arranged—they’re real and they’re genuine. From wall to wall, the theatre beams with an audience who has waited for months to take their seats and experience the magic of Disney right in Montgomery. Sherman couldn’t be happier.
A Producer’s Perspective
“I think that the quality of the work that this theatre does probably deserves this kind of response,” Sherman said. “It’s always gratifying that people want to come and see the show. It makes us quite joyful here when we are close to sold out before we are open because that means that we know we’re going to delight tens of thousands of people.”
n 1989, the world was introduced to a beautiful, redheaded, cartoon mermaid named Ariel. Her ambitious and curious nature led her on an adventure of a lifetime to discover a new world. Today, her story continues to enchant both young and old in the form of theme park attractions, movie sequels and a musical. The latter has landed right here in Montgomery, Alabama to help us escape from the summer heat with a little trip under the sea.
As the lights dim on the theatre and rise on the stage, a man stands at the back of the auditorium, but he isn’t watching the action of the play— he’s watching the audience. This man is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s producing artistic director, Geoffrey Sherman. Sherman, now in his 10th season with ASF, has done all he can with the production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. He’s picked the play, cast the roles and has worked out every kink during the rehearsal stage. As soon as the theatre doors open on the first night, the play belongs to the audience. Every slight pause in the action meant to be filled with laughter, gasps or tears are no longer forced or
Over the years, many Disney classics have come alive on the ASF stage, including Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan and last year’s outstanding production of Mary Poppins. These timeless tales transcend age and resonate with many thanks to their charming characters, classic songs and heartwarming stories. “The success we had with Mary Poppins made me look around at the other Disney epics, and I ended up with Disney’s The Little Mermaid because it was telling an interesting story,” Sherman said. Everyone knows the story of The Little Mermaid, or at least
they know the story that Disney tells in the beloved 1989 animated film. While the theatre version of the story holds on to the original magic of Ariel and her friends, it dives deeper into the humanity of the characters and their relationships, specifically that of the mermaid and her father, King Triton. “It isn’t just the story of a Disney princess,” Sherman explained. “It’s the story of a father and a daughter… This new version, which has taken the basic ideas of the original story from the movie, has pulled together a whole lot of the funnier and more moving moments of the original story and brought them front and center. You’re not just coming to see the cartoon, but you’re seeing something that actually has a very, very big heart.” As Sherman stares out at the many faces in the crowd, he can rest easy knowing that he has, once again, helped create something magical come to life on stage.
Under the Sea with Ariel As the lights dim on the theatre and rise on the stage, a woman donning a purple bikini top and sparkly mermaid fin waits anxiously behind the curtain. This woman is Michelle Pruiett, who is portraying Ariel in ASF’s production of The Little Mermaid.

RSVP JULY / AUG 2015
Pruiett has a long and diverse list of professional theatre experience, including roles in Jersey Boys, Cats and My Fair Lady. But there’s one role that has constantly drawn her back in through the years: Ariel. As a redhead herself, Pruiett always felt a strong connection with Ariel growing up. Pruiett appeared in the original Broadway version of The Little Mermaid, but only as Ariel’s understudy. It wasn’t until the show went off Broadway that Pruiett was cast in the leading role in the U.S. Regional Premiere at the Tuacahn Center for the Arts in Ivins, Utah. And now she is reprising the role at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. “She was my favorite, favorite Disney character,” Pruiett recalled. “I’m actually a redhead so being a little redheaded girl to see a Disney princess who looks like you and things like that was huge for me. It was just a great story. I think anybody can relate to the fact that it’s about a young woman who’s trying to find out who she is and a strong bond between father and daughter and family.” Pruiett moved to New York City straight out of high school to pursue her dream of working in professional theatre. After a few years of training in dance programs, acting schools and voice lessons, Pruiett started auditioning and landing roles in New York City and beyond. To this day, when she isn’t performing, Pruiett
continues to train in order to improve upon her skills. Although Pruiett has played the role of Ariel before, this time around will be just as exciting and challenging with a new cast of talented actors, exciting stunts and an incredibly talented production team. Every play staged at ASF is built from the ground up. Every costume, prop and set is made in house by a talented group of artists and designers. The Little Mermaid’s spectacular scenery will include a fully three-dimensional ship, complete with sails and cannons, and a very large moving octopus known as Ursula. The production will also feature lots of flying as characters move from the sea floor to the surface. “I think [ASF’s] vision is so beautiful… It is a cartoon, but they’re finding humanity and honesty in it,” Pruiett said. It’s this humanity that makes the ASF production of The Little Mermaid stand out. The Shakespeare Festival’s ability to take a play and create a visually and audibly stunning experience is unmatched in the southeast, or better yet - the country! If you think you know the story of Ariel, think again. Grab a ticket and allow Pruiett and the rest of the cast to make you a part of their world.

