Petit Avenue, the Irish baby and children’s online shop, is bringing a touch of celebrity style to parents with their exclusive ranges of nursery furniture and clothing. Founder, Joanne O’Brien, was inspired to start Petit Avenue after returning to her native Dublin with her husband and baby twins. Joanne quickly realised that she couldn’t get the brands that she had loved in the UK, without paying often high shipping and waiting for a long time, so she decided to bring these sought-after brands to Ireland herself. “When we moved back to Dublin, I was shocked by how little choice there was in the Irish market. I spotted a gap in the market for quality nursery furniture and clothing, so I went for it and set up Petit Avenue. “Our cot-beds have been a great success as they are built to last. Many styles transform from a crib to a double bed so your little one will never outgrow them,” Joanne says. The company has grown during the pandemic, as people moved online to buy nursery furniture, accessories and baby gifts. Joanne has taken this opportunity to add strollers to her online store. petitavenue.ie

COVER While trends in interiors change and evolve, they do so at a different pace to fashion– some are popular for years rather than merely a season. Take the Nordic trend; it has been with us for years now and yet continues to surprise and delight. There are also key colours that become the big thing for decorating our homes. This season, dusty pink, navy and teal are all still winners, as seen here in our cover pic from Next Homes. The new metallics are more muted than in previous seasons, feeling more sophisticated. The brass is matte and the silver has a less shiny look than chrome. Luxury materials such as pewter, marble and velvet all mix together beautifully to create fine decorative details.

IKEA has our key trends to watch out for in the coming months. As we move from a strange summer into an autumn and winter that many of us will be determind to enjoy in our homes, a bit of a décor refresh could be just what we’re looking for. Check out these IKEA looks! Highland Heritage: Inspired by countryside landscapes and natural elements, this trends blends utility, warmth, earthy tones and unrefined textures. The look focuses on sustainable materials and invokes a sense of hibernation and ease. Street Style Nomad: Inspired by city dwellers embracing small space living, this trend incorporates contemporary design with block colours, clean lines and statement pieces, exuding a relaxed urban coolness with affordability, functionality and adaptability at its core. Scandi Fusion: Blending modern and traditional Scandinavian styles with minimalist influences, this trend pays homage to classic design with a range of cultural influences bringing a bespoke look and feel. Eclectic Traditions: Creating a nostalgic, generous and inviting atmosphere, this trend embraces a sense of extravagance and sets the perfect ambience to make memories to last a lifetime. The looks include several new IKEA collections – SAMMANKOPPLA, DEKORERA and RÅVAROR – as well as numerous new products.
The world has been shifting on its axis and our homes are more central than ever. Launching its new autumn-winter collection, Neptune has taken note of this changed landscape and their new collection of living and dining furniture centres on versatility. The Ardingly is a drinks cabinet on the surface, but can be so much more. Built to adapt as you and your home change, it can serve as a TV cupboard, a larder, a desk or even a dressing table. Another versatile piece is the Sunbury sideboard. Based on 18th and 19th Century kitchen safes, the Sunbury makes a fine sideboard. It could also become a sweet little kitchen larder or find a home near your dining table, filled with crockery and glassware. The new tall and slim glass-fronted Shepton cabinet continues the theme of timeless designs that can evolve alongside your home. Filled with crockery and glassware, it fits right in a kitchen, but it could become a larder or a linen cupboard, too. The Shepton’s deceptively deep adjustable shelves could also see it find a home as storage meets bookcase in a living room or home office. The darkened oak finish of the new Blenheim coffee and console tables are a nod to their antique origins, and their airy elegance strikes a balance between old and new. A new addition to Neptune’s upholstery collection sees the Caspar armchair re-imagined into two and three-seater sofas which can fit a small space. Neptune’s new autumn winter collection is on sale now at neptune.com, at Neptune Belfast and in Neptune partner stores in Dublin, Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Limerick, Mayo and Fermanagh.
Tasty homewares at TK Maxx From high thread count to the plushest soft furnishings, TK Maxx has some great pieces for the new season. With something for every room all under one roof and fresh deliveries arriving all the time, you can nab something new on every visit.

