The Brown Thomas A/W collection
“Autumn/Winter 2017 is a season which showcases the re-emergence of high-octane glamour and strong femininity. From hero tailoring to soft romance and more, it really is an incredible season ahead,” says Shelly Corkery, Fashion Director for Brown Thomas. This season realises a very special dream for Ginan Abbas as she launches a first capsule collection for her label Golden Stitch. _ __ ___ The collection not only represents Ginan’s talent as a fashion _ _ __ designer, it also brings to life Ginan’s creative passion for fabric design. This unique combination creates Ginan’s signature that can be found in each piece that carries the Golden Stitch label. Born in Baghdad, Ginan comes from a long line of master tailors. Many a happy childhood memory for Ginan was spent playing with the fabric scraps left over from her parent’s tailoring business in Baghdad, igniting a passion that made her become the dress and fabric designer she is today. When Ginan arrived in Dublin two decades ago, she was immediately fascinated by the environmental differences between her old and new homes. Having to adjust to a Western lifestyle was a challenge for Ginan but also a bonus, as it presented her an opportunity to enhance her ability to master variations of colour and also the female form. “My dresses are designed to make a woman look amazing and feel beautiful,” she says. For autumn, the Golden Stitch colour palette mixes abstract dandelion georgette prints in grey, taupe, red and blues with a splash of amber yellow. The grey and black clock dandelion printed crepe plays so well over the gold-infused silk, adding a slight shimmer as you move.

Top tips to choose the
handbag

This is a pretty straightforward one – the part of your body where the bottom of the bag sits will be accentuated. So if you have small, boyish hips, a bag that sits on your hips, like this Gionni messenger bag, €55, will make your shape look more feminine. If you have large hips, try a bag which sits at your waistline, accentuating the taper of your waist and making you look slimmer. Try to choose a handbag which complements your own shape. To do this, think about your overall shape, then buy handbags with opposite features. For example, if you are tall and slim, choose a handbag which is rounded and slouchy. Think about your general style. If you usually wear casual clothes, going for a very formal handbag style is not a good idea. A casual bag like this backpack from Liberty works really well. confidential with Sinead Kennedy When deciding which Irish style maven’s wardrobe we most wanted to peruse, TV presenter Sinead Kennedy was top of our list. Andrea Byrne reports
W
e’re big fans of Sinead’s fun, fearless, nonconformist and wholly unapologetic sense of style. Thankfully, the affable TV presenter agreed to indulge our little snoop, opening up her killer wardrobe to reveal a real gem of a bargain buy, a ‘dangerous’ designer shoe addiction and a 17-year-old leather jacket that she still wears! “I just like to wear what I like, when I like,” Sinead says of her sense of style. “I don’t think I fall into one particular category. I wouldn’t be very girlie but that’s not to say that some days I don’t wake up and want to wear a nice dress. I like having fun with clothes and I don’t take it too seriously.” BIGGEST SPLURGE: My shoe collection. I own more than I will ever need! If you’re including trainers, I’d say I own between 40 and 50 pairs of shoes. The thing is, I don’t have a decent handbag, because I’m all about the shoes. It’s quite a dangerous habit and probably the reason I will never have savings, but I do get the wear out of all of them. In terms of shoe style, I’m a woman of extremes: I am either in really casual flat trainers or five-inch heels. There is no in-between. But I have to wear high ones as I’m only 5’ 2”, and between my husband and my TV husband Marty, who are both tall, I need the height injection!
BEST BARGAIN: I’m not a great bargain hunter but I love this embroidered jacket that I picked up backpacking around Central America while on honeymoon. I bought it at a market in Nicaragua for the equivalent of €15. It’s really well-made, the stitching is impeccable. It’s wonderful to have something that is completely unique. MOST TREASURED ITEM: My wedding dress. I say that, but I did actually sell it. It was the second dress I ever tried on. I knew I wanted something with a vintage vibe and something sequinned. I googled those words and it came up. It was made by Jenny Packham. I tracked it down and once I tried it on, there was no talking me out of it. I look back now and think, yeah, I could have bought another dress that worked better with my shape but I just fell in love with that dress. Anyway, like I said, I sold it. I know it might sound odd, but while it is my most treasured piece of clothing, I am never going to wear it again. I would have hated to see it hanging in my wardrobe, what’s the point? I wanted someone else to get the pleasure out of wearing it and not have to pay the same price! So it’s treasured in my memory and plus I have all of the photos.
I don’t have a decent handbag, because I’m all about the shoes. It’s quite a dangerous habit and probably the reason I will never have savings!
AN OUTFIT YOU LOVE THAT EVERYONE ELSE HATES: Probably my leopard print suit. I love it. I have a lot of suits from Scribe of London, I love the cut of them. It’s such a personal service and I love that its founder, Pat Morley, is Irish. Everything is tailored to perfection. I have suits in black, burgundy and blue, and I just wanted something different. It’s not for everyone. I have a tartan suit too that I wore one night, and ended up on Gogglebox as the discussion of the night. But to be honest, if I like something, I couldn’t care less. It doesn’t bother me at all. I like having fun and I don’t take it too seriously.