We’re Kind of a Big Deal By Kim Traff • Photos by Darren Freeman
High school graduation parties were all the rage this past May, and RSVP helped three seniors, Coleman Taylor (Saint James), Marshall Griffin (Trinity) and Nolan Fields (Saint James), know that they were “a big DEAL” to many. Understanding that seniors are eager to enter the adult world after graduation, Good Fellas Gaming in Birmingham transformed the Aviator Bar Hangar into a casino that was off the chain. Rolling up in a stretch limo, these “three best friends that anyone could have” strutted down the red carpet and entered the casino party where they were greeted by over 100 of their closest friends. The roulette and craps tables were filled with eager teens cheering on the dice and hoping the numbers would roll in their favor. And while the slot machines and black jack tables were the most popular, those looking for a challenge bellied up to the poker table for some tutorial games and strategic planning. Saza

provided pizza by the slice and Chris’ Hot Dog’s father and son team, Theo and Gus, prepared hot dogs with all the fixings! Nancy’s Italian Ice was on site with six flavors to be sure these seniors kept their cool. The Image Masters Photo Booth was a fun way for guests to take home a piece of the party. In preparation for the party, the moms (Jacki Walton, Jamie Fields and Donna Griffin) assembled pictures of each stage of their boys’ lives and it was shown on the big screen throughout the event. As the party concluded, the high rollers cashed in their chips for tickets and dropped them in top hats for a chance to win incredible prizes including cash, gift cards to multiple restaurants, stores, theaters and more. All three boys will be attending The University of Alabama in the fall where they pledged Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

The Montgomery Bridge Club’s Heart of Dixie Tournament
As the largest and most financially successful tournament in the history of the club, this year’s Heart of Dixie Tournament attracted players from all across the South. The Montgomery Bridge Club hosted the annual tournament on April 30 through May 3, 2015 at their new location across from the governor’s mansion.
By Peyton Flowers • Photos by: Jessie Barksdale
Founded in 1965, The Montgomery Bridge Club is a nonprofit sanctioned duplicate bridge club governed by the American Contract Bridge League (www.acbl.org). After selling their building on Mulberry Street, which had been their home since 1972, the club relocated to 1103 South Perry Street in January of this year. Alabama’s First Lady Dianne Bentley served as the honoree of the first game of the tournament, aptly dubbed “The First Lady’s Charity Game.” In the name of good fun and a great cause, two worthy charities were selected as the beneficiaries of the charity game: The Sunshine Center and The Friends of the Mansion. ServisFirst Bank hosted a fantastic cocktail reception in their beautiful downtown lobby for all club members, their spouses, out-of-town players and the sponsors on Wednesday night before the tournament. Planning for the four-day tournament started in June 2014, but its success is due, in large part, to all the remarkable sponsors who supported the tournament. The club is so honored and grateful to the astounding group of sponsors who aided in this year’s event: Jackson Hospital, The James W. Wilson and Wynona W. Wilson Family Foundation, Jennie Weller Catering, ServisFirst Bank, Pickwick Antiques, Sterling Bank, Zoe’s Kitchen, Buffalo Rock Pepsi, Thompson Insurance, Liger’s Bakery and Kwik KopyShop. Before the first game, Mayor Todd Strange welcomed guests to Montgomery, acknowledged the sponsors and introduced the first lady. Accompanying Mayor Strange were other local dignitaries: Joe Riley, president and CEO of Jackson Hospital; Janet McQueen, vice president of marketing and development at Jackson Hospital; the Honorable and Mrs. Eugene Reese, representing the Wilson Family Foundation; Carl Barker, president of ServisFirst Bank; Michelle Baker, vice president,

