Topshop has announced Taylor Hill as the face of their autumn-winter 2016 global campaign, which launched in August. In her debut campaign for Topshop, Taylor models the new collection in a series of images shot in New York by acclaimed photographer Giampaolo Sgura and styled by Topshop’s Kate Phelan. The campaign features in-store advertising, online and on social media platforms globally. Kate Phelan commented: “Taylor walked in the February 2016 UNIQUE show – she is a social supermodel and a young woman with style and personality; she is every Topshop girl rolled into one. Whether she is a tomboy in jeans, glamorous in cocktail, or pretty in polka dots, Taylor is Topshop’s ultimate girl crush.”

So... Stella & Dot Stella & Dot continues to grow in popularity with Irish fashionistas. Their autumn collection is beautiful as always, inspired by Paris in the 1970s and includes BESPOKE by Stella & Dot launched in July.

FEATURE

In

VOGUE! Fashion buying is no ordinary desk job. From runways to designer rooms and the decadence of high-rise cocktail parties, an ability to take risks and predict trends of the future are the cornerstones of this make-or-break job. Brown Thomas Fashion Director Shelly Corkery shares some insight into the job – and her key pieces and trends for autumn 2016

W

What are your must-have pieces for the coming season? Key must-have pieces for me this season include a pair of denim jeans from Vetements, a new brand to Brown Thomas for autumn/winter; a green and navy check coat from Victoria Beckham – the shape of the coat is oversized, with volume on the shoulder, which can be belted to cinchin at the waist; and the new Gucci Marmont chain shoulder-bag, which I absolutely adore. Gucci is so relevant from a fashion point of view this season. Which collections really stood out for you? Gucci’s transformation as a fashion brand is the most exciting change this season. With Alessandro Michele at the helm, Gucci is a complete contradiction, from where it was to where it is going. Prada really made an impact this autumn/winter with lots of embellishment in the collection; white cotton corsets worn over military coats added a contradiction of feminine to masculine in a beautiful show. Balenciaga Creative Director Demna Gvasalia’s collection has a vintage, retro feel which is very edgy and progressive. Loewe was my favourite show overall, with one of the nicest collections by Creative Director JW Anderson. What are you looking for when you’re on a buying trip? When we go out to the markets we are looking for new looks – searching for collections that are fresh, modern and future-thinking. Fashion moves so quickly and we are buying eight months in advance, so we need to ensure what we buy now is relevant a season ahead. During a buying appointment, we are always thinking of the customer; how this trend relates to them, how they will wear each piece, and how we can introduce something new to excite each season. Customers are so savvy, due to social media and designers’ exposure to the digital world, so we have to be ten steps ahead at all times. My instinct has a huge part to play when buying fashion. How do you know when something is going to resonate with your customer? At Brown Thomas, we stay close to the customer and listen to what they want. In the fashion industry it is essential to know the changes and have the confidence to sell them. Our Personal Shopping team regularly feedback customer comments; we understand what it is they are looking for and what brands and trends will be of interest to them. A business of our size allows the buying team to spend time on the shop floor talking to our team and customers, which is invaluable.

Customers are so savvy, due to social media and designer’s exposure to the digital world, so we have to be ten steps ahead at all times

How much has Brown Thomas and their collection of designers changed since you started? In the 15 years I’ve been with Brown Thomas, the fashion landscape has changed dramatically. We continue to develop the designer offering with strong luxury brands. Our established international designer brands include Stella McCartney, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Alaïa and Prada to name just a few, while we continue to introduce new looks each season with brands such as Loewe, Vetements and Maticevski, all new for autumn/ winter 2016. Fashion is so fast-paced and is constantly evolving, so we don’t stay stagnant. Our buyers are

J Brand is my go-to label for denim. And I always take my Saint Laurent biker jacket with me – I only need one jacket for travelling and this piece works for every look. What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe at the moment? There are two: the Vetements oversized shearling jacket and a Gucci floral print chiffon dress with frill detail.

victoria beckham

How important is it to take risks in your job? As a fashion director, it is very important to have confidence in your decision-making and know when to take risks. We have to trust our instincts and our industry knowledge to know what brands to explore and which trend will work for the season ahead.