Irish style icon? Blanaid Hennessy, owner of Folkster. She’s so damn cool. I remember her saying to me once, ‘Why keep your good stuff for that event, we should be wearing our good stuff every day’. It’s so true, but I just love that she is so glam, but really cool and funky with it. It’s pure boho fabulousness.

International style icon? I do like Olivia Palermo as she has fun with clothes, but she is a clotheshorse, so I suppose she could make anything look fabulous. There are a lot of international bloggers who I follow, and whose style I love.

FAVOURITE PIECE OF JEWELLERY: That’s an easy one. My tanzanite engagement ring. I saw that ring years before we got engaged and I had said to Conor, whenever you plan on popping the question, I want this one. And in fairness to him, when the time was right, he went back in to that shop to pick it up. I absolutely love it. It’s quite delicate, and you’re not supposed to wear it every day, but I do! FAVOURITE ACCESSORY: I love hats! I only have a few, as I’ve such a small head so I find it hard to find ones I like that also fit. They work wonders too when you’re having a bad hair day, especially when you’ve as much bleach in your hair as I do. THE OLDEST ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE: Apart from a few bits my Mam has given to me over the years, my oldest item is a burgundy leather jacket. I worked in a petrol station when I was 16 and I saved up one whole summer to buy it, so I have it 17 years now and still wear it. There are no rips, no tears, no real damage, apart from a bad zip. I remember years ago getting stuck in it, and going home and my Dad having to peel me out of it. I broke the zip and have never fixed it. In saying that, I don’t think it would close even with the zip fixed! THE NEWEST ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE: Metallic high-top converse bought for $65 in L.A, but they sell them here too! They’re comfy and I can wear them with everything. I’m going on holidays shortly with Himself and I love being able to throw on a boho maxi dress with a pair of comfy Cons.
Favourite retailer? Most of the time, it’s a toss-up between Topshop and Zara. I also love Folkster. Online or in-store? I am usually an in-shop shopper, as I am very quick with it. I know instantly if I like something or not. Also, I’m not sure I’m a candidate for online shopping as I am really bad at sending stuff back if it doesn’t suit. Neat Freak or Clean Freak? Complete neat freak. The trousers are all folded, and black is with black, denim is all together. My wardrobe is always very tidy, and as a result it’s very easy to find what I want. Also, I hate hoarding. I declutter every two months. I do a charity clear out. If it’s good quality, it’s the charity bag, if it’s wrecked, it’s the bin. I am trying to do it to make space in the wardrobe but not as a way to go out and buy more. We always have more than we need.

Up-cycling:
Make a deconstructed
shir t
Have you tried to up-cycle some tired pieces you don’t wear any more? All over the catwalks this season we’ve seen oversized cuffs and deconstructed shirts, so we asked stylist and costume designer Joanne O’Brien for her take on the trend, by showing us ‘one she made earlier.’ “Everything is hand-stitched,” says Joanne “so anybody can give it a go.”
Step 1 To make the shirt, first turn it upside down on the stand, if you don’t have a tailor’s dummy put it on a chair. As you can see in the image, the collar of the shirt becomes a stiff cut-out waistband that gives a beautiful figure-hugging shape.