commercial banking officer of ServisFirst Bank; Alan Worrell, president of Sterling Bank, Forrest Neely, former vice president of Sterling Bank; Karen Sellers and Melanie Beasley, representing The Sunshine Center; and Steve Bricken, representing The Friends of the Mansion. Quadrupling last year’s count, a total of 245 tables were in play over the course of the tournament. Players from four different states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi) were in attendance and Alabama players represented 21 different cities in our great state. Each day, guests had many delectable eats at their disposal, many of which were donated by local establishments such as Liger’s Bakery, Gigi’s Fabulous Foods, Zoe’s Kitchen, Jennie Weller Catering and Buffalo Rock Pepsi. If you’re interested in beginners bridge lessons, contact Bob Lake at bobbalinks@gmail.com or call The Montgomery Bridge Club at 334.416.8014. The Fashion SEEN 2015
By Alicia Gaulker • Photos by Darren Freeman
The Fashion SEEN isn’t just about showcasing the latest trends for high school juniors and seniors; it also teaches students how important it is to give back. On Sunday, May 3, the class of 2015 and 2016 Pop Photography senior models strutted down the runway at The Warehouse at Alley Station. Laura Handley of Centsibly Southern Chic worked with local boutiques such as Splurge, Francesca’s and Lotus to provide apparel for the models. The Fashion SEEN featured street style, color blocking, denim, mixing prints and Southern styles from top brands such as Judith March. Makeup for the models was provided by Stephanie Thrasher Savoie, and choreography was provided by Derekius Chambers.
3.
Stephanie Carter Campbell, owner and designer of Southern Fashion House and Judith March, attended the event and reception, which was catered by Jennie Weller Catering. She greeted VIP ticket holders and donated 20% of her sales to the event’s charity - Children’s of Alabama. Selecting Children’s of Alabama as the charity recipient was not a hard decision due to one special woman named Paige Kendrick. Paige was one of the first senior models for Pop Photography. After being diagnosed with cancer, Paige received all her treatments at Children’s. Paige is now a fulltime student at Alabama State University and is cancer free! If you missed this event, stayed tuned for more details in 2016. The Fashion SEEN was such a huge success it will now be an annual event!

CHANDRA TARVER Chandra R.Tarver proves that it is possible to be a successful, driven career woman and a mother. Currently the principal of The Blue Print Group, a public relations and crisis communication agency, Chandra is also the owner of Something Borrowed Weddings and Events. Planning weddings is one of Chandra’s favorite hobbies, but starting a business was one of her biggest obstacles; however, it was an obstacle that proved to be a blessing in her life. She says her motivation to be successful flows from her daughters, Creshema and Kevenshay, her grandparents, parents and her relationship with Christ. When asked what she loves most about her career, Chandra said, “I am a people person. I enjoy meeting with clients and assisting them with fulfilling their dreams. As if Chandra is not already active enough, she is also a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and a volunteer for various River Region charities and nonprofits, specifically those that help young girls. MEAGAN ANDERSON After an internship in New York with the well-known makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin, Meagan Anderson decided to return home to Prattville where her husband is a football coach. Currently, Meagan works at Bella in Montgomery as a makeup artist with Laura Mercier cosmetics. She says that Kevyn Aucoin has impacted her as an artist by inspiring her to help people feel beautiful in their own skin. “One of the best parts is helping a client to see herself as a beautiful and modern woman, exuding happiness and confidence, all with the stroke of a brush,” Meagan says, “It is my greatest wish, that the love of Jesus is reflected in my work and how I make others feel.” Meagan enjoys helping people look beautiful at their special events, such as weddings and photo shoots, and speaking to organizations about her passion of makeup artistry. Spending time with her husband, Chad, and their children, 6-year-old Annabelle and 3-year-old Calhan, is the highlight of Meagan’s life. Chad and Meagan teach seventh grade Sunday school at church where Meagan also sings in the choir. As busy as life gets with work and football, Meagan still finds time to travel, paint, sing and research makeup and fashion trends. Meagan’s favorite thing about Montgomery is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and she feels strongly that people should support the theatre and the local artisans in our community.
PAUL LAMMON Paul Lammon is not your average pastor. As campus pastor of Grace Life Bar Church, a church breaking the mold of a traditional church building, Paul holds services inside Rock Bottom American Pub in Montgomery. Paul is also the owner of ProLine Detailing located in Millbrook, known for its specialization in many things that you cannot get at the average detail company. Starting his own company was difficult, but Paul says he was able to achieve his success due to the faith his wife of six years, Brittany, placed in him from the very start. Paul also attributes the community to his success. “Without our clients trusting us with their vehicles, we would not be around today,” Paul says. He is currently in the plans to open a second location in Montgomery near the Pike Road area. Paul is also working with James, aka Tha Tardybarber, on an event to give back to the community, which will include free food and free hair cuts. His love of Montgomery comes from the people and all the positive things going on in the community.

