Patron: Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland
A welcome note It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 2017/2018 concert season during which we celebrate the orchestra’s 70th anniversary. From the start, the Irish Free State broadcaster 2RN (later Raidió Éireann) always supported a music ensemble. The first manifestation of this commitment was the ‘Clery’s Instrumental Trio’ which by 1948 had grown into a new orchestra. 02
Under the baton of Jean Martinon, and led by Florentine violinist Renzo Marchionni, the first concert by the Raidió Éireann Symphony Orchestra took place at the Phoenix Hall on February 14th 1948. Since then the orchestra has continued to grow in reputation to create a unique place for classical music within contemporary Irish culture. At the core of each performance is you, the orchestra’s loyal audience. We value your support and always welcome feedback on our programmes and performances. We hope you enjoy and continue to support your national orchestra.
«
This season we are honoured to welcome the hugely talented Nathalie Stutzmann as our Principal Guest Conductor. Nathalie conducts five concerts, culminating with a performance of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 At the core of each ‘Choral’ for our season finale. She also conducts the Philharmonic Choir in Mozart’s Requiem in the performance is you, RTÉ autumn.

We are proud to present many exciting and multitalented artists to perform extraordinary music this season. Our opening Prelude concert puts a focus on Irish music when internationally acclaimed composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin makes his début with the orchestra. Later in the season, we also present a new Concerto for Organ by Gerald Barry, RTÉ’s Composer-in-Residence, and a first performance of the complete Piano Concerto by Deirdre Gribbin, The Binding of the Years. On the centenary of his birth, we pay homage to great American composer Leonard Bernstein, with a performance of his Chichester Psalms, conducted by Joana Carneiro. In January, conductor Alexander Shelley presents this extraordinary composer’s Overture to West Side Story and Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. Other season highlights include conductors Harry Bicket and Jaime Martín, violinist Nikolaj Znaider directing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and conducting Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, Carlos Kalmar conducting the unstoppable Storm Large in Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins. Guest soloist Alexander Toradze performs Shostakovich’s second piano concerto, Boris Giltburg plays Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto, and Alexander Bernstein and Fiachra Garvey join forces for Poulenc’s Double piano concerto. I hope we bring you many memorable moments of music throughout the season. Best wishes, Anthony Long General Manager, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 03
