01
A welcome note You are most welcome to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s 2018/19 Season. It has been an eventful seventieth anniversary year for the RTÉ NSO and for you, our audience. We are grateful for your support throughout the year and hope we can rely on your continued support into the future. While final figures are not available at the time of writing, I am pleased to report that our audiences have increased by over ten percent during last season. As Ireland’s only full-time symphony orchestra, we are cognisant of the diversity of audience that we serve in our role as a cultural body. Given Ireland’s unique culture and geography, we need to ensure that our mission is to enrich, entertain, inspire and challenge the lives of these diverse audiences by providing you with live, broadcast and recorded orchestral music throughout the island of Ireland and internationally. We aim to be a class leader in the delivery of quality orchestral music, and to put you the audience at the heart of everything we do. 02
This season we hope to continue to serve you with an eclectic mix of concerts throughout our main season, interludes, special events and educational output. The following is an overview. We have bookended our main season with two masterpieces. We open on Friday September 14th with Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’ Symphony and close on Friday 31st May with Strauss’ ‘Alpine’ Symphony.
“
Jaime Martín conducts two season concerts both featuring guest pianists - Louis Schwizgebel and our own Barry Douglas. David Brophy conducts Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ to celebrate the centenary of the armistice that signalled the end of the Great War. He also joins us in our mini sub season ‘Towards 2022’ where the focus is on Irish classical music and music with links to our rich and underexplored classical music heritage. This, we hope is a first step in bringing our art music to the wider audience.
our mission is to enrich, entertain, inspire and challenge…”
Our choral offerings include ‘Great Opera Choruses’, the Verdi ‘Requiem’ and our traditional Good Friday Bach Passion which in 2019 will be the St. Matthew Passion. Our seasonal offerings include a screening of Ghostbusters and ‘Swingin’ Christmas’ with Andrew Cottee and we are joined on New Year’s Day by the great Teodor Ilincai. Major international stars featuring this season include Alexander Vedernikov, Leonard Slatkin, Maxim Vengerov, Vilde Frang, Simone Lamsma, Bryn Terfel, Piotr Beczala. Our home grown talent includes Orla Boylan, Patricia Bardon, Hugh Tinney, Anna Devin, Fergal Caulfield and on St. Patrick’s Day, the premiere of Niall Vallely’s Concerto for Concertina and Orchestra and Irish traditional super-group Moxie. We look forward to performances of John Buckley’s Organ Concerto and works by Cindy McTee, Saariaho and Li Huanzhi and Xiaogang Ye. One final work I will mention, before you peruse the complete offerings of your RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, is Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt with Celine Byrne, which will be a full concert performance of this true gem. Again, I would like to thank you for your continued support and feedback throughout the last year. Best wishes, Anthony Long General Manager, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 03

FRIDAY 3 MAY
INTERLUDE
LIVE SCREENING IN CONCERT W E A R E NOT A LO N E . In collaboration with Film Concerts Live!, the RTÉ NSO proudly present Steven Spielberg’s 1977 masterpiece, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Widely considered one of the most treasured and influential science fiction films of all time, Close Encounters of the Third Kind features a groundbreaking and magnificent score written by John Williams, which will be performed live and in sync with this extraordinary film. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), an ordinary blue-collar electrical lineman from Indiana experiences a close encounter with an unidentified flying object. Increasingly obsessed with this unexplained phenomenon, Roy is drawn to a series of seemingly random strangers, each of whom has come in contact with similar UFOs, eventually making his way to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, where he finds the answers he seeks and where his life is forever changed.