the LIST BROOKE POAGUE Brooke Poague isn’t just a hard-working family and divorce attorney in Wetumpka; she’s a well-known, beneficial member of the community. Involved with the Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce, the Elmore County Food Pantry, Wetumpka Athletics and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Brooke stays pretty busy but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Upon graduating from Jones School of Law in Montgomery, Brooke was influenced by her father, Rance Killen, and her business partner, Clyde T. Bailey, III, to pursue her dreams and find passion in her profession. Clyde and Brooke opened up Bailey and Poague, LLC and has never looked back. Brooke says, “It’s always wonderful when clients come by a year after their case has been closed and we are able to see how wonderful many of them are doing, and it’s very uplifting to know that I played a part in that.” Being able to form relationships with all of her clients and maintain a service that is unique to each individual case are two of the biggest benefits of her firm. Classy advertisements, give-aways and word of mouth has helped Brooke’s firm become as successful as it is. Brooke also has a passion for traveling with her 8-year-old son, Grant. She says that “travel is life’s greatest teacher, and I love to travel with my son.” But together they also love to find local adventure in Wetumpka, such as the Coosa River and Swayback Trail. Brooke also just entered the world of container gardening and loves it.
EVAN MILLS Evan Mills finds his passion in creating things from nothing. It took a few years and several jobs to finally discover his calling as a stylist. After traveling the world as a high tenor in a southern gospel group called New Generation, using his charismatic personality to sell cars, working in the office of Colonial Bank and fixing cars as a mechanic, Evan discovered his love of creating beautiful hairstyles for his clients. “I love that I have the power to bring people out of depression. If someone sits down in my chair with a frown on their face, I have the ability to have them leaving with a little pep in their step and a smile on their face, ready to take on the world that they were hiding from when they came in,” he says. Evan’s love for the community and the people in it is shown by his donations to silent auctions and charity events. Photo shoots, fashion shows and special events are some of his favorite ways to contribute to the community. Evan says that his favorite thing about Montgomery is that “there is a place for everyone . . . You just have to know where to look.”
ALEXIA HENIG As a little girl, Alexia Henig wanted to open up her own women’s clothing store, and she made her dream a reality in 2013. Now Alexia is the owner of Splurge, a women’s boutique here in Montgomery. A bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration on marketing from Mississippi State University gave her the knowledge she needed to become a small business owner. Her grandfather, parents and husband, Michael, gave her the support and faith she needed to take that first step in starting her business. “My biggest fear was if I would be able to juggle being a mother, wife and store owner. It has definitely been hard, but I have learned how to balance work and family life. Fashion is my passion. Doing what makes me happy each day allows me to be a better mom and wife,” Alexia says. Her favorite parts about her job are making people feel great about themselves and getting them to step outside their comfort zone. Alexia is a member of Landmark Church of Christ and Les Dames. Michael, Alexia and their daughter, Finleigh, enjoy going downtown for Second Saturdays and going to the splash pad. On summer weekends, they go to Lake Martin and ride Michael’s “go fast boat” as her daughter says. Alexia also enjoys teaching local high schoolers hurdle lessons since she went to MSU on a scholarship for track. Splurge is relocating to The Shoppes at EastChase in midJuly, so stop by for all your summer must haves!
CALEB HAWK Caleb Hawk found the two loves of his life simultaneously. He had thought of moving to Los Angeles until he fell in love with “this cute little blonde girl at work” named Hannah. They made their home in Montgomery and that is where Caleb found his second love- love. Caleb owns Two Hawks Production, which gives him and Hannah the chance to help others see how beautiful their love is. “Seeing the tears in a groom’s eyes when he first sees his bride is one of the small but beautiful things that drive us,” Caleb says, “The greatest feeling is hearing the reactions from our clients after they receive their videos.” Caleb feels it’s the thriving creative souls in the area that make him proud to call the city of Montgomery his home. Caleb and Hannah work hard at what they do to ensure their clients get the most of their wedding day. Not only is Caleb a small business owner, but some would also say he is a comedian. People tell Caleb he has the funniest Facebook statuses to which he responds by saying “It’s about as cool as being the best skier on a bunny slope.”

