime, knowing he could easily pick up right where he left off once “The Voice” was over. “I was fortunate to basically be doing what I did on the show before the show. Then as soon as I was done, I had my team in place and an idea of what I wanted to do, and I just hopped right back on it,” Wade said. Wade’s ability to seamlessly glide back into his pre-show life reveals his dedication and hardworking attitude. It also shows the direct influence of Williams, who taught Wade how to showcase his talents and connect with a television audience. “As of right now, I have the most active and original career of the folks who were on the season, and I think it’s because of the way Pharrell helped me

represent myself on television,” Wade said.

Cloverdale and the Riverfront as his favorite visits.

Before “The Voice,” Wade was playing to a couple hundred people every week. After, he transitioned to playing in front of thousands in just one night. One such performance led him to Montgomery to open for Patti LeBelle during a celebratory concert for the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march. Though the stop was a short one for Wade on his multi-city tour, it proved to be a very special performance for the Texas singer and his band, No Civilians. They even wore tuxes in honor of the special celebration.

“Hopefully, we’ll be back soon with the release of our next album, which we’re not sure when that will be, but we’ll keep you posted.”

“It’s the kind of thing you dream about being a part of,” Wade said in an interview with AL.com. “You’re a part of something that isn’t just music and isn’t just a show— it’s history. Those are the moments, as an artist, that you live for.” Wade’s stop in Montgomery was only a small part in his full U.S. tour, but he still managed to take a minute between interviews and rehearsals to explore the capital city, naming Aviator Bar, Sinclair’s in

The Perfect Pair Set in the 1980s during a hidden era of segregation, “The Perfect Pair” by Perry Varner is a fictional novel, spanning three decades, which stylishly narrates the lives of its characters as they dare to dream. Varner, an Alabama native and celebrity designer and stylist, moved to a small apartment in Manhattan in 2011 and spent four years observing the American fashion industry. He socialized with fashion insiders and attended exclusive events, all the while on a journey of self-discovery and realizing the complexity between people of color and the fashion industry. Inspired by his observations of this relationship, Varner’s book gives readers insightful stories that ever expand the chronicle of the civil rights struggle. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march and the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery bus boycott, the release of “The Perfect Pair” is impeccable timing. This story is about forgiveness, accountability and the harsh realities of the human experience while pursuing the American Dream, but more than anything it’s about the undeniable tenacity of the human spirit. To purchase a copy of “The Perfect Pair,” visit www.nayberrypublications.com. Author Perry Varner can be contact at perryvarner30@gmail.com. 86