Aaffair family
Mimi + Martha is a new online shop and community of 50+ Irish craftspeople – weavers, ceramicists, paper-crafters and more – who work aspects of sustainability into everything they do. It is the brainchild of mother and daughter, Mary Keogh and Martha O’ Brien Keogh. Here, Martha talks about setting up Mimi + Martha in these difficult times
F
ounded by a mother/daughter duo, MIMI+MARTHA is the new go-to platform for home décor enthusiasts looking to discover the collections of some of Ireland’s leading makers. The online store has already seen popular designers join the MIMI+MARTHA collective including Ballyshane, Olannmor, Emma Larkin Designs and Glint Glass.
Where did the idea for Mimi + Martha come from?
I guess it all stems back to the very start of lockdown. My Mom and I had been talking for a long time about doing something like this but it just didn’t seem like the time was right. Then of course lockdown happened, and we had some time to really create something true to our values and we could really give it the time and energy that we wanted.
Do you have a background in craftsmanship or the creative industries?
I come from an arts background – opera singing actually – and my Mom comes from an interior design background. Between the two of us, we have a flair for design.
Does a creative background make it easier to start a venture like this?
I think so, because we’re both really into design and interiors. We are both on a journey to a more sustainable way of living. So we had the interest and our backgrounds left us well equipped for this, too. Of course, it is also just is something we are passionate about.

Did you worry about setting up a new business during lockdown?
Absolutely. But I think that the reason we didn’t hesitate was that we suddenly had this space where we saw all of these amazing designers who have been locked out in the current climate. That aside, there’s been a real shift towards people wanting to be more sustainable in the way they’re living. Maybe they’re not able to access that way of doing things or not quite knowing how to go about it. We have these two different generation views on that. My Mom often says that ideas of sustainability are much more of a learning curve for her generation, and that it’s much more real for my generation. So we support designers who have this amazing flair for creating things that people would love in their homes, but also bring in sustainable elements in a relatable and modern way that doesn’t feel pressurised or threatening.
Does social media play a big part in Mimi + Martha? It does and that’s been quite a learning curve for both of us. Business is now online and a lot of people are moving online, but a lot of the brands that I would have supported prior to lockdown would be Instagram businesses and like a lot of these smaller shops, we work remotely – I’m based in Dublin and my Mom is in Limerick.
Are you offering a new platform to craftspeople who operate on social media? I think so. The thing is, there’s a lot of pressure on makers and designers and also our customers to buy more consciously now, but
it’s quite hard to know what that means – what is eco-friendly? What is this thing made from? Where is it coming from? So we’re trying to take a little bit of that guesswork out of it for both sides. We can ask our designers what are you making, where are you making it, where are you getting your materials, and we can share that process with customers so they can make their own more informed decisions.
But we’re putting Irish makers to the forefront. I think Irish people like to support local makers, especially at the moment; people are really keen to support smaller, more independent businesses. We’ll see how it goes; we may be growing internationally, and we have a couple of international makers in the mix at the moment.
Is there a certain assurance that what is on your site is genuinely sustainable?
What’s it like to run a business with your mother?
Actually, part of that is that different items have different sustainable meanings –because if you’re making a wool throw, it’s different to somebody who’s making ceramics or somebody who’s making jewellery. Rather than just a buzzword about sustainability, we offer transparency and honesty, and it’s also really interesting to see the process and understand the journey from the raw materials, the work that goes into it before it ends up in your house. There are so many fascinating independent designers and makers. They are doing really interesting and modern and innovative things.
Is everything on Mimi + Martha locally made?
Well, it’s early days! So far, we’ve had so much fun; we get on really well anyway, but I think something that works really well in our dynamic is that we don’t live near each other, so we have our own space. We’ve also split off parts of the business to take ownership of. We have different skills, so we’re not overlapping on the same things. When we have differing opinions, we’re quite good at working it out, so we’re happy enough so far.
Have you been busy so far?
It’s been good; we’re live for just two weeks now, but the interest so far has been great. We’re building a community now and we’ve got big plans! mimiandmartha.com
At the moment, we’re trying to put the Irish makers at the forefront of what we’re doing, but we want to make sure that we’re staying inclusive. So if somebody comes to us from the UK or Europe or whatever, and they’re doing something that fits in with our brand ethos, or what we think our customers would like, or is something that we love, we would consider it. Everything has to be something that we love ourselves, or that we’d put in our own houses. Home & Interiors