Iron Tribe 101 By Andy & Peyton Flowers • Photos by Brooke Glassford/Colorbox Photographers
There are two types of people in this world: those who make working out a priority and those who don’t; but when it comes to working out, two are better than one. Studies show that couples that hit the gym together are more likely to meet their goals, but what happens when your significant other has a completely different mindset than you when it comes to fitness? We couldn’t be more different when it comes to our idea of fitness. Our joint trips to the gym have usually ended in disaster, but that all changed when we enrolled in an Iron Tribe Fitness 101 class. Iron Tribe is for everyone and here’s the proof. Read each of our accounts to see how two fitness opposites viewed the same course.

FROM ANDY: Having been a member of a CrossFit gym for years, I often wondered what the buzz surrounding Iron Tribe was about. I mean how different could it really be? With curiosity finally getting the best of me, Peyton and I finally decided to give Iron Tribe a fair shot. I found that even coming from a CrossFit background, Iron Tribe makes everyone participate in their 101 course, which is a required introductory class where you build the foundation to become a regular member. The coaches teach you the correct form for every movement you will experience after 101 is over. This in itself is a huge advantage over other gyms that have the tendency to be somewhat sink or swim. After the first 101 class, I felt like I had learned more than I did in months at a CrossFit gym. Along with teaching you the proper technique, Iron Tribe’s highly trained coaches give you a lesson every class on proper nutrition. The coaches focus on the Paleo style of eating paired with a healthy workout routine. Paleo might seem foreign at first, but when Peyton and I started eating like this it was like a light bulb came on for me. I even found out I was lactose intolerant from changing my eating habits. At the end of the day, Iron Tribe has been the best fitness experience of my life. They take the time to make sure everyone is informed and on the same page. You get the one-on-one time of a personal trainer with the competitive advantage of participating with a large group. If you are tired of the same fitness routine or feel hopeless when you look in the mirror, I would recommend everyone give Iron Tribe a chance to change your life.

FROM PEYTON: My view of this type of fitness has always been polluted by the annoying Instagram posts of ripped palms and weekly meal prep, accompanied by 30 different hashtags about the #paleolifestyle. I have never been interested in this seemingly high-intensity workout and my competitive side usually only comes out at Target on Black Friday. So when we signed up for Iron Tribe’s 101 course, I was not expecting much from myself.
workout and know that it was healthy. The focus on eating right and proper movements let me know that Iron Tribe is really all about your well-being. By the third workout, I could already tell a difference in myself. There are modifications for every move and I gained confidence with each workout. The healthy competition that developed between Andy and I made each class fun, and I’m still bragging about the night I beat him by two reps.
The only emotion I felt when I first walked into Iron Tribe was sheer terror. I started to sweat before the workout even started. I gave a wide-eyed glance at Andy and I could see it right away…he was already hooked.
After the 101 course, I learned that my fear of failure has been standing in my way for too long. I was surprised that I was even able to finish the course and even more surprised by how much I improved from the first workout. If I can do it, Iron Tribe is truly for anyone.
I was eased by the friendliness of the coaches and their knowledge of not only the workout moves but also the nutrition aspect. We received a Fuel Manual that eases you into the recommended Paleo diet and this was so helpful as we changed our eating habits. Over the course, I ordered meals from their Inner Fire Grill, and they were excellent! It was so convenient to pick up my lunch after a