constantly on the markets looking at potential opportunities and we are quick to recognise successful and buoyant brands. Every season we inject something new into the mix; our customers look forward to seeing what we will introduce next. It is wonderful to have so many new brands to give such variety. Do you have a work-wardrobe of sorts? What labels do you gravitate towards? As Fashion Director of Brown Thomas, I am regularly travelling on buying trips, to Fashion Weeks and to events, so I have a versatile wardrobe. I adopt a clean silhouette for travel as it is easier to co-ordinate. I am a fashion girl at heart so each season I covet key trend pieces. I’m loving the changes at Vetements and Balenciaga for autumn/winter. In terms of the labels I gravitate towards most, I adore the minimalism of designer Phoebe Philo and always buy a few Céline pieces each season. Alaïa dresses have a beautiful silhouette and are fantastic to pack for travelling as they don’t crease. Dior dresses add glamour for evening wear. I love all of the Gucci shoes this season, particularly the wrap-over mules. The Loewe hammock bag has an innovative design which allows it to be worn as a shoulder bag, hand-held or as a crossbody.

gucci

You travel a lot and attend fashion weeks around the world. What destination gets you excited? I love New York as a city; Victoria Beckham at New York Fashion Week is the first show for me. However, Paris is my ultimate favourite city. At Paris Fashion Week I see Gucci, Stella McCartney and of course Chanel. The atmosphere is electric; it is the longest running of all Fashion Weeks, with the most shows on schedule, and is always highly anticipated. At Paris we finalise our decisions on the definitive trends for the season. fashion 11

FACE CONTOUR: Use EYE & BROW MAESTRO in Sand Blond (shade 12) to contour your temples. Apply brown SMOOTH SILK EYE PENCIL (shade 12) under the cheekbones. Blend down smoothly with a hint of HIGH PRECISION RETOUCH and CREMA NUDA. If needed, to give depth to the bottom lip, use EYE & BROW MAESTRO in Sand Blond again under the lower lip.

=

EYEBROWS: The start of the brows is emphasised, with soft smudging to create a shadow effect with the taupe matte eye-shadow of the NIGHT LIGHT palette. Then apply HIGH PRECISION BROW PENCIL in Copal (shade 3), filling in gently with small strokes to the outer third of the brows for a straight, thicker, square but still natural-looking result.

EYES: Apply black SMOOTH SILK EYE PENCIL (shade 4) on the outer corner of each eye: the “classic couture” way. Define and smudge close to the upper lash line and fill in the shape with the black matte eye-shadow of the upcoming Armani NIGHT LIGHT Collection palette (on counters in November). Smudge the bottom lash line to achieve a soft smokey effect. Use the white matte eye-shadow from the same NIGHT LIGHT palette in the center of the lid and blend. Finish with the new extra-volume mascara ECCENTRICO in Obsidian Black on top lashes.

=

SKIN: Prepare the skin with ARMANI PRIMA Glow-On moisturising balm. Apply CREMA NUDA in a shade matching your natural skin colour and add HIGH PRECISION RETOUCH when needed. Finish with light beige LUMINOUS SILK COMPACT powder (shade 2).

BACKSTage pass

Without the virtuosity of the petites mains working in the secrecy of the ateliers, haute couture wouldn’t be able to achieve its unique and incomparable brilliance. At Chanel, their expertise is deployed in two tailleur (tailoring) ateliers and two flou ateliers (dressmaking). Karl Lagerfeld wanted to pay tribute to Chanel’s craftspeople by dedicating his autumn/winter 2016/’17 Chanel Haute Couture collection to them. So, beneath the glass roof of the Grand Palais in Paris, the ateliers on the rue Cambon were recreated down to the smallest detail, with cutting tables, sewing machines, mirrors, pins, fabrics, multi-coloured threads, toiles and mannequins used to spotlight the hidden world of seamstresses and animated before the audience by the premières of the ateliers, followed by their seconds and 78 of Chanel’s seamstresses. “I thought that was a modern idea to make them participate. They should be shown too”, said Lagerfeld.