Romance O Holiday
It may be the year of holidaying at home, but that doesn’t mean our homes can’t reflect more far-flung destinations. Interior stylist Alannah Monks has some suggestions to bring the great outdoors into our homes

ne of the greatest sources of interior inspiration has always been travel. It’s impossible to not be inspired by the way others live, what different cultures consider beautiful and how it reflects in their interiors. Unfortunately, 2020 has not been a year of great travel, but we have most certainly got more to grips with our homes. With so much time spent indoors taking stock of our interiors, it’s time to take some of that travel inspiration and inject it into our indoor life. I teamed up with DFS to curate living rooms inspired by some of my favourite globe-trotting styles to show you how you can pull inspiration from anywhere on the globe and put it right into your décor. Whether you’re drawing inspiration from across an ocean or a continent, there are a multitude of ways that you can emulate international interior design trends from pieces available right here in Ireland.

East Coast Americana The style of the East Coast elite has long been an admired and emulated aesthetic, and with the rising popularity of Netflix reality shows such as Million Dollar Beach House, the trend shows no sign of slowing down. The beaches of the Hamptons and Cape Cod may seem like the furthest flung reaches of Earth at the moment, but there are a few ways to bring the American beach house into your own home.
Simple shapes and maximising comfort are at the centre of a coastal living room; choose plush pillow back sofas such as the St Ives for that laid-back luxury. The feather-filled cushions of the St Ives teamed with its cotton upholstery provide a soft setting to unwind, while it’s classic roll arm shape and neat skirt give it a timeless look lifted straight from American Coastal design book. Style it with throws in luxe materials such as mohair, fur and wool to carry the coastal comfort throughout the cooler months. Home & Interiors

Seascape inspired colour palettes are also imperative to the coastal look. Mixing shades of blue against a backdrop of neutrals and whites will tie the style together, and throwing in some texture will add dimension. Try mixing deep shades of navy with lighter hues of teal and baby blue to mimic the changing palette of coastal waters. Similarly, layer up natural fibres and finishes such as jute, cane and glass to reflect the varying texture of the coastal American landscape. The Hoxton armchair from the French Connection collection in the greenish blue hue of Ocean is the perfect blend of sea-inspired shades and natural textures with its cotton finish and exposed wooden frame.

Mediterranean Madness When you think of Mediterranean, living sunny skies and rolling sand dunes spring to mind, and on grey Irish days, it’s nice to have a reminder of warmer climates in your own home. Spanish, Italian and Moroccan interiors are a timeless source of inspiration. From encaustic tiles to patterned textures to using fauna and foliage as staple styling pieces, one thing is certain; colour is central to any Mediterranean home. Bursts of colour are an easy addition to any home; if you’re looking to achieve the Med feel, then look no further than citrus shades of yellow, pink and orange. If you’re feeling adventurous, then bring these shades in through decorative tiling; as our Spanish neighbours have shown tiling doesn’t have to be confined to bathrooms. Instead, add them to walls and fireplaces. For a simple solution, choose furnishings in bold colours, such as the Yoko armchair in sumptuous Honey velvet for an injection of citrus shaded joy. Clashing colour and pattern is another facet of Mediterranean style that is easy to incorporate into your own home. Moroccan interiors put pattern to the fore of homes – their famous woven rugs are celebrated for innovative and bold patterns, which they layer with floor cushions and bright throws. Don’t shy away from bold print; embrace the playful nature of mixing more traditional styles with tropical and geometric patterns. Tick the bright colour and bold pattern boxes with the Jardim sofa in Pink Sensual Velvet with its playful throw cushions in a tropical print, and pair it with the Yoko Bench Footstool in Dalmatian Dots (right) to really capture the chic clashing ways of Mediterranean design.