It starts with Iron Tribe 101.
And ends with you in the best shape of your life.
Read Joe’s story, then come write your own. My story is probably similar to others - I let myself go, gained a significant amount of weight and would start exercising to do something about it - only my attempts were frustratingly temporary. After receiving several mailers describing the Iron Tribe philosophy of personal instruction, athletic community and nutritional advice, I decided this was something I needed. The biggest thing on my mind (pardon the pun) was to lose some weight - a lot of weight. Specifically, my goal was to lose 70 lbs while getting into shape. The Iron Tribe coaches were very knowledgeable not only in physical instruction, but in the nutritional aspects as well. In fact, Iron Tribe takes it to the next level offering diet support and arranging delicious meals that are delivered for pick up at the gym. I typically order breakfast and dinner each weekday. The results have been beyond my expectations - in the first five months of the program I lost 65 lbs. My strength and stamina have improved tremendously and I feel like I have turned back the clock 20 years. I have now been a member of Iron Tribe for 17 months and have maintained my weight loss and become even stronger. I no longer worry what the scale says as I now go by how my new clothes fit. I believe joining the Tribe was one of the best things this 52 year old has ever done.

Stepping Stones…
5 Stone Expanding its Reach, Step by Step By Catherine Calligas
In 2009, Garrett Cook had yet to experience the adventure of taking a mission trip to a foreign country. As of June 2015, he has made 15 trips and will be making two more before the end of the year. The background of this story begins in 2009, when Garrett founded 5 Stone with the goal of assisting others on foreign mission trips. 5 Stone is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is a Christian-based organization, but not affiliated with any particular denomination. On one mission trip, Garrett met Pastor Johnny, who was the director of the Jehovah Jireh orphanage. Garrett describes the moment as “surreal” and says he instantaneously knew that he wanted to be of greater service and work alongside Pastor Johnny. Within three months, Garrett was back in El Salvador working on projects such as building a children’s area in a church, replacing a leaking roof, remodeling the home of a family in need and sponsoring a remote village by providing seed and fertilizer after storms had wiped out their existing supply. 5 Stone’s most significant project, however, is its work with the Jehovah Jireh orphanage, which houses

27 individuals ranging from ages 7 to 26. Along with donating supplies, 5 Stone brings in instructors to teach skills such as cutting and styling hair, or training the residents to sew and make their own clothing. Currently, 5 Stone’s main contribution is its farm project, “Provision of Our Father,” which provides more opportunities to teach various skills. The bulk of their time and resources are devoted to the success of this endeavor. This project began as a vision of self-sustainment for the orphanage as they continuously faced financial struggles as monetary donations declined. After acquiring three acres of land that would serve as a farm and would be able to provide food for the children as well as a source of revenue, the orphanage immediately benefited from the bountiful food already in existence on the land. An abundance of mango trees, a small grove of coffee trees, four sapote trees, a couple of avocado trees and other fruits and edible flowers are found throughout the property, and the orphanage has planted banana and plantain trees as well.
In April of 2013, 5 Stone partnered with Crucified Life Ministries of Georgia and brought a team to El Salvador to implement the first phase of the farm - a chicken coop designed to house 336 egg-laying hens. At full capacity, this coop may produce 250 eggs a day. Current consumption at the orphanage is approximately 50-60 eggs per day. At local prices, this amounts to a little more than $2,500-$3,000 per year, but by harvesting their own eggs, the orphanage benefits from savings as well as the opportunity to sell the excess production in various markets. Those funds are then used for farm operations and, most importantly, to supplement the orphanage’s operating budget to further decrease reliance on outside monetary donations. While 5 Stone is nearing its goal of being a self-sufficient orphanage, there is still a way to go. They need to raise the funds to implement a second chicken coop and put in two tilapia tanks. The total cost of these projects is estimated to be $8,000. The additional production will allow Jehovah Jireh to contract with local organizations in order to sell any excess food, thus further enhancing the ability to be self-sustained and relieving the stress of receiving funds for food, clothing and other necessities. Anyone interested in making a monetary donation or going on a mission trip to the orphanage is always welcome. A portion of sales made by Blackfinn Ameripub at the RSVP release party will be donated to 5 Stone to further its efforts. If you are interested in becoming more involved with 5 Stone, would like more information or to make a donation, visit www.5stone.us or email garrett@5stone.us.