Step 3 Then, cut off the cuff. The shirt here is a double cuff but a single cuff would work just as effectively.
Next, cut off one sleeve. Make sure to cut it a good 3cm from the shoulder seam. Then you can roll that extra 3cm in to create a hem. That way you don’t get a frayed edge from the cut off fabric. 18 fashion

Place the cut-off cuff into the armhole where the sleeve has been removed and the hem stitched in.

Stitch the cuff in place. This now becomes a minimalist cap sleeve that ties in wonderfully with the ‘collar’ waistband, created earlier when the shirt was turned upside down.
Steps 7 & 8 Gather the second sleeve into whatever curved shape you like and stitch. Likewise, any excess fabric at the back can be twisted into place and stitched. Always remember to stitch from behind so that you don’t see stitching.
Start to fold and stitch into place all the excess fabric that bags out from the front of the shirt. Play around until you see shapes you like and stab stitch them into place.

“You can be inspired by a photograph that already exists, but creating your own inspiration gives Palette essentielle another dimension to the process – it gets much more exciting.” This is how Lucia Pica, Chanel’s global creative make-up and colour designer, describes her inspiration for the iconic company’s autumn-winter make-up collection, which began with a Californian road trip. Her idea was simple: to experience afresh the lights and colours of the outside world, creating a completely new starting point for her creative process. From the dawn mists and sun-dappled coastline to the city lights and gritty noir feel of downtown Los Angeles, Lucia Pica embraced the serendipitous creative possibilities afforded when the journey becomes the destination. “I wanted to make my own mood board; to be inspired by what is happening in the moment,” says Lucia Pica. Heavy metal For autumn, there isn’t one eye-shadow colour trending above others, but there is one key texture – metallic, in all shades. We’re not just talking about a dab of silver around the eyes, either: Metallics were swept across the lids in a statement of strength that mirrored the girl power message from the runways. Protect your skin
Like it or not, the calendar will soon turn to autumn and cooler days. “The change of seasons is always a stress on the skin and body in general,” said Neelu White, skincare specialist. “I often see people dealing with skin conditions at this time of year. Many subtle things can really affect your skin.” Here are some of Neelu’s tips to restore and maintain skin tone and definition. of peptides that promote resilience and improve skin firmness.
Don’t skip sunscreen
Switch from lotion to cream When you switch your seasonal wardrobes, it’s a good idea to do the same with your skin emollient. Use creams, which are typically more moisturising, instead of lotions, which don’t provide as strong an oily barrier to reduce water loss in the skin. For my more mature clients, I recommend Le Mieux Bio Cell Rejuvenating Cream (€115) – it’s very effective. Though we’re less exposed to sun in winter, that doesn’t mean we can stop protecting ourselves from its rays altogether. Wear an SPF each day and go for a rating of 30 or higher. For those who spend a lot of time outdoors, whether working or if you plan a winter skiing holiday, an SPF of 50 or higher is even better. Better still, wear a hat with built-in sun protection in the fabric.
Take your vitamin C
Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that slows the rate of freeradical harm, those unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C may also
reduce hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure, by brightening the skin. I recommend Le Mieux Vita C Clear Skin Pads (€55). These exfoliating pads gently clear clogged pores, smooth out fines lines and improve radiance.
Always use an eye cream
In the summer, our make-up tends to be lighter, highlighting any fine lines and wrinkles, dark circles and sagging around the eyes. Look for a dedicated eye cream as your regular moisturiser is too heavy for the fine skin in this area and can contain ingredients that may cause sensitivity. Squeeze a penny-sized amount onto your ring finger and tap four to five dots on the bone around the eye and dab it in gently. Don’t place any cream on your upper eyelid or too close to the lower lashes.
Get some shut-eye
The restorative power of sleep should never be underestimated. When you sleep, your body produces growth hormones which help cell and tissue repair. It also makes new collagen which keeps your skin strong and elastic. Many skin disorders have a mind-body connection, so they can often flare up when you are stressed or over-tired.