How did you and Caroline come to set up GAFF? Caroline and I met when we were both working as journalists at IMAGE magazine. In 2016, we had both gone freelance; Caroline had just bought her first home and I was renting. Both of us were struggling to find affordable, stylish home pieces and decided there was a need for a website where people like us could go for inspiration and resources. GAFF is all about embracing and making the most of your living space, whether it’s a rented room or an entire house. If you go on to GAFF’s Instagram or website, you’ll find beautiful house tours in real Irish homes, expert advice, shopping guides – basically everything you need to create the home of your dreams in a realistic, affordable way. We love to support Irish businesses, and we only publish and promote things we really believe in. It’s a joy to be part of the interiors community in Ireland, which is supportive, innovative and down to earth.
Can you tell us about GAFF Shop?
We saw a gap in the market for interior lovers to buy and sell beautiful pieces. Sure, there are plenty of online platforms that offer a buy and sell experience, but you always have to trawl through rubbish to find that one gem. So, we thought, why not harness our 30k audience and ask them to sell their favourite pieces with us, online? We only accept items that meet our GAFF standards – which means less time spent trawling and more time being inspired. Anyone can upload items to sell on the GAFF Shop, for free – there’s no fee. Every Monday and Thursday, we go through the uploaded items and check them for style, photography standards and make sure they have enough info – i.e., measurements, whether the pieces are old or new. After that, we approve items that are good and reject items that aren’t up to scratch. If a piece is great but the pics aren’t good, we get in touch with the seller and help guide them towards ensuring they’ll make a sale. The shop is based on trust – we are trusting the seller to be honest and truthful, and we are trusting the buyers to stay true to their agreement to purchase. Seller and buyer arrange their payment and meeting themselves – we merely facilitate. We know our GAFF audience are true home mavens, and so far everyone has been fantastic, both buyers and sellers. If anyone
has any issues, we are always on hand to help. For anyone interested in buying, they simply hit the BUY ME button on the site and privately and securely message the seller and negotiate a deal.
What styles are popular right now?
There is always an interest in mid-century style furniture and rattan. If a rattan chair pops up on the shop, it’s always snapped up! That look is really having a moment right now, and we can see how in-demand it is by how quickly it gets sold on site.
Are visitors to the site interested in conscious shopping, sustainability and reusing furnishing items?
Absolutely. GAFF Shop was created with a circular economy in mind. We love to promote home improvement but we have never been comfortable with telling people to buy new all the time. GAFF Shop allows people to mix and match their home accessories without wasting or throwing pieces in a landfill. We know our audience loves a good bargain – this way, they can help the planet and still enjoy that creative interior experience.
Who are your typical visitors/customers on the site?
We have everyone from small independent makers like Hanging Forest, who use the site to sell beautiful handwoven pieces, to homebodies who are moving house or changing up their style, to people who order something that doesn’t quite work in their house.
What are some treasures you have listed?
There is an amazing mid-century sideboard on the site right now that is such a cool, timeless, retro piece. We also have some beautiful designer sofas at half the price and in amazing condition! gaffinteriors.ie