Blue Sullivan has been one of the oldest members of the RSVP family, providing articles for the magazine since the magazine’s second issue back in 2008. But his work with RSVP is just a part of a distinguished two-decade writing career. He’s also been a regular contributor to a litany of other magazines and periodicals and has interviewed a host of celebrities including Johnny Depp, Jerry Seinfeld, Barbra Streisand and Jeff Bridges. A Montgomery native now living in Los Angeles, Blue returns to our pages in a new capacity: as a published author. Recently released by Limitless Publishing, Your Ex-Boyfriend Will Hate This is a dating advice book for single ladies, which offers an entertaining and empowering new slant on the genre. RSVP spoke to Blue about the book’s inspiration, origins and uniquely important message. 60

RSVP: I think you’re the first staff writer from RSVP to become a published author. How does that feel? Blue: I feel honored. I’m so proud to have worked for RSVP and so thankful to Kim Traff, RSVP’s owner and publisher. She gave me a chance and has been one of the biggest supporters of my work ever since. She gave me the confidence to write this book and was one of the first people I thought of when it came time to write the acknowledgments page. I honestly don’t think this book could’ve happened without her. RSVP: How did you come up with the idea for the book? Blue: It started with an article in RSVP a few years ago. I asked Kim if I could guest author our regular dating advice column “Singled Out” for an issue, and she kindly said yes. I enjoyed writing it so much that it

singled OUT prompted me to think more about dating books aimed at women. I looked at the popular books at the time, stuff like Think Like A Man and He’s Just Not That Into You, and I just thought, “they’re going about it all wrong.” RSVP: How did you think they were getting it wrong? Blue: Those books were putting the focus on how to “land” a man. I thought about how simplistic, condescending and even chauvinistic that message was. I thought about all the amazing women I knew who had suffered through terrible relationships with undeserving men because they’d been taught all their lives that “single” was a dirty word, especially as you got older. RSVP: As a single woman, I definitely get tired of people asking me why I’m still single or telling me, “oh don’t worry, you’ll find someone.” Blue: Exactly. When I was single, I almost never had anyone ask me that question, or suggest that I was somehow less worthy because I was single. So why on earth should women be held to such a humiliating, dehumanizing standard? It’s honestly shameful to think that idea still survives anywhere in 2015. RSVP: The press release describes Your ExBoyfriend Will Hate This as a “dating book that isn’t really about dating at all.” What did you mean by that? Blue: I meant that my book isn’t about how to “get” a guy. At its core, it really isn’t about guys at all. It’s about exploring who you are, why you choose the people you choose, what you want in a relationship and what kind of person can truly make you happy. It’s about putting the focus where it belongs: on you. RSVP: You quote quite a few scientific studies about relationships in the book. Why was that important? Blue: When I was doing research for it, I found there is often a big gulf between why we think we make certain choices and what actually can influence them.

