Brown Thomas’ spring/summer 2017 international collections

Designer magic
Spring/summer is a season reminiscent of the past; with nostalgic references to the eclectic ’80s and the soft romance of the Victorian era, designers gave vintage classics a futuristic update. ‘Hyper Florals’ were a dominant trend on the international runways, along with ‘Colour Pop’ – from intense brights at Céline and Balenciaga to sand-washed hues at Valentino, colour was abundant. Brown Thomas has introduced new designers for S/S’17, including Caroline Constas, Chinti & Parker, Coach, Jacquemus, Lisa Marie Fernandez, Magda Butrym, Monse, Sies Marjan, Tibi, Zimmermann and 3x1 Denim. Continuing last season’s themes, shoulders remain exposed with asymmetric cuts and open necklines creating to a summer sensuality. Silhouettes with a sense of humour add a playful appeal. The 1980s are presented in their purest form, with power shoulders on the runways at Vetements and Balenciaga, but with mostly soft and feminine designs. Prada, Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler all embraced ‘Modern Athleisure’ fusing leisurewear with contemporary details like parachute silhouettes and drawstrings. The use of bold colour-blocking emphasised the modernist theme. Female empowerment is a key fashion focus for 2017 and girl power is showcased among strong feminine silhouettes and slogans in many collections, including Dior, Sacai and Stella McCartney.
Doing it with denim
Feast your eyes on some gorgeous new imagery for River Island’s springsummer denim campaign, which features a number of new styles as well as shorts and jackets.

Fit lookin’
Spring is all about a new athleticism at H&M Sport – for women, the spring’s sportswear collection is fun and playful with key items including the printed outerwear jacket and colour block leggings. Pastel accents and vibrant blue shades bring the collection to life, with contrasting trims and sheer panels adding an urban edge. Crop tops are another essential this spring, and come in an array of colours with feminine details, perfect to mix and match with leggings and shorts in a variety of colourful prints or block shades.
Tommy girl
The Tommy Hilfiger spring/summer 2017 womenswear collection, Summer of Love, celebrates 1960s love and liberation with a modern-day twist. The signature look is about joy and free-spirited optimism – it’s a new take on flower power. Washed denim patchworks, sun-washed palettes and utilitarian details are inspired by the carefree beaches of southern California, while London’s Savile Row channels a look that is neat and polished – with Liberty prints, contrast piping, heritage fabrics and playful paisleys. It’s a relaxed, sporty take on the all-American girl! fashion 05

hat are your must-have pieces for the coming season? A trench coat, a printed dress, a cut-out shoulder detail on a top or dress.
Which new season collections really stand out for you? Marella’s bright colour themes will really work for summer. Tara Jarmon covers desk to dinner as well as some great occasion pieces and then Lauren by Ralph Lauren’s relaxed dressing takes care of any weekend event. What do you look for when you’re on a buying trip? I’m really looking for cohesion in a collection in terms of colour and trend. And then there’s the suitability factor: for the Irish customer, it has to be something that people are going to want to wear. How do you know when something is going to resonate with your customers? It can be as simple as colour and fit or capturing the mood of the catwalks. It really varies from year to year and for each season. SUNCOO
How has the Arnotts selection of designers changed over the years? Our collections are constantly evolving to reflect market trends and consumer demand. What labels do you prefer for you workday? For workwear, I tend to go for the likes of Hugo by Hugo Boss and Marella; they would be my go-to brands.
How important is it to take risks in your job and do you worry people won’t like what you choose? It’s always important to push the boundaries with fashion, but also to maintain a balance with commerciality.
HOBBS
What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe right now? My Hugo coat and my Marella black shirt are great for business travel and Ganni, a new label for us which is fantastic for print tops and dresses.
You travel a lot as a fashion director to attend fashion events, but what destinations excite you? Anywhere I am viewing new collections, whether it’s Paris, London or Milan. It’s all part of the job and just getting to see the new collections is always a thrill. Do you have fashion icons? Style icons like Audrey Hepburn or Jackie O are timeless, while fashion setters and IT girls Gigi & Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Jordan Dune are very influential at the moment.

New season look
Orange-you-glad?
A positive colour, bursting with energy, evoking upbeat thoughts and emotions. This season, orange turns into tangerine, curry and ochre hues that take on muted and iridescent nuances from different materials. Here, Linda Cantello interprets Giorgio Armani Privé spring-summer 2017: “It’s a new take on orange, blending and layering the new Lip Maestro Notorious collection to create a nuanced eye and cheek to achieve a fresh vibrant summer face.”
EYES The look, step by step
SKIN
Prepare and massage skin with Armani Prima Glow-On Moisturizng Balm, ensuring the cream is absorbed before adding the base.
FACE CONTOUR
Use High Precision Retouch and new Power Fabric foundation to correct natural skin tone, matching it to the colour of the neck. Then apply some Lip Maestro Notorious (shade No.301) widely on cheeks and eyelids, making sure the angle from the browbone down to the cheek is clearly defined. If needed, redefine the shape with High Precision Retouch.
Fill in eyebrows to create a straight line, using Eye & Brow Maestro in the shade of the eyebrow. Intensify the eye by adding a slight shadow from the inner corner to the brow with Eye & Brow Maestro in No.2 ‘Wenge wood’. Add new thin Eyes To Kill Proliner in black as close as possible to the top lashes. Use your finger to extend to the outer corner. Apply Eccentrico mascara in ‘Obsidian Black’ on the top lashes only.
LIPS
Mix Lip Maestro Notorious shade No. 301 with shade No. 515 and gently dab onto the lips. Powder at the end using Luminous Silk Compact. The finish should be matte.

PARIS in the springtime beauty
For the launch of Chanel’s spring-summer 2017 haute couture collection at the Grand Palais in Paris, Karl Lagerfeld wanted to recreate something of the ambience of the company’s home at 31 rue Cambon in the first arrondisement. With décor inspired by the 1930s and Art Deco, the setting recalls the mirrors on the grand staircase at rue Cambon, leading up to the Chanel haute couture salons. The show’s make-up was pure class too.