How do you find the houses?
There is no great secret to how I find cheap houses. They are out there on every property site, featured in lots of newspapers and hidden away behind the counters of most estate agent offices. They are rarely the properties in the windows, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
With her Instagram site and TV show, Cheap Irish Houses, Maggie Molloy shows how a house in need of some work might be the answer to the problem of house prices beyond the range of most buyers. Here, she talks about her bargain-hunting ways
bargain
hunt
What is the difference between a bargain and a money pit?
Honestly, the main difference is the buyer’s perception of what needs to be done to the house. You can have two buyers looking at the same €80,000 house and the one who brings a structural engineer and realistically looks at what level they would like to upgrade the house to, will have very few surprises and will think they have found a bargain, whereas someone who visits a house on their own and gets swept up in the romance of it all without speaking to a professional will blame the house for being a ‘money pit’ in five years’ time. The trick is to take off the rose-coloured glasses before you go back for your second viewing and be prepared to ask experts for advice at every stage of the process.
How did you come to set up Cheap Irish Houses?
It originated as a small Instagram account called IrelandLost. I’ve always loved old houses and I noticed on my drives between Wexford and Tipperary that some houses would sit idle for years. Then you would drive past one day and they would be gone, with either an empty field or a new build in their place. I started documenting these derelict houses as a hobby, as a small way of immortalising them before they disappeared for good. Then one winter when I wasn’t able to get out to photograph houses, I looked at some estate agents’ websites to see if they had any I could share on my feed. Once my followers saw that the houses were for sale, the enthusiasm built steadily and before long, I had reached 10,000 followers.

Are there danger signs you look out for (e.g. damp, subsidence) that mean a definite no?
There is a phrase in the building trade that every house can be saved if you have the right budget. So I suppose in that respect there probably are no definite nos. Some of the things that turn people off houses are not nearly as daunting as they think though. Damp is a very common occurrence in old houses that have been closed up for a while, but things like repairing gutters, installing land drains and making sure all roofs and chimneys are watertight can go a long way to rectifying it. I would definitely recommend getting all these things sorted before simply spending a fortune on dry lining. If the water is getting into your walls and you don’t fix the source of the problem, the dry lining will simply hide it, not eradicate it. I have lived in my old farmhouse for 16 years and after some remedial work, the first year, it has never been damp since. And it’s not dry lined, nor do I have any damp proofing laid down.
have this god-given right to live in a show home, and young people are burdening themselves with huge mortgages to live in houses that are deemed acceptable to others. Instead, they could be moving into an old and affordable cottage, living in the rooms they can, and expanding the ‘finished’ rooms as they can afford to.
How would you go about decorating a home on the cheap?
For me, it’s all about embracing what you’ve got. It costs a lot to make a vernacular cottage feel like a modern apartment, so why bother, especially when it’s ten times more adorable in its original form! For me, that meant leaving my inside walls uneven and simply whitewashing them, keeping my original stone floors, doors and ceilings where I could, buying old furniture that fitted into the quaint simple style of my farmhouse and filling my walls with vintage things I found in charity shops and car boot sales. Saving money on these things, meant I could prioritise a few splurges like new wooden windows, a half door, a handmade Belfast sink unit for my kitchen and a huge, old Irish dresser to make my home feel a bit more luxurious.
How can people minimise the costs associated with buying a house and the renovation costs that come after?
First off, I always advise people to try to find a house with some of its basic services installed. Not everyone can afford this, and it definitely doesn’t come with every old house, but if you don’t have to get a well drilled, apply for planning for a septic tank, get the house wired, get the house plumbed, this will take a huge burden off your shoulders. Even if the house doesn’t have modern wiring, but it has had electricity in the past, it means you won’t have the delay of waiting for electricity poles to be installed. Or let’s say you find a house with a basic bathroom, old kitchen and open fireplaces, this means a lot of the hard work has already been done on your renovation project. As for minimising renovation costs, moving forward my advice would be, don’t underestimate your own ability to rough it! This concept of only living in a house that’s ‘up to spec’ is crazy. Thousands of people around Ireland live in houses that aren’t perfect and upgrade them as they can afford to. Sure, it’s important to budget for your beautiful finished house, and daydream about it, and always keep it in your mind’s eye. But every person doesn’t Home & Interiors