RSVP JULY / AUG 2015
For instance, a study by Match.com found that women rated men wearing the color red in their profile photos as more attractive, even when compared to other pictures of the exact same men. RSVP: That makes it sound like we don’t have any control over who we choose. Blue: Actually, while our initial attraction for someone may be more random than we think, our ability to succeed in relationships isn’t random at all. Relationship success is a skill like any other. It gets better with practice and, most importantly, by learning from our mistakes. As I note in the book, “experience without introspection yields no wisdom.“ RSVP: That’s encouraging to hear. Anything else we should know about your book before we go? Blue: Well, it’s available on Amazon for about $12. And anyone who buys one is welcome to send it to me in LA (with their address and a few stamps), and I will sign it and mail it back. Or if you just want to chat with me about the book or your own dating war stories, I am happy to do that, too. Your Ex-Boyfriend Will Hate This is available now via Amazon. Table Talk
By Angela Hardgrave • Photos by Nick Drollette I have a confession to make. I have lived in the Montgomery area for 14 years and, until recently, had never been to the Old Cloverdale historic district. I had no idea what I was missing! The streets are lined with families out for a stroll, friends chatting and folks enjoying good drinks and great food—which is what led me here. Tucked away in The A&P Lofts mixed-use development are two dining experiences that are worth checking out. The A&P Social and Kudzu Noodle Bar may share a kitchen, a head chef and may both feature Southern cuisine but each restaurant is unique. The owners of both locations are Harvi Sahota and Anna Lowder. They said, “We are thrilled to have two great places that highlight the quality and creativity of the New South here in Montgomery. We believe in the importance of ‘neighborhood’ and sense of place, and Kudzu and The A&P Social add to that belief. We love seeing tourists, 64
RSVP JULY / AUG 2015
locals and neighborhood regulars enjoying these places.” My first stop was The A&P Social, which is built on the site of a former A&P Grocery store. The dining room is sophisticated without being stuffy, and each member of the staff, which is more like a family, is attentive and accommodating. Their team’s commitment to quality is evident. The food is definitely Southern—like pimento cheese, deviled eggs and fried chicken—but updated in unexpected ways. Using local ingredients is key. They look to the Gulf Coast for fresh seafood and the Black Belt for high-quality meats and produce. Many of their jellies, coffees and liquors are also local, and the grits featured in the Shrimp & Grits menu item are from Oakview Farms in Wetumpka. I sampled many signature dishes that evening and not one was disappointing. The Gulf Oysters were succulent
which turned out to be my favorite. Where else can you find slow roasted pork and collards paired with bean sprouts, nitamago (a soy-marinated egg) and ramen? Dessert was a heavenly fried steamed bun with sesame dipping sauce. The genius behind the cuisine of both restaurants is Chef Miguel Figueroa. Figueroa was born in Puerto Rico but has recently made his home in Montgomery. He inherited his passion for food from his father and grandfather, who always cooked with the freshest ingredients. Even now, Puerto Rican favorites like
and perfectly dressed, the Tuna Tartare was beautiful, the Harvest Salad was fresh, and the Chocolate Boozey Sundae was a sweet end to an incredible meal. I wish I could have tried some of everything. I see a return trip with friends in the near future. The next evening, I returned to Cloverdale but this time for a trip to Kudzu Noodle Bar. This was a totally different experience yet no less amazing. Born out of a love for ramen—real ramen with its rich broth and airy noodles— and a desire to bring Asian cuisine with a Southern twist to Montgomery, Kudzu Noodle Bar opened its doors in February 2015. The name and the slogan, “Deep Rooted in the South,” both come from the infamous Japanese plant slowly taking over the Southern states. Like the plant, Kudzu may be expanding its borders. Sahota and Lowder said, “We’ve been approached to open Kudzu locations throughout the South, and we’re scouting locations now.” The menu is budget friendly but also wildly original. I tried a Bulgogi Bun, a steamed bun filled with rib eye and chili sauce, and then the Tonkatsu Redneck Ramen,
fried pork, rice and beans are his go-to dishes at home, a home he shares with his wife and four daughters. Figueroa attended Le Cordon Bleu, but his greatest culinary influences have been Chef Leo Maurelli, III, Chef Andrew Litherland, Chef Juan C. Mercado and Chef Massimo Fedozzi. Figueroa loves living and working in Montgomery, where he and his food have been heartily welcomed. Whether you choose The A&P Social or Kudzu Noodle Bar for your next evening out, you won’t be disappointed. Just bring a love of good food, good people and good fun and be ready to experience Southern ingredients and Southern charm at its finest.

In a recent survey by a few of our favorite RSVP beer drinkers, and not just the beer nerds, we came to discover that the top four attributes of a good bottle shop are 1) staff (personal and knowledgeable), 2) consistent quality stock, 3) atmosphere (we all love a good social atmosphere when we are talking beer) and 4) price points, duh. However, most would agree that if the first three qualities exist, some don’t even mind paying a higher price point. Lucky for you, Filet & Vine has all four of these attributes as well as the largest wine and beer selection in Central Alabama. Capital of Dreams Triathlon On the last Saturday of May, 322 people from 19 different states jumped off the deck of the Harriott II and into the Mighty Alabama River! Some may have questioned their sanity, but no one questioned their athleticism as these triathletes swam, bicycled and ran their way to the finish line in the 3rd Annual Capital of Dreams Triathlon. The triathlon featured a sprint race with a 400-meter swim, 20k bike and 5k run, as well as an intermediate race with a 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run. Both courses took participants downstream on the river, on the Birmingham highway and throughout historic Downtown Montgomery before crossing the finish line at Riverfront Park. This annual event has been drawing more participants year after year, and this year’s count tripled its original size. The race is one of only two known triathlons that feature a start from a boat in the water, which is a great attraction for participants. This year the race was sponsored by Baptist Health and presented by Montgomery Multisport.
